THE COPPER TRADITION

IN BUDAPEST

Copper has been used in architecture for centuries because of itstechnical properties, durability and appearance.The application of copper has proved to be reliable and economical.The colour, subtle shine and elegance of artifacts made of copperhave also increased its popularity on a wide scale.

Copper, in its many versatile forms, has become part of everyday life

and is present everywhere, forming an integral part of our environ-ment. Objects made of copper are beautiful and practical, harmonis-ing with the old and the new.

It is a fac that in the last third of the 19th century the exensive archi-tectural use of copper coincided with the period when Budapest devel-oped into a large city. This was when copper began to play a decisive

role in the architecture here.

This flourishing period in the application of copper fell into decline inthe past decades due to changes in history, certain restrictions and ageneral feeling of apathy regarding the architecture of the city.

Today, however, copper is once again enjoying a great boom, as can

be seen throughout Budapest on the refurbished roofs, ornate facadesof shops and buildings, the beautiful tradesigns, and the skilfully craft-ed interiors.

This album hopes to give an impression of the flourishing popularityof copper and its conquest of Budapest.

One of the most important architectural uses

of copper is for covering roofs. Copper plays a

major role in architecture because of its excellent

flexible, durable and aesthetic qualities. The Buda

Palace is sure to feature on at least one of the pho-

tographs taken by visitors to Budapset. The Palace

could be regarded as an ideal example of the tradi-

tional use of copper in Hungary. A panorama of thetown will reveal a multitude of roofs, steeples and

domes covered with copper, some new and some

already showing the patina of age. Some are sim-

ple, some very ornate but all have a similar striking

effect.

When approaching a building the doorwaysand windows are the first to catch the eye. The cen-tre of Budapest is full of beautiful examples.

From a distance we are impressed by the propor-

tions and size of a building, but as we draw nearer,

the details become more noticeable.

A beautifully constructed portal and elegantly

designed shop window entice the visitor to enter.

The prominent parts of such buildings are often

made of, or covered with copper. This tradition of

intricate relief work, ornate doors and artistic archi-

tectural portals goes back many centuries.

ful application of brass.

In the interiors of buildings brass is again verymuch in evidence. Architects and interior designersof the past and the present day have chosen to use

this metal. Brass grills, railings, lamps, furniture,

doors and numerous other objects decorate the

interiors of hotels, banks, elegant offices and
