Exhibits and Theatre

Charlotte Moorman at the Block Museum of Art The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston The Block Museum of Art presents performances, exhibits, and discussions about the work of Charlotte Moorman (1933-1991), a groundbreaking, rule-bending artist, musician, and advocate for the experimental art of her time. Trained as a classical cellist, she performed and championed the works of visual artists, composers, and choreographers redefining art – collapsing the boundaries between media, and renegotiating the relationships between artist and audience. Block Museum hours: Tuesday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM Wednesday – Friday 10:00 AM – 8:00 PM Saturday – Sunday 10:00 AM – 5:00 PM A Feast of Astonishments: Charlotte Moorman and the Avant-Garde, 1960s-1980s & “Don’t Throw Anything Out: Charlotte Moorman’s Archive” Fri, February 5 to Sun, July 17, free The Mary and Leigh Block Museum of Art, 40 Arts Circle Dr., Evanston Contact: [email protected], 847-491-4000 This exhibition explores Charlotte Moorman’s performances, the festivals she produced, and her commitment to making experimental art accessible to all.

Page and Stage: Shakespeare at Northwestern Libraries Sat, April 23 to Fri, September 2, all day, free University Library, 1970 Campus Dr, Evanston Contact: Clare Roccaforte, [email protected], 847-467-5918 William Shakespeare did not write from a lofty tower; his relatable themes, colorful characters, sharp satire, and bawdy jokes have always marked him a man of the people. Join Northwestern Libraries as we revel in our many holdings, from rare books to theatre archives to our general collection, that give students and faculty different ways to discover, learn from, and re-tell Shakespeare’s tales.

Landscape of Subjunctive: Taehoon Kim Fri, June 24 – Fri, Aug 12, free Dittmar Gallery, 1999 Campus Dr., Evanston Taehoon Kim’s work evokes a place between the subconscious and the evolution of substance. He uses materials that are modified and hybridized, as a metaphor for amorphous communication and the struggle for psychological interaction between space and colors. Also, his work attempts to reveal and develop a persuasive reflection on the essence of humanity and our relationships with other creatures.

One Book, One Northwestern

We think we want information when we really want knowledge.

The signal is the truth. The noise is what distracts us from the truth. Nate Silver, The Signal and the Noise (2015)

One Book, One Northwestern is a community-wide reading program hosted by the Office of the President to engage the campus in a common conversation on a carefully chosen, thought-provoking book. The 2016-17 One Book One Northwestern choice is Nate Silver’s The Signal and the Noise. Silver, the founder and editor-in-chief of FiveThirtyEight.com, will deliver a keynote address at Northwestern on Thurs, October 6, shortly before the 2016 presidential election. It is a natural choice for Northwestern given the school’s investments in interdisciplinary work, data science, and quantitative analysis. This entertaining, elegant book on statistics and forecasting makes the world of data science accessible and it is a reminder that statistics are only as good as the people who wield them. Silver breezily investigates how predictions are made in a wide range of fields, including chess, baseball, and politics. He offers hopeful examples but weighs the process against a series of predicable catastrophes, such as the September 11 attacks or the earthquake in Fukushima, Japan. Events related to The Signal and the Noise will start in September 2016. For more information, please contact Nancy Cunniff at [email protected] or 847-467-2294.
