Overview of NFSM-Pulse programme

o NFSM was launched in October 2007 to enhance the production of foodgrains including pulses through area expansion and productivity enhancement.

o NFSM-Pulses was started in 170 districts of 14 states.

o Accelerated Pulse Production Programme (A3P) under NFSM-Pulses was started during 2010 in 16 states to demonstrate production and protection technologies in compact blocks of five pulse crops namely Arhar, moongbean, Urdbean, gram and lentil.

o A3P was subsumed under NFSM-Pulses from 2014-15

o Another programme namely Integrated Development of Sixty Thousand Pulses Villages in the rainfed areas under was implemented during 2010-12 under RKVY.

o Since 2014-15 NFSM-Pulses was extended to 622 districts of 27 states.

o A Programme on Additional Area Coverage of Pulses was initiated since 2012-13 to expand area and enhancement of productivity of pulses during rabi/summer season in major pulse growing states.

Policy Initiatives

• Around 50% of the total allocation is made to NFSM-Pulses.

• The cultivation of pulses as inter-crop with cereals, oilseeds, commercial crops.

• • Cultivation of pulses on farm bunds of paddy fields.

• At least 30% of the cluster demonstrations under NFSM and BGREI are being conducted by adopting cropping system approach to utilize the paddy fallow area for pulses cultivation.

Policy Initiatives

• Value chain integration of pulse growers through formation of Farmer-Producer Organizations (FPO).

• SAUs/ICAR/CGIAR institutes are also involved to address various researchable issues of pulses and demonstrations of latest technologies for better yield realization at farmers’ field.

• Demonstrations of pulses through Krishi Vigyan Kendras for spread of new technologies and seed varieties.
