The FMAdigest thought for the last Mini Issue for 2009 it would put out the past events that happened since the last regular issue Vol6 No4. And also what is coming up for events in 2010, (what has been submitted so far).

Now here is a thought, the FMAdigest willingly and sometimes goes out of its way to find future events to advertise on the website and in the next regular issue. So to publicize and hope as many as possible will attend, and the event is a success and practitioners will gain knowledge.

After the event the FMAdigest likes to report on the event, on what happened, what was taught, and of course a couple pictures. If it was a good size event or the person who held the event can give enough information the FMAdigest likes to make a Mini Issue about the event and if really a lot of information a Special Issue.

Some people automatically send something to the FMAdigest about the event that was held. The FMAdigest contacts some people about their event in hopes to have something submitted. (It is good advertisement for the person who sponsored the event, the instructors of the event, and may even warrant another event if people found out what they missed and want another so they can attend).

Now we all know that during these economical times if the event wants too much money little participation is attained. And that must be understood. However, when the event happens to turn out prosperous or well attended and the people who held the event tell the FMAdigest “yes we will write something up with pictures and send it to you,” and then do not what does that say about the people who ran the event or the event itself? Maybe it was not as good as was said? Or their word is not their bond and they just talk to hear themselves? Maybe no advertisement is necessary, due to not wanting to hold another event so the next time it maybe has more participants? Or they may not have integrity to follow through (lazy) or maybe they are just too great (in their own minds) or are rude and are above giving a reason why they cannot produce as they said they would?

Anyway the FMAdigest wants to thank all those people who for the past 6 years have submitted articles or information on their events automatically, and to those that follow through and keep their word (showing responsibility and integrity), “We at the FMAdigest thank them”. For without those kinds of people the FMAdigest could not have a Past Events section, Mini Issues, and sometimes Special Issues and many would not know what went on, and possibly it would make up the minds of some to make sure not to miss the next event, or an event that had that particular instructor.

Representing the Imus, Secondary School Athletic Association (ISSAA) Competition and to be led by Punong Guro Felipe “IPE” Penales Jr. and Assistant Joel C. Mañozo, in which the participants are all the private and public school in Imus, Cavite, fortunately the Amara Arkanis Mandirigma won for the ISSAA and represented the Municipality of Imus to the upcoming North Cavite Sports Unit (NCSU). Again the Mandirigma of Amara Arkanis Won and the Champion for the NCSU, The Amara

Arkanis Mandirigma represent the whole North of Cavite which composed of the Municipality of Bacoor, Imus, Rosario, Tanza, and Noveleta, Cavite, the Amara Arkanis represented the whole north for the Provincial Competition.

In spite of being new and young in the field of competition the Amara Arkanis Mandirigma fought gallantly with other competitors with experience and advantage of the competition proper and it ends up with 2 Silver and 1 Bronze unfortunately one of the Mandirigma is overweight Erramon, Legaspi and did not fight for the competition still he is there to give support for his brothers and sister.

Legacy Martial Arts Studio is an Academy located in

Claremont/Upland, CA. Headed by Chief Instructor Guro Jason Cruz. At Legacy Martial Arts Studio students are educated on the history, language, culture, and martial arts of the Philippines. With the recent Typhoon that hit our motherland. Legacy Martial Arts Studio has participated in 2 events in October and November. Both Events that LEGACY has participated in has raised over $2321 for the victims of the Typhoons and counting.

The 1st event was organized by Stephanie Poserio, CAPAS of Pitzer College on

October 29, 2009. Among the performers were Hip Hop Violinist - Paul Dateh, Quest Crew (Winners of MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew), Legacy Martial Arts Studio-Submission Kali, and others.

The event had a great turnout as the mounds of the college were filled to capacity. The Demo began with a brief lecture about the Filipino Martial Arts and its rich history. The Kali Warrior Kids group was the crowd favorite receiving repeated ovations. Team Legacy Adults united and gave a great performance demonstrating double stick, single stick, edged weapons, and empty hands against multiple attackers as well. Team Legacy’s goal is to promote and preserve the Filipino martial arts and hope to participate in more events in 2010.

Memorial Tribute to Punong Guro Mark Lledo November 7, 2009

B. Lledo died unexpectedly of an aortic aneurysm. He was 34. His parents held a memorial service on the first anniversary of his death at the Traditional Wing Chun Kung Fu Academy in Mount Laurel, NJ USA. Teachers and students represented schools from Maryland to New York were friends from local Filipino communities brought their best wishes and support. The final part of the day was a showing of a video about Punong Guro Mark Lledo. Although this video depended on contributions from many sources, it could never have come to completeness without the extensive and talented efforts of Vico Viggiano.

Philippine Typhoon Charity Event November 14, 2009

The 2nd event was the Largest Global Charity Event of its kind. Groups from 4 continents held martial arts events simultaneously on the same weekend of November 14th 2009, organized by Mr. Parvez Alam of the Fighting for Lives Organization (fightingforlives.com).

Proceeds raised from each event, were donated to charity projects for less fortunate children. Legacy Martial Arts Studio chose the Typhoon Victims in the Philippines as their charity. It turned out to be a huge success. The entire Fighting For Lives event raised a total of $13,518.

The Charity Seminar started with Guro Jason Cruz of Submission Kali/Team Legacy. He demonstrated his empty hand curriculum which included practical stand up and ground techniques. As the Seminar went on more and more participants trickled in. A special guest also made an appearance Grandmaster Felix Roiles of Pakamut also donated his time for this event making it a spectacular Charity Event. His mix of comedy and powerful stick techniques kept everyone’s attention. This was Grandmaster Felix Roiles’ 2nd time at Legacy MA Studios. Participants left the Seminar wanting more and feeling great for participating in such a good cause.

4th Arizona FMA Friendship Gathering

It is almost hard to believe that there have already

been four FMA gatherings in Phoenix. In no way could I have imagined that what was just an informal, one-time, local get together would have turned into such a regular event. I was even surprised to hear that some of the participants actually wait in anticipation for the next Gathering,

ready to meet new people, get together with friends, share good food and experience the diverse styles and nuances of the Filipino martial arts.

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I would have ever been a part of something like the Gathering. I am thankful to have met so many wonderful individuals, each of whom offers something unique and special. In an area where MMA is extremely popular, I find comfort in knowing that even without vast, commercial success, there are practitioners and instructors out there, each doing their part to keep the Filipino martial arts alive and uphold quality over quantity. I would like to thank Mr. Ted Rabino and Mr. Pietro Vitelli for offering their time as instructors for the event. Special thanks go out to those who came from out of town to attend the gathering:

I learned recently that Jon Dacpano, one of the participants at the Gathering, is an

event reviewer. While living in L.A., he wrote for the now defunct “Jew Review”, a Hollywood insider. He is currently doing his own reviews that he will highlight on his upcoming online show “The Super Duper Show”. This show will focus mainly on comic books but will also encompass video games, anime, movies, new technology and the like. Although he attended the event solely as a participant and, by his own admission, did not

really pay particular attention to details as a reviewer, I was able to cajole him into writing a quick review. 4th AZ FMA Friendship Gathering Review by: Jon Dacpano

“On November 15, 2009 in Phoenix Arizona at Margaret T. Hance Park, Michael Butz of the Arizona Chapter of the Fierce Tigers Martial Arts Association, along with other groups in the state of Arizona, held the 4th Arizona Filipino Martial Arts Gathering.

At first glance, you see a bunch of people with sticks of different color, length, size and material swinging them in odd ways to the untrained eye. To the trained eye, it was candy of other flavors that could be tasted with a smile, awe or a question of why. With close to 50 in attendance, the park looked like it was a battlefield scene on break, learning the choreography before the director yelled, “Action!” It was extraordinary to see that so many different people were there to participate in learning and sharing the Filipino martial arts even if their styles were not the same.

The first instructor to teach was Ted Rabino, an Arizona Representative of the O.G.E (Original Giron Eskrima). What he first showed was some stick-based techniques with some holds and some disarms that looked cool and unusual but never the less good to have in your tool belt when you want to make someone look stupid for messing with you if they had a stick or if you had one handy to subdue them. He then showed some close and long-range techniques and then went technical with some Espada y Daga.

After Mr. Rabino taught, there was a short break for

lunch and then it was Michael Butz’s turn. He showed some blade-based applications that dropped some jaws. First, he asked the participants if they knew a certain defense known as “outside vertical” or “outside sweep” and applied it to the number two strike using the same technique but without actually blocking. After a few minutes of still confused faces, he moved on to a position and range of blocks that dropped

jaws again. A full force strike was given to him and, although he blocked it, it seemed to everyone that he was hit as the strike passed through his stick but allowed him not to feel the blow.

Even though he showed how it was done, the technique is hard to absorb and a little unnerving to perform until you get an understanding of why it is done in that fashion. Then the light turns on in your head and you are glad you know it from that point on in your life and glad he shared it with you.

From stick to blade application, the

training changed to empty handed techniques with the next instructor, Pietro Vitelli, a graduate of Bahala Na Martial Arts Association under Grandmaster Tony Somera. He started with some hubad-style sensitivity drills changing it up with what you might think might come next and unexpectedly not only using your hands but your elbows as well as your shoulders and head. He then showed a variation of the drill by getting in

a squat or half-squat position. Mr. Vitelli was more emotionally verbal about getting hispoint across when showing his movements. He quoted a great line, and I love hearing this quote, "Be like water!"

Overall, it was great gathering and I hope for more practitioners to come, grow

and help preserve the heritage of the Filipino martial arts and keep the old ways strong.”

KKAASI Competition Amoranto Multi Purpose Gym November 20, 2009

North Fair-View High School competed at the Amoranto Multi-Purpose Gym. The event was organized by the Department of Education. All public schools in Quezon City, Philippines were invited to attend and compt. Grandmaster Frank Aycocho’s team competed at different events during the competition.

Sparring padded stick, male and female division, synchronized anyo, traditional and cultural Arnis anyo with the native tune of the Mountain Province war dance, an interpretation dance form against multiple attackers, 8 students are ready for individual traditional anyo and creative cultural anyo.

The KKAASI team received 1 bronze and 2 silver medals in sparring.

History has been made with the declaration of the Arnis Bill of law as the

Philippines National Sport signed by the President of the Philippines dated 11 December 2009. Effective Arnis will now be a part of academic curriculum from grade school to high school and college. To finalize a standard teaching method a meeting will be soon assembled for all Grandmasters of the different system for everyone to follow, there shall be no more politics as to who is better and who is best in teaching Arnis.
