Throughout the whole video we see the lead singer basically telling the audience. In some parts he goes straight up to the camera so in a way it seems like he is speaking to the viewer. This music video isn’t obviously like the others but it is a fantastic example of how you may apply Indie codes and conventions and Goodwin’s Theory to a music video.

Codes and Conventions of the indie genre. When researching into the Indie genre we found that in an Indie Music Video you are likely to see a live performance of the band themselves and a narrative clearly we can see a live performance but we can also see a narrative. The lead singer who is singing into the camera seems to be telling a story. This is where the narrative aspect comes in.

GOODWIN’S THEORY

Lyrics to visuals

When the lyrics are sung “caught her eye” the lead singer looks directly into the camera and put his hand to his eye.

“She said I wanna live like common people” Woman looks directly into camera starts speaking lyrics

Notion of lookingThe notion of looking is presented where we see the lead singer in a trolley looking through the bars like a big kid. His actions and the fact he is in the trolley shows that the band are fun guys it doesn’t connote them as too serious and it shows that they are typical guys having fun. This also represents a typical Indie band. The background colours are fun and show this also.

If you notice the product in the background is labelled ‘Pulp’ which is the name of the band.
