Thanks to your donations, great care is the standard at PRHC. Your gifts help purchase the essential medical equipment and technology that forms the backbone of patient care. But they also play another critical role. They help attract and retain our greatest asset – the incredibly talented doctors, nurses and staff who work together to make every life they touch better. One of the key challenges faced by any hospital is recruiting. It’s no se- cret that it can sometimes be difficult to attract talented healthcare provid- ers away from large urban centres. Thankfully, for many considering the move to Peterborough, city size is not the only consideration. Working conditions, pro- fessional development, and the opportunities a community can offer to them and their families are consistently top of the list when healthcare provid- ers are asked what factors most informed their deci- sion on where to practice. That’s where your support becomes vital to PRHC’s suc- cess. By supporting the state- of-the-art technology that allows PRHC to bring life-saving and best practice pro- cedures to our hospital, you’re also helping create an environment where new physician, nurse and staff recruits are enabled to practice the quality of care they aspire to. Further, your generosity is a testa- ment to the character of our friends and Issue One / 2014 the Pulse 4 neighbours, a tangible demonstration that this is the kind of community which they and their families could be proud to join. In fact, thanks to your generosity in supporting initiatives such as PCI (car- diac stenting) and Endovascular An- eurysm Repair (EVAR), and equipment such as minimally invasive surgical tools, a $1.8 million investment in new anaesthesia machines for our operat- ing rooms, and much more, PRHC has seen an increase in the number of physicians choosing our hospital. In the last two years alone, an addi- tional vascular surgeon, two general surgeons who focus on minimally invasive surgery, a neurologist, two anesthetists, an ENT (ear, nose, and throat) surgeon, three interventional cardiologists who perform cardiac stenting, and several other physi- cians in a variety of specialties have all been successfully recruited. Among the physicians who have joined the team at PRHC in the past year is Dr. Joslin Cheverie whose specialty is minimally invasive sur- gery. Minimally invasive surgery allows surgeons to perform complex operations through very small inci- sions using specialized equipment. PRHC currently performs minimally invasive colon, kidney, hernia, gyne- cologic, gallbladder and appendix procedures. With the recruitment of Dr. Cheverie, PRHC is beginning to perform minimally invasive surger- ies on the upper GI tract as well. She had this to say about her decision to come to Peterborough: “I’ve only just begun my work here at the Peterborough Regional Health Centre and already the community feels like home,” said Dr. Cheverie. “It’s great to work in such a wonder- ful building with state of the art equipment, dedicated nurses and medical teams. This, and the gener- ous support of our community, is the winning combination doctors look for when choosing where to settle into their career.” You see, when you make a donation to support a piece of equipment, that gift has the power to make lasting health care improvements in our region. Your generosity touches every single part of our hospital. Like our doctors, nurses and staff, it is the foundation on which great care is built and sustained. Thank you. When Maddison Leaver turned nine, she did something a little unusual. Rather than presents, Maddison asked the 17 friends attending her red-carpet, Hol-lywood themed birthday party to bring donations for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at PRHC instead. Why? Because when Maddison was born 8.5 weeks premature and weighing only 4lbs 3oz , the NICU was her home for

the first two months of her life. Now she wants to help make the great care she received possible for other babies born too soon. Thank you, Maddison, for setting such a great example for us all!

Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, retirement or wedding, consider celebrat-ing life’s milestones with a donation to the PRHC Foundation in lieu of tradi-tional gift-giving. We can make it easy. Just call Manon at (705) 743-2121, ext. 3013 and she’ll do the rest!

At our annual Celebration of Giving event held last October, donors were treated to a wonderful thank you present. Bringing with them examples of the life-saving and life-changing equipment funded recently by donations, doctors, nurses and staff from across the hospital shared the impact of your support and what it means to patient care.

Here’s a look at just a few of the “Everyday Es-sential” pieces of equipment that are making great patient care possible at your hospital.

On behalf of our patients, their loved ones, and everyone here at PRHC, thank you for your commitment and dedication to health-care in our community. You make great care possible. Thank you. (Watch for your invitation to our

2014 Celebration of Giving in the Fall edition of The Pulse)

Your gifts in action!

When Mary Snack decided to include the PRHC Foundation in her Will, her children supported her decision. As they grew up, she had taught them to share. Now her Will reflects the gener-osity she encouraged in her children.

“I explained to my family that I wasn’t short-changing them – that I was actu-ally leaving something to them, but in another way,” she says. “In addition to the inheritance I’d planned for them all along, I was leaving them another gift: a hospital that would care for them and their children just as wonderfully as it cared for my husband and me.”

When Mary revised her Will, she reflected on what had made a differ-ence to her throughout her life. Right away, she thought of PRHC.

“Once I decided to leave a gift in my Will to the PRHC Foundation, it was really very easy to do,” she recalls. “I knew that I could support PRHC without sacrificing what I wanted to do for my children and grandchil-dren.” (The tax provisions resulting from Mary’s bequest will help to reduce taxes owing on the estate, which will leave more for all her benefi-ciaries.)

Every bequest makes a differ-ence, no mat-ter the size. Each one helps to make sure that excellent care will always be available close to home. Like Mary, you can help sustain lasting, first-rate

health care for your children and grandchil-dren – and everyone

else’s children and grandchildren too. This is Mary’s legacy – and it can also be yours. Please call Jennifer Cureton at (705) 743-2121, ext. 4189 or email [email protected].
