Visiting Clergy in Our MidstOn July 11th the Rev. Dr. Shelton Hale Bishop,

retired rector of St. Philip’s Church, New York City, the largest Episcopal Church in the world, arrived aboard the Matsonia, after serving his Church as Deacon and. Priest for forty-three years, and St. Philip’s for twenty-four years. He went there in 1923, serving for ten years as assistant to his father, Hutchens Chew Bishop, and then succeeding his father as Rector. Together they gave eighty years to this famous parish. At a service of thanksgiving for his rectorship he and his father were given tribute by these words, “Rectors of this parish—they gave reason for all men to glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ —Preachers of the Word.”

He has come to us that he might further serve his Church in these Islands, ministering wherever there is a need, and without remuneration. He is a man with a wealth of experience as a priest and preacher. At his departure fiom New York he had many great and heart-warming tributes paid to him. One was a testimonial luncheon given in the Grand Ballroom of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, New York, by his Wardens, Vestry and congregation. Many of his distinguished colleagues in the ministry, of various denominations,

members of the parish and friends from all walks of life and from many states were in attendance..

W ith a tremendous interest in social welfare, he has been the father of many organizations and institutions for the betterment of mankind. He is a man with a rich devotional life that has spiritually nurtured young and old, rich and poor, saint and sinner. We count it a great blessing that he is in our family in his life of “retirement”, which has more the zest of atomic energy than anything else. He is to serve as interim Vicar of St. Matthew’s Mission and has purchased a home in the Kaneohe Bay area.

T he R everend D onald Glazebrook The Reverend Donald Glazebrook, D.D., and his

wife have been in the Islands since July. The Rev. Dr. Glazebrook had served as rector of St. James’-by-the- Sea Church, La Jolla, California for many years, where he was very much beloved. Before leaving California he was honored by his parish and given a substantial purse so that he and his w ife could enjoy a trip to Honolulu and later a trip to his home in England.

He has very graciously assisted with services in our missions where w e have been without clergy during furloughs. It has been a great joy to have him and his wife as members of our Diocesan Family and we hope they may continue to be with us for some months. They are staying at the Tradewinds Apartments.

The V ery Reverend Paul Roberts In October one of the Church’s outstanding

preachers will come to Hawaii to assist the Church in any way possible, without renumeration, in his retire- | ment from the active ministry. The Very Reverend Paul Roberts, well known to our Church people in Hawaii, will arrive with his wife to spend an indefinite

period in the Islands. He retired recently as Dean ol St. John’s Cathedral, Denver, Colorado, where he served for twenty-one years. Dean Roberts has been here on two previous occasions—once in 1952, when he conducted a Clergy Conference for us and again in 1955, when he was guest speaker for our Convocation. He and Mrs. Roberts will be welcomed by many friends upon their return.

Men and women in all walks of life feel the impact of his ministry. A tribute in a recent issue of the Churchnews had the following editorial about him:

D envers Dean Roberts—Gallant ChristianThe city of Denver is a mile high. It has a big

heart, a big soul, and a big vision. Mounting guard above the city stand the great mountains and in the city are men to “match these mountains.” Since 1936 Paul Roberts has been the dean of Denver’s St. John’s Cathedral. His ministry in this exciting city has been one of the glories of the contemporary Church in America.

Dean Roberts has been in the midst of nearly every good thing in Denver. He has preached and lived a Christianity which is relevant to the world in which we live. He has been unafraid to champion unpopular causes. His vestry and his people have supported him, even when some of them have not agreed with him, because they have always known that he was an honest and humble disciple of Jesus Christ. His great heart has leaped across every barrier of race and class and creed. A powerful preacher in one of the great pulpits of America, Paul Roberts’ finest sermon has been the life he has lived. He has practiced what he preached, with an eloquence which has touched everv corner of his city.

A few weeks ago Dean Roberts retired. Denver is

a bigger city, in its soul and in its vision, because of the noble ministry of this gallant Christian. There are only a few really great priests in every generation. Paul Roberts is one of them in our day.

New Kindergarten in OkinawaAn important step forward in our work in Okinawa

has been the completion of the kindergarten building at Mawashi, near St. Peter’s and St. Paul’s Church. It has been completed at a cost of $27,500, $20,000 of which was given by the United Thank Offering of the Woman’s Auxiliary and the rest from special gifts. Miss Constance Applebee, of Hants, England, gave $1,500 toward the building and Mrs. Robert Belleville raised over $1,000 by speaking about Okinawa. The rest was realized from various gifts from women throughout the Church.

National Council Member HereMr. John Reinhardt, Director of the Department of

Promotion of National Council, with Mrs. Reinhardt, stopped in Honolulu enroute to Australia, where he is to be the guest of the Department of Promotion of the Anglican Church. He w ill visit Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales, lecturing on the promotion program of the American Church.

W hile in Honolulu he was the guest of the Bishop at a dinner meeting at the Pacific Club for the clergy on Oahu and laymen representing each parish and mission. He presented the new program of promotion of National Council and some of the Every Member Canvass materials.

W e were pleased to have the Reinhardts visit the Diocese.

Visit In HawaiiThe Reverend Douglas H. Loweth and his wife,

parents of the Venerable Gerald P. Loweth, Archdeacon of Hawaii and Vicar of Holy Apostles Church, Hilo, visited their son and daughter-in-law for a few weeks this summer. He is rector of Christ Church, Norwich, Connecticut. It was a great pleasure to meet them when they stopped in Honolulu enroute to Hilo.

Queen Emma Square Duplex CompletedAt long last a program to get rid of the termite-

eaten and dilapidated cottages in Queen Emma Square has been started. Two cottages were torn down and a duplex apartment was built in their stead. It was completed the first of August and is a great improvement to the Cathedral Close property. The two apartments are to be occupied by the Rev. Canon Paul P. Savanack, Administrative Assistant of the Diocese, and Mrs. Kenneth O. Miller, Secretary of St. Andrew’s Cathedral Parish.

Classrooms to be DedicatedThe beautiful new classroom building at St. An

drew’s Priory will be dedicated on September 5th by the Bishop. This is a dream realized by the Sisters of the Transfiguration who are in charge of the Priory. They have greatly needed science laboratories and additional classroom space. This attractive and modern building will provide this.

Collection of Dolls given to St. Andrew’s Priory

Mrs. Blackshire M. Bryan, w ife of General Bryan, recently stationed in Honolulu, gave a beautiful collection of Japanese dolls to St. Andrew’s Priory when she left for General Bryan’s new assignment. It was a most thoughtful gift and one that will give great pleasure to all who see it. The dolls are to be placed in a case in the library of the Priory.

Welcome Third ChildThe Reverend and Mrs. David P. Coon, former

Vicar of St. James’ Church, Kamuela, Hawaii, w elcomed their third child, Karen Elizabeth, born July 4th. She was born in Flint, Michigan. W e congratulate the parents and welcome her into our Diocesan Family.

In September the Rev. Mr. Coon will join the staff at lolani school as a chaplain and teacher.

Diocesan Christian W itness Endeavor Praijer Almighty God, our heavenly Father, help us to

seek thee and to find thee and to know thee. О Saviour of the world, Son of God; teach us to love thee and follow where Thou leadest. О Holy Spirit, guide and inspire us in our Christian Witness Endeavor to know Him whom we worship and to fulfill His will for us. Bless our undertaking to bring to Him those who have not yet known Him. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Four Things to Do1. To pray daily, using special prayer which has been

and as many weekday services as possible.3. To endeavor to bring with me to each service

attended on W ednesday nights at least one non- Church goer.

4. To try to bring someone to Baptism or confirmation or both. The Bishop is writing to every adult, every young

person and every boy and girl in the Diocese, asking their help in this project, to become missionaries as it were, to bring others to Christ. Too often w e have a passive attitude toward our religion and our endeavor to make our Master and our Church known to others. This big program is to stir up in us a live and acting witness of our faith.

Join us in making this a big and important step forward in our Church life.

To spend a Year In EnglandThe Reverend E. Harvey Buxton, Jr., will leave

soon to spend a year in the D iocese of Chichester, Sussex, England. He has been serving as a Chaplain at lolani School and has assisted in several of our congregations where we have not had clergy. This summer he has been at St. Mark’s Church Honolulu, for the Rev. Joseph Turnbull, who has been on furlough.

The Rev. Mr. Buxton has made many friends while in Honolulu and we shall regret seeing him leave. We send him forth to this new venture with our very deep Aloha and wish him every happiness in his new work.

IVcw Members of Our Diocesan FamilyChaplain (Lt. Col.) Clarence E. Hobgood has

arrived to serve at ITckam Air Force Base. His last assignment was Kirtland Air Force Base, New Mexico. In World War II he served in the China Burman India Theater.

He is a graduate of Yale Divinity School and the Episcopal Theological School at Cambridge, Massachusetts, and Wake Forest College, North Carolina. He and Mrs. Hobgood arrived in early August. We welcome them as members of our Diocese Family.

New clergy arriving to serve as chaplains at lolani School are the Reverend Robert N. Stretch and the Reverend Arthur B. Ward. The Rev. Mr. Stretch has until recently served as a chaplain in the United States Navy. He is a graduate of DePaw University and Seabury-Western Theological Seminary. He was ordained to the Diaconate in 1937 and to the Priesthood in the same year.

The Rev. Mr. Ward has been rector of All Saints Church, Newark, New Jersey since 1951. He has had a rich experience as priest in the dioceses of Montana and New Jersey. He has served as Chairman of the Department of Christian Social Relations in Montana, and of the Department of Christian Education in New Jersey. He, his wife and three children arrived on the 29th of August to take up their work at lolani.

When the Rev. Mr. Ward left All Saints’ Church, his congregat'on, knowing that he was coming to Hawaii, gave $4,000 toward an Island home for their departing rector. lolani School matched this amount so that a prefabricated home could be erected on the campus grounds for the Ward family.

Mrs. Ward is to teach in the kindergarten at lolani.

St. Elizabeth’s Parish to Have New Rectory

Work has started on a new rectory for the Rev. Canon Wai On Shim, of St. Elizabeth’s Parish, and Mrs. Shim. This is a much needed improvement to the parish property, since the former rectory was badly termite eaten. The men of the parish have done all the work of razing the old rectory, thereby saving the church a considerable amount of money.

Next year the parish hopes to replace the present parish hall and day school building with a new educational building. The men will also raze the present building so that the cost of this can be applied to the new building.

A Bus for Leper Colony in OkinawaThrough the generosity of the Rt. Rev. Walter

Gray, Bishop of Connecticut, $1,000 has been given toward the purchase of a used bus for the Leper Colony at Airaku-en, Okinawa. The Bishop is trying to get more than one bus so that the people in the colony can be taken on sight-seeing trips around the island.' Many of them have been within the colony walls for over thirty years. Others were born in the colony and have never seen anything but the confines of their home. They are now permitted to take such trips, if transportation can be provided for them by our mission.

Supervisor of Grounds and Buildings at Cathedral

Mr. Walter V. Rodenhurst, a long time member of St. Paul’s Church, Makapala, Hawaii, and Mrs. Rodenhurst are living at 222-B Emma Square. They have been faithful members of the Kohala Mission for many years, and their departure from St. Paul’s Church has been a great loss. However, we feel most fortunate to have these devout members working at the Cathedral.

Church SchoolT here are three things regarding our children and

their children attend Church School regularly, that they take their children’s Christian education as seriously as they do other education in the schools, that they get them to the Church School on time and w ith some degree of regularity. W e only have one hour a w eek to help you in your child’s Christian education.
