Turning vulnerability into a strategic advantage

In just four decades, Singapore has overcome water shortages despite its lack of natural water resources and pollution in its rivers.

Driven by a vision of what it takes to be sustainable in water, Singapore has been investing in research and technology. Today, the nation has built a robust, diversified and sustainable water supply from four different sources known as the Four National Taps (water from local catchment areas, imported water, reclaimed water known as NEWater and desalinated water).

By integrating the system and maximising the efficiency of each of the four taps, Singapore has ensured a stable, sustainable water supply that is not weather resilient, capable of catering to the country’s continued growth.

What PUB does

Collection

Rainwater is collected through rivers, streams, canals and drains, and stored in 15 reservoirs. Various reservoirs are linked by pipelines so that excess water can be pumped from one reservoir to another, thus optimising storage capacity.

Production

Raw water is piped to the waterworks for treatment.

Distribution

After treatment, the water is stored in covered reservoirs before being distributed to customers.

Reclamation

Water that has been used by customers is collected via an extensive sewerage system and treated at water reclamation plants. Used water is a resource too – treated used water is further purified using advanced membrane technology to produce high-grade reclaimed water, known as NEWater.

AAEE Annual Award (2009 ) - Marina Barrage, Singapore’s

latest waterfront icon was conferred the Superior

Achievement Award - the highest honour of the

competition for the best project entry – at the AAEE

Annual Awards Luncheon held in Washington, DC, USA,

on 6 May 2009.

Global Water Awards 2009 -Crowned ‘Water Project of

the Year’ at the Global Water Awards 2009 in Zurich,

Switzerland, on 28 April 2009, the Deep Tunnel Sewerage

System was selected as the water project with the most

significant contribution to water technology and

environmental protection.

Excellence Award for Outstanding Overall Corporate

Reputation Enhancement Award 2008 - PUB won the

overall Grand Prize in London in the Golden World

Awards for Excellence 2008 organised by International

Public Relations Association (IPRA).

Stockholm Industry Water Award 2007 - PUB won the

prestigious Stockholm Industry Water Award at the World Water Week in Stockholm in 2007.
