What is the most likely kind of injury resulting from manual materials

handling?

It is probably fair to say that every worker who lifts or does other

manual handling tasks is at some risk for musculoskeletal injury. Low

back injury is the most likely kind of injury. The complete elimination of

this risk is not realistic because MMH usually involves awkward postures

and repeated forceful movements. However, people can reduce the

number and the severity of manual handling-related injuries

substantially by using safe work practices.

Does training reduce back injuries?

There is little evidence to indicate that training alone reduces the

number of MMH injuries. When combined with work design, training is

an important element in the prevention of injuries. Proper training also

shows the worker how to actively contribute to the prevention of

injuries. A good training program should:

• make the worker aware of the hazards of MMH

• demonstrate ways of avoiding unnecessary stress

• teach the worker to handle materials safely

Syukur Alhamdulillah kita masih berkesempatan untuk

meraikan hari raya bersama keluarga dan sanak saudara.

Semoga kita dipanjangkan umur agar dapat ketemu lagi

Ramadhan yang akan datang. Sememangnya Ramadhan

ini amat bermakna bagi kita semua.

Sempena bulan Syawal yang baik ini, beberapa tips yang

ingin dikongsi sedikit sebanyak bagi mengawal kolestrol di

musim perayaan ini. Maklum lah juadah hari raya di

Malaysia ini kebanyakkannya mengandungi santan, daging

dan telur yang tinggi.

Tips #1-Makan Buah

Amalan memakan buah-buahan adalah langkah mudah untuk

mengawal tahap kolestrol dalam badan kita. Bagi sesetengah tempat,

ambil peluang balik kampung dengan membeli buah-buahan

tempatan. Apa-apa jenis buah adalah baik untuk bantu badan kita

mengawal kolestrol.

Kita juga sendiri digalakkan untuk menyediakan sajian buah dalam

menu rumah terbuka sebagai galakkan kepada tetamu untuk amalan

memakan buah agar sama-sama peroleh manfaatnya.

Sambil kunjung mengunjungi rumah sanak saudara kita masih boleh

kekal aktif bersenam. Bagaimana? kalau dah rumah sedara yang

hendak dikunjung itu berdekatan elok kiranya kita berjalan kaki.

Sekurang-kurangnya badan kita berpeluh sedikit berbanding tidak

mengeluarkan peluh langsung.

Kita percaya rumah sanak saudara dan rakan taulan yang

dikunjungi mesti ada signature dish kan? Sebagai contohrendang tok dan soto ayam sedap di rumah terbuka, di situ kita

dah boleh rancang kuantiti dan jenis makanan yang kita hendak

cuba. Jadi tak perlulah kita makan juadah yang sama dan

berulang kali pada hari yang sama.

Tips #3-Rancang Menu Yang Hendak Dimakan

Kenyang ke makan dalam kuantiti yang sedikit macam tu?

Jangan risau kita tentu kenyang sebab bila dah mengunjung

banyak-banyak rumah mesti kita menjamah serba sedikit

bukan? Jadi cuba amalkan dengan meminta pinggan yang

lebih kecil dari yang disediakan supaya dapat kita kawal

kuantiti makanan yang kita makan di sesebuah rumah.

Amalan ini sangat membantu melancarkan tubuh badan kita memproses

makanan yang kita makan. Malah dengan meminum air kosong ia membantu

mengurangkan risiko jerawat tumbuh pada wajah kita akibat makan kuah

kacang yang sedap (bagi mereka yang alergik dengan kacang).

Meminum air kosong boleh membantu mengurangkan risiko sembelit,

membantu menyingkirkan toksin melalui perkumuhan dan membantu

pembakaran kalori.

Di samping kita berseronok berhari raya dan berjumpa sanak saudara, kita

juga perlu beringat kesihatan diri kita. Memandangkan raya sebulan jadi

banyak lagi masa dan peluang untuk kita menikmati juadah yang enak. Oleh itu

pesan memesan dan beringat-ingatlah ketika makan dan selamat mencuba tips

yang dikongsi ini.

About the Author

Aziz Basiran is a well-known Occupational Safety and Health (OSH)

Consultant in Malaysia. He holds a master's degree in Industrial Safety

Management. Currently, Aziz is the principal consultant in his own

consultation company, AZIZ EHS CONSULTANT.

Dr. Mohd Rafee Baharudin is a Senior Lecturer from the Department of

Community Health Universiti Putra Malaysia. He is currently the Director

of Occupational Safety and Health Management Office of UPM.

Fakhrul Anwar A. Affandi, is a well-known Occupational Safety and

Health (OSH) professional in Malaysia. He has more than 18 years of

technical experiences in OSH. He trained OSH practitioners in various

professional courses including the Lead Auditor for OHSAS 18001, MS

1722, ISO 14001 & ISO 9001 and Lead Tutor for IRCA (International

Registered of Certificated Auditor) Courses.
