20 years of changing lives through advocacy20 años abogando por una vida mejor

In the thirteen years I have been with Puente, I have seen teenagers go to college and graduate, entire families adjust their immigration status, and dreamers receive DACA status and obtain work permits and driver licenses. I have seen a basic health clinic open, free fitness classes flourish, our behavioral health team grow to meet complex community challenges, and green card holders become U.S. Citizens. The work at Puente, 365 days a year, has grown many fruits and supported infants and seniors, alike.

It is this sense of community and the urgent need for solutions for education, health, childcare and housing that framed Puente’s 20th anniversary celebration this year.

Thanks to your generous support over the past year, Puente has:

En los trece años que he estado con Puente, he visto adolescentes ir a la universidad y graduarse, familias enteras ajustar su estatus migratorio y soñadores recibir DACA y permisos de trabajo. He visto una clínica de salud básica abierta, las clases de ejercicio gratuitas florecer, nuestro equipo de salud del comportamiento crecer para enfrentar los complejos desafíos de la comunidad y residentes legales convertirse en ciudadanos de los Estados Unidos. One key to Puente’s growth has been its responsiveness to the needs of its communities—to be nimble and guided by the people who rely on its services. That strategy has yielded powerful results as participants not only ask for programs but have been stepping up to help run them.

Residents provide the engine that powers those efforts, and more. The result is a cohort of locals who may not have been born in the U.S., but who feel like they belong, as well as those who have lived on the South Coast for decades.

Puente continues to provide extensive health services for insured and uninsured residents including enrollment for health coverage, case management for participants with chronic illnesses, transportation and interpretation for medical appointments, dental screenings, cleanings and extractions at mobile clinics in Pescadero, vaccines and immunizations, and weekly medical appointments through the Coastside Medical Clinic based at Puente. Puente has increased preventive services through fitness classes like Zumba and exercise for adults 55+, ballet folklórico for children and adults, and soccer tournaments for farmworkers. We also offer healthy cooking, nutrition and women’s health classes.

Puente’s behavioral health services team supports empowerment through individual therapy, support groups and crisis intervention,

particularly around domestic violence.

While demand for these services has increased due to stress and uncertainty since 2016, changed County priorities have led to reduced funding and greater stress on Puente as we work to fill the funding gaps.

Students immerse themselves in ECE classes on the South Coast

Puente has long dreamed of bringing ECE [early childhood education] classes to the South Coast so that community members could learn how best to support the healthy development of all children in the community. In fall 2017, that vision became a reality.

A certificate program offered by Cañada College at Puente creates a way for adult students to obtain a California Child

Development Assistant permit. With an emphasis on the importance of nurturing the “whole child,” students in the program develop the skills, beliefs and attitudes to prepare children for future school success. Students receive financial and academic support to succeed in the ECE courses, taught in Spanish, as well as help to facilitate their educational goals like certificate programs, transfer to a Bachelor degree program, and career advancement.

Obtaining the Child Development Assistant permit will take two years, as students take one Early Childhood Education course per semester, along with an accompanying English as a Second Language (ESL) course, also offered at Puente.

The program’s schedule is tailored to support the adult—mostly women—students in their academic journey as well as enable them to continue with their full-time employment and demanding home lives.

The President’s “zero tolerance” policy has left residents of our community feeling unsafe, vulnerable and living in constant fear. Recent events like the forced separation of children from their parents, and immigration sweeps throughout Northern California have added to the fear and uncertainty, traumatizing adults and children in our community. Local residents can become victims if they do not know their rights.

Puente bridges the knowledge gap for undocumented immigrants through regular “Know Your Rights” workshops, immigration representation through the Board of Immigration Appeals (BIA) representatives and immigration attorneys, and tools for self-advocacy. Puente’s behavioral health team addresses fear and trauma caused by the political climate and administration policies.

Puente’s Community Resource Navigator, Laura Rodriguez, is Puente’s newest staff member accredited by the U.S. Board of

Immigration Appeals. She goes directly to farmworkers in the field during lunch or break times to answer questions and screen them for immigration benefits including U.S. Citizenship, Adjustment of Status, U-Visas, DACA renewals, and other administrative services such as renewal of a green card, certificate of citizenship and more. Puente’s Promotoras Comunitarias bring “Know Your Rights” workshops to workplaces and community events.

Puente worked to increase legal and immigration services for deportation relief, U-Visas and Violence Against Women (VAWA) process by advocating with local allies for funding to San Mateo County for a new Coastside immigration collaborative in partnership with University of San Francisco, Ayudando Latinos A Soñar (ALAS) and Coastside Hope.

Puente partnerships move women’s health and dental services to center stage

Many women living in and around the South Coast contend with impediments to access to care, language barriers, and general lack of health education. Many do not have easy access to a car to get to appointments, let alone a health care provider who speaks Spanish.

Thanks to a co-initiative with the San Mateo County Health System, Puente is now offering a women’s clinic on the last

Wednesday of the month. Marissa Pfohl, a nurse practitioner who speaks Spanish and serves on the San Mateo County Street and Field Medicine Team, is in charge. In-house clinic services include basic pelvic exams, breast exams, STD screening, pre-conception counseling, pap smears, mammogram referrals, and most forms of contraception.

Puente also ramped up its children’s dental services, thanks to a partnership with the Ravenswood Family Health Center. Ravenswood sets up a mobile dental clinic in a Puente classroom for a day. They bring a child-sized dental chair and other essential equipment, along with some toys.

“Knowing that dental caries are largely preventable and simple changes in a family’s lifestyle can help keep the children’s teeth healthy is essential for any community. But it’s especially essential in Pescadero, given how isolated it is, and the fact that getting children to and from their dental appointments can be time consuming, expensive and almost prohibitive for some,” says Yogita Butani Thakur, Chief Dental Officer for the Ravenswood Family Health Center.

Food and community at La Sala (The Living Room)Puente is built on the foundation of radical hospitality (practice of putting extraordinary effort and emphasis on making people feel welcome), and receiving strangers with open arms as brothers and sisters. This founding principle is perhaps most present in La Sala, Puente’s oldest program, where a newcomer can find a home-cooked meal and pleasant company twice a week. Most of the weekly participants are farmworkers on the South Coast, who are on their own here, without families. Many of the men who participate in La Sala have been living in Pescadero and the surrounding communities for several years. There are some newcomers, who are still acclimating to the community.

The men come to the social hall of the Pescadero Community Church for a homemade meal and an essential dose of camaraderie that helps alleviate

some of their intense isolation that comes from being so far from home. The single men who work in the fields and nurseries around Pescadero have always been able to count on La Sala, from the earliest days when the mission was defined as a ministry of bicycles, blankets and beans.

Puente remains committed to “welcoming the stranger,” and creating a sense of “home” for everyone on the South Coast.

Comida y comunidad en La Sala

Puente se fundó con base en la hospitalidad radical (práctica de poner un esfuerzo extraordinario y énfasis en hacer que las personas se sientan bienvenidas), y recibir a extraños con los brazos abiertos como hermanos y hermanas. Este principio fundamental tal vez esté más presente en La Sala de Puente, su programa más antiguo. Sidelined from Silicon Valley’s affluence, South Coast residents seek emergency rental assistance

Most people agree that it’s been a good year for the American economy, which has the lowest unemployment rate since 2002

However, in Pescadero, La Honda, San Gregorio, Loma Mar and other small communities on the South Coast, low-Income residents are persevering through the most frightening period of

economic uncertainty they have ever seen. That’s because the economic boom has translated into record housing scarcity in their communities.

When a trailer or apartment does become available, the rent is often so high that even dual-income families struggle to pay it, along with utilities, groceries, gas, and a myriad of other expenses.

In the past year, Puente has seen many requests for emergency assistance with rent and utility bills. Puente acts quickly to help meet financial gaps with County and federal funds as well as its own general funds.

Just this year, one family – 2 parents and 3 school-aged children – endured nearly a year of homelessness after being evicted from their Pescadero apartment when renovations needed to be done.

Nearly anywhere outside the Bay Area, a working family would have been able to find somewhere else to live. Instead, they laid their heads where they could… in their car, on the floor of a friend’s one-room home to keep their kids in school and some semblance of normalcy in their lives. The family searched for months for a vacant home. Eventually they found one. Puente then provided assistance for the rental deposit and first month’s rent.

High school graduate brings self-knowledge to collegeJacqueline Martinez, 18, is attending New York University, likely the first-ever student at Pescadero High to have enrolled at NYU. She lives in a dorm with strangers, and goes to class in a city where she didn’t know a soul at the beginning of the semester.

Life changed for Martinez the first summer she enrolled in the Puente Youth Program as a high school freshman. Puente took her group on educational field trips to destinations like San Francisco’s Mission District and to visit Google headquarters. “I found myself fascinated by the different people and cultures I saw.” That was her first ‘aha’ moment, but it led to many others. “Those experiences are what nudged me to challenge myself more and take the initiative to do more, to find a way to take more steps out of my town,” she says.

Martinez got to know her high school social studies teacher, Mr. Robinson. He arranged for Martinez to apply for a fellowship from the Half Moon Bay Order of Odd Fellows to attend the United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth.

Ultimately, Martinez received a full scholarship to visit the United

Nations headquarters in New York, along with hundreds of other students from around the world. That trip was when the second ‘lightbulb’ moment dawned. She realized she liked New York.

At high school graduation, Martinez received special recognition as class salutatorian, for having earned the second-highest GPA. She also received the Golden State Seal of Merit Diploma. A Puente donor then provided Martinez with a $5,000 scholarship.

In the past year, Puente leveraged $88,000 in scholarships for local college students.

Graduada de la preparatoria trae autoconocimiento a la UniversidadJacqueline Martínez, de 18 años, asiste a la Universidad de Nueva York. Es probable que ella sea la primera estudiante de la Preparatoria de Pescadero inscrita en esta universidad. La Honda Office continues to meet the needs of region

Puente launched its Exercise for Adults 55+ class in May and has been looking to expand its programming for older adults on the South Coast. The class is free, and consistently well attended. Despite its name, the class welcomes adults of any age.

The class owes its reputation to instructor Lynnette Vega, a friend and neighbor to many, who has lived in the La Honda community for about 50 years. She is an art therapist and facilitator who teaches exercises in relaxation and stress reduction at Foothill College and helps manage a variety of senior programs in Los Gatos. Vega also helps run the La Honda chapter of Indivisible, a grassroots national movement.

La Honda may be isolated, but its residents know how to advocate for themselves and get their needs met. For instance, a small,

invitation-only, group of seniors helps each other out when someone needs it, as there are no senior-serving facilities in or near La Honda. Whether it’s transportation, help around the house, or physical therapy, the neighbors are there.

Two Puente community health workers, based in La Honda, also work to identify community needs and leverage community resources.

OUR MISSION | NUESTRA MISION As the region’s only Community Resource Center, Puente serves the San Mateo County South Coast communities of Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar, and San Gregorio. Puente both advocates for our communities and leverages resources that foster economic prosperity and security, and that promote individual and community health and wellness. We support local leaders and work together with our neighbors creating solutions for our diverse communities.

Puente siendo el único centro de recursos comunitarios de la región, sirve a las comunidades de la costa sur del condado de San Mateo: Pescadero, La Honda, Loma Mar y San Gregorio.
