CHI CHI IS NOT YOUR TYPICAL COVER MODEL.
BUT SHE SURE IS ONE LITTLE CUTIE, AND HAS
CERTAINLY FACED HER SHARE OF ISSUES IN
HER SHORT LIFE.
THIS IS ONE TINY PEKINGESE FROM SOUTH
AFRICA, WITH ONE BIG STORY.
Chi Chi fought for life from the very beginning.
Her birth was difficult and stressful and it looked
as though she wasn’t going to make it.
According to Chi Chi’s human mother, Benita,
“Chi Chi was the first eager little puppy wanting to
come out into the world. After a few minutes I
realised there was a huge problem and could tell
her head was stuck.”
When Chi Chi was eventually born, Benita
realised she had a split lip and was very weak.
“A week went by and I noticed Chi Chi’s [dog]
mother moved her to another room, separate from
herself and the other puppies, on a soft towel.
Chi Chi was still very weak and was being left out
of the feeding. I decided to take things into my
own hands and hand reared her with puppy milk. I
fed her every few hours day and night, trying to
nurse her back to good health.”
One night Benita noticed a change in Chi Chi,
“She looked and sounded strange – it was as
though she suddenly couldn’t breathe.” Benita
rushed her by car to the vet – her friend actually
giving the little Pekingese mouth-to-mouth on the
way in an effort to save her.
“I just couldn’t stand the thought of losing
Chi Chi. This little being had become such a big
part of my life, I’d been through a tough time just
before she was born and she was keeping me
going.”
Benita’s little angel Chi Chi was fighting for
her life that night, and what a little fighter she was.
Even the vet was astonished she made it through.
Benita said, “It was one of the most stressful and
devastating times of my life. I cannot tell you how
relieved I was she had been saved.”

CHI CHI THE LIONHEART
“Chi Chi was fighting for her life that night and what a little fighter she was.”
“We [Benita and her new partner] are not sure
how long she will be with us for, so we make sure
to love her as much as possible every moment.
“She is a very strong dog...my little fighter! She's
the sunshine in my life,” Benita said.
Chi Chi is also extremely protective of her human Mum. According to Benita, “My new boyfriend can't
even kiss me when she is near me because she wants me all to herself – I think she thinks she's a
big lion, threatening to attack anyone who tries to come close to me! But she would have to be the
smallest, strangest looking lion anyone has ever seen!” Benita declares. Due to her tiny stature and
unusual face, Chi Chi attracts ‘ooohs and ‘ahhhs’ from passers-by everywhere she goes. And she
loves the attention says Benita.

“One day, while shopping with Chi Chi, after hearing
her story, a shop keeper took her in his arms, prayed
for her and declared her to live long and be strong!
Everyone in the store clapped, and wanted to get
close to Chi Chi. Being the cheeky little attention
seeker she is, Chi Chi lapped up it up,” Benita
laughed.
“We [Benita and her new partner] are not sure
how long she will be with us for, so we make sure
to love her as much as possible every moment.

“Chi Chi is my best friend. She sleeps in my bed next to me
every night and she is so attached to a little green basket
that is her favourite toy. It is very funny – but that’s Chi Chi!
I am so thankful to have her in my life! I just can't imagine
life without my Chi Chi.”

Meet Paul McCreevey
Meet Paul McCreevey
The Pug Professor!
IMAGINE BEING ABLE TO STUDY PUGS FOR A
LIVING! WELL THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT
PRFOESSOR PAUL MCCREEVEY DOES.
Paul McCreevey is just an Aussie guy who
typically loves animals and in particular
dogs. But don’t let this humble and
classically laid back Australian fool you.
Paul is actually one of the country’s leading
veterinary scientists. His research findings
have been published in 11 books and over
50 journal articles. He is also one of only
two veterinarians recognised worldwide by
the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons.
For the love of a Snub!
Paul's work includes an array of research
on brachy’s (brachycephlic breeds - or what
Pugs and Snubs call ‘Snubs’ - that have
specific traits such as a very short muzzle
that includes bulldogs, pugs and shih-tzu’s).
One of his major discoveries is the hugely
different visual field brachy’s have
compared to other breeds which has
implications for dog training – and on
owners’ interaction with their pooch.
Pug and Afghan will see the world very differently!
In short, Paul’s research tells us that not all
dog’s view the world in the same way. This
work may help to explain some of the
behavioural differences between breeds,
with short-nosed dogs being less likely to act
like a running predator and hunt in packs and
more likely to be able to focus on human
faces.
In addition to it being very important for
brachy owners to understand the pitfalls and
risks (along with all their wonderful and
unique traits) of health soecific to the breed,
is it also great to see behavioural research
being undertaken to ensure brachy pooches
live a long and happy life.
Sounds like a pretty good job wouldn’t you
agree?
Professor Paul McCreevey is Sub Dean of
Animal Welfare at the University of Sydney,
Australia.
