High altitude associated pulmonary hypertension

• More than 140 million people worldwide live >2500 m above sea level. – 80 M in Asia,– 35 M Andean mountains

• Genetic predisposition

• Other environmental factors

HIV associated pulmonary hypertension

• The prevalence is 0.5%• In Africa suggested that the prevalence

may range from 0.6% to 5%, – with higher numbers in the hospitalized as

opposed to ambulant patients

• The incidence however has not been affected by the introduction of the HAART treatment

Cardiac conditions associated pulmonary hypertension

• Cardiac pathology in the developing world may differ– Congenital heart diseases treated late– Pattern of the pathology may differ– Rheumatic fever and Rh.H.D.– Endomyocardial fibrosis– Chagas diseases
