greatest gratitude to Mr. Shankar our lecturer who introduced us to the

methodology of work as well as providing us guideline in completing this

assignment.

In addition to that, a grateful thank to each one our group

members who contributed a lot in making this assignment. We would

also like to acknowledge everyone’s effort and involvement because

without each other we would not be able to complete this project.

All in all, a huge gratitude to everyone involved in this

assignment directly or indirectly as we appreciate it all.

Procedure

1. Coming up with the concept and storyline: We held up a group

meeting to discuss our video format as we are given the choice of

either creating a short film or a social experiment both related to the

concept found in social psychology. Once that is decided we move on

to discussing the storyline and how the concept fits in the scenes.

Through a try an error process 5 concept is concluded as well as the

roles played by each members.

2. Shooting the video: Once the storyline is created, we set a day to

shoot all the footage for the short film. This is also when we decided

on where to shoot, what props to include and how it all plays out on

the video.Due to the fact that we chose to shoot in two venue,

another day is required to shoot the opposed scene.

3. Discussing on report work and video editing: After all the scenes were

taken, the task is then divided amongst each members. The following

video will also be edited based on the story plot.

4. Finishing the report, video and slides: At this point, each members

would do their part in which will be compiled into one report.

Plot

Darren was an architecture student at Taylor’s University. Most of the time he

skipped meeting and classes while his group member are all curios and annoyed by his

absentees. There was once, it was a group project and the members are all busy at the

studio except Darren. He was not in the studio helping out his group mates. So his group

mates texted him about his where about. After Darren saw the text messages sent by his

groupmates he came to the studio.

While he was at the studio, he was not helping the group mates which was busy

rushing their final project but he was playing with his smart phone. After a while, he notify

his groupmates that he needed to leave for some excuses so his groupmates agreed to it.

After he head home, immediately he went to his room at the same time he heard his parent

having an argument behind the door.

He felt heart broken and sorrowful that made him tears up in his room. Back then,

his parent always argue since Darren was young. At times, they argue right in front of Darren

and most of the time, His father choose to leave the situation and not solving the problem.

Darren picked up his attitude from his father that was why most of the time he

leave during difficult situation.

After a while calming down, he decided to play guitar which was what he love most. He

actually love playing guitar but he choose to study architecture which he does not have

much interest on.

CONCEPTS, DEFINITIONS & APPLICATION

Social loafing

Social loafing is the phenomenon of people exerting less effort to achieve a goal when they

work in a group than when they work alone. It can manifest itself in the form of the ‘free-

rider effect’ where some members do not put in their share of work under the assumption

that others' efforts will cover their shortfall.

Application:

As there is no peer assessment being done for this group assignment, Darren feels no

obligation to actively partake in completing the project. Furthermore, Darren feels that his

contribution to the group work will be of little significance, further encouraging him to slack

off and not help his fellow groupmates.

Basking in Reflected Glory (BIRGing)

Basking in Reflected Glory is a self-serving cognition whereby an individual associates

themselves with known successful others such that the winner's success becomes the

individual's own accomplishment. BIRG-ing means feeling successful through the successes

of one's circle and enhancing the self-esteem just by being in this group.

Application:

When it is found out that they achieved an A, Darren is more than happy to associate

himself with Meagan and Nadrah even though he does not necessarily deserve the A.

Despite not having contributed, Darren also sees the group’s success as an accomplishment

of his own just because he was a member of the group.

Counterfactual thinking

Counterfactual thinking is imagining different outcomes for an event that has already

occurred. It is usually associated with bad or negative events. There are upward and

downward counterfactuals that can be used to either improve or worsen an individual’s

mood.

Application:

Being confronted by Meagan and Nadrah, Darren says, “It’s not like you needed my help

anyways” and tries to reassure them that they still scored an A. Darren is implying to

Meagan and Nadrah that even though he didn’t contribute much to the group, at least he

showed up for presentation. He thinks to himself that even though he did not do much

work, he at least showed up – which is better than not showing up at all.

Observational Learning

Observational learning is the process of acquiring information by observing others. It is a

type of learning most associated with the work and social learning theory of psychologist

Albert Bandura. Observational learning is thought to be particularly important during

Page 10: Psychology Report

childhood. Observational learning can produce new behaviours, and either increase or

decrease the frequency with which a previously learned behaviour is demonstrated.

Application:

Being exposed to violence between his parents from a young age, Darren is conditioned to

dealing with conflict in a hostile manner, which is the cause of his short temper when being

confronted by Meagan and Nadrah. Darren’s father has the tendency to walk away from

conflict which is why Darren reacted in a similar manner and left the room.

Intrinsic Motivation

Intrinsic motivation is defined as performing an action or behaviour because you enjoy the

activity itself. Whereas acting on extrinsic motivation is done for the sake of some external

outcome, the inspiration for acting on intrinsic motivation can be found in the action itself.

Application:

Darren was forced to take architecture by his parents so he lacks the intrinsic motivation to

do his coursework. However, he has a passion for music so he gains joy from playing his

guitar.
