PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

The board has been very busy this spring. One thing that we are working on is how the club can afford to publish Puli News in the future. As many of you know, for a while the membership just had the option of an on-line issue. Some folks prefer this but many do not. We, as a board, realize how important Puli News is to the membership so that, in this issue, you will find a short questionnaire. Please take the time to let us know how you feel about the best way to handle Puli News.

You will also find, in this issue, several Committee Head/Committee Memberships avail-able for folks willing to take them on. If you have an interest in any of these or helping some of the other committees, please let us know.

As we enter the summer, I find myself thinking about how quickly the National in October will be here. The committee has been working hard to make this a Puli weekend to re-member. I hope many of you can make the trip.

Anna Quigley, President PCA

The 2015 National Independent Specialty is getting closer. I now have confirmation that all of our events have been approved by the AKC. We will hold 2 Conformation shows (Regional and National) with Puppy sweeps and Veteran sweeps. We will be having (in conjunction with the Hungarian Pumi Club of America) 2 agility trials with Standard, JWW, and T2B in Regular and Preferred; 2 obedience trials with Beginner Novice, Novice, Grad Novice, Open, Grad Open, Utility, and Versatility; 2 rally trials with Novice, Advanced, and Excellent, 2

Herding Tests (Instinct Test -no experience necessary and earns a certificate with two qualifying performances; Herding Tested (HT title), Pre-Trial Test (PT title)) and 2 Herding Trials –all levels -(with sheep). We will have a Parade of Title holders, and a Parade of Rescue Pulik too! And don't forget our annual banquet, the welcome party, raffles and auction. As this is our 60th Jubilee it will be an exciting event with wonderful trophies and many, many sur-prises in store. So make your reservations NOW, the host hotel is filling up fast!

We also need people to volunteer ( no ex-perience necessary) to help with agility (on Thursday), obedience and rally (on Friday

and Saturday mornings) and herding (Sunday all day). No need to worry about missing your own events….the specialty is designed so that there is NO OVERLAP of events! So please volunteer – I guarantee you will learn a lot about performance events. And really how hard is it to sit in a chair and watch amazing Pulis, and put a bar back up in the unlikely event that one is knocked down (and surely if one is knocked down, it must have been by a Pumi). We promise that you will have plenty of time to spruce up your Puli be-fore conformation begins! Please email me if you are interested in helping out, [email protected]. I will also be sending

out an electronic sign up sheet soon- if you are a PCA member, please volunteer.

Something new this year....there will be designated people ringside at EVERY event to explain what is going on. So if you are a new Puli owner, a prospective Puli owner, or a long time Puli owner – and if you are thinking, “gee, I'd love to try something new with my Puli” – all you have to do is seek out the PCA member with the

“diamond” lanyard ringside and they will answer all your questions.

Since the first of the year, I have received 73 emails from prospective Puli buyers. Please be certain to list your kennel on the breeder listing page and send me an email so I can add you to the litter listing page if you have puppies available.

Soon, you will be receiving the annual nomination for Specialty Judge in the mail. This year we will be nominating and then in a separate mailing, we will choose the Judge for our 2018 National Specialty. At

the same time I ask for your nominations for Judge, I will also ask you to nominate a member of the PCA for the Sportsman of the Year award.Watch you mailboxes for the nomination paperwork in the next few weeks.

If you have moved within the past year, or changed your email addresses, want to be added to (or deleted from) email updates; please drop me a note and let me know. My email address is: [email protected].

Important Information for ALL Members of the Puli Club of America

REGARDING PULI NEWS

THE BOARD WANTS YOUR OPINION AND IDEAS Thoughout the year, Linore Cleveland, Puli News Editor, and the Board have desired and attempted to be more inclusive and in-formative about all things Puli by including more information in each issue of Puli News. We are now faced with a dilemma. We know that many of you enjoy the hard copy of Puli News (PN) that you have been receiving by post. We also know that several of you confessed to no longer reading PN online when online was the only option—which is why the hard copy was re-initiated. Un-fortunately, PCA can no longer afford to mail the issues using USPS because of the rising cost of printing and postage. We are seeking a solution and would like your suggestions. These are the options that the Board has discussed. We welcome more ideas… 1. Offer the hard copy to those members who want to purchase it at the cost to PCA (approximately $40/yr for members in the

US). Other breed clubs, such as the Airedale club, are making this offer to their members. This option has no effect on yearly dues and the cost of the hard copy of PN is only borne by the person receiving the hard copy.

2. Reduce the number of issues from 6 per year to 3 or 4 per year and continue to post a hard copy to every US member. This option will have an impact on communication with our members. However, this option will save on postage costs.

3. Reduce the page count of the issues — this also impacts communication with our members. 4. Raise yearly dues for all members. According to our Constitution and By-laws the dues cannot be raised more than $10 in any

given year. This will probably necessitate a raise in dues next year to defray costs and maybe continuing raises in following years. The disadvantage with this choice is that everyone will pay more when there are members who prefer to read PN online and don’t want a hard copy.

Please send the Board your comments and ideas to our corresponding secretary Julie Schuh, [email protected] or 1616 E Calumet Street, Appleton WI 54915. Puli News will continue to be available online to ALL members.

OPEN COMMITTEE POSITION(S):

The position of Specialty Advisor is open. PCA NEEDS someone to step-up and volunteer to fill this position. The position of Specialty advisor should be spread around the PCA membership. In case of emergencies or the dreaded burn-out , there will always be someone to pick up the reins and continue to insure we will always have our Specialties. If someone will volunteer, Patty Anspach, our current Specialty Advisor, would be overjoyed to have him/her shadow her this year. Don’t be afraid of the big sounding title [ Specialty Advisor ], There are many to answer questions, including AKC, and also to point you in the right direction. Please consider giving of your time and effort so our club , PCA, can continue to enjoy Specialties.

Web Page Committee looking for volunteers If you would like to help update and improve PCA’s website, please let us know. We are looking both for technical skills, to add and change web pages, and for creative skills in building new content. Technical: We are beginning our transition to using the well-known WordPress tool for many of PCA’s web pages. No special PC tools are needed, just your own web browser and a certain amount of computer literacy. BUT, you don’t need to be a web pro-grammer. We can work with you to learn WordPress, which is kind of like using a word processor. Content creation: The most important things are knowledge of the Puli breed and the Club, along with good visual design skills. Graphical layout and photo processing skills are a plus. If you are interested in volunteering or have questions, please contact the Chair of the Web Page Committee, Jim Moen at [email protected]

MORE IMPORTANT NEWS FOR PULI CLUB OF AMERICA MEMBERS

Additional Open Positions:

Herding Chair The herding chair for PCA serves as statistician to determine those Pulik who should be recognized in the Top 10 each year. The chair also organizes or finds a chair to organize a herding test(s) and/or trial(s) for each Specialty where it is possible to have a herd-ing event. Herding instinct is still strong in the Puli and it is important that the club recognize herding accomplishments by our dogs and support events that determine or demonstrate the strength of this instinct. Public Education Coordinator The public education coordinator oversees and provides assistance for the hosting of “Meet the Breed” events. In addition, the public education coordinator develops and distributes materials to publicize the activities of the Puli Club of America.

She is the first Puli to receive this title. At 9.5 years young she is still a great competitor and a wonderful companion and has such a love for life that she can’t help but make me smile. — Nancy

Editor Note: This is a major accomplishment for Kicsi — to obtain the Obedience Grand Master title, a dog must accumulate 2000 points based on their scores in Open B and Utility B where a dog earns points for a score of 190 or better. The maximum number of points for one such score is 15 — so Kicsi could earn not more than 30 points per trial (15 points in Open B, 15 points in Utility B). Congratulations KICSI and Nancy!

Hopefully, this year we will have many more people (members and non-members) and Pulik, new to PCA, joining us at the Specialty. It is a priority for PCA to make these people and Pulik feel welcome. We also need to respect the time constraints older members have at the Specialty due to grooming, showing, etc. So it is a PRIORITY to make everyone feel comfortable and address their needs. This year we will have designated PCA members available to answer questions. All are volunteers. Those members will be identified by wearing a rhinestone lanyard and badge when they have free time to answer questions and give advice. They will be delighted to address your needs at that time. The premium list for the conformation, obedience, and rally events is being prepared by Foy Trent Dog Shows and will be mailed to all PCA members and available on the Foy Trent web-site (www.foytrentdogshows.com) with a link on the puliclub website in the specialty section. If you are new to showing or competing with your Puli and you need help filing out the entry forms, please contact Julie Schuh, PCA Corresponding Secretary, at [email protected] and she will be happy to assist you.

See you at the Specialty.

the show catalog. Professional handlers, household members and current assistants to professional handlers may not exhibit. A cur-

rent assistant is defined as anyone employed by a professional handler on a full-time basis, or assisting a profes-sional handler at the show or any show during the cluster/weekend.

OBEDIENCE/RALLY The following classes will be offered in Obedience: Novice A & B, Open A & B, Utility A & B, Beginner Novice A & B, Graduate Novice, Graduate Open, and Versatility both on Friday morning and Saturday morning. Both High In Trial and High Combined will be recognized. The following classes will be offered in Rally: Novice A & B, Advanced A & B, Excellent A & B. A High Combined prize will be offered. The premium list which is being prepared by Foy Trent Dog Shows, will include the information and entry forms for the Obedience and Rally events (see the section labeled “New Members, Exhibitors… for more information)

PCA needs volunteers to help steward at these trials. Please let our Obedience Chair, Nancy Kelly ([email protected]) , know if you can help.

AGILITY The Puli Club of America will be offering two agility trials, limited to Pulik, with a Standard Agility class, a JWW class and a Time 2 Beat class. There will be both Regular and Preferred jump heights in each class.

PCA will be offering a High Scoring Puli award with special Rosette for each trial. High scoring Puli is determined by:

1. Highest combined score for a Puli qualifying in BOTH a Standard and a JWW class (combined YPS tie breaker) 2. If no double Q, a qualifying run with the Highest Standard class score, with YPS being the tie breaker

3. If no standard qualifier, then the highest score in JWW class, with YPS being the tie breaker 4. Since we have T2B classes, if there is no qualifier in either STD or JWW classes,

PCA will award the highest T2B score PCA needs volunteers to help with the trial. The volunteers need not have agility experience.

The flooring in Eukanuba Hall for Agility will be Tru-Blue Agility Matting

The Hungarian Pumi Club (www.pumiclub.org) is also offering two agility trials, limited to Pumik, at the same site and same time. There will be one trial secretary and one judge for all four trials and the premium list for all four

agility trials will be available on the Pumi Club website, a pointer to the website will be available on the PCA website. Pulik will enter only the Puli trials. The trial secretary will be Kristine Stewart (517) 449-3518 [email protected]

HERDING The Puli Club of America and the Hungarian Pumi Club of America will each be offering a set of herding tests and an A course trial (all levels) with sheep. The two tests/trials will be held at the same site and each is open to the Hun-garian Herding Breeds (Pulik, Pumik, and Mudik). Each club has their own judge. One of the clubs will offer HT and PT tests and Instinct tests and then the A Course trial. The other club will offer the A course Trial followed by the HT and PT tests and the Instinct tests. The tests/trials will be held at Green Gate Farms which is located in Hillsboro OH, about a 30 minute drive from Wilmington OH (south). Depending on entries, these tests/trials may run most of the day. Both clubs will offer day of entry for Instinct. Entries for the other tests and the trials will close on October 7, 2015 (one week after the closing for the other events at the Specialty). Cost will be $35 for any one of the tests, $45 for a trial class. Pulik can be entered in both the Puli and Pumi events. PCA will need volunteers to help with the Herding Event. Plan to attend these events and see our Pulik doing what they were bred to do — AND HELP AS NEEDED! The premium list for the PCA herding event will be available on the PCA website or from the Trial Secretary (Linore Cleveland) at [email protected] The Pumi Club premium list will be on their website (www.pumiclub.org). We have arranged to have all entry forms submitted to one address.

that you write a short resume about your Pulik accomplishments. This is a fun event and is not judged. PCA also has a surprise for your Puli. See you there!!!!!!

2014 Puli Agility Highlights

This article presents some Puli Agility highlights, milestones and statistics on the state of the Puli in Agility during 2014. In 2014 the number of Pulik that earned a qualifying score dropped to 24 from 34 in 2013. I hope that more Pulik and

their owners will give Agility a try in 2015.

Please Note: Most Puli names listed below are WITHOUT their titles, since titles change quickly and I don’t want any-

one to be unhappy because the titles might be out-of-date. There are some titles ‘as of’ 12/31/2014 and again these may not reflect current achievements.

Puli Club of America National Specialty Agility Trial 2014

It was not possible to have an agility trial in conjunction with the 2014 National Specialty in Springfield, MA.

New MACH Titles (Master Agility Championship) in 2014

Earning the MACH title in 2014 was Joe Lapine with CH MACH Piroskai Nutn Bt Bliss 4 Mardi Gras PT MXG MJG XF VP.

Each MACH title takes a total of 20 Double Qs (qualifying in Standard and JWW classes on the same day) and 750 speed

points (seconds under course time) from the Masters Classes.

Big Congratulations are in order!!!

New PACH Titles (Preferred Agility Championship) in 2014

No new PACH Title was earned in 2014.

The requirements for the PACH title are 20 Double Qs and 750 speed points from the Masters Preferred classes. The Preferred Classes jump 4” lower and are allowed an extra 5 seconds per run to complete the course.

Fast Pulik

Each year I calculate the Fastest Agility Runs by a Puli based on the information that I get from the AKC. Looking at the

2014 results, we see several repeat performers and a couple of new fast Pulik.

The Top Ten Fastest Agility Runs of each year are also posted on the Puli Club of America Website www.PuliClub.org.

The website has the fastest runs of each year since 2003. It is really interesting to see the increase in YPS (Yards Per

Second) over the years. Training methods have improved and handler skills have increased over the 2003 – 2014 time period, leading to some really incredible YPS increases. Check it out on the website, it’s very interesting.

Jumpers with Weaves (JWW) classes are made up of jumps (single bar and spread), tunnels (open and col-

lapsed) and weave poles. The Yards per Second requirement for JWW runs is much higher than the Standard agility

classes since there are no contact obstacles in the course. I calculated Yards per Second by dividing the number of yards in the course by the dog’s time.

The top 10 JWW (Jumpers with Weaves) Runs for 2014:

Standard Agility classes are comprised of the same selection of obstacles as in JWW, with the addition of three con-

tact obstacles (Teeter-totter, elevated Dog Walk, A-Frame), plus a table. The dog must touch the ‘contact’ zone (last

few feet of each ‘contact obstacle’). Missing the ‘contact’ zone results in a non-qualifying score, at all levels of agility.

The table is also a required obstacle, where the dog must stay for 5 seconds. The judge calculates the Standard Course Time based on the course length and required YPS then adds 5 seconds for the time that is spent on the Table. I calcu-

lated Yards per Second by dividing the number of yards in the course by the dog’s time less the 5 seconds for the table.

The top 10 standard agility runs for 2014:

AKC Agility Masters Ranking System

The AKC maintains a Ranking System for Agility dogs that are competing in the Masters level classes. This system is

based on the accumulation of Double Qs (Qualifying in Standard and JWW classes on the same day) and speed points (the number of seconds under Course Time of the dog’s run). The AKC publishes an annual MACH Ranking based on

scores obtained in a given calendar year and then uses these same types of statistics to determine the five invitees to the AKC Agility Invitational held in Orlando Florida.

The following are the various rankings for Pulik.

Piri has decided she likes agility again. She's spent this year having a great time running, sometimes qualifying but most of all having fun. She is the only dogs I've ever had that loves standard and hates jumpers. So we spent part of the year not doing jumpers or only doing it sporadically. We only do agility for the fun and I promised if it's not fun, then we don't do it. Piri is such an incredible dog. She's the sweetest puli, loves all other dogs and wants to mother almost everybody. She is top dog at home and in my heart.

Jane Slade Exum

Ronnie and Xena live on a 300 acre farm in southern NJ. Xena is a wonder-ful team partner with a great sense of humor, and is definitely quite opinion-ated on competitive runs, barking from the minute she enters the ring until the finish jump.

Stella is and always will be my energizer bunny agility girl. She is 10 going on 5. She will work until her tongue is hanging out and she is panting like an en-gine! She is the best agility Puli: making friends wher-ever we go. She is quite a character who loves to bump into people until they pet her. Stella is wicked fast – and seems to always be a bit too far ahead of me. She’s a little powerhouse of a Puli, and everyone loves to watch her runs. Stella is very animated and smiles all around the course. I love working with her. She is always “up.” I am looking forward to getting back in the ring real soon. Agility is FUN!

It is an honor to be recognized again in the Top 10. My mom and I are very pleased to know that this year’s Top 10 is marked by three Piroska Puli, in-cluding Mojo’s sister “Bliss” (#1) and Mojo’s son “Gabe” (#10). “Mojo’s” greatest accomplishments in 2014 were being recognized as Top Puli at the AKC Agility Invitational and being a large source of joy to me in a year that was marked by a number of personal challenges. “Mojo” will always be my VIP – Very Important Puli.

"Renata" is excited to be in the top ten. Renata loves agility, loves running, loves jumping and gen-erally loves everything about life. She is the most playful and happiest of all my dogs. She is always up to something whether it be with her agility dog friends (and she has many) or her human friends. She is a wonderful puli ambassador and great fun to watch as she flies over the ring. On course or not, Renata always has a good time. Her NQs are some of our best runs and it's hard to be serious with her since she's so adorable. She sounds too good to be true but she's all that and more. She congratulates all the other dogs in the top ten with her and hopes to see them all at the Specialty this year.

Jane Slade Exum

Harry and I have worked hard to have fun in agility. He is my “boy” and won’t work for anyone but me. He and I are just starting to be a team. Harry is a loving and adorable Puli, who has a lot of quirky habits which sometimes keep him from the elusive “Q.” We have been on a bit of a break while mom gets back in shape after her spine surgeries this winter. Harry was an Obedience Puli, who switched careers a few years ago. He really likes to get on the agility course and do a great job. I am looking forward to getting back in the ring soon with both my Pulis.

Agility is FUN!

I am very proud that Reggie has qualified for the Versa-

tile Puli award. She loves to please and always excels in

every discipline in which she has competed. Reggie loves

to show in the Conformation ring and earned high

scores in Rally. But her favorite activity is herding, be it

sheep or ducks. While competing in Herding Started

Ducks, Reggie won her class and then scored a High in

Trial. This last fall she qualified for her first leg in Herd-

ing Intermediate, winning a Second Place in her

class. We plan to continue to compete in Conformation

and Herding and maybe some new venues in the coming

year.

PULI RESCUE

Puli Rescue Thanks to each of you who made a donation to Puli Rescue when you paid your dues.

Puli Rescue thanks all of you for your generous donations. Please remember that Puli Res-cue is a 501( c ) 3 organization so all donations are tax deductible.

If you work for an employer who does matching gifts, think about having your gift to Puli Rescue matched by your employer.

Please consider using Amazon’s smile.amazon.com website and selecting “The PCA Res-cue Trust fund” as the recipient of the AmazonSmile donation from your purchases.

Pulis do continue to come into Rescue and require our funds to ensure they are ready to go to their new homes (updating of shots, medications, neutering, boarding until a new home is found, transportation, additional training — these are some of the basic expenses in re-homing a Puli).

In 2015 Puli Rescue has already had several Pulis come into rescue (so funds continue to be needed) The Puli Rescue committee is trying to facilitate the placement of a Puli unwanted by its owners into new homes without needing to take the Puli into Rescue. This approach saves Puli Rescue some monies but is often as or more time-consuming than just taking the Puli into Rescue.

If you are interested in being on the list for a possible Rescue, go to the website for rescue (pulirescue.org). There are instruction for how to get on the list.

IF YOU ARE WILLING TO BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED IN THE RESCUE PROCESS, PLEASE CONTACT THE RESCUE COMMITTEE!

VOLUNTEERS CONTRIBUTE GREATLY TO PULI RESCUE.

PCA’s Rescue Trust continues to be very grateful

for all the funds that support Rescue.

The PULI MEMORIAL WALL

CHECK OUT the PULI MEMORIAL WALL, now active on the web. There are currently 24 dogs memorialized on the WALL! If you haven’t looked, do so — you’ll see what great memories the Wall captures of much loved Pulis. Think about memorializing your departed PULIS on the Memorial Wall—it provides a lasting memory of each Puli.

All levels get a small photo on the main page of the Wall, with name and dates for the dog, the level will determine how much additional information about the dog is displayed on its individual page. We will crop the photo submitted to create the small photo on the main page, a larger version (see the levels) will be displayed on the individual page for the dog.

B. A PULI BREEDER WILL: · Be well-informed about the Standard of our breed. · Be aware that the purpose of breeding is to maintain or improve the quality of

the breed in accordance with the standard. · Use all available means such as knowledge of ancestors, and CHIC testing to

determine that breeding stock is free of inheritable disease. PCA required CHIC testing includes:

1. OFA or Penn Hip for hips 2. OFA for patella 3. OFA Degenerative Myelopathy (DNA test) 4. CERF (Canine Eye Registry)/OFA Eye Registry to be updated

recognizing that offspring might need housing for a considerable length of time.

· Not breed a bitch at her first season, before the age of 2, nor breed her more than 2 out of 3 consecutive heat periods, taking the health of the bitch into consideration at all times.

· Enter into all breeding arrangements with written contracts. · Keep accurate and thorough breeding records in full accordance with AKC

requirements. · Prevent all breedings that are not carefully planned and provide adequate

kenneling to prevent accidental or unplanned matings. · Insist that a visiting bitch be in the stud owner’s care and/or supervision

before, through and until completion of estrus, so that accidental mating to another stud not occur.

· Not substitute one stud for another without the knowledge and agreement of all parties.

· Pay careful attention to physical and emotional needs of puppies produced.

· Keep all puppies in the litter until they are a minimum of eight (8) weeks of age.

· Be aware at all times that producing puppies is a commitment and they remain responsible for puppies they produce throughout the lifetime of those dogs.

· Breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.

C: PERSON SELLING A PULI WILL:

· Maintain a reasonable price within one’s locale, which price should also be compatible with national prices.

· Intelligently and honestly classify stock as show prospect, breeding prospect or pet.

· Provide AKC papers with limited registration if the dog is a potential detriment to the breed.

· Ascertain that the prospective owner has the knowledge, ability and facilities to properly care for a Puli.

only those professional handlers whose behavior is exemplary. · Help the novice exhibitor and breeder. Use kind, constructive and honest

criticism. · Display good sportsmanship and conduct themselves, whether at home,

traveling, at shows, or in hotels, in such a manner as to reflect credit upon the Puli Club of America, themselves and the Puli as a breed.

LITTER LISTINGS

Breeder Litter listings are accepted from Puli Club of America members in good standing. Litter listings here will also be listed on PCA's web site at www.Puliclub.org/pcabreeders.htm. “In order for a Litter to be listed on the Breeders page in Puli News and Puliclub.org, a breeder must be a general member of PCA in good standing. They must also pay whatever the current fee is for the listing. Proof of the required CHIC health tests for hips, patellas, DM and CERF/OFA Eye Reg-istry for sire and dam must be provided. CERF/OFA Eye Registry testing on sire and dam must have occurred within the last 3 years”

Zeal to produce champions or perpetuate a bloodline must never compromise a breeder's sensitivity to the quality of life that every Puli bred will experience. Breeders must consider the welfare of the Puli above personal gain or profit. Breeders have the responsibility to insure the welfare of all puppies they produce and remain responsible for those Pulik throughout their entire lifetime. Should the situation arise, breeders are required to provide assistance to dogs of their breeding in need of re-homing, including taking the dogs back and fostering them until they can relocate them to a new home.

This wording has been added to insure that breeder's own the ultimate responsibility for the dogs they produce throughout their lifetime. The Puli Club of America Rescue Trust is not responsible for placing dogs bred by known people in the breed, and the Board felt that clear lines need to be established to advise everyone of their responsibility in the future. Should Rescue be advised of a Puli in need of re-homing their first obligation is to try to determine who the breeder is, and then contact that person in order that they can make the necessary

arrangements for their dog.
