The fascination of space for citizens and the importance of the space sector for Europe are today widely acknowledged. Space-based systems and their applications play an undisputed role in modern society, through the increasing number of services which they provide in the areas of navigation, telecommunications and Earth observation, through their contribution to Europe’s sectorial policies, such as climate change, agriculture or security, and even via the many possibilities for entrepreneurship and technology transfer.

INTRODUCTION BY FCT PRESIDENT

Acknowledging the increasingly global impact of space programmes, Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) proudly supported the Portuguese Technology Transfer Initiative (PTTI). This pioneering initiative, led by Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN), marked a new stage in the development of the space sector in Portugal, by boosting synergies between the space sector and others, such as aeronautics, the automotive or health sectors.

It is thus a great pleasure to write a preface for this catalogue, which highlights the success cases supported by the initiative. It is an important tool in raising awareness of the impact of these projects in a range of areas, and of the potential of the space sector in general.

It is FCT’s firm intention to keep supporting ambitious initiatives of space technology transfer, which are essential instruments to promote innovation and entrepreneurship in the space sector and also contribute to increasing the impact of public investment in the economy and in society.

Today we acknowledge the success of PTTI in the launch of the first ESA Space Business Incubation Center (BIC) in Portugal, which will create even more opportunities for entrepreneurs wanting to take advantage of the potential of space solutions applied to terrestrial applications.

Finally, I would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those stakeholders who contribute to the success of the space sector in Portugal, and in particular IPN, for leading these very successful initiatives in space innovation, in the year that ESA and Europe are celebrating the 50th anniversary of European Cooperation in Space.

Miguel Seabra

Page 7: PTTI project – National Technology Transfer Initiative in Portugal

It is a privilege for Instituto Pedro Nunes (IPN) to manage and implement the Portuguese Technology Transfer in Portugal (PTTI) in collaboration with the European Space Agency (ESA) and Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT). The initiative was launched in October 2012 and by the end of 2014 it will have boosted the transfer of existing space technologies to non-space markets, achieved by several companies and R&D institutions working in the Portuguese space sector. The implementation of the PTTI was made through the publication of a permanent open call for Feasibility Studies and Demonstrators and the distribution of funding, after thorough evaluation by a reputed Steering Committee.

IPN is pleased to have partnered with ESA and FCT in such initiative that expands the growth prospects of entities in multiple regions of Portugal and that sponsors projects that materialize ESA’s mission to give novel uses to space technology and competencies. Besides supporting promising business opportunities for the funded entities, the PTTI contributed to increase the visibility of the wider Portuguese space industry and academia and called the attention to their ability to further generate economic activity through the creation of new spin-offs, start-ups and highly skilled jobs.

NOTE BY IPN PRESIDENT

As a technology transfer organization from the University of Coimbra, IPN acts as a strong link between academia and the business sector and develops its work through R&TD activities in partnership with enterprises, specialized training and tech business incubation. These put IPN in a good position to act as a global broker for the Portuguese space sector. As a member of ESA’s Technology Transfer Network (TTN), IPN promotes the best and most promising Portuguese space technologies and competencies, fostering new commercial ventures and expanding the market outreach of the Portuguese space industry and academia.

Finally, we would like to take the opportunity to thank all the Portuguese space players for their feedback and committed participation in the PTTI and to thank ESA and FCT for trusting us with this initiative. In fact, the PTTI has prepared the ground for further expanding IPN’s technology transfer mission, namely through the future implementation of an ESA Business Incubation Centre (BIC) and Ambassador Platform in Portugal, to which we look forward.

Page 9: PTTI project – National Technology Transfer Initiative in Portugal

SPACE TECHNOLOGYAeroflex are synthetic, porous, ultralight materials offering exceptional properties suitable for highly performing insulation applications.Aeroflex thermal conductivity, along with other tailorable properties, presents exceptional advantages for space applications where thermal insulation is critical, namely in launchers, entry probes, landers, rovers, and balloons. Aeroflex materials are particularly suitable to provide thermal protection in harsh planetary environments.

SPACE HERITAGEIn the last two decades Aerogels have drawn much attention due to their special properties, namely density and thermal insulation. For this reason, aerogels are currently being used on-board Mars rovers (from Sojourner to Curiosity) providing thermal insulation for components, and are being considered for future missions as well. Aerogel is also being used on the International Space Station (ISS), on the MEDET experiment, in this case with the purpose to capture micrometeoroid and debris particles. With a similar application Aerogel was used in the Stardust Sample Collection (SSC) to trap micro particles, since aerogels can decelerate high velocity particles without totally vaporising them. Additionally, space agencies are considering to apply high-surface-area aerogels to protect astronauts against extreme conditions.

APPLICATION TO THE PIPELINE INSULATION MARKETThe most valuable pipelines are those transporting crude oil and refined petroleum. High quality, safe and long lasting insulation materials are required, capable of sustaining harsh outdoor environments, and of serving multiple purposes. On the other hand, cryogenic lines require high performance insulation in order to keep maximum efficiency. Aeroflex has very low density and thermal conductivity providing better thermal insulation with lower thickness and weight. Furthermore, the material is non-flammable and fire resistant, essential for pipelines carrying flammable substances, and its hydrophobicity provides corrosion resistance.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESAeroflex is presented in a flexible blanket format, which can be shaped to the desired format. Its mechanical properties show no noticeable modification in the temperature range from – 180 to 350ºC.Active Aerogels’ production technology is based on a lowcost drying process, and due to the chemical affinity between the fibres and the bulk material, Aeroflex presents low particle shedding.

THE SPACE TECHNOLOGY

SPACE TECHNOLOGYAerogel is an ultralight material with outstanding properties such as very low thermal conductivity, high porosity and high specific surface area. Such unusual properties, especially the combination of the low density and the highly performing insulation, make them very attractive and competitive for space applications. In this field, aerogels could be applied in launchers, balloons, rovers, entry probes or even in harsh planetary environments like a thermal protector.

SPACE HERITAGEDue to the special properties of aerogels such as density, thermal conductivity and porosity, aerogels have been used in some important space applications. As a thermal insulator aerogels are currently being used on-board Mars rovers (from Sojourner to Curiosity). Since aerogels can decelerate high velocity particles without totally vaporising them, they are also being used on the International Space Station (ISS), on the MEDET experiment so as to capture micrometeoroid and debris particles.

THE NON-SPACE MARKET

APPLICATION TO THE ENVIRONMENTAL REMEDIATION MARKET Environmental pollution by organic compounds, in particular by hydrocarbons, means significant health risks to humans and biota. The growing contamination levels and the governments concern which have implemented more stringent regulation in this field, demand the search for cost-effective and efficient methods to remove pollutants. In particular, events such as the 2010 BP oil spill when 200 million gallons of crude oil was pumped into the Gulf of Mexico for a total of 87 days, call for new and efficient cleaning technologies.Among the technologies available to minimize the pollution caused by hydrocarbons, the sorption process is considered one of the most promising approaches since they facilitate the process given their high uptake rate.Aerogels due to their unique properties can represent a unique approach as advanced adsorption materials with high sorption capacity and selectivity, good recyclability as well as affordable and environmentally friendly.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES Aerogels have properties such as high surface area (> 500 m2 g-1), high porosity (<98%) and hydrophobicity which make them a simple and more efficient alternative as adsorbent of pollutants than the commonly used activated carbon. Furthermore, aerogels can be re-used as adsorbents in several adsorption/desorption cycles, overcoming the disadvantages of activated carbon such as slow kinetics and limited removal capacity.

Page 13: PTTI project – National Technology Transfer Initiative in Portugal

SPACE TECHNOLOGYSpace systems require very high levels of reliability and availability. Fault Injection is the reference technology used to test space embedded systems; it is the most effective method for stress testing embedded systems beyond nominal operation. The goal is to ensure that the system has built-in fault-tolerance mechanisms which work as expected, ensuring it can respond appropriately to unusual or exceptional events.

SPACE HERITAGEFault Injection has been used by CRITICAL Software for robustness testing in the following ESA missions/projects:– Herschel/Planck application software and operating system validation;– Sentinel-1 operating system and run time environment validation;– Free/open-source real-time, executive for on-board space applications;– Remote Exploration Experiment for validating the cluster of computers on-board the spacecraft.Other non-ESA customers: NASA, CASC and JAXA and Chinese Telecom and Avionics institutions.

APPLICATION TO THE AUTOMOTIVE SECTORRobustness of embedded systems in the automotive market is of paramount importance. It affects the perceived quality of cars for end-users, it impacts safety, and it can have significant financial impacts if car (or system) recalls are necessary.CRITICAL Software’s Fault Injection technology is now part of an integrated system testing solution, which includes Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) and Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) capabilities. It is a state-of-the-art solution whose added-value is the inclusion of robustness testing through Fault Injection, and whose goal is to effectively test and qualify embedded automotive systems according to ISO 26262.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESThe technology is the most effective way of performing robustness testing on embedded systems. It is particularly useful when testing and validating complex systems, and also the interactions between several systems in a car. Typical usage scenarios are in testing complex Electronic Control Units (ECU) like an engine control unit, or an electronic stability program and/or ABS control unit. Technically advantages include the possibility to inject faults and monitor the activation of errors and their impact on the target system, without intrusiveness on the software level, or at the target hardware level. The goal is to evaluate the target system under realistic conditions, and to feedback information into the development process of the ECU in order to avoid serious or undesirable behaviour in the end product.

SPACE TECHNOLOGYGPS satellite navigation technology has been a powerful enabler of new products/applications and drivers of productivity gains in many economic activities. With the advent of Galileo, the possibilities will greatly increase. GPS and Galileo, more generally termed GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) consist in a constellation of orbiting satellites that constantly transmit radio signals. Such signals are then captured by user receiver terminals, allowing the user to determine its position and time.

SPACE HERITAGEOver the past years, as a result of its research and development efforts, DEIMOS has developed a GNSS Galileo user receiver that explores the Galileo AltBOC modulation for new applications. The receiver acquires radio signals transmitted by the satellite constellation for navigation purposes, thus it is considered a space-based technology.

APPLICATION TO THE UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES (UAV) MARKETNavigation of UAVs in harsh GNSS environments such as close to trees, buildings and other tall objects contaminates the navigation solution. This substantially complicates an accurate and precise UAV positioning required for certain critical applications such as aerial inspection (building structures, windpower generators, high voltage electric towers). The GNSS receiver based on AltBOC modulation and respective code measurements contribute in enabling navigation under these harsh scenarios, providing increased confidence in the UAV pilot and also end user.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES Technical Advantages: The receiver explores Galileo AltBOC modulation, which has an unparalleled (when compared to GPS) intrinsic characteristic of ultra-low noise and multipath robust code observables (distance from satellite to receiver), in contrast to Carrier phase observables (distance from satellite to receiver which is more accurate but is ambiguous), which are prone to discontinuities (so called cycle-slips) and even loss of lock, especially in urban environments.Business Advantages: The receiver provides a differentiation factor and enables new applications with growth potential such as aerial inspection based on UAVs.

SPACE TECHNOLOGYGPS satellite navigation technology has been a powerful enabler of new products/applications and drivers of productivity gains in many economic activities. GPS and Galileo, more generally termed GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite Systems) consist in a constellation of orbiting satellites that constantly transmit radio signals. Such signals are then captured by user receiver terminals, allowing the user to determine its position and time.

SPACE HERITAGEOver the past years DEIMOS has been developing an innovative GPS and Galileo receiver. The receiver version is already in commercialisation for R&D and education proposes and it has been used in several research projects to demonstrate Galileo new features with live field trials, including GNSS-Reflectometry, that is, the use of GNSS reflected signals on the water surface and its comparison with direct signals. Results achieved with DEIMOS GNSS-R prototype sensor, which uses DEIMOS receiver, under project SARGO (QREN SI-IDT) clearly point to improved water height altimetry using Galileo.

THE NON-SPACE MARKET

APPLICATION TO THE OCEAN AND INLAND WATERS MARKETS The installation and maintenance of water level measurement devices involves technical challenges and non-negligible costs. Measurement devices have to be in contact or very close to the water, so the number of potential measurements per site is greatly reduced. Additionally, the harsh environment where these sensors operate (e.g buoys, pressure sensors) require periodic maintenance at high costs and frequent loss of equipment during rigorous winters or under extreme natural events, ultimately leading to large down times and extra costs. The current efforts made worldwide to upgrade water level sensor networks comprising several thousand sensors with new and more accurate technologies such as RADAR, unfortunately suffer from the same operational drawbacks. This feasibility study characterizes the market potential of the GNSS-R based water measurement sensors that use Galileo and assess the business viability of GNSS-R sensors for ocean and inland waters, a non-space market and ultimately to support the decision of future investment in the maturation and wide deployment of GNSS-R technology.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES GNSS-R for water level measurements is considered an unexplored business opportunity a novel technique for remote sensing the water surface. Similar to RADAR, it follows a Remote Sensing approach, and is therefore not in direct contact with the water, thus requiring low maintenance. In contrast to radar and other technologies, however, it does not require deployment directly above the water surface, since a GNSS-R device can be mounted on the shore next to the water surface, even hundreds of meters away from ocean waves and its deleterious effect on the equipment. GNSS-R allows:– Lower installation and maintenance costs, comparable to RADAR and acoustic sensors and significantly better than float and pressure sensors;– Ease of operation, comparable to RADAR and acoustic sensors and significantly better than float and pressure;– High resilience to adverse sea conditions, better than RADAR and acoustic sensors which needs to be installed above the water and significantly better than float and pressure sensors;– Ability to take measurements where RADAR cannot be in-stalled, such as in cliffs and other locations of difficult access;

SPACE TECHNOLOGYThe Space technology that is in the basis of RMOP includes Hardware and Software on Flight Payload Development, namely for Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) as gateway data handling platforms. These include: On Board SW over RTOS,Data Handling & Processing – RadHard LEON3FT CPU, Power Distribution – RadHard, LCLs, ON/OFF, Load mon-itoring, System Integration – Engineering analysis & inte-gration, Payload System – Baseline for experiments or simplified payloads.

SPACE HERITAGEThe actual development of these competencies is mature and is based on what was made for the TDP8 Payload for Alphasat Satellite and AOLTB Project. The objective is the same – develop a gateway of acquisition and data processingthat makes a separation between the main platform and the non critical parties. In this case it will be a railway platform.

APPLICATION TO THE RAILWAY MARKET The railway market has a very difficult entry mode for out-side companies due to the fear in the lack of reliability in the interference of outside parties in the train. Any entity wanting to make a product, involving on-board systems, have to ensure that the solutions do not have negative impact nor interact with the critical systems. In this case, the interaction would be only through Evoleo platform and, through it, to the railway operator. The system provides improvements to actual solutions in terms of modularity, being a plug & play off the shelf equipment, with mechan-ical robustness and low power consumption allied to relia-bility and security.

EVOLEO is a SME holding a multidisciplinary engineering team investing in skills related to the design of critical andcomplex electronic systems, embracing five areas of activity:Space, Transportation, Energy, Industry and Health.EVOLEO searches and promotes partnerships and networking with centers of knowledge and industry players, in line with its mission of providing high-end and differentiated electronic engineering solutions, seeking continuous improvement, flexibility, quality and customer oriented innovation. We aim international recognition as a technological company for leveraging partnerships, added value enhancement and sustainable growth.

THE SPACE TECHNOLOGY

THE NON-SPACE MARKET

ABOUT EVOLEO TECHNOLOGIES

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES The business opportunity lies in the leverage of the development of new subsystems and on-board technologies, by having a single interfacing platform, the proposed Evoleo one.– For maintenance companies like EMEF, it means life easier with a new subsystem to be installed, with less time for approval, fewer interfaces, less maintenance training and time spent. Evoleo platform can be chosen as the one for the addition of new systems and for any on-board maintenance required (e.g. vibrations, loads, failures monitoring, testing).– For the 3rd party developers, it becomes an opportunity to easier develop, install and sell subsystems to trains. No need to pass costly and time consuming requirements constrains.– Ultimately, as long term goal, the train manufacturers could also adopt the same platform built-in to their products.

THE SPACE TECHNOLOGY

SPACE TECHNOLOGYThe effort placed in active antenna array (AAA) development for space applications was strongly increased in recent years due to the appearance of Gallium Nitride (GaN) transistor technology. The combination of these two technologies is a key factor that will allow in a near future to replace the bulky traveling wave tube amplifiers (TWTA).

SPACE HERITAGEThe concept of AAA for space applications is not yet completely widespread, but the technology is being considered and it is used in current ongoing space projects, where the concepts are continuously being optimized. The obtained results of these projects are extremely valuable and can be used, with simple adaptations, in other segments.

THE NON-SPACE MARKET

APPLICATION TO THE MARKET FOR UAV FOR CIVIL APPLICATIONSCurrently, the size of unmanned air vehicles (UAV) for civil applications, strongly limits the possible applications, due to cost constraints. In addition, the size limits the on-board allowed equipment that is used for radio communications with the ground station. As a consequence, the data rate that is currently achieved is low, not allowing high quality video, for instance. The possibility to include AAA in the UAV and/or in the ground station will optimize the energy exchange between the two, increasing the radiated power, minimizing the energy wasted and allowing improved communications with the same battery size.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESTechnologically, since the proposed technology provides significant gains in communication efficiency over the existing one, the gains are evident. From the business perspective, the UAV applications can be translated in new services (eg. video recording with improved quality) will be possible or improving the existing ones (eg. longer flight times). In either way, both the UAV manufacturers and the end users will collect benefits.

SPACE TECHNOLOGYGMV has developed a relevant technology related to the autonomous identification of space vehicles inertia charac-teristics (MCI) for improving the vehicle control capabilities and performances. This technology, based on processing inertial measurements already available on-board, allows the estimation of space vehicles mass, centre of mass position and inertia during the flight.

APPLICATION TO THE AUTOMOTIVE MARKET The automotive sector represents a very appealing areafor spinning off this technology. The opportunity of determining the real masses within a vehicle and their distribution could be useful embedded in cars to improve their stability on all those vehicles equipped with dynamic suspension systems. Also relevant is the application to the High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV). In this case the system can be effectively used to identify the number of occupants in a car and habilitate the use of dedicated lane in highways or bridges. Moreover the information concerning the occupantcan be also used for all those system concerning with automatic tolling depending on the number of occupants. The target market for HOV is of about more 1.5 millions of cars in Europe and, among them, 80000 in Portugal that could implement this technology.

GMV is a privately owned technological business group with an international presence. Founded in 1984, GMV offers its solutions, services and products in very diversesectors: Aeronautics, Banking and Finances, Space, Defense,Health, Security, Transportation, Telecommunications, and Information Technology for Public Administration and large corporations.

THE SPACE TECHNOLOGY

SPACE TECHNOLOGYFor more than 15 years GMV has developed relevant technology on On-board software (OBSW), Integrated Modular Avionics (IMA), Real-Time Operating Systems (RTOS), Time and Space Partitioning (TSP) Software. Based on this experience, GMV has developed a Time and Space Partitioned Real-Time Operating System that has been used in Space projects mainly for ESA, e.g. IMA4Space and MultIMA.

SPACE HERITAGEThe AIR operating system had a fundamental role in the definition of ESA IMA for Space architecture. As an operating system created for space applications, AIR has been optimized to support robust partitioning for systems of much smaller size than aircrafts. Most of AIR provided characteristics are desirable to Unmanned Vehicles (UV) platforms. Following this reasoning, it is expected that the benefits brought by IMA to space platforms can also be transposed to unmanned vehicle platforms. Allying with the GMV knowledge on Earth Observation technologies used in precision agriculture (PA), AIR is being applied to UV for PA.

THE NON-SPACE MARKET

APPLICATION TO THE PRECISION AGRICULTURE MARKET Using the flexibility of a UV with AIR4ARM the outcomes of this study can be applied in conjunction with the platforms that GMV already has in place to support precision agriculture. The application of UVs in PA will not only improve the usefulness of the information acquired by improving data granularity but it will also allow the management of aspects that would be impossible by using satellite images only.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGES The AIR4ARM study stands as a first step to create one relevant solution to improve the accuracy of management not only on the point of view of land usage but mainly in pest control. Automating the monitoring of crops with UVs will allow better human resource management, improved pest control, fungicide usage optimization, water regulation and in consequence, better quality and greater quantity of crops.

SPACE TECHNOLOGYStructural Health Monitoring (SHM) methods have been developed to deliver structural health information that supports decision making actions in terms of maintenance, logistics, mission planning, systems qualification, thus ensuring high levels of safety, and also lowering costs. SHM systems have been developed and deployed in space-craft components: spacecraft panels, composite overwrappedpressure vessels, supporting ground structures, and ther-mal protection systems. The electromechanical impedance(EMI), technique is an established method for SHM of structural components.

SPACE HERITAGEThe development of SHM systems at NASA were triggered in 2003 after the accident of the space shuttle Columbia. SHM technologies have been developed in order to facilitatefrequent inspections of critical components for structural damage. These components include launch vehicles, fuel tanks, crew habitats and other components. The develop-ment of EMI techniques for space applications had been also investigated in a programme initiated in 2004 for SpaceQualified Non-Destructive Evaluation & Health Monitoring system to detect cracks, corrosion, disbonds and cracks under bolts for a stiffened panel. The Phase II of the programmatured significantly and aligned the development of this system with the needs of NASA, reaching TRL 5 at the end of Phase II.

APPLICATION TO THE RENEWABLE ENERGY MARKETUnder normal operation schedules, wind turbines (WTs) have an average annual maintenance expenditure of around2% of the original wind turbine investment. However, unpredictable failure of certain WT components (such as, turbine blades, tower, gearbox, generator, braking system, yaw system, etc.) can lead to substantially higher maintenance costs and reduced availability. To increase the competitiveness of wind energy in comparison to other power generation technologies, significant and measurable improvements in the availability, reliability and lifetime of WT need to be achieved in the foreseeable future, where the monitoring and inspection technologies play a crucial role. From the operational point of view, a weak point wasidentified regarding the inspection and monitoring of thebolted joints. These elements are critical and an improvementin the existing methodologies was identified.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESThis approach will lead to an important reduction of theinspection time and associated costs. The proposed EMItechnique has also the capability of continuously monitoring the wind blades, preventing the detection of the defects only in an advanced stage of growing that causes an increment on the associated repairing costs and time, and a considerable reduction of the availability of WT. This EMI technique will also be applicable to the structural monitoring of the bolted joint in the base of the tower, as well along the overall structure for the case of towers in the joint between the different shells.

ISQ is a privately owned and independently run technological entity with a consolidated turnover (ISQ group) that surpassed 87 million Euros in 2012 (57% overseas). For the energy production industry ISQ already developed specific inspection techniques for wind generation towers, cryogenic tanks, or NDI qualification methods for clients such as Martifer, Enagás and International scientific organisations such as ITER. ISQ is delivering services for the space industry, such as testing services, in several development projects, and has permanent activities at the European Space Center in Kourou since 2003.

SPACE TECHNOLOGY LusoSpace’s incursion on the field of Augmented Reality started with ESA’s activity “Auxiliary Direct Visualisation of Information Tools for Space Application”, from 2004 to 2006. This was a study of direct visualization display system tech-nologies (Head Mounted or Head-Up displays) and in the identification of their applications for the support of astro-nauts during EVAs (Extra Vehicular Activities). At the end of the activity a baseline design was proposed.

SPACE HERITAGESo far LusoSpace has been or is involved in a total of 30 ESA or Augmented Reality activities, such as Navigation (21 magnetometers contracted), Photonics (Optical Ground Support, LIDAR, Lasers sources and amplifiers, Optical communications) and Augmented Reality (development of a totally disruptive solution called a Lisplay (a lens and display combined) to be used in HMD that could ultimately be as light and comfortable as today’s sunglasses (2 patents pending).

APPLICATION TO THE LOGISTICS MARKETHead Mounted Displays (HMD) and Augmented Reality (AR) will change Logistics. Although several processes and therefore several applications are excellent candidates for the use of AR in a warehouse operation the study focused on one very labour intensive task in which potential customers believe the benefits will impact the most: Picking (retrieval of goods (usually manually) from the various warehouse positions to a “central” dispatching location). The proposed solution will allow for a hands-free vision guided operation with validation and interface tools that will allow for a sound increase in productivity. This productivity increase is most valued in countries were labour costs are higher giving this solution a very relevant internationalization factor.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESConsidering that 92% of the warehouse management systems still use handheld barcode scanners or even lists on paper, the mere fact that the AR solution is hands-freewill have a huge impact on these operations. Other advantages of the system are navigation (advising the user of optimized routes inside the warehouse), validation (a camera on the glasses will validate the items picked “on the fly” reducing the time necessary for validation or, in its absence, picking errors) and a haptic interface (natural gestural online real-time interface with the central warehouse management system).

LusoSpace is a privately held company founded in 2002 active in the areas of HMD (Head Mounted Displays) and Augmented Reality Applications, MEMS (Micro Electro-Mechanical Systems) and Highly complex and critical Systems (space applications are an example). Due to the increasing envelope of the Augmented Reality area and also to the work done under Feasibility Study LusoSpace has decided to take a step towards its Vision and created its first spin-off LusoVu, devoted specifically to Augmented Reality solutions.

THE SPACE TECHNOLOGY

SPACE COMPETENCIESSpace weather forecast, compared to weather forecast, is in its infancy. Space Agencies have been investing in space weather assets mostly from a space-borne perspective, yet there’s a lot of research activity that combines space-acquired and earth-acquired data. Most of these projects use data coming from solar space missions as SOHO, SDO, IRIS, STEREO or instruments in ground such as spectro-heliographers and magnetometers. The team behind this project has experience at data usage level with SOHO, HIPPARCOS, COROT, GAIA, MarsExpress and SWARM.

SPACE HERITAGEPresent Technologies have been working close with Geophysical and Astronomical Observatory of the University of Coimbra in exploitation of the 80+ year old solar pictures archive (spectro-heliographs) and its high-precision magnetometer (100+ year old).

THE NON-SPACE MARKET

APPLICATION TO THE AVIATION AND AIR NAVIGATION MARKETSSpace weather concerns variations in the Sun, solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere, and thermosphere, which can influence the performance and reliability of a variety of space-borne and ground-based technological systems and can also endanger human health and safety. When a space weather event occurs, a wide range of effects can result, with many impacts in aviation, both In Flight and On Ground. Our project has two main goals: 1) study the feasibility of a solar risk service for air aviation and air navigation. 2) study the feasibility of collecting data anomalies of GNSS receivers from professionals and scientists and also from smartphones (crowdsourcing) to validate and correlate it with solar forecast and magnetometer data.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESThere are only two commercial providers of space weather services (both operating from the USA). Usage of co-located magnetometer and spectrum-heliographers combined with data fusion with Swarm products are key competitive advantages of our project. Furthermore there is no usage of user generated content on competing products in this market. For local effects monitoring and local modelling we do believe that crowdsourcing of GNSS errors through an app based simple interface will be a key competitive advantage over “institutional data only” approaches.

INTELLIGENT LANDING

Page 35: PTTI project – National Technology Transfer Initiative in Portugal

SPACE TECHNOLOGYUNINOVA developed an intelligent and optimized algorithm – denoted IPSIS (Intelligent Planetary SIte Selection) - to tackle the problem of selecting the safest site for spacecraft landing, essential for Space exploration missions to maxim-ise mission success. This algorithm provides HDA (Hazard Detection and Avoidance) capabilities, using hazard maps such as texture, slope, illumination etc. as decision criteria to provide landing site selection.

SPACE HERITAGEThe IPSIS algorithm is based on a conceptual mathemati-cal model, which combines multi-criteria decision making concepts with evolutionary optimization algorithms, thus providing a novel, robust and efficient approach to the prob-lematic of safe-landing with hazard avoidance. IPSIS has been tried-and-tested within the space domain in the con-text of two ESA projects.

APPLICATION TO THE UNMANNED AERIAL VEHICLES (UAV) MARKETDeveloped in partnership with a Portuguese company called Spin.Works, specialized in the development of UAV’s with embedded guidance, navigation and control systems, the ILUV project is a step forward in achieving an autonomous aerial vehicle. In situations of emergency landing caused by motor or battery failure, IPSIS can be used to select a safe landing site, minimizing the risk to people and property, and maximizing the chances of safely recovering the aircraft.

COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGESThe use of UAV’s by civil users benefits from increased safety, security and efficiency. The use of IPSIS technology provides added value to current UAV’s by providing autonomous and safe landing capabilities, bringing increased confidence in (semi)autonomous aerial vehicles.By providing this extra level of autonomy, in particular at the landing phase, it is possible to achieve a reduction in operational costs, since the most significant cost in micro UAV operations is the operator cost.

UNINOVA (Institute for Development of New Technologies) is a private multidisciplinary, non-profit research institute located in the campus of Universidade Nova Lisboa. The research group responsible for the ILUV project is the CA3 – Computational Intelligence Research Group. CA3 was formed in 1996 and in 2000 it was integrated in the Centre of Technologies and Systems (CTS) of Uninova. The group joins together researchers with interests in the areas of Computational Intelligence, Intelligent Decision Systems and Intelligent Image Processing. Application projects are focused on: AeroSpace, Biomedicine and Environment.
