1 INTRODUCTION DNV GL Bergen, Corrosion & Material Technology Lab, has on request from United Pipeline Services AS (in further text referred to as “the Client”) performed an adhesion test based on ISO 4624:2002 /1/, on two steel plates, coated with Grane Caisson PQT 3 coating system. The system will be used for coating of high temperature oil and gas production water pipeline, where the requirements for adhesion strength are ≥ 8 MPa, according to the Client.

Based on the information received from the Client, the composition of the coating system was following:

- 1st coat

o Epoxy: High Temp M

o Liner: needle felt hose Nordiwall High Temp

- 2nd coat

o Foil

Based on the Client’s documentation, the coating was applied on 6th July 2016 and cured on the same day at 50 °C for 4 hours, followed by cold curing at room temperature.

The adhesion test took place in DNV GL Bergen Laboratory on 11th July and it was performed only on the 1st coat. The work was witnessed by Siran Döpper, Aker Solutions (Appendix B).

2 METHODOLOGY Adhesion testing was performed based on ISO 4624:2002 /1/ using a DeFelsko PosiTest AT adhesion tester. Prior to the test, the top layer of the coating system (i.e. the foil – 2nd coat) was grinded of to make sure the adhesion strength of the epoxy/liner (1st coat) was determined. Such surface was rinsed with technical alcohol and dried in the air. Dollies (d = 20 mm) were softly grinded with SiC #320 paper, rinsed with technical alcohol and glued to the coated steel plates.

Six dollies were glued on each of the samples using an epoxy based type of glue 3M D410. The curing of the glue was carried out according to the manufacturers’ recommendations. A hole-saw was employed to carefully cut through the coating down to the bare steel plate before pulling off the dollies. The results of the pull-off adhesion test are shown in the next section.

3 RESULTS Results from the adhesion testing on two coated steel plates, performed based on ISO 4624 /1/, are shown in Table 3-1. The appearance of the failure modes is presented in Appendix A.

Actual adhesion strength values of the coating where no failure is specified are above the stated values, since the dollies were not able to be removed with the test equipment due to the high adhesion strength of the coating.

4 CONCLUSION Based on the obtained results of adhesion test (ISO 4624 /1/), the 1st coat of Grane Caisson PQT 3 coating system has adhesion strength above 8 MPa, and thus, meets the requirements for coating application in high temperature oil and gas production waters, stated by the Client.
