Once accepted and registered on the PDPL2 programme, final year trainees at WPF Therapy will be permitted to start the twice weekly clinical work by taking on one twice weekly training patient in addition to their postgraduate diploma caseload. This twice weekly training patient will not be from their current caseload. After qualification as Psychodynamic Psychotherapists, they will then take on a second twice weekly training patient and complete three terms of Theoretical seminars. Graduates who have already graduated with the Post Grad Diploma in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice or the Advanced Diploma will take on two twice weekly training patients plus the same three terms of theoretical and clinical seminars. (See below under Client work, Supervision and Seminars)

4. Personal Therapy

N.B. See Appendix 16 for the WPF Therapy Guidelines for Personal Therapy A candidate must be undergoing their own personal therapy with a WPF Therapy approved therapist, at least six months before the start date of registration on the programme. Personal therapy must be twice weekly during the period of registration on the L2 programme. Please also note that in accordance with BPC requirements, the training therapist must be a BPC registered Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. It is possible to have a discussion over the phone or applicants may arrange to have a confidential face to face consultation with the therapy adviser for a fee of £40. These consultations take place in his consulting rooms and the fee will be paid directly to the adviser. The Therapy Adviser’s name is available from the PDPL2 Training Administrator.

5. Client Work

Candidates must see two twice weekly training patients that are designated for the purpose of the Programme. NB: Final Year Post Graduate trainees applying to register on the L2 programme will take on only one twice weekly training patient until they graduate and the following year start with the second one. The first training patient cannot be from their current caseload. One patient will have to be seen for a minimum of 18 months and the second for a minimum of 12 months. Both training patients must be supervised once a week with a WPF Therapy approved supervisor. Both training patients will be supervised by the same supervisor. The supervision must be individual with time given to each patient as agreed between the supervisor and supervisee. Applicants must confirm with the Programme Manager that the supervisor they have selected is approved for the purposes of this Programme. Any other clients must be supervised separately Supervision must be continued until the Licence to Practice twice weekly has been granted.

INDEMNITY INSURANCE

We do not require you to have Professional Indemnity Insurance for clinical work carried out at WPF Therapy as it is covered by the WPF Therapy insurance. However you may wish to arrange your own indemnity insurance for your work at WPF Therapy as you do for all clients

in your own practice or in another setting.

6. Case Study

A Case Study (between 5,000 and 6,000 words) will have to be submitted and passed as part of the final portfolio. This will cover the work with one of the two training patients (Two copies of the case study must be submitted to the Programme Administrator). Candidates should allow 6 weeks for the Case Study to be marked. The Case Study will be an accurate representation of the work carried out and will be clearly structured in accordance with the criteria in Appendix 7. Case Studies are marked anonymously by a pool of markers. This will be an assessment independent of the training supervisor. A pass mark must be achieved in order to be granted the twice weekly licence.

7. Supervisors

Criteria for supervisors

Candidates who successfully register on the L2 programme will have to select their own training supervisor. He or she must be approved by the Programme Manager. In each case, the Supervisor must submit a CV and letter stating how they meet the criteria (Appendix 5) to the Programme Manager.

Page 7: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme...letter from WPF Therapy, you can contact the FPC office if you wish to arrange registration with BPC. 3 2. Contact Personnel The Programme,

6

All supervisors are required to self-certify as to the last three criteria for supervisors as set out in Appendix 5. NB: Supervisory hours undertaken before L2 programme registration and before confirmation that your proposed supervisor has been approved cannot be used for the purposes of fulfilling the L2 programme, requirements for supervised clinical work. Please note that for any reason a candidate registered on the programme has to change supervisors, he or she should write formally to the Programme manager giving the reasons for the change and requesting approval for a new supervisor. A report from previous and new supervisors will be required as part of the final portfolio. The criteria for supervisors are in Appendix 5.

7. Supervisor’s Reports

A first year Interim Supervisors report and a final Report will also have to be submitted as part of the portfolio. These reports will require the recommendation and agreement of the supervisor that the twice weekly licence be granted.

8. Theoretical Seminars

From October 2015, the theoretical Seminars will be an optional part of the programme. While the Licence to practise twice weekly will be granted without the requirement of attending the theoretical seminars, candidates holding the WPF Post Graduate Certificate in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice may opt to take part in the seminars if they wish to do so. N.B. External Candidates, however, who have APELed onto the PDPL2 are obliged to attend the theoretical seminars for three terms as one of the requirements to complete for the twice weekly licence to be granted. Theoretical seminars last for one academic year divided into three 10 -week terms. They will usually take place on Thursday afternoons. Some or all of these seminars may be shared with trainees on the Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy course. This will depend on numbers. A list of topics reading lists and papers will be sent to candidates who have decided to complete either one, two, or three terms of seminars. The seminars are paid for in addition to the annual registration fee for PDPL2. Trainees registered on the PDPL2 in their final year of the postgraduate diploma will only do the L2 clinical work until they qualify in once weekly Psychotherapy or equivalent. 80% attendance is required at each term of weekly seminars. Proof of attendance will need to be included in the final portfolio submission.

9. Client Assessment

Each candidate must conduct five assessments of clients and each assessment must be supervised by a supervisor approved by the Programme Manager. If you are using the WPF’ Therapy Clinical Services the following Guidelines should be followed:

a. You must first contact Caroline Shuttleworth, WPF Therapy Clinical Placement manager, to obtain a copy of the Guidelines and Policies of the Counselling Service.

b. Each assessment must be individually supervised by a WPF Therapy approved Assessment Supervisor. Candidates should select from the following list of Assessment Supervisors for Psychotherapy Trainees. Outside supervisors are not acceptable for this part of the portfolio requirement.

c. The assessment should be written up according to WPF Therapy ‘house’ procedures. d. You will see the assessment supervisor in their consulting room and pay their fee to

them directly. If your clients are not from WPF Therapy clinical services, you may submit the name of an assessment supervisor who will have to be approved by the Programme Manager. Supervisors who supervise the assessments have to fulfil certain criteria with regard to training and experience of conducting assessments. A satisfactory report from the supervisor for each assessment carried out for this

Programme must be submitted as part of the Portfolio. A Pro-forma for the submission of

client assessments is given (see Appendix 8). Candidates are advised that they may gain more from the client assessment requirement if they defer it until they have successfully completed the module

on Psychopathology.

Other Psychotherapy Supervisors can be considered if necessary.

10. Psychiatric Placement (strongly recommended)

This is not a requirement to be granted the Licence to practise twice weekly but we strongly advise that all candidates complete a six month placement. Candidates have to make their own arrangements for this placement but advice and help can be given by contacting the Programme Manager.

11. Infant Observation (Optional)

An optional infant or child observation seminar can also appropriately form part of the Portfolio plan for Professional Development. The infant observation seminar offered by WPF Therapy is acceptable for this module. Please contact the Training Department for further details and current availability of this seminar.

12. Tutorials

Programme participants are entitled to see a personal tutor if they wish to discuss any difficulties or problems. Twice yearly would be a reasonable guideline. Trainees on the programme should find their own tutor in the first term of registration using the 5 criteria for approved supervisors (see second part of Appendix 5) as a guideline. After finding a suitable tutor, their name should be given to the Programme Administrator and the tutor told that they should invoice WPF Therapy directly. Guidelines for tutorials are given in Appendix 9. Programme participants should aim to select a tutor that has knowledge of the programme, its aims and intentions and if they specifically wish academic tutoring for case study or essays, please contact the Programme Manager.

13. Programme Portfolio Submission

The Programme Portfolio must be submitted to the Programme Administrator. Candidates must allow 6 weeks for the Portfolio to be marked. On submission, it must contain the following documents:

(1) Statement of Personal Therapy. (2) Supervisor’s Final Report (including candidate’s log of clinical work).

(3) Reports of Supervised Client Assessments. (4) Case Study, Marker’s Written Report and Pass Mark. (5) Certificates of Satisfactory Attendance at Theoretical Seminars –(if appropriate).

Qualification & Graduation

Once your Portfolio has been accepted you will receive a letter indicating that you have been granted the licence to practice twice weekly, a copy of which simultaneously will be sent to FPC year’s graduates. You will automatically be sent an invite in the summer of the year you qualify. The licence to practice twice weekly gives you eligibility to register with BPC. Your letter granting you the licence will also be sent to FPC and they should be contacted for registration with BPC.

14. Appeals and Complaints

Copies of the London Training Department Appeals and Complaints procedures are available from the Training Office. A Programme candidate who has a complaint upheld against them or becomes subject to the investigation of a complaint by a professional body is obliged to report this to the Programme Manager. Such circumstances will not necessarily impinge on a candidate’s progress on the Programme; each case will be considered individually.

15. Trainees Association and Library Resource Centre

Candidates on the PDPL2 become members of the Trainees Association and also eligible to use the WPF Therapy Library resource. The fees of £8.00 and £25.00 respectively, are included in the annual Registration fee. The Association actively aims to improve services for trainees and to represent the interest of trainees to staff and FPC. To this end they have an elected representative on the Training Management Group and the Equal Opportunities Working Party. The chair of the Trainees Association also has regular meetings with the Senior Management in the Training Department. The Trainees Association holds regular open meetings for members, maintains the counsellors rooms and provides a photocopier for the exclusive use of the trainees. The Trainees Association can be contacted through the Training Office. Secondly, It should be noted that the current WPF Therapy book collection is available from the WPF Therapy building from where books can be borrowed. The library is staffed by volunteers during the day but there is a system for browsing the catalogue and reserving books on line. The books will then be left in the Trainee room and returned by the borrower. For details of this please, consult Jennifer Jones in the Training Office. 16. CRIMINAL RECORDS BUREAU CHECKS All PDPL2 trainees who see patients from the WPF Therapy clinic will need to obtain a certificate to confirm they have undergone an enhanced CRB check. If this has not already been done, forms are available from Jennifer Jones in the Training Office. She will be able to give information on the current fee.

Page 11: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme...letter from WPF Therapy, you can contact the FPC office if you wish to arrange registration with BPC. 3 2. Contact Personnel The Programme,

Those policies and practices will have particular reference to people’s class, culture, gender, marital status, physical ability, race, religion and sexual orientation.

WPF Therapy Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme Licence to Practise Twice Weekly (PDP L2)

Guidelines for Supervisors

The Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme. Background information The WPF Therapy Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice or equivalent forms the basis of the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme. This Post Graduate diploma to a qualification as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist licensed to practise once weekly. The qualification also results in eligibility to register with the BPC. However, some trainees wish to gain further experience in working more intensively at a frequency of twice weekly and so the PDP L2 programme was devised to be an additional one to two years after completion of the Post Graduate Diploma. The programme for the twice weekly licence consists of a further three terms of theoretical seminars, and around two years of individual twice weekly clinical work- the requirement for each candidate on the programme is to see one twice weekly patient for a minimum of 18 months and a second twice weekly patient for a minimum of 12 months.

The Structure of the initial course leading to the WPF Therapy Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice. The Postgraduate Diploma/MA in Psychodynamic Theory and Practice can be completed in four years. The Postgraduate Diploma/MA has both academic and clinical components and trainees usually begin working with WPF Therapy Clinic patients towards the end of their first year on the course. Most trainees beginning the course have also completed an introductory course in counselling skills and have also been encouraged to gain some experience in a voluntary agency before commencing training. The modes of training are as follows: Mode M is built on the same seminar and supervision structure but spread over four years, one day a week, running from 9.15 am to 5.45pm. Trainees are expected to build up to three patients a week seen once- weekly in year one and continue throughout the course with three patients.. Mode A runs on Thursdays 1.00pm to 7pm for two years and on Friday at the same time for the next two years. Trainees are expected to build up to three patients seen once-weekly in year one and continue with three patients throughout the course.

Registration on the PDP L2 (licence to practise twice weekly) programme before qualifying as Psychodynamic Psychotherapists Candidates in the final year of the Postgraduate Diploma/MA at WPF Therapy may begin to meet the clinical requirements of PDP L2 before they have qualified as once- weekly Psychodynamic Psychotherapists. This is dependent on the candidate’s supervisor from the previous year giving their approval that the candidate is ready to take on one additional twice weekly patient. This is in addition to their clinical caseload of once weekly patients. The extra individual once- weekly supervision in the final year enables current trainees to complete the Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme - Licence to Practise Twice Weekly within a year post qualification.

Private Practice or WPF Therapy clinic Candidates registered on the PDP L2 programme and in their final year of the postgraduate diploma are accountable for case-work management and the upkeep of files to WPF Therapy Clinic and Caroline Shuttleworth, as Clinical Placement Manager (020 7378 2006) is available to supervisors should they have any concerns about the candidate in training or the clients. The Managers will initially approach the trainee should any difficulties arise but WPF Therapy reserves the right to speak with supervisors if necessary.

After trainees have gained the Postgraduate Diploma in Psychodynamic Studies they may have set up in private practice and they may request that their twice weekly patient is transferred out. As the welfare of the patient will be considered the priority, this would require a recommendation from their supervisor and the agreement of the Clinical Services Manager. If supervisees bring clients from another agency it is advisable that they provide you with written permission to discuss the clients. Assessment & Graduation : Final Assessment on the PDP L2 is through the submission of a portfolio including documentation which demonstrates that meet the various requirements in the following areas; personal therapy, client work, clinical assessments, and a case study. A report from the Training Supervisor is an important part of the portfolio. Appendix 6 (Supervisor’s Final Report Form).

WPF Therapy PSYCHODYNAMIC PSYCHOTHERAPY PROGRAMME

Licence to Practise Twice Weekly (L2) Criteria for the writing and marking Case Study

The Case Study (5,000-6,000 words) should demonstrate that the candidate can present a case in such a way as to give a clear image of the client and the interaction with the client. The paper should be supported by relevant psychodynamic/psychoanalytic theory that shows the candidate’s way of working as a Psychodynamic Psychotherapist working twice weekly. To obtain a pass, candidates should fulfil the following objectives: 1. The candidate should select a focus and title to illustrate some of the central

issues arising from the case, making critical use of material they have read from mainstream psychoanalytic/psychodynamic sources. The focus that arises may represent something that has caught their interest but it must be of central importance in understanding and illuminating the case.

2. The candidate should present one case in which the client has been seen at a

frequency of twice weekly. The study should include the candidate’s part in the case i.e. some sample pieces of verbatim. This should be done ethically and appropriately.

3.. The candidate must show a process of thinking about the case material with

regard to the following: transference, counter transference, regression (if appropriate) and any clinical benefits and limitations of working at the chosen frequency of twice per week.

4.. The candidate should also demonstrate an ability to employ psychoanalytic

theory appropriately showing some critical awareness of the usefulness and limitations of that theory.

5... The case study should be written in strict accordance with the APA style of

referencing’ (See Appendix 15). It should have accurate use of citations in the text, and a list of references.

Marking for each of the above sections will be weighted as follows:

1. 20 2. 20

3. 25

4. 20 5. 15

Please note that at least a pass mark (50%) must be attained on each of the above

sections for the paper as a whole to pass. In the event of your not passing a section, the

marks will not be totalled but instead the marker will write: ‘Fail –not all sections passed’. The marker will offer brief feedback on each section particularly for any section

that has not achieved a pass. The results will be one of the four below:

Distinction: over 70%

Good Pass: 60-70% Pass: 50-59%

Fail/Rewrite: under 50% (in any section)

Guidelines for PDPL2 Tutorials The tutor’s role is essentially to enable the candidate to consider her/his progress on the Programme, to discuss difficulties and decide how to overcome any problems that prevent successful completion. Tutors are not expected to read draft case histories, but may discuss planning and structuring. Tutors are not involved in assessment and normally tutorials will be confidential. If there should, exceptionally, be a reason to take any of the content outside the tutorial this will normally be by mutual negotiation and consent. Candidates are expected to see their tutor in the tutor’s consulting rooms. Candidates are asked to make contact with the tutor during the first term and from then on if the need arises. Two tutorials per year would be a reasonable average. Tutors must meet the following criteria: 1. Registered with BPC. As Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists 2. Abide by a Code of Ethics and Practice for supervisors. Tutors should invoice WPF Therapy for tutorials. WPF Therapy will not reimburse registrants.

Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme (PDP L2)

APA referencing

APA (American Psychological Association) referencing style.

You must reference all material you use from all sources and acknowledge your sources in the body of your paper each time you use a fact, a conclusion, an idea or a finding from someone’s work. This establishes the academic authority of your work and acknowledges the researchers and writers you have drawn upon in your paper.

It is necessary to cite your sources each time you:

Use your own wording (summarise or paraphrase) to explain or discuss what someone has said. In this case, you should include the author and year of publication only.

or

Reproduce/ quote an author’s exact words, that is, copy into your paper, word for word directly from a text. In this case a page number must be included in addition to author and year of publication.

Part 1: In text Citations (i.e. summary or paraphrase)

APA style uses the author(s) and date of publication when you are paraphrasing, quoting or referring to another person’s ideas in the course of your own work. These should appear in brackets separated by a comma.

Example: (one author)

Essay writing can be made more manageable if a planned approach is taken (Clay, 2003).

Or

Clay (2003) argues that a planned approach to writing essays can be of great benefit.

Example: (two authors)

According to Antonakos and Kazanis (2003) there are advantages in keeping design and research methods simple.

Page 48: Psychodynamic Psychotherapy Programme...letter from WPF Therapy, you can contact the FPC office if you wish to arrange registration with BPC. 3 2. Contact Personnel The Programme,

Appendix 15

Amended March 2013 2

Or

There are advantages to keeping design and research methods simple (Antonakos & Kazanis, 2003).

In the case of three, four or five authors, cite all authors the first time, then in subsequent citations of this work, use the family name of the first listed author plus ‘et al.’ and the year as required.

Quotes (i.e. including the exact words of the original source)

Short Quotes (fewer than 40 words) should run on as part of the sentence with single quotation marks to signal where the quote starts and finishes. The page number indicating where the quote comes from must be included.

Example

Clay (2003) argues that students experience writer’s block because ‘they have not given sufficient thought to reviewing course content and developing their ideas’ (p.47).

Or

Students experience writer’s block because ‘they have not given sufficient thought to reviewing course content and developing their ideas’ (Clay, 2003, p.47).

Longer Quotes (more than 40 words) are known as ‘block quotes’. These quotes should be much less frequent and should:

start on a new line be indented about 5 spaces from the left hand margin omit quotation marks

Example: (the sample block quote below starts ‘some students are tempted etc…. … and ends ‘to their practice’.)

An important stage in assignment writing is planning. Clay (2003) comments that:

Some students are tempted to plunge into writing their papers, beginning with the introduction, but soon find that they experience ‘writer’s block’ and cannot decide what to write next. Part 2: Reference List

An important purpose of the reference list is to enable the reader to locate sources accurately. Therefore details must be correct and complete. Each in-text citation or quotation and the related reference list entry should be identitcal in spelling and and year of publication. A work is listed only once in the reference list, reagrdless of how many times it is cited in text. Works not cited in the text should not appear in the reference list.

N.B. Works Cited in the Reference List should only be the texts and citations used in the written work.

In compiling your APA style Reference List, you should:

list references on a new page with a centred heading titled References

include books, journal articles, online sources etc in one alphabetical listing

order entries alphabetically by family name of author/s list works with no author under the significant word of the title.

Examples of entries in Reference.

Guidelines for Personal Therapy Personal Therapy is required for all candidates on the PDP L2. This has to continue until the Licence has been granted. It should be twice weekly with an approved Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. Below are the names and addresses of organisations whose trainings are considered compatible with ours. Candidates on the PDP L2 programme may select a therapist from one of these organisations. Normally the therapist should have had 5 years post qualification experience. The therapist must be registered with the British Analytic Council (BPC) or eligible for registration. Trainees applying to register on the programme are strongly advised to consult the therapy Adviser for the PDP L2. He will assist in finding an approved training therapist or advise as to whether a current therapist will be approved for the purposes of the training. The Therapy adviser name and contact details can be obtained from the PDP L2 programme administrator 020 7378 2054.

WPF THERAPY

TRAINEE DISABILITY POLICY The following policy outlines WPF Therapy’s policy in relation to trainee disability

WPF Therapy provision in relation to Disablity

WPF Therapy supports and promotes diversity and equality with regard to

student applications and recognises its duties with regard to SENDA (Special

Educational Needs and Disability Act) and the Equality Act 2010.

In order to anticipate the needs of individual students, any applicant with an

existing disability or significant learning difficulty must inform WPF Therapy at

the point of application for a place on one of our courses. This is to enable

staff to discuss with the applicant the extent and nature of their additional

needs and to identify what adjustments WPF Therapy is or is not able to

make on an individual basis.

WPF Therapy provides wheelchair access and our premises are DDA

compliant. WPF Therapy may provide other reasonable adjustments. Learning

materials can be provided in some alternative formats on request, for

example large print course documents. Other adjustments which may be

provided include additional time to complete assignments, tutor support, VDU

anti-glare screens or similar, seminar papers as electronic copies.

Procedure When a statement of disability or significant learning difficulty is made at application stage, the applicant will be asked to provide evidence in writing of how this is likely to affect their abililty to access and respond to the curriculum on offer. The applicant will also be asked to state what adjustments they are seeking from WPF Therapy. This request will be considered by the Programme Manager, Director of Training, Director of Business and Corporate Services and the CEO in terms of what reasonable adjustments WPF Therapy is able to make. The Director of Training or Programme Manager will inform the trainee what it is possible for WPF Therapy to provide.

Background The Equality Act of 2010 and the Disability Discrimination Act (1995) requires that ‘reasonable adjustments’ must be made to working conditions, and the provision of services (such as training) in order to assist a disabled person. An organisation is requred to make reasonable adjustments However the amount of adjustment possible will depend on the organisation involved and what steps are reasonable depends on the circumstances of the case. They will vary according to:

the type of services being provided the nature of the institution or service and its size and resources the effect of the disability on the individual disabled person or student Some of the factors that might be taken into account are:

the financial resources available to the responsible body the cost of taking a particular step the extent to which it is practicable to take a particular step health and safety requirements

the relevant interests of other people http://www.ukcle.ac.uk/resources/directions/previous/issue4/senda/ 9.02.2012
