 ACKNOWLEDGEMENT & INTRODUCTION 

  This project consists of 3 components, which are making up a video clip by incorporating the concepts learned in class, written report of the clip, and presenting the clip to the class. This project allows us to recognize and identify the connections among concepts and perspectives within psychology and with other disciplines. This project allows us to engage in psychological inquiry and become self­regulated learners.   We are asked to undertake a Literature Review. This should include ­ although not limited to ­ the exploration of significant texts, and current trends and practice.   Driven by an iterative process of analysis, reflection and evaluation of our conceptual analysis, the report should demonstrate the development of our thinking throughout this unit. Our argument should provide hypotheses, concepts or project ideas for implementation.   We need to set our own professional goals and targets, including strategies and methods, details about timelines and resources, and methods of evaluating our achievements.  In this assignment , we are making a stories about a lesson that learned by a teacher.   “Don't judge a book by its cover”  Siti Nur Fatahiah ­ Teacher Pe Zhi Yong  ­ Student Yong Man Kit  ­ Class Monitor  Mohamad Adib Ismail  ­ Student Lim Jey Shen ­ Student

RESEARCHED ESSAY  

  In this storyline, 5 concepts of social psychology is found, which are the Halo Effect, Classical Conditioning, Persuasive Message, Unrealistic Optimism, and Counterfactual Thinking.      SCENE 1, the first concept that we have learnt is classical conditioning. For example, when Ms Siti walks into the class and is automatically greeted by the students. Next, the second concept that we have learnt in this storyline is halo effect, which occurs when Ms Siti judges a person’s personality based on first impression. For example, when she sees Jason, who is a new student that casually walks into the class late, without acknowledging the teacher on the first day of class. When Ms Siti looks at Jason’s appearances (dirty clothes and weird hairstyle), she judges Jason as a bad student. She then asks Jason to stand in the corner as punishment. However, Yong was also late to class. With tidy clothes and neat hairstyle with good attitude, she judges that Yong is a good student. Ms Siti allows Yong to sit down without being punished. Jason feels unhappy at Ms Siti with her unfair treatment. It is not a good behaviour to judge a person‘s personality based on appearances.    SCENE 2, the classical conditioning is occurred repeatedly when the school bell rings. During class, everyone starts falling asleep due to boredom. However, when the bell starts ringing, all the students start packing up their things and head out without the teacher’s permission. Ms Siti informs everyone to prepare for their small test on next Monday.     SCENE 3, the third concept of social psychology found was when students are having their free time at the library, which is where persuasive message occurred .For example, Yong and Adib persuaded Man Kit and Jason to not study for the test by telling them that the test is extremely easy. When Man Kit tells Yong to prepare for his test, Yong says he does not care about it and he believes that he can achieved an excellent grade without revision. This is also where the fourth concept is shown, which is unrealistic optimism,the tendency to imagine that our own outcomes are better than those of other people.

     SCENE 4, the last concept is counterfactual thinking ­ downward counterfactuals. It will cause us to imagine different outcomes for an event that has already occurred. Is usually associated with bad or negative events. It can be used to improve or worsen your mood. For example, when a disappointed Ms Siti gives back the test paper to Yong, he said “at least I didn't fail” on the test.     In conclusion, Ms Siti learns a new lesson, “Don't judge a book by its cover”. Do not judge an individual superficially based on first impression and making an opinion without knowing the individual’s character. In our story, students that are good or bad can not be judged by their physical appearances or first impression. There are more to a person than that.

 STORYLINE 

   

 SCENE 1  Venue: Classroom  

 On the first day of school, Ms Siti walked into the class and was greeted by the 

students. While she was taking attendance, Jason casually walked into the class late, without acknowledging the teacher. When Ms Siti looked at Jason’s appearances (dirty clothes and weird hairstyle), she immediately judged Jason as a bad student. She then asked Jason to stand in the corner as punishment. However, Yong was also late to class. With tidy clothes and neat hairstyle with good attitude, she judged that Yong is a good student. Ms Siti allowed Yong to sit down without being punished. Jason felt unhappy at Ms Siti as she treated him unfairly. 

    

SCENE 2  Venue: Classroom  

While Ms Siti was still teaching, the bell rang as it’s the end of the class. All the students started packing up their things and head out without the teacher’s permission. Ms Siti stopped and informed everyone to prepare for their small test on next Monday. She also stopped Jason from going out for awhile for punishment.

    SCENE 3  Venue: Library   

During their free time, the four of them decided to sit outside the library and do their own things. Yong started invited everyone to play Dota that night but Jason declined the invitation immediately. Man Kit also declined the invitation and asked everyone to study. However, both Adib and Yong started laughing and said that the exam is very easy in order to persuade Jason and Man Kit to play with them.     SCENE 4  Venue: Classroom   

During the exam, Ms Siti gave a friendly greeting to Yong by wishing him good luck, but not to Jason. After the result came out, Ms Siti was disappointed with the results because Yong got the worst grade in the class (Grade D). On the other hand, Jason got the best grade in the class (Grade A+), which surprised Ms Siti. When Ms Siti gave back the test paper to Yong, Yong whispered “at least I didn't fail” upon receiving his paper. After that day, Ms Siti learned a new lesson to never judge a book by its cover.

CONCEPTS INVOLVED  

 There are 5 concepts used in the video clip: the Halo Effect, Classical Conditioning, Persuasive Message, Unrealistic Optimism, and Counterfactual Thinking.    Halo Effect ­One positive attribute will cause us to attribute other positive qualities to an individual.  •  This also speaks to the importance of a good first impression  •  Can occur without our active awareness   Example: When Yong came late to class, the teacher judged his personality and attitude based on Yong’s appearance. This is because the teacher thought that since Yong wears nice clothings, therefore he must be a good student.    Classical Condition ­When 2 stimuli are paired together, they may come to elicit the same response. . Example: When the school bell rang, the students incognitively packed their bags, stood up and got ready to leave the class without the teacher’s approval, because they are used to leaving the class when the bell rings.     Persuasive Message Persuasion – attempts to influence others’ attitudes or behaviors  Example: Yong and Adib persuaded Man Kit and Jason to not study for the test by telling them that the test is extremely easy.

Unrealistic Optimism The tendency to imagine that our own outcomes are better than those of other people  Example: Yong thought that he can achieved an excellent result however he did not prepared his exam and revision before examination is coming soon.     Counterfactual Thinking ­ Downward Counterfactuals Imagining different outcomes for an event that has already occurred.  

● Is usually associated with bad or negative events ● Can be used to improve or worsen your mood 

 Example: When Yong got the worst score in the test, he tried to avoid the hard fact that he was lazy, which is an excuse.

CONCLUSION  

  The conclusion of our story is “do not a judge a book by its cover.”  

Do not judge an individual superficially based on first impression and making an opinion without knowing the individual’s character. In our story, students that are good or bad can not be judged by their physical appearances or first impression. There are more to a person than that.

SCENE 2  * Siti proceeds to teach *  School bell ringing !!! * Everyone starts packing fastly *  Siti : Wait! Before we end this class, I want to remind you all to prepare for your small test next week.  * Then everyone leaves… *    SCENE 3  The next morning .. * Everyone sit outside library and do their own thing. * Yong : Eh, tonight Dota want or not? Adib: On. Jason : Uhh, no. Man Kit : Study la, Dota for what. Adib: Just play Dota only la tonight. * Yong grunts * Yong: Ya la, what exam la.    SCENE 4  * Siti hands out exam papers to the students * Siti : Good luck, Yong! You can do well in test right? Yong : Thank you! * Siti acts as if she did not see Jason *  * After the result *
