Public Service

• Throughout our history, amateurs have established a reputation for public service communications

• When all else fails!!• When called upon we fulfill one of the most important

purposes of amateur radio• Local, State and Federal Governments recognize our

abilities to assist when needed


Public Service

• 97.1 Basis and purpose for Amateur Radio.• (a) Recognition and enhancement of the value of the

amateur service to the public as a voluntary noncommercial communication service, particularly with respect to providing emergency communications.


Why Public Service?• Practice net protocols which prepares everyone for an

actual emergency• Keep equipment in good operating condition• Promotes Amateur Radio to others unfamiliar with the

hobby.• FUN! All amateur operators are welcome. If you’re new

to the hobby, it's a great way to learn from others • Earn RARA points

Event Mapping● Route Lat, Lon pairs may be provided by the

event sponsor, captured with GPS, or created using Google Maps

● Google My Maps may be used to create the map for printing or use in the command post or with smart phone. Example Here

● Export .KML file for use with APRS.FI● Edit .KML file to add icons for the aprs display● Locate modified .KML file on the web to be

read by APRS.FI● A link may be built to allow the map to overlay

the live APRS Position Display● APRSDroid for Android or APRS Pro for

American Diabetes Assoc.Tour de Cure

• Rochester Tour de Cure is the #1 event in the US• Date: June 9, 2019• Start Location: Xerox Campus Webster, NY• Time: 6:30am - 4:00pm• Courses Supported: 100, 62.5, 40, 25, and 12 miles• (50) HAMS will support the course at rest stops and in SAG vehicles. SAGs

will transport cyclists to the nearest rest stop for repair or assistance.• Over 2,000 Riders raising >$1,000,000 for the ADA • Mobile, HT, and APRS are used to support the event



• APRS to track SAG vehicles• Weather Radar provides real time information• VoIP phones for assistance requests from the cyclists• RoIP link from the command center to the ARES trailer

and / or repeaters for the event• Google Drive is used to share event information in the

Command Post

Communications Command Post is located near served agency operations personnel

● Cellular modem/router provides access to internet based services

○ Event logs and data are shared on Google Drive

○ VOIP access to emergency services and event participants via cell phone

○ ROIP access to event HAM repeaters via Allstar

○ ROIP access to event HAM repeaters via ARES Van

○ Situational display of APRS map and weather radar

● Commercial Radios or FRS radios are provide communications with the on-site agency representatives

● IP Link to ARES Van


ARES Van is located with line-of-sight access to the HAM repeaters.

● Served Agency provides electrical power when needed

● IP Link provides ROIP connection to the Command Center.

● Allstar Node provides the radio connection to the primary, secondary, and backup repeaters.
