Hoyt & Son are Bole owners, proprietors, and editors of the South JerseyRepublican. Thia statement is made by order of the Post Office Department.

SATURDAY, MAY 13, 1916

As will be seen by our table of Town Council's vole on licenses,

hey were not granted- unanimously . Mayor Klvins stated that bis

iosition was,—that tbe people bad voted license, and he would vote forhose be deemed wise, reserving the privilege of voting in the negative

when advisable. Mr. Nicolai adopted those as his sentiments. Mr.rlolland wished to make an exception of two— those nearest to his ownjome. But the stand which Mr. Small took was, ' in our opinion, one to)e admired by every lover of home, moral i ty , and good citizenship,—hevoted "No" on every application. He realized that no one has moralright to place a stumbling-block in the way ol a brother, even though alight majority of voters did, in a less enlightened age than this, votehe town wet.

To-day's May-Day Fete is a fitting celebration,— the Town ofiamujonton being just fifty years old on the fifth of March last. It

btarted at that date with 1422 inhabitants, and made slow growth for aevv years—but 1776 in 1880. Its present population is probably over

rtid-fft-pkUy-i n creasiu g \Vjth an abundance of heal thiestair, water and fruit, and occupation for all who are not tocTTa2y~rcrvork, the slogan, "Hammonton, the Hub of South Jersey," is indeedn appropriate one.

Among the earliest settlers in Hammonton we see the names of S.T. Twomey, B. F. Henshaw, F. E. Priestley, George Klv ins , Orville H.3oyt, A. J. Smith, H. J. Monfor t , D. F. Lawson, M. L. Jackson, J. C.\nderson, Samuel Anderson, J. T. French, S. E Brown, C I'. Osgood,Wm, Bernshouse,—all of whom are npw l iv ing , though not ail at present

11 Hammonton.

We very much regret that"Prof. L. C. Armstrong will be transferredTom Hammonton to" Egg Harbor City, — an all-around shif t ing 'of theinstructors. Prof. MacDougal l wil l come here, from Pleasantvil le .

We saw a strange combination on Thursday, — a horse, sadly inneed of oats, and an automobile pump in the wagon. Evidently, thatwas what the poor beast had been l i v ing on for the past fo r tn igh t .

According to the county papers, there wil l be no more gravel spreadon county roads ; but the line from Absecon to the CamJen County linewill be paved wi th permanent material.

Mothers Day to-morrow. Wear a whi te carnat ion in memory ofmother ; or, if she is l i v i n g , spend an hour or two with her.

Chairman Nicolai was right : all gravelling of roads should be doneno withal it may have time to settle and roll down hard.

No, gentlemen, we believe that Sunday sliouTd be a~tiuict day— -Allniblic celebrations should be postponed unt i l Monday.

House cleaning time ; oh, joy !
