Aaron Spiro Concert Contemporary Christ ian Music Art ist

By Rev. Greg Buell, Associate Pastor

On Friday evening, February 17th at 7:30 p.m. our TVPC Worship Ministry will be hosting a concert by Contemporary Christian Music artist, Aaron Spiro. Born in Seattle, Washington, this gospel artist from the Pacific Northwest worked with three-time Dove Award winner Charlie Peacock in 2002 for his debut album, “Sing.” Released by Sparrow Records, the album showcased the Seattle artist's devotion to

the church and closeness with God. Spiro co-wrote his striking-ly insightful songs of faith with Peacock, who had already worked with such successful artists as DC Talk, Switchfoot, and Sarah Masen, Jason Birch-meier, Rovi.

Aaron had a passion for music from an early age, and as his interest grew, his uncle took him under his wing to help grow his gift. "Every time we got together, he would show me how to play and what songs he was writing. He would let me come down to California and we would write together or I’d sit in on a session. That was a big influence." His ear-ly musical ventures included being a member of the rock band I Am, I Am and then the more acous-tic, singer-songwriter duo Spiro & Furlan. Touring in their native Pacific Northwest and playing camps and youth groups, the band’s musical endeavors garnered much attention. He eventually moved in-to a role as worship leader at the church where he grew up. Since that time, he has made a number of re-cordings and participated in a number of worship compilations including The Wonderful Cross, Dis-cover '02 and Left Behind. In addition to his debut album, “Sing” in 2002, Spiro recorded “Cure” in 2007. In 2010 Aaron Spiro was executive producer of The Story: Vol. 1 by Soma Communities which includes the song, “Beautiful Morning” which may be familiar to attendees of our contemporary wor-ship service. Our youth first learned the song while serving on a mission trip in Canada last sum-mer. Spiro is a colleague and friend of youth minister, Luke Crook and we are grateful to him for intro-ducing this talented artist to our congregation. In addition to singing and playing a concert on the 17th, Aaron has agreed to conduct a workshop with our Worship Band as well as meet with the youth on Sunday morning. We encourage you to come to this free concert and to invite friends and neigh-bors alike to attend this uplifting and inspiring evening of music.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday provides the traditional start to the

Lenten season and is generally celebrated by a worship

service where the leader makes the sign of the cross in

ash upon the foreheads of all participants who come

forward to receive it. Biblically, ashes were used as a

sign of repentance and mourning, a way of expressing

one’s sorrow before God (see Job 42: 4-6, Matthew 11:

21). In the Ash Wednesday service, participants are

asked to remember their own sins that led to the cru-

cifixion of Christ and to begin the Lenten journey of

turning from them as a part of accepting His gracious

love. We will observe Ash Wednesday with three ser-

vices on February 22 at 7 a.m., noon, and 7:30 p.m. in

the sanctuary.

Taizé Prayer Service - Taizé, an ecumenical Chris-

tian monastic community of brothers, founded in the

1940’s by Br. Roger in Taizé, France, has enjoyed a

strong following worldwide, especially among the

youth. Its unique form of prayer service in which

simple music of sublime beauty is sung repeatedly by

the congregants, scriptures are read, and periods of

silence are held allowing each person to pray and

meditate. The darkened sanctuary, lit only by can-

dles congregants place in the chancel, creates an at-

mosphere where a spiritual calm descends, encourag-

ing deep reflection and focused prayer. It’s an expe-

rience not to be missed.

go to benefit scouting, our local school grad night, as

well as this year’s signature charity, Bernie’s Book

Bank. Bernie’s Book Bank facilitates the collection,

processing and redistribution

of quality new and gently used

children’s books among at-risk

infants, toddlers and school-

age children living throughout

Chicagoland.

So come and have fun and

give back! We need people to

help with set-up, serving, taking tickets, and clean up.

Professor Woodbridge has

also taught as a visiting professor at Northwest-

ern University and the University of Paris. He

served as a Senior Editor of Christianity Today

and has written a new book with Maurice Poss-

ley. The book is about exemplary faith of a

young American soldier who had a trust in our

Lord Jesus Christ. He was as a young musician

from Mount Vernon, NY, commissioned as a Se-

cond Lieutenant and sent to Europe to battle his

way through France and into Germany. In Hit-

ler’s homeland, Ira, “Teen” Palm accepts the

assignment of his life. He and his men are sent

into Munich ahead of advancing Allied forces to

capture or kill Adolf Hitler. In a Munich apart-

ment, Palm finds a golden gun.

Professor Woodbridge’s father was a Presbyter-

ian Minister and led the congregation in which

“Teen” Palm became an active member. Profes-

sor Woodbridge has pieced together the histori-

cal facts from his father’s records and those that

knew “Teen” Palm and his deep faith in God, all

the way to his death from cancer at age 53.

From the book, “Palm had an uncanny ability to

speak about God in a manner that was inviting

and nonthreatening.”

In God’s Time...Clinica Tzeltal to Open!

We believe our time has come! At long last, the Clinica Tzeltal in Chiapas, Mexico is about to open. It has long been a dream of the Tzeltal Synod, and has been 5 years in the actual making. Our relationship with the Tzeltals has gained strength, and exhibits mutual trust and respect. We have met cultural challenges, financial set-backs, and legal obstacles. But certainly we have experienced great joys, as well! It has been a tes-tament on how God can use the least of us for a greater good. Our biggest and ongoing challenge now will be to staff and operate the clinic with dedicated, culturally sensitive personnel. The clinic will be open to all, but will cater to the Indigenous Tzeltal people who live in the surrounding area, and have been medically under-served. In many cases, there has been NO medical care available at all. The clinic will never be self sustaining due to the reality of the economic status of the people in the area. This means that continual efforts will be necessary to provide medical care, salaries, and medications. We will continue our rural medical caravans. There will always be a need for care in the re-mote areas of these mountains. And we will con-tinue to work together with our Christian brothers and sisters, the medical and support persons, the

paramedics, the pastors, wives and lay people in-timately involved in the ministry. We will support the clinic financially, personally, and prayerfully. We will continue to learn together. A grand celebration is planned for March 2nd, 2012. The locals call it a "3 Cow Event", meaning that a large number of people are planned to at-tend, and that villages and small churches will contribute rice, pesos, and cows for meat to serve

the masses. Following the Dedication, we will hold a medical week, to be held in our new clinic! If you have any interest in the clinic: financially, personally, or prayerfully, please contact me. I would love to share more. Our host and missionary in Chiapas, Pastor Pablo Feliciano Cruz and his wife, Jan, are de-lighted and expectant for this beautiful day to come. Pablo is the spirit and drive behind this

and many other meaningful ministries in the area. Pablo teaches, preaches, pastors several church-es, and lives missions. The opening of the clinic and the provision of medical care is a direct route to people's hearts, both the heart of the served, and of those doing the serving. For me, providing hope and healing is a direct extension of God's call to us to serve one another, and to share faith. I am the more blessed!

Carolyn Santostefano, a RN, examines a very brave patient in Chiapas, Mexico.

The people of Tzeltal and the surrounding area line up for medical attention.

First Annual Christmas Tea

The First Annual Christmas Tea was well attended with more than 60 participants at two different seatings

on Sunday, December 4th. The beautifully dressed women and children snacked on finger sandwiches, muf-

fins, and cream puffs and drank an assortment of tea and hot apple cider. The Fireside Room was used as

our tea room and looked so pretty decorated for Christmas.

eant told the story of an investigative reporter team for a newspaper who wanted the facts about the birth

of Jesus. As the reporters observed a rehearsal for a church Christmas Eve pageant the church children

taught them through their songs that “Like the Wise Men,” we’re all searching for the truth and the gospel

accounts of Jesus’ life and how Jesus was sent to us as a baby is the “Gospel Truth.” Over 75 young voices

praised God with great enthusiasm! See the children on Sunday, March 18th at 11:00 a.m. share “Son Seek-
