SCHOOL CONTRIBUTIONS In the coming weeks families will receive an invoice for Voluntary School Contributions. We ask that families support the education of their children by contributing $49.00 per student. This is capped at a maximum of three children per family i.e. no payment is necessary for the fourth child. Each year the school budgets a certain amount to provide students with necessary materials for their education. Your contributions go towards supplying items such as:

• Exercise books • Art and craft supplies including paint brushes, crayons, art paper, paints, cardboard, scissors

etc • Home reading material • Library books and online resources • Books for specific class reading programs • Maths equipment such as hands-on materials including rulers, calculators … • Sports equipment • Photocopying • Software programs and licensing agreements • Resources for PBL reward days

I am sure parents will agree that students benefit greatly from the ready availability of these essential items. Your assistance in contributing to this important aspect of the school budget is greatly appreciated.

THANK YOU ERINA LEAGUES CLUB Once again Erina Leagues Club is supporting the school this year by sponsoring our monthly volunteer draw. Here at Woodport we are very fortunate to have so many volunteers that support the students and staff on a daily basis with such things as reading, writng, maths, sport, the uniform shop, canteen, gardening, fundraising activities and in so many other areas. Not only do the staff enjoy having volunteers in the school but the students just love it when a parent of family member is able to assist. To recognise all those who volunteer we will be holding a draw on the last Friday of each month. The person drawn out will receive a $20 gift card for Erina Leagues Club. The first draw for the year will take place this Friday 22 February. All you need to do to be eligible for the draw is to write your name in the book of entries at the front desk once per month when you sign in as a volunteer. We really appreciate and thank Erina Leagues Club for supporting the school and our volunteers. CALENDARS All families have now received their events planning calendar for 2019. The calendars have some major events that will be occurring throughout the year. We encourage you to place the calendars in a prominent position in your house and add new events to them as they occur. It would also be beneficial for your children to add any of their personal class events to the calendar, as this will assist them with their own organisation. WOODPORT NEW FAMILIES “GET TOGETHER” On Wednesday 27 February from 9:15 am - 10:15 am, we will be having a meet and greet session for new families, both in kindergarten and new enrolments from all grades. Existing families are also

welcome to attend. We will gather in the staffroom – part of the administration building – ask for directions at the office if you are not sure.

Starting a new school and/or sending your child off to school for the first time can be a very daunting process but it does open up a whole new world for everyone in the family. This session is a chance for you to meet some new people, learn more about things happening within the school and ask any questions you may have whilst being in an informal setting. We will discuss such topics as school jargon, student welfare, reward systems and certificates, Positive Behaviour for Learning (PBL), canteen, P&C, volunteering, reports, stages, school communication, technology program, events and first aid support. All parents, carers, babies and toddlers are welcome and morning tea will be provided. Hope to see you there.

FUN RUN/CROSS COUNTRY On Friday this week we will be launching our major fundraiser for the year, a fun run that will be held in conjunction with our cross-country carnivals on Wednesday 27 March. All students will receive an orange brochure outlining what is involved. All money raised will go towards purchasing STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) resources as well as begin saving to erect some much needed awnings. Please read the fundraising information under the P&C section of the newsletter for further details.

UNIFORM SHOP Welcome to Laura Economos who has just started volunteering in the uniform shop and will be taking on the role of the coordinator. A big thank you also to Louise Drummond who has continued in the role until her successor was found and for the ongoing organisation and support she continues to provide despite all her children moving onto high school. Welcome also to Eve Hennessy, Nicole Johnson, Gem Carter and Tina Harper who have also recently joined the team. Thank you to Kelly Spalding, Lindy Watson, Linda Scown, Jan Bulisolevu, Bronwyn Allen, Sarah Hyland, Leanne Moir, Casey Savage, Nadine Hamlin, Belinda Orriss and Lucy Jones who continue to assist and support our new recruits.

A reminder that this year marks the two-year anniversary of the change in school uniform. That means that we now expect everyone to be wearing the two toned polo in place of the lemon blouse (girls) and plain blue polo (boys). The polo and new sport shorts can be purchased from our uniform shop or Lowes at Erina Fair. The school uniform shop now accepts EFTPOS. You may also order uniforms online and the volunteers will deliver the order to your child’s class on a Monday or Friday. If anyone is experiencing financial hardship and needs assistance please do not hesitate to contact me.

Having a school run uniform shop allows us to offer uniforms at a slightly more affordable cost and all proceeds raised go back to directly supporting our students. If you are able to help out, please leave your name at the front office and we will put you in contact with Laura Economos.

DANCE SUCCESS On Monday, we had six students audition for the Regional Junior Dance Ensemble. Gaining acceptance into the ensemble is not only sought after, but an extremely difficult task to accomplish

Looking for somewhere to send school uniforms that no longer fit. Please consider sending them into the school for our second hand clothing pool.

I would like to congratulate Emmison F, Addison B, Ella N and Lucinda W who were all successful in gaining entry into the group. Well done girls! We look forward to watching you perform next term at the Central Coast Dance Festival. INFORMATION BOOKLET The school has an information booklet that can be found on our school website under the heading ‘Our School’. In this booklet it outlines information about bell times, attendance, before and after school care, uniform, volunteers, communication, awards, child protection, curriculum, medical conditions and much more. It has direct links to relevant websites and forms. Click on the link below to access the booklet. http://www.woodport-p.schools.nsw.edu.au/our-school/information-booklet

EMERGENCY LOCK DOWN DRILL Last week, we had a lockdown drill for all students, staff and visitors to our school. These drills ensure that if an emergency situation does occur we all know what we need to do to be safe. They also allow us to evaluate the procedures in our Emergency Management Plan and change or update any that are necessary. In the near future we will conduct an evacuation drill to meet with our Work Health and Safety requirements. DOGS ON SCHOOL GROUNDS Unfortunately, due to Work, Health and Safety regulations people are not allowed to bring dogs onto Department of Education grounds unless you or a student requires a guide dog. If you need to bring a dog onto the premises for any purpose, you must request approval from the Principal in writing and a risk management plan needs to be in place.

SCHOOL PHOTOGRAPHS 2019 Yes it's that time of year again.

School Photographs will be taken on Friday 15 March. Today, each child has received an individually marked envelope outlining the packages available. Please take the time to read the relevant information printed on the envelope. You may either order online or bring the envelope and money in on the day. Please note: No change will be given on the day.

All children are to wear their summer uniform including the new polo shirt for boys and Stage 3 students.

Family Portraits will be available on the day for school age students attending the school. If you would like a family portrait please collect a separate envelope from the front office.

If you have any questions please contact the office or Jade Bush.

SWIMMING CARNINVAL This year’s swimming carnival will be held on Friday 1 March for students from Years 3 to 6. Year 2 students who will be turning 8 this year and who are capable, competitive swimmers may also participate. The carnival will be held at the Peninsula Leisure Centre at Woy Woy and students will be transferred there and back by bus. The program of events is available on the school bag app and on the school website. We are hoping for maximum participation regardless of your child’s swimming ability, as we will run fun activities throughout the day that will not involve swimming. Please note: students are expected to remain at the carnival until it is completed. It is a condition of entry for school swimming carnivals that no child is to swim in any other pool other than the designated 50 metre pool. That means if you intend on signing your child out early they WILL NOT be allowed to free swim in the other pools until the carnival is over. Any child wishing to be considered for the medley at zone level need to submit their time to Mrs Eaton, signed off by a squad coach.

We cannot run the carnival without parental support. If you are able help on the day, please fill out the form at the bottom of your child’s permission note with your contact details (or see Mrs Eaton or Mr Brown). Roles include recording desk, time-keeping, judging, marshalling and general support. We really appreciate your support and volunteering is a great way to get to know other parents in the school. Please note all volunteers must have completed an Appendix 5 and provided 100 points of ID to the office prior to the event. Hope to see you there.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE SCHOOL CANTEEN WILL NOT BE OPEN ON THE DAY OF THE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

FRIDAY 1 MARCH STAGE SPORT DAYS Due to some whole school organisational changes some sport days have been altered. Please note below the sport days for all stages. Children are to wear their sport uniform, joggers and bring a water bottle to each session.

ERINA HIGH SCHOOL’S OPEN NIGHT

Erina High School’s Open Evening will be next Wednesday 27 February in their school library. The evening will commence at 6:00pm. The open night will allow families to see and hear about the many exciting programs available at Erina High, talk to staff and students and enjoy a number of displays. This night is open to all families of students in Stage 2 and Stage 3. Erina High School provides an excellent education, so why not go and check it out for yourself!

TJUDIBARING AECG What is the A.E.C.G? The Aboriginal Education Consultative Group (A.E.C.G.) is a community based voluntary organisation that has been operating from a grass roots level since the late 1970’s and is the peak advisory group for Aboriginal education in NSW. The A.E.C.G. caters for pre-school through to Tertiary education.

What can the A.E.C.G do for you? A.E.C.G. is an avenue for parents and community members to have a “voice”. It’s your chance as a parent, caregiver or student to have a say in what happens in your child’s education and be aware of what’s happening in your local school and community.

How can I get involved? Membership is open to parents, aunties, uncles, caregivers and community members. Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal members are invited at a cost of $2 per year.

What happens at a meeting/yarn up? The meetings are short, very informal and informative. You will have an opportunity to voice your concerns, hear about opportunities for the kids and families and meet new people. Little ones are very welcome. Light snacks and refreshments will be provided.

The next Tjudibaring A.E.C.G. meeting or Yarn-up is on Wednesday 27 February, in the library at Kincumber High School with a 5:00pm start for our Aboriginal/Torres Strait Islander community only and 5:30pm for other interested members of the community. Membership is just $2. Everyone is welcome so come along and have a yarn.

TRAVELLING ON BUSES Please note that all students travelling to school on buses and are eligible for an opal card need to tap on when they enter the bus. Bus services have indicated that they will be introducing a team of Driver and Customer Support Officers whose role will be to ensure students are using their opal cards correctly.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 2 are eligible for an opal card if they are a resident of New South Wales. There is no minimum walking distance criteria.

Students from Year 3 to Year 6 are eligible for an opal card if they are a resident of New South Wales and the straight-line distance from their home to school is more than 1.6 kilometres. They are also eligible if the walking distance from home to school is 2.3 kilometres or more.

Details on opal cards are available from the following link:

https://www.opal.com.au/en/about-opal/opal-for-school-students

Please ensure all children have their opal card in a safe place in their school bag and that they always tap on when they enter the bus.

If you have any concerns, you may contact David Bain from Red Bus Services on 4332 8655

WIPING OUT WASTE (WOW) AT WOODPORT The staff and students of Woodport are getting serious about the problem of waste. Last year alone, our school had 19 collections of general waste at $84.90 per pickup. That’s a total of $6,707.10 and thousands of kilograms of rubbish going to landfill. We are excited to be working on a joint venture with the specialist teachers of Rumbalara Educational Environmental Centre to address the issue of waste and develop a program to guide the students through a scientific inquiry and waste audit.

Tomorrow all students will be involved in the waste collection process. Every piece of rubbish generated on this day will be placed into colour-coded buckets to see what kind of waste we are producing. On Friday, every class will be involved with sorting and weighing rubbish as part of the audit. This is a wonderful opportunity for our students to see first-hand the excessive and unnecessary waste that is a part of every day school life.

It is simply wonderful to see the enthusiasm and motivation that students have for finding solutions to real world problems. Once the waste audit has been completed, we will be working closely with the students to develop creative systems for managing waste in more sustainable ways. We will keep you posted. This project is the students of Woodport using their scientific skills and reasoning to make Woodport and the world a better place to live.

Stage 2 have been working on creating a mural using waste products such as straws and plastic lids.

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING AND VIOLENCE The ninth annual National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence will be held on Friday 15 March. As part of this day Woodport will be holding a Friendship day. The day will fit in with this year’s school theme of the Year of Kindness. Research has proven that when we are kind to one another it increases our happiness, resilience and ability to perform at a higher level. The aim of the National Day of Action is an important opportunity for the whole community to reject bullying and cyberbullying and help keep young Australians safe. The theme for 2019 is Bullying. No Way! Take Action Every Day.

The following links have been developed by the Government and provide you with resources you may use when discussing issues with your children:

SEASONS FOR GROWTH PROGRAM Change and loss are issues that affect all of us at some stage in our lives. At Woodport Public School we recognise that when changes occur in families through death, separation, divorce and related circumstances, children benefit from learning how to manage these changes effectively. We are therefore offering a very successful education program called “Seasons for Growth” which will commence early next term. This program is facilitated in small groups of no more than eight students of a similar age group. The program is based on research that highlights the importance of social support and the need to practise new skills to cope effectively with change and loss. The program focuses on issues such as self-esteem, managing feelings, problem solving, decision-making and effective communication and support networks. “Seasons for Growth” runs for eight weeks and each weekly session is 40-50 minutes. The program concludes with a “celebration” session. Later this year each group will have the opportunity to meet for a further two sessions to build on their earlier learning. Students can only participate in this program if their parents have granted permission. If you would like your child to participate in this program please contact your child’s class teacher or Mr Day for a brochure that outlines the program and a permission note. Woodport Public School is pleased to be able to offer this important program and we are confident that it will be a valuable learning experience for those who request to be involved.

If the demand to attend the program is high, then a priority list may be established with some students attending the first program, whilst others may have the opportunity to attend later this year.

STAGE 3 SURF FUN DAYS Our Year 5 and 6 students who participated in the Surf Fun Days at Toowoon Bay this week had an enjoyable day. Through participation in many engaging and fun sand and water activities, students learnt surf skills, beach awareness, rescue techniques and sun safety. There were smiles all round and the days were an invaluable learning experience for all.

TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL Our transition to high school program has started. Year 6 students were lucky enough to have had Darren Brailey (Deputy Principal) and students from Erina High School talk to them about the many programs and opportunities available in Year 7. It is great to see our students feeling positive about the upcoming transition events offered by Erina High School including GATs Day, NAIDOC Day, primary fun days and sports gala days. This program has been highly successful at ensuring our students’ transition to high school is smooth and exciting.

1C & 1S STEM Challenge In History we are discovering structural features of the Sydney Harbour Bridge. Our students were given the challenge of using 40 Lego blocks to create their own bridge. They had to count out the blocks, design their bridge then construct it. Many tried the first time without success, re-designed and tried again. Students then completed a written journal about their process. We saw some amazing designs, well done! Mrs Clayton & Mrs Stark

SCHOOL VOLUNTEERS A reminder that all volunteers must have completed a Working with Children Check declaration form (Appendix 5) and provide 100 points of identification to the ladies in the front office so that they can be photocopied and securely stored. This only has to be done once and will last until your youngest moves on to high school. We have been implementing the WWC declaration for many years now and we need to remain vigilant at all times to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our students. If you have completed the form, thank you. If you need to, please see the office as soon as possible. We look forward to continuing our partnership with parents and carers within the school and maintaining a safe and happy environment for our students.

If you are not sure about which procedure you need to do then please see Mrs Walter or Mrs King at the office.

VISITORS TO THE SCHOOL Please remember that ALL visitors to the school are required to visit the office before going to one of our classrooms or contacting students in the playground. It is mandatory for all visitors to sign in and sign out at the office and wear an identification visitor badge. This is important as it enables the school to have a register of who is in the school at any given time particularly in case of an emergency or evacuation and most importantly to keep our children safe. Outside of before and after school, the easiest way to discuss something with your child’s teacher (and less disruptive to their class) is to ring the office and organise an appointment.

FAMILY CONTACT DETAILS At the beginning of each year we ask families to ensure that their contact details are accurate, which includes email address, mobile numbers and emergency contacts. Thank you to those families who have already updated their details. Accurate information is extremely important in the event that we have to contact you regarding your child.

P&C CORNER P&C meetings occur on the 3rd Monday of the month. We welcome all new members and all new ideas. It is a great chance for everyone to share, meet new people and help our school! Thank you to everyone who attended last Monday night. Our next meeting will be our AGM on Monday 19 March at 7pm in the staffroom. At this meeting P&C Executive positions will be filled. People will be elected into the positions of P&C President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer along with other roles and responsibilities. If you are interested in being involved, please come along and join us. We are very lucky to have such a wonderfully, caring group of parents who are extremely enthusiastic about supporting all students in our school. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact any of the members of the P&C or Mrs Boland.

FUNDRAISING This year we are excited to announce that we will be holding a Fun Run fundraiser in conjunction with our Cross Country Carnival. We will be raising funds for STEM and an awning over our fabulous new seating area.

Each child will come home full of enthusiasm and with a brochure giving full details on how to register and set up your student profile for this event.

Our Cross Country/Fun Run will be held on Wednesday 27 March. This fundraiser will be run online. It is very easy to access and set your child up so they are ready to start their fundraising. If you do not have access to a computer you can still fundraise just keep an eye out for the cash donation page in the booklet your child brings home.

There are rewards galore with this fundraiser and all children will earn fantastic prizes from as little as $10 in raised funds. All rewards can be claimed online after the event. Also, as soon as your child has raised only $1 they will automatically go into the draw to win a $20,000 Webjet Family Experience eGift Card.

This is going to be a great day and everyone is welcome to come along, support and cheer on their child/children and friends. More details will be provided as the event gets closer. Keep an eye out for the orange booklet coming home this week.

STUDENT INSURANCE You may not be aware that the Department of Education does not provide accident or medical insurance for students enrolled in government schools. As we all know, accidents do occur. The P&C have purchased a group personal accident and sickness policy at a cost of $4.50 per child that will cover ALL students enrolled at Woodport Public School for out-of-pocket expenses if an accident occurs twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week starting from 1 February up until the 20 January 2020. This policy covers a wide range of injuries and it is not restricted to school operating hours. This is the form to use to make a claim:
