President’s Message: Make Your Mark Tess Mazloomian, MSN, RN, CPAN, CAPA, CCRN

As President, I am honored to have this opportunity to serve the members of PANAC. The PeriAnesthesia Nurses Association of California is a prestigious specialty organization run by volunteer PeriAnesthesia Nurses making a difference by promoting the specialty of PeriAnesthesia Nursing. For over 35 years, the members of the PANAC Board of Directors have contributed to make PANAC what it is today. I call that making our mark.

With approximately 1500 members and growing, PANAC is the largest component of ASPAN. Through the leadership of five District Directors, we now have eleven chapters where members can learn, network and feel the pride of belonging to a well respected specialty organization.

PANAC holds a one day seminar in February and a two day seminar in October each year. Procuring speakers who are experts in the field, coordinating the gargantuan task of putting together large scale state seminars, maintaining high quality educational offerings, all while keeping the registration cost low is a daunting task. The Executive Board and the members of the Education, Website, Publications, Marketing, Promotions and Membership committees have worked hard to make every event successful.

You, too, can make your mark by joining a committee, writing an article for Pulseline, and/or becoming active in your local Chapter. Chapters are born when two or more PeriAnesthesia nurses meet to share ideas or discuss practice issues. If you are interested in forming a Chapter in your locale, visit www.panac.org and/or contact your District Director for guidance, support and assistance.

Ronda’s RemarksRonda Dyer, BSPA, RN, CPAN, CAPA

I’d like to thank Ernestine Nunes for eight years of expertly editing our award-winning newsletter and for being a great friend and mentor. Continuing her PANAC leadership, Ernie has chartered the new Visalia Chapter of PANAC where she is inspiring the next generation of perianesthesia nurses.

PANAC can help you stay young at heart. Participate in your local chapter activities, attend seminars, and contribute to the mission of PANAC. Getting involved helps you grow personally and professionally. Not sure where to start? Ask your local chapter leader or District Director,

or fill out a Willingness to Serve at www.panac.org. In nature, one principle is constant among living organisms; they grow until maximum

potential is reached. When growing stops, degeneration begins. When we physically and mentally peak, our bodies and minds begin to deteriorate. Brains must be stimulated, minds stretched, and horizons expanded. Studies have shown less dementia in individuals who work puzzles, read, and socialize. As they say, “use it or lose it.”

As your new Pulseline editor, I am energized and excited by the opportunity to help PANAC members continue to receive practical and interesting information. Please send your ideas and contributions to me at [email protected].

Meet the New Pulseline Editor By Ernestine Nunes

How do you become Pulseline Editor? Ronda Dyer simply raised her hand at a Visalia Chapter meeting and asked, “What’s involved?” A few more questions and the Hanford Adventist Medical Center PACU nurse sent in her PANAC Willingness to Participate.

As Director of Adventist Health Home Care, Ronda edited a monthly department newsletter, The Grapevine. She tansitioned to PACU four years ago, then, in 2012, sat for and passed the CPAN and CAPA exams on the same day. This fall, she held a weekly Certification Study Group for two colleagues, Dora Faulk and Gina Dias, and is proud that both are now dual certified, CPAN, CAPAs.

Raised in Kansas, Ronda attended high school in Nebraska where she met her husband, Ken. They were married 29 years ago and Ronda started nursing school, “one week after we got home from our honeymoon.” In 1989, when Ken received an offer to manage a farming operation in Corcoran, the family with daughters, Dacia and Ashley, moved to California. Now, Ronda happily divides her work days with caring for her two grandchilderen, Gabby and Patrick.

During high school, Ronda worked as a CNA and “fell in love with caring for patients.” Ronda became an LVN in 1985, an RN in 1988, and completed her Bachelors of Science in Professional Arts-Health Care Administration (BSPA) in 2010; “a year after her daughter received her BA.” Laughing, Ronda adds, “she was in junior high when I started!”

Ronda says, “I loved working in critical care and home health, but PACU is the best of both worlds. I enjoy caring for high acuity patients for short intervals of time. Every day I am able to touch many lives during some of their most vulnerable times.”

Thank you Ronda for stepping up and bringing your passion for perianesthesia nursing to PANAC’s Pulseline.

PeriAnesthesia Nurses: Caring Every Step of the Way

Perianesthesia Nurse Awareness Week (PANAW), February 3-9, 2014, is an opportunity to celebrate our specialty and recognize all we do to meet our patient’s needs— from admission to discharge, every step of the way. We listen, encourage and support our patients when they are most vulnerable. They put their trust and their very lives in our hands and we are there for them. Let’s celebrate what we do. What are you planning in your unit? Talk to Administration, your Director or Manager; it’s time to start planning. For ideas, go to www.aspan.org, events, PANAW or www.panac.org, Pulseline, Spring 2013.

ASPAN Region 1 Director’s Report Winter 2013Take the Challenge!

By Debbie Bickford, BSN, RN, CPAN, ASPAN Region 1 Director

I was very fortunate to represent you all at ASPAN’s November Mid-Year Board Meeting in New York. It is truly amazing to hear Committees and work teams report on their projects and successes. From these, President Twila Shrout will prepare her Annual Membership Report for next April’s Representative Assembly in Las Vegas.

These reports reflect the phenomenal work and accomplishments of so many Committee and Strategic Work Team volunteers. Thanks to each of these member volunteers for making ASPAN the premier nursing organization it is.

In meeting with the other Regional Directors, we discussed the challenges we face in communicating with our members and agreed that the biggest challenge is that the ASPAN website is under utilized. Not only are members not using the website, many members don’t open their e-mails or respond to ASPAN news or survey requests. Realizing that everyone is busy with their lives, the ASPAN Directors encourage you to access all the information available to you on the website. The surveys help us improve ASPAN. So let me tell you some of the things that are available to you as a member on the website at www.aspan.org. By creating and remembering your password you can easily explore all the member sites. Check-out each tab to view the drop down information pages.

About Us• has contact information for members from National Office, to Component contacts and webpages.Members• features benef it s and scholarship appl icat ion information.Clinical Practice• answers FAQ’s (Frequently Asked Questions), let’s you ask a question of your own, and lists ASPAN Position Statements and Guidelines.Education • lists ASPAN Seminars, On-Demand online CE and Certification classes (to do at night in your PJ’s).Research• guides you with steps to develop a project and a tutorial on learning and using the Joanna Briggs Institute for data collection.

Resources • gives members access to Breathline and has JOPAN current and past issues for access to articles on perianesthesia topics. The ASPAN Store gives members discount access to certification and orientation materials, and more.

Let’s face it, on-line information is here and it will not go away, so let’s embrace it. Many of us are shopping on line with our computers, now we can use it to improve our practice and our knowledge—it is your information hotline!

Next month, ASPAN voting online begins. Read the ASPAN Board Candidate information by clicking on the homepage link. Make your decision after reading the Candidate statements—just a click to VOTE. This year, your component will receive credit for the number of members who vote; one of the criteria for the coveted Component Gold Leaf Award. 2014 Challenge – go to the ASPAN website and utilize it!

Three-peat Recruiting Champion!By Linda Sparks RN, BSN, MHA, CPANMembership Chair

Congratulations to Cynthia Galarpe RN, BSN from Rady Children’s Hospital, San Diego! She earned the prestigious recruiting award three consecutive years. Cynthia has enjoyed many incentives, including, free PANAC membership, seminar vouchers and accolades from her peers. She goes above and beyond her call of duty to ensure that each newly hired nurse is informed of the benefits of membership and facilitates her colleagues’ timely renewal. She not only recruits at work, but in the community and statewide. It is a pleasure to work with Cynthia, she is truly a PANAC cheerleader!

As Membership Chair, I welcome our new members. PANAC is committed to providing support and resources to every member, and to fostering growth in our specialty. Benefits of membership include:

Advance notice of upcoming seminars and educational •opportunitiesReduced registration fees for ASPAN and PANAC seminars•Discount coupon to PANAC seminars for new members and •certified CPAN and CAPA nursesScholarship opportunities•Quarterly receipt of • Pulseline newsletterOpportunities for special awards and recognition •Ability to network with PeriAnesthesia colleagues•

PANAC has maintained its membership this year with 1447 members. Let’s hit 1500 by 2015. I encourage everyone to recruit a colleague, bring a friend to a chapter meeting, complete a Willingness to Participate form and become involved in promoting PeriAnesthesia nursing. Access our website at www.panac.org to learn more about your organization.

Helping at Home By Terry Trautloff, RN, CAPA, Promotions Chair

At each meeting, PANAC asks members to donate to a local charity and matches those donations up to $250. This October, we chose the St. John’s Women’s Shelter in Sacramento. The largest shelter in Sacramento County, St. John’s has focused exclusively on helping homeless women and children since 1985. They provide safe housing for homeless mothers and their children, serving more than 900 individuals each year. Career education and vocational rehabilitation is provided. This includes on-the-job employment training offered at their restaurant and child development center. Thank you to PANAC members whose donations at the annual meeting totaled $363. PANAC will add $250 for a total donation of $613.

Government Affairs By Beverly Edwardsen, BS, RN, CPNGovernment Affairs Chair

From the 16th floor we could see the beautiful fall colors, the State Capitol, and the Sacramento sky line. It was only fitting that one of our elected representatives should speak to PANAC members at the 34th Annual Seminar luncheon.

Freshman Assemblyman Ken Cooley (D) from the 8th Assembly District shared his excitement about being involved with the implementation of the Affordable Care Act. He spoke of his personal experience with the health care system and how he hopes things will change. Mr. Cooley stated that the government should not be expected to get everything right the first time, but that the system will evolve to meet the needs of the people.

He encouraged the PANAC members to become involved by reaching out to our government representatives. “Nursing is a voice that should be heard by the legislative body.” The most basic form of involvement

is by casting informed votes. Everyone should be aware of who their state and national representatives are and what they are doing. Create a relationship by communicating with legislators by letter, fax or e-mail. Each government representative has a web site with easy links for communication. Anyone who has an opinion or concern, can simply click on the link and share.

Assemblyman Cooley’s presentation was a good reminder that in this time of change, we need to become involved with the decisions that will affect our patients and our working environment.

Following his lunch presentation, Assemblyman Ken Cooley greets PANAC member, Riyaz Zavahir.

Successful 34th Annual PANAC October Conference

By Lori Silva, RN, CCRN, CPANPANAC Education Chair

This year’s 34th Annual PANAC Conference offered a variety of topics and exceptional speakers. With 111 present Friday and 120 Saturday, this was the largest fall conference attendance for several years. Attendees enjoyed beautiful weather and an easy walk to Old Sacramento and the Downtown Plaza.

We appreciated nine vendors on Friday and seven on Saturday. Poster presentations were shared by Tess Mazloomian, Linda Minnich and Ernestine Hughes, and Gayle Kerfoot.

Comments from the evaluations included:“I’m a new member of PANAC and this is my first seminar attendance. •I registered for two days and drove from Santa Clara to Sacramento. The classes were worth driving for. Your speakers were superb and content was relevant to my practice. I got to know new acquaintances. I am excited and looking forward to the next seminars. Thank you for offering these terrific classes.”“I always enjoy and have a great experience every time I attend a •PANAC seminar. I feel very blessed to be surrounded by great nurses in the perianesthesia field I can look up to in our area to improve my skills and knowledge as a new graduate nurse. Thank you for all the hard work you guys put into this seminar. The speakers were excellent and talked about topics that certainly help make us all better and passionate nurses. I definitely learned a lot. I look forward to sharing my new knowledge and growing even more in this field. You are an inspiration to me.”“This was the best conference ever!”•“The conference was great! This was better than National.”•

Over and over attendees commented about the great speakers, the valuable information they received, and how it would impact their practice.

Wow, another fantastic year is wrapping up. PANAC once again had an amazing conference. It was great to see all who made the trek to Sacramento. I am always energized after going to conference and seeing so many professional

nurses dedicated to our specialty. District 2 rounded out its year by having a mini-seminar in

Burbank. Four incredible speakers presented From the Neck Up to a group of 22 nurses from throughout the district. I am giving a huge shout-out to Anna Jackson and Amber Trudgeon for their amazing work!

The Valley/Burbank Chapter will be hosting a seminar titled Bones, Bones, Bones on January 25, 2014 from 8:00-12:00. I look forward to seeing you there. Jump start the New Year’s Resolution to increase your knowledge by joining us!

We continue to expand our presence in District 2 by adding new chapters. “Build It and They Will Come” and “You are not Alone” played in my head over and over when I started our Burbank Chapter. I challenge each of you to play that mantra in your heads. Give the gift of knowledge to colleagues and patients in your area. Start a chapter! “You Are Not Alone”, we will help! “Build It and THEY Will Come” seeking knowledge!

May the Season bring you cheer and hope.

Compassion in the Midst of Catastrophe

By Lisa Todd RN, Adventist Medical Center, Hanford, CA

As anesthesiologist, Dr. Gerardo Princesa, prepares to leave on a mission of mercy to his native Philippines in the wake of the devastating typhoon, my heart goes out to the victims. I think of the 200,000 Filipino nurses working in the United States who are frightened for their families. I think of the thousands of people whose lives have changed forever. I hurt for those who have lost loved ones, their homes, their health or their livelihood. I think of those who have no access to fresh water, food, or much needed medical help, and, I remember.

As nurses, we are all compelled to help those who are hurting. In 2010, a catastrophic earthquake devastated the country of Haiti. Driven by compassion, I felt the need to find a way to get there and help. Fortunately, I came across a group called Youth with a Mission (YWAM).

YWAM provided housing at a secure orphanage where we slept in tents and were given two daily meals. Each morning, we were transported by truck to a clinic where we worked alongside the nurses

and doctors to care for injured or ill victims who arrived from the rubble.

Though I am not an OB/GYN nurse, in the midst of so much death and destruction, I witnessed the miracle of life as I assisted in two deliveries. At the orphanage, there were many newly-orphaned children with major injuries that required transportation to the surgical facility staffed by volunteers. The smiles and hugs received warmed our hearts and compelled us all to continue.

The entire country was working off limited generator power, and supplies were scarce, but compassion was everywhere. I worked with volunteers from many other organizations, such as the Red Cross, Mercy Ships, the Registered Nurses Response Network, and Doctors Without Borders. Through this horrific disaster, I found that even though this country was in shambles, the people remained in good spirits and were very thankful for any help we could provide. I met many amazing people, medical and non-medical. Each was doing what they could to make a difference for a devastated country.

If you are interested in being a disaster volunteer, it is recommended that you participate in a disaster course and become part of a team prior to serving in the field. On the internet, you can easily find information on the organizations listed above, as well as dozens of others. You will make a difference and will form memories that will last a lifetime.

I am honored and excited to be your new District 3 Director 2013-2016. I was excited to meet other new board members at the Annual Meeting in Sacramento and am privileged to

serve alongside such a dedicated group of volunteers working toward the PANAC mission ...to promote the specialty of perianesthesia nursing.

I seize this opportunity to grow professionally. My goals are to help members of my district to connect and learn through conferences, and to provide opportunities for us to meet and exchange ideas. I will also encourage as many nurses as possible to become members of ASPAN-PANAC!

Hot off the press! A new chapter is forming in the East Bay. Kudos to Patricia Crosby for stepping up to start the District 3 Contra Costa Chapter. Your support is vitally important. Please check www.PANAC.org under District 3, more details will be posted as they come. I join Patricia in her enthusiasm for the inauguration of the Contra Costa Chapter.

A big shout-out to Gloria Luu, Immediate Past District 3 Director, for her continued support and for mentoring me in this new role.

I encourage you and welcome comments and ideas from members. Please do not hesitate to contact me. Let’s get the party started!

New interest has come up in northern California. Heidi O’Neil is willing to start a new chapter in Eureka! It was my privilege, to meet Heidi at the Annual Conference. She is excited about plans to start meeting in 2014. Eureka and Crescent City area members are encouraged to contact her and support the new chapter. This will allow us to provide ASPAN educational offerings in your area.

Katrina Mooney has organized a Sacramento Chapter educational meeting about pain management to be presented by Mark Holtsman, PharmD on Jan 30, 2014. If you have interest in being involved, please contact Chapter Coordinator Marcy Wolfe.

Star Yager has done a tremendous job of organizing Modesto Chapter meetings. Marlene Miles, MPH will be speaking on anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs in February. Please watch for the flyers about the upcoming meetings and events.

Save the date, January 25, 2014, for the ASPAN educational offering by the Modesto Chapter. Frances Mullins will host the PeriAnesthesia Pathophysiology and Assessment: A Systems Approach, by Denise O’Brien, DNP RN ACNS-BC CPAN CAPA FAAN.

District 4 will be holding a District Seminar on March 8, 2014 in Sacramento. Please save the date.

Interest is brewing up in Northwest California—we need a few more interested volunteers to make this happen. Contact me for more information.

District 5Kathy [email protected] The counties of Kern, Tulare, Kings, Fresno, Madera, and Mariposa I applaud Denise DeFendis for her

excellent job as District 5 Director and wish her success as Interim PANAC Treasurer.

As the new District Director, I want to encourage local chapter participation. So

bring a friend, members and non-members are always welcome and get involved. Our monthly meetings are an informal opportunity to meet other perianesthesia nurses and share ideas.

To meet PANAC’s goal of a 10 percent membership increase, District 5 is challenged to recruit at least thirty new members. Let’s meet and surpass that challenge!

District 5 and AORN’s Fresno Chapter join forces for a January 25 seminar, A Breath of Fresh Air, at Valley Children’s Hospital, Madera.

. Pediatric Pearls: Codeine Contraindicated with T & A Julie Williamson, DO, FAAP, Clinical Assistant Professor of

Anesthesia and Pediatrics, Stanford shared the following information at PANAC’s October Conference on this February, 2, 2013 US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) update:

A new Boxed Warning, FDA’s strongest warning, will be added to the drug label of codeine-containing products about the risk of post-operative pain management in children following tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.Deaths have occurred post-operatively in children with obstructive sleep apnea who received codeine for pain relief following a tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy. Codeine is converted to morphine by the liver. These children had evidence of being ultrarapid metabolizers of codeine, which is an inherited ability that causes the liver to convert codeine into life-threatening or fatal amounts of morphine in the body. This Contraindication applies to all children undergoing tonsillectomy and/or adenoidectomy.
