Family and Consumer Science Grilled Cheese

By Bella Schwabe In seventh grade, Family and Consumer Science the students are still doing the cooking unit. In the class they made grilled cheese. Everyone was still in the same groups as the pre-vious cooking assignments. It started with everyone planning

out jobs and re-sponsibilities, then we got into the kitch-en. We started out by washing our hands and getting our in-gredients ready. Once we had our bread and cheese we start-ed to look at the recipe and follow the di-rections. First, we plugged in

the griddle and started to make the sandwich. We started by buttering both slices of bread and putting on the cheese. Then, we put it on the griddle and let it cook till it was crispy on both sides. Next we got to sit down with our friends and enjoy our delicious creations. Lastly, we had to clean up. We had to unplug the griddle, clean the sink, do the dishes, bring the dirty rags to the washing machine. Also, we had to clean the counter and we had to sweep the floor.

Do you ever think about why astronauts wear those special suits when they are in space? Aren’t they heavy and uncomfortable? Well yes, but without them, astronauts would die. Why? Well, on Earth we have a protective atmosphere that shields us from the sun’s harmful UV rays, and it also protects us by regulating temperatures and also helps maintains a nice pressure. Space, on the other hand is much more hostile. Without our husky atmospheric blanket, you would be unprotected from many things. But the most serious danger and lack of in space is the oxygen and ebullism. Ebullism is the formation of droplets or bubbles in bodily fluids due to a reduction in ambient pressure. The pressure in the vacuum of space is so low-set that the boiling point of the fluids in your body decreases below the body’s regular temperature (37 degrees C), which will result in the establishment of gas bubbles in your fluids that can really mess up your body. You will swell up, perhaps even to twice your normal size, but you will not explode, as your skin is extremely stretchy. Also, your blood will not boil. You will, of course, be in an immeasurable amount of pain, and your blood circulation will be impeded. So, that is what would happen to your body in space without a spacesuit.

EHP is very fun and interesting, and all grades can join. Get your application in soon so you can start your classes. Sign up papers are due October 29th. Fifth grade can join simple machines, web casting, and newspaper. In sixth and seventh grade you can join all of the classes, and mind puzzles as well. Eighth grad-er are allowed to join all EHP classes, but you must be an existing EHP student to join mind puzzles. All the classes are amazing, and here is some information about each one. In newspaper you find topics from-school activities and write about them. You can also take pictures of the activity and put one in the paper. Everyone’s work comes together and makes an awe-some informational newspaper about SMS. In simple

machines you follow a set of direction to build a LEGO creation. If you join web casting in fifth grade, you can make graphic slides for the morning announcements and learn about what you will do as a part of web casting. In sixth, seventh, and eighth grade you will take on new responsibilities, like finding music for the announcements and being part of the wire cast and actually announcing in the morning on camera! The last class is mind puzzles. In this class you play games that challenge you to complete the task of the game. There are many games you play by yourself, and some that you play as a group. EHP has many choices of what you can do, and in each class you learn skills you didn’t have before.

Halloween Dress Up DayBy: Lorien Tyne

Halloween is just around the corner! This year Halloween is on a Saturday, but the Friday be-fore you can dress up. On Friday at school it’s really fun to dress up but there are some limits to what you can do. First of all no weapons or masks, and you must be dressed appropriately for school. Your character must be school-appropriate as well. You are allowed to wear hats but it must go with your costume. So you can’t just come to school with a hat to take advantage of the fun one day change in the dress code. Just be-cause there are rules doesn’t mean you can’t dress up though. Be creative with your costume and have fun!

Family and Consumer Science - Cooking UnitBy Bella Schwabe

In seventh grade Family and Consumer Science they are working on a cooking unit. In the unit the kids are learning table manners, cooking and cleaning. We started the unit off by going over table manners and mis-takes that are often made at the table. We then started to learn the different tools that are used in the kitchen and how they are used. We also learned how to keep our kitchen clean and safety in the kitchen. Mrs. Couture then showed us different cooking techniques and recipes. After a few cooking demonstrations we were ready to go into the kitchens to cook for ourselves. We were broken into groups of three or four, we were told whether or not we were to be on day A or B, and we got into the kitchen. The first thing we cooked was homemade apple-

sauce. We first started by washing our hands and apples. We then started to cut and core the apples. After that we cooked our apples with a little water until they were soft. After that, we put them through the food mill and started to turn them into applesauce. Lastly, we added sugar and cinnamon to taste. The applesauce was so good, and it was a lot of fun to make.It was very surprisingly easy! I think I can speak for all the seventh graders when I say that we are very excited for the rest of the cooking unit and the rest of the time in Family and Consumer Science. In this class math and sci-ence sneak into the lesson without us knowing it. Cooking involves a lot of math. So this is making math fun for us with the measuring. WE DID THE MATH!!! We will save Matt Damon.

Digital CitizenshipBy Grace Christensen

The eighth graders are currently taking a class called Digital Citizenship in the computer labs. Digital Citizenship is an on-line course that teach-es and goes over all aspects of proper etiquette on-line and how to be a great digital citizen. When taking Digital Citizenship, students watch vid-eos about using social media and different programs on line. Students then answer different questions concerning the topics of the videos that they watched. Taking Digital Citizenship is really helpful to students, because most everyone uses the internet; so everyone should learn how to use it respectfully.

TURKEY TROTElla McCullough

It’s that time of the year again! The Turkey Trot is happen-ing! The turkey trot is a school wide event that all students participate in. The students will run a course that is probably about one mile long. Grades five and six run together, and grades seven and eight run together at separate times of the day. Students are not expected to run, but they have to complete the course either by running, jogging, or walking it. Each grade will have a top girl and a top boy and the then also the top five girls and boys will win some-thing. The girl and boy who come in first for each grade will win a turkey, and then the top five boys and girls for each grade get will win a turkey trot t-shirt. The turkey trot food do-nations go towards our local food bank, and throughout the week stu-dents can bring in canned food and put it in a box for their class.

Drama at South Meadow Schoolby Ella McCullough

It’s getting to be that time of the year again, drama is starting up again. If you’re interested in acting, then you should think about auditioning for drama. At the end of October there will be packets on the drama club board that will contain audition information including dates you can audition on. The play that drama club will be doing this year is James And The Giant Peach. Drama is a ton of fun, and something that all grades can do. If you’re thinking about auditioning go for it! If you’re feeling nervous or just want some advice about your audi-tion there is a list of audition tips posted on the drama club board, which is located right across from the library. If you have any further questions or need to talk to Mrs. Koban, you can find her in Ms. Wall’s room, which is room sixty in the sixth-and seventh-grade wing. Drama is something that is a ton of fun and an experience that you will enjoy. Remember, no part is a small part. Every part and everyone matters. The play couldn’t go on if everyone wasn’t working together and bringing the whole thing together like that. Give it your best shot! Also if you’re not someone who likes to act but still want to be part of drama, then you can talk to Mrs. Koban about doing lights, props, and things backstage. Be sure to check the drama board to see if there are any new updates about the play and auditions. Most of all, make sure you’re having fun while doing it!

Keyboards in MusicBy Sarah Knowles

In sixth grade right now in Music the students are working on keyboards. On the first day, the students were allowed to just have fun exploring the different things on the keyboard. The next day they were given a rhythm sheet with seven different rhythms on it. They were to practices all of them. Then they were tested on one that Mrs. Fortin selected. The next day after everyone was tested on a rhythm. The kids were given a duet song to do with a partner of their choice. Then the partner groups were tested in front of the class. This looks like a fun and challenging unit.

SIXTH GRADE BRIDGE PROJECTBy Mera McClusky

In IAT, the sixth graders are doing a bridge project. This project will take the last two weeks of the quar-ter. Mr. Hammet assigned partners randomly. Ev-eryone wrote their name on a slip of paper and put it in a bucket. Mr. Hammet then picked two names, and they became partners. Each group gets a hun-dred popsicle sticks, string, and two bendable piec-es of wood to construct their bridges. They can choose to do two different types of bridges.. Once they’ve finished, everyone gets to paint their bridges

and add any designs they would like. This is a really fun project!

Newspaperby Jade Tarango

Newspaper is an EHP activity for all grades. You learn how to use Photoshop, design graphics, type arti-cles, and much more! Mrs. Brezovec teaches and super-vises you. Newspaper produces a newspaper about every two week. The paper is put on the website and hung up in the cafeteria. They also make graphics for the morning announcements. You take many things from newspaper, such as skills and good work habits. You can learn how to make a picture better in newspaper, which is a skill that is helpful in life. You also learn how to use computer programs such as Adobe Photoshop and InDesign, which

can also help you. Newspaper is two blocks. Newspaper can also help in school, such as learning to write a better article. Newspaper is fun and will help you in many ways.

Sixth Grade Science Fairby Jack McLaughlin

This year the sixth grade did a science-fair like project called the consumer challenge. October 20th was the open house where all the sixth grade could go to look at their peers’ projects. What they did at the open house, was walk around with their friends, while their parents viewed the projects or the kids could show their parents their projects. Some kids did food and brought out examples of their food for example, if they did “what brand of popcorn is the greasiest” they would bring out bowls of popcorn. Some students let other kids or parents try out their experiment. One student had people hold an egg over a bowl palm down and squeeze it and try to crush it. Many failed. Only some kids could crush the egg, most of them old-er siblings.
