It straddles the border of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh states on the Coromandal Coast in India. It is the gateway of SHAR, Shriharikota Rocket Launching Station and often called as Rocket Town. The barrier island of Sriharikota separates the lake from the Bay of Bengal. It’s a home to flamingos and painted storks– some 15,000 flamingoes visit the lake every year. There’s a Flamingo Festival hosted every February, which features a wetland-ecology exhibition. Tourists can also take bird- watching tours, nature treks and sailing trips. Even if you don’t make it to the festival, take a boat ride on the backwaters to see flamingoes, painted storks, open billed storks, grey herons, cormorants, white ibises, spoonbills, egrets, and reef heron. The wetlands eco system is considered as among the richest areas of bio diversity. Pulicat, by virtue of the mixing of fresh water with sea water is found to be an ideal habitat for diverse life-forms. 160 species of fish, 25 species of polychaete worms, 12 species of prawn, 19 species of mollusk and 100 species of birds are well documented apart from a number of other aquatic flora and fauna. The lake is also home to crabs, clams, mussels, oysters, snails, fish worms, insects, spiders, sponges, anemone, prawns, plankton and so on including rare endemic species like gilled leech, an unidentified blood red fish, etc., Rapid siltation has caused loss of bio diversity. It is seen that mangrove opllen is found on Sriharikota Island indicating their existence some years back. Loss of mangroves may be one of the reasons hastening siltation, reducing biodiversity and hence depriving fisher folk of their livelihood.
