Public Art promotes quality of life, contributes to the story of ‘our place” and allow us to celebrate the arts and artists (creators,

makers, and artists) in our community. We want to embody the larger idea of using the arts as a way of “Creative Placemaking”

in our community. “Creative Placemaking” harnesses the power of arts and culture to allow for more genuine public engage-

ment. By bringing together community members, artists, creators, makers, and other stakeholders, we can use art and cultural

strategies to implement community-led change. This approach aims to increase vibrancy, improve economic conditions, and

build capacity among residents to take ownership of our communities.

Art can be used to do a number of things: Welcome people to our community, Give positive exposure to our area, Attract busi-

ness and positively impact tourism, Encourage and direct foot traffic, Personalize our community and build character and identi-

ty, Demonstrate pride that attracts new residents, and Transform eyesores or blank spaces into community assets.

The questions below will help us shape the conversation regarding Public Art. Please take some time to answer. If you have oth-

er suggestions or thoughts that we have not covered there is a place at the end for you to tell us. When answering the ques-

tions, keep in mind that there are different faces of public art. Public art can be as direct as a sculpture on the corner (pocket

park) or a painting on the wall. It can be integrated into the architecture of a building, transform everyday street amenities like

lights and benches, or simply impact a site for a limited time (temporary). We want to think broadly about the concept of Art in

Public Places and at the same time start to structure ideas for engaging with art, artists, makers and creators. Ideas can be about

temporary exhibits, pop-up exhibits and markets for up and coming artists or those already established and/or pocket parks.

And finally, even though this is about the City of Young Harris and our valley, we would love for this discussion to become a con-

nection with our larger community and region.

How can our community be helped by Art? Or what priorities can be helped by Art?

What locations would you like to have are, see art or cover with art? Where would you like to see public art placed or utilized in

community?

What types of art have you seen that you like or dislike?

What types of media can be used to create public art?

Who should be involved in making public art? (local artists, national artists, youth? You can give specific names if you want…)

Public Art is a reflection of what our community values. What would be appropriate for reflecting our community today?

Without reducing our community to a “theme” are there stories, images, symbols that strongly relate to our cities, county, region?

How do we connect the arts to economic development?

What are marketing ideas to showcase public arts?

How do we use art to draw tourists?
