Greetings from the Pulp and Paper Foundation!

I am honored to serve as your Foundation President during this record-breaking year! We’ve been quite busy as support for our program broadens. Our student enrollment is at record levels and giving from member companies and individuals continues to grow. We have a lot to be thankful for and it would not happen without the involvement of our NC State Pulp and Paper Foundation Board members, dedicated alumni and friends, and the College, Department and program faculty and staff.

Our Board members are valuable assets to our program and contributed heavily to our many achievements this year, which include:

• A record breaking fundraising year with $248,000 in corporate gifts and $76,350 in individual gifts. As a Board, 76% are personal contributors.

• Supporting student work experiences with high levels of full time placement for program graduates, hiring a record number of freshman summer interns, and increasing the number of co-ops.

• Encouraging equipment donations with a $120,000 gift from ABB for lab testing equipment.• Supporting faculty and administration for our upcoming ABET accreditation in Fall 2016.

We are now celebrating 62 years of funding and developing leaders for the future. I find this venture both exciting and rewarding, especially when our hard work is so evident among our amazing students. I want to thank the board, alumni, friends, faculty, staff and volunteers for making this all possible and for a job well done. We are counting on your help to make the new year as successful and meaningful as this year has been for all of us.

REPORT FROM THE PRESIDENTF. GRAY CARTER

I would like to extend warm greetings from within the University, foundation and program. There is no greater joy than working with students, faculty, staff, alumni, donors and friends who diligently challenge the status quo and shape our world class operation!

I am often overwhelmed at the endeavors our partners and constituents pursue outside of NC State on our behalf. Not only are we surrounded by top notch faculty who are passionate and dedicated to their research, our industry and students, we are privileged to partner with people like you.

This fall, as we enter a capital campaign for the University, I am thankful for the support of the many, many people who will ensure our program exceeds our goals for the University, including our:

• Students, who excel in real world work experiences, adding value to our curriculum and industry. These students hold leadership roles on campus and champion stewardship to their program, University and community, like no others.

• Faculty, who are recognized globally for their technical knowledge, research and expertise. Their open door policies encourage mentoring and develop budding engineers into fine young professionals who will lead our industry into the future.

• Alumni, who are dedicated, involved and passionate about our program and industry, no matter where their careers take them. Our alumni achieved record giving levels this year for our program and inspired our current students and young alumni to do the same. They also hosted faculty and staff for visits around the nation, connected with each other through class ambassadors, and instigated our Inaugural Alumni Reunion planned for September 30 – October 1, 2016. We cannot wait for this event.

• Friends, donors and industry partners, who are as vigorous as our alumni. This vital group of key individuals are always part of our family.

Our tremendous efforts as a program and foundation are a beacon of NC State’s land grant mission and “THINK & DO” attitude. Together, we solve the problems of tomorrow. We thank you for forging powerful partnerships with us to make our world a better place!

Our Paper Science and Engineering program is thriving, and I am privileged to say it is one of the best in the country. With a strong hands-on education, our students continue to advance our college’s mission of providing cutting edge solutions for the sustainable use of natural resources.

The Paper Science and Engineering program continues to boast 100 percent job placement and some of the highest starting salaries on campus; in no small part because our students, like Manon MacAllister featured on page 14, graduate with extensive experiential learning opportunities not found in the classroom. All of our students gain in-depth industry knowledge through internships, co-ops, and study abroad, and enjoy both personal and professional growth through their experiences.

We are pleased that with your help, so many of our students receive the financial support they need to pursue their passions in the paper industry. The Pulp and Paper Foundation supports one of the largest endowments per capita on campus. In addition to traditional scholarships funded through donor and Foundation support, the program’s BioResources Journal, which celebrated a decade of success this year, continues to reinvest in our students by using earnings from the journal to fund scholarships.

I am also excited to recognize Dr. Hasan Jameel, featured on page 13, as the 2016 Jordan Distinguished Professor for Natural Resource Innovation. His research with lignin and the commercialization of products to improve sustainability will enable us to continue supporting industry advancements. By working closely with graduate students, Dr. Jameel is also developing future leaders in bio-refinery technology.

It was with mixed emotions that I accepted Dr. Steve Kelley’s decision to step down as department head and return to the faculty after nearly 10 years of outstanding service. After an exhaustive search, it is my great pleasure to welcome Dr. Marko Hakovirta, highlighted on page 19, to the College as the new Forest Biomaterials Department Head. We are thrilled to have Dr. Hakovirta, an internationally recognized leader in biomaterials science and technology, joining our leadership team. He has an outstanding record of accomplishment in both academia and industry and will bring a diversity of experience and a wealth of new ideas and perspectives to the department. I would also like to extend a special thank you to Dr. Dave Tilotta for graciously assuming the role of Interim Department Head for Forest Biomaterials during this transition.

I am so proud of our Paper Science and Engineering students, alumni, faculty, staff, volunteers and supporters. Your continued support of this prestigious program keeps our college robust and relevant in a constantly changing world. We are strong today because of the life-long commitment so many of our dedicated alumni, donors and industry partners make to our program. Thank you for all you do.

The Paper Science and Engineering program continues to be robust, with a total enrollment of nearly 200 students. In fall 2015, we welcomed 42 new freshmen into the program, our third consecutive year with 40 or more first-year students.

The 2015-2016 class of new recruits, by the numbers:• 67% of students received a Foundation scholarship.• 39% of students are female.• 22% of students are from out of state.• 19% of students are ethnic minorities.

The quality of the students joining our program continues to improve, with scores and rankings rising above the average for the College of Engineering students. After one semester, 64% of the class received a 3.5 GPA or higher and two-thirds of the students secured an industry summer internship or a semester co-op position for Fall 2016.

After one semester, nine students left due to academic difficulty or to pursue other programs, and another seven after the second semester. However, ten new freshmen and seven new upperclassmen joined us, resulting in a net of 43 new students for the year.

All first-year students participated in the new Freshmen Leadership Initiative class. In addition to classic concepts of leadership, freshmen are also exposed to broad concepts about the industry and future careers. Feedback and ratings for the course were positive and we will continue the course for the incoming 2016 students.

The year has also brought great change to the PSE program, including on-boarding two new faculty members, a new Department Head (Dr. Marko Hakovirta), new departmental faculty hires in sustainability and a new pilot plant manager, alumnus Cullen Alexander.

Our two new faculty members, Dr. Lokendra Pal and Dr. Ronalds Gonzalez, made their teaching debut at the undergradu-ate level. Dr. Pal teaches the senior papermaking course, as well as a new senior course in Process Engineering. Dr. Gonzalez teaches the senior-level course in strategic business processes for the paper industry (the first part of our two-course senior design sequence). Our seniors are seeing a real benefit from these two faculty members.

A time of change is also an opportunity for improvement. The faculty are continually seeking to elevate the national and international recognition of our program and have expressed a desire to include more material on converting/packaging and tissue and coated products. Recommendations from industry and alumni will be solicited toward this goal. These proposed changes will be presented to the Program Advisory Committee this fall.

Job placements are quite strong, with most graduating seniors receiving multiple (and competitive) offers. The average starting salary is approaching $70,000 per year, and continues to be the highest average salary for all programs in the College of Engineering. More than 60% of all graduates for 2015-2016 accepted full-time jobs with pulp and paper manufacturers, 19% with industry suppliers, and 19 % with companies outside the industry.

The continued strength and success of the Paper Science and Engineering program is only possible through the sustained support, on multiple levels, of our board, alumni, donors, friends and industry partners. We simply cannot thank you enough.

ENGINEERING A GREENER FUTURE at Summer CampThe College and Department hosted our very first Paper Science and Engineering Residential Camp this summer. In partnership with The Engineering Place and the College of Engineering, the inaugural camp of 24 high school juniors and seniors spent a week focused on “Generating the Green Economy of the Future.” They also sampled life at NC State by living in a residence hall, eating in dining halls and participating in sessions and lab based hands-on activities.

“There is so much that the world doesn’t know about the paper industry, but being able to teach students and other people about how the science works, it’s amazing how opinions can change on the spot,” said camp counselor and Paper Science and Chemical Engineering senior Kim Abrams. “The PSE department is very excited to host the students for this camp and I wanted to take part to ensure that the campers have a fun and exciting time with us. My role as a summer camp counselor is developing, teaching and facilitating the labs and activities so the students learn about engineering as a career and how vital our industry is to our future and economy.”

During the week, current PSE students and faculty encouraged campers to think about the process of engineering a greener economy for the future through biofuels, super absorbent polymers, recycling and sustainability and paper based products of the future. Each day, students explored a different topic through lecture and practical application labs. They also toured the Sonoco Recycling facility in Raleigh. The culmination of the week showcased their thoughts for a brighter and greener future in the growing biomaterials industry. Each team developed a presentation for faculty, staff, family and friends, who enjoyed hearing and seeing all of the hard work that transpired at camp.

“I hope that all of our campers will leave with a completely new outlook on the Pulp and Paper Industry,” said camp counselor and Paper Science and Chemical Engineering sophmore Jayme Currie. “If they are anything like I was, the thought of working in a paper mill may have never crossed their minds. However, I hope that by taking part in our interactive labs throughout the week they will begin to see that the paper industry has much more to offer than just copy paper. Students are going to have the opportunity to learn about the many ways that the industry affects our daily lives while also getting a taste of what the future holds by learning about biofuels, sustainability and life cycle analysis.”

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at camp this year! I met new people, made new friends, but most importantly was introduced to a new way of thinking. Since camp, I have looked into what major and career I would like to pursue and the path I will take to achieve my goals. With the help of my counselors and instructors, I am now more confident about my future than I ever thought I would be.

The College and Department are pleased to announce that Dr. Hasan Jameel, Professor of Forest Biomaterials, was appointed as the next Jordan Family Distinguished Professor for Natural Resource Innovation. This Distinguished Professorship was created through the generosity of Robert B. Jordan, III; Jack P. Jordan; Genie Jordan Ussery; and Robert B. Jordan, IV. The goal of their gift is to recognize outstanding faculty members in the College of Natural Resources and empower them to build innovative research programs addressing emerging opportunities in natural resources that have the potential of impacting the economy, our quality of life, and environmental sustainability.

As a Jordan Distinguished Professor, Dr. Jameel will continue his work to link fundamental knowledge about lignin to various new applications to directly benefit commercialization and help improve the forest products industry’s profitability and overall environmental sustainability.

He will also explore different cost-effective methods for upgrading the lignin to allow for the development of a profitable bio-refinery. The outcome of his research will improve viability of the forest products industry, which is critical for maintaining a healthy forest ecosystem, preserve rural U.S. jobs and decrease our dependency on nonrenewable resources.

The funds from the Jordan Professorship will enable Dr. Jameel to train and develop both graduate and undergraduate students who will become future leaders and contribute to both the development of the bio-refinery technology and its commercialization.

Dr. Jameel also received the Alumni Graduate Distinguished Professorship Award for 2016. This award is given in recognition of graduate faculty who made a significant contribution to the graduate program. Not only does he have one of the highest number of Ph.D graduates in the College, he goes above and beyond to make sure each of his students are thoroughly trained with the necessary skills to succeed in the industry. Dr. Jameel organizes specialized summer courses for graduate students to learn more about special technical topics and has developed a mentorship program for these students to improve their “soft” skills.

Within the last 10 years, Dr. Jameel developed a research program in the conversion of biomass to bioenergy and biomaterials. This program received more than $6 million in funding for many projects, including 5 industry-based research consortium projects, which have proven essential for incorporating industry into the college’s research while exposing students to industrial research needs.

Through his research program, patented technologies were developed and considered for implementation in industry. He also created courses in bioenergy for the graduate program to emphasize the importance in creating a sustainable society.

Like many of the faculty, Dr. Jameel is always thinking about ways to expand and raise support for the program. He established joint collaborations with graduate programs in Brazil and China to host international students at NC State, putting the program on an international radar. Dr. Jameel is a donor to both undergraduate and graduate programs in our department and college. He is also active in the pursuit of encouraging others to give back as well.

AWARD-WINNING FACULTY: HASAN JAMEEL

I am truly honored to be chosen as the Jordan Family Distinguished Professor, which shows the commitment of the Jordan Family for developing innovative research programs in natural resource utilization. I hope to use the resources provided to me to further both graduate and undergraduate education and research critical to our college.

During Manon MacAllister’s summer as a process engineering intern with International Paper in Georgetown, S.C., she not only gained critical hands-on paper mill experience, she enhanced her critical thinking skills. These skills are essential to Paper Science and Chemical Engineering majors as they progress toward life after graduation.

“This internship has exposed me to a lot of firsts,” she said. “First full-time job, first apartment, and first experience in a paper mill. It forces me to test my boundaries every day and pushes me along a steep learning curve – I work in the pulp mill with a focus in the caustic plant, an area that I know very little about, so every day is a challenge! But, these challenges are helping me become a stronger critical thinker, a more effective leader, and a better engineer every day.”

Even though MacAllister still has a few years before graduation, she is up for the challenge in a constantly changing industry. Her passion for solving difficult problems is evident in her work, both in and outside the classroom.

“My attraction to the industry stems from the sheer fact that it’s an industry for innovators,” she said. “This industry is constantly having to adapt because of external pressures; for those who seek a challenging career and a job that will allow

A SUMMER IN AN INDUSTRY FOR INNOVATORS

them to push their limits, paper engineering is right for them.”

MacAllister believes she wouldn’t have found her calling in the paper industry without the continued support of faculty and staff in the Department of Forest Biomaterials. Without her internship, she wouldn’t be prepared for life after graduation in the “real adult world” full of responsibilities.

“The faculty are devoted to the success of the students and will go above and beyond to assist you,” she said. “So if you are interested in research or just have a general question, reach out! Do not be afraid to ask for help. There will always be someone there who is willing to answer or direct you to the proper person. The real world is very different than college and there is no better way to prepare for it than by experiencing it in short periods during the summer.”

In her spare time around campus, MacAllister is an Engineering Ambassador, an Engineering Career Fair Volunteer and Publicity Coordinator, a member of the Pulp and Paper Student Advisory Committee, a University Scholar and a Brother of Alpha Phi Omega service fraternity. She likes to stay busy and is a dedicated and enthusiastic member of our campus community and now industry!

There is no better way to prepare for the real world than with an internship or co-op. The challenges I face every day in a paper manufacturing facility are helping me become a stronger critical thinker, a more effective leader, and a better engineer.

The Department of Forest Biomaterials is excited to welcome our new Department Head, Dr. Marko Hakovirta, MBA, who joins us from Stora Enso, a global pulp, paper and board manufacturer where he worked as a Senior Vice President of Innovation and R&D.

“NC State and the Department of Forest Biomaterials have a great reputation of being a top research and education provider for the Forest Products industry in the US,” Dr. Hakovirta said. “It is truly an honor to join the Department and to be part of this community.”

His extensive expertise in material science, sustainability and innovation, gained from his time at Stora Enso, managing the Auburn University and Georgia Tech pulp, paper and bioresource programs, leading R&D and Sustainability efforts

at Valmet, a global machine and process supplier for the pulp and paper industry, and exploring innovative ideas at institutes such as the Los Alamos National Laboratory and CERN, is especially valuable to our growing program.

“Our Department is educating top talent to our industry and finding novel value added solutions to the current and future needs and challenges,” he said. “The industry we serve is in a key role when it comes to renewable and sustainable products and solutions. The College of Natural Resources provides expertise and solutions to the entire value chain of the Forest Products industry. What could be more exciting than joining this sustainable innovation hub at NC State?”

In his new role, Dr. Hakovirta is looking forward to working with all of our faculty, staff, students, alumni and partners to take the Department to the next level and supporting our continued success.

“The department head’s role is to bring administrative leadership, ensure that the quality of the faculty and the staff is excellent, to represent the department within the university and to the relevant stakeholders and most importantly to help create a direction and a working environment in which the Department can excel,” he said.

“Strategically, we have many opportunities to create and expand our academic programs and research to impact society in areas like innovation and sustainability. Bringing partnerships and new networks together from industry and academia will create educational, scientific and entrepreneurial opportunities that will further advance our business in the US and globally.”

Welcome to the Forest Biomaterials team!
