Following a number of years of stagnation underthe financial downturn, it appears that the tide isturning with regard to new projects

Like any business sector the security industry has not missedout on the impact of the economic crises of the last few years. In the early days of the recession there were two schools of

thought; firstly that some major jobs would be moth-balled until atime when cash-flow was at more of a premium and secondly, as isusual for a recession, crime would rise so more security measureswould be required.

Looking back there is a case for both of these scenarios havinghappened to some extent. The major crimes of the early downturnappeared to be the theft of items such as diesel and metalmachinery and oddities (manhole covers, cable and statues etc) forscrap value. These thefts did lead to an increase in surveillance andmonitoring applications and the theft of fuel (as prices remainhigh) is still a major problem for the police.

Indeed the CCTV market in the UK did not slow down during therecession as a recent report from Key Note shows a value growth of3.1% in 2012 and a 5.8% growth in 2013. People did not stopbuying cameras in general, but the major contracts were held back.

In terms of shelved projects this was a problem for installers asthere was an increasing reliance upon existing customers andmaintenance contracts to get through the tough times.Furthermore the much publicised encroachment of IT integratorsmoving into the security sphere along with the introduction ofcheap DIY network security products on the high street addedfurther pressures to the bottom line.

But changes are apparently afoot. The green shoots of recoveryare now beginning to blossom and many of the people we havespoken to over the last few months have said that they aredefinitely seeing a change in the market. Indeed all the signs fromthe economic commentators give the impression that the UKmarket is doing rather well these days. Industrial output is up, theservice sector is still growing, unemployment is down, houseprices are rising and house building is also on the up and othersimilar factors are all contributing to the fact that the UK iscurrently showing signs of having the best growth of all the G7countries. Most experts (apart from those with political agendas)agree that the economic tide had turned.

On the crest of this wave the moth-balled projects are beginningto come to fruition and this is good news for the security installeras larger contracts are now on the table. The aforementionedmarket report from Key Note predicts a CCTV value growth of 3.8%for 2014 yet there are people that we have spoken to that believethis will be higher, especially once companies begin looking to freeup budgets that had been tightened in previous years.

Whatever the final figures prove to be, the times are beginningto look financially rosier for the security installer. Obviously thereis not going to be a sudden pot of gold waiting for all of you in theoffice one morning, but all predictions are looking positive – whichis much welcome news.

UK CCTV market to continue growing this yearAccording to ‘Closed Circuit Television’, a newMarket Update from business intelligence

provider Key Note, the UK closed-circuittelevision (CCTV) market grew in value by 3.1%in 2012 and 5.8% in 2013. Key Note anticipatesgrowth was driven by economic recovery andincreased business confidence which has beenfuelling demand for updated equipment andparts.

New construction activity and businessinvestment levels are strong indicators ofdemand for CCTV systems, as it provides majoropportunities for CCTV businesses.Government figures show that constructionoutput in the UK increased by 1.6% in 2013,while business investment in the UK decreasedby 1% in the same year.

Last year, the Care Quality Commission(CQC) announced radical measures to reducethe recurrence of abuse and neglect inBritish care homes by allowing theinstallation of hidden CCTV cameras. Carehome provider, HC-One, became the firstcare home in the UK to install CCTV camerasin its care facilities and it is highly likely thatCCTV in care homes will become morecommon in coming years.

Key Note forecasts the UK CCTV market willincrease further in 2014, by 3.8%.

Dahua provides open access to HDCVIThe HDcctv Alliance has revealed that ZheJiangDahua Technology has opened its patentedHDCVI technology, the basis for the HDcctv AT2.0 standard, to the global video surveillanceindustry, through the HDcctv Alliance MemberIntellectual Property Agreement.

First introduced in late 2012, HDCVItechnology transmits HDTV signals over anylegacy CCTV cabling infrastructure. The HDcctvAlliance ratified HDcctv AT 2.0 in February2014. HDcctv AT 2.0 compliance ensures 100%plug ‘n’ play remote control of any camera fromany compliant DVR, no matter whichmanufacturers.

“Dahua developed HDCVI technology tohelp our growing customer base to enjoy moreof the benefits of HD IP surveillance,” said Mr.Zhu Jiangming, Dahua executive vice presidentand the principal inventor of the seminalHDCVI patents. “We recognise that customerswant all equipment to be 100% multi-vendorplug ‘n’ play, rather than using single-source,proprietary solutions that may not work

together. Dahua’s strategy is,therefore, aimed to maximisethe return on our investmentin HDCVI and in doing somake the technology readilyavailable to othermanufacturers - even ourdirect competitors.

“For these reasons, Dahua has decided toissue licenses under RAND (reasonable andnon-discriminatory) terms to other, reciprocating Steering and ManufacturingMembers of the HDcctv Alliance. Dahua’spolicy is as follows: semiconductormanufacturers implementing the HDcctv AT 2.0standard independently are asked to pay alicense fee on a RAND basis, while HDCVIlicenses for implementing the HDcctv AT 2.0standard are open free of charge to authorisedequipment makers, per the HDcctv AllianceMembers I.P. Agreement to which Dahua are asignatory. We look forward to collaboratingwith our partners in the HDcctv Alliance tofurther accelerate the global migration to HDIP surveillance.”

Security managers central tocutting energy costsAccording to the research conducted by IFSECGlobal.com on behalf of Assa Abloy, it wasfound that a head of security’s role has evolvedin the age of ‘smart’ buildings and now sees itas a priority to implement security solutionsthat consume less energy.

Research demonstrated that heads ofsecurity departments strive to minimise carbonemissions to ensure greater energy efficiency,as it becomes commercially important andbuildings become ‘smarter’. Adoptingautomated temperature detection and otherenvironmental changes and computerscalibrating air conditioning and heatingaccordingly – heads of security departmentsnow strive for greater energy efficiency as wellas protecting staff and assets.

Around a third of survey respondents usingtraditional wired access systems were unawarethat wireless systems consume much lessenergy. The survey canvassed the views offacilities managers, heads of security, installersand integrators.

Staying safe - and cool! With outdoor temperatures at their highest itcan be tempting for employees to stop wearingpersonal protective equipment (PPE), whichoften becomes uncomfortable in hot areas, butaccording to Slingsby there are now moreproducts than ever before to help workers staysafe and cool at work.

As part of the Personal Protective Equipmentat Work Regulations, employers must provideappropriate clothing and equipment wheneverthere are health and safety risks that can’t becontrolled in other ways.

Lee Wright, Marketing Director of Slingsbyexplains: “The summer months often present achallenge where PPE is concerned because itcan be tempting for workers to take off hardhats and high visibility or protective clothing inorder to cool down. Employers have to acceptthat employees don’t like wearing clothing thatis uncomfortable or ill-fitting and ultimatelyPPE is completely pointless if staff aren’t goingto wear it.

“When buying PPE, we always adviseemployers to consider the materials theproduct is made from, the style and fit as wellas the overall design. There are a huge range ofmaterials to choose from that are designed tokeep the wearer cool and dry while being toughand long-lasting. However, in some cases itmay be necessary to offer employees morethan one brand or style in order to cater foreveryone and it is often beneficial to includekey members of the team in the decisionmaking process when buying PPE.”

Lee adds: “Many workplaces are alsointroducing incentive programmes and safetycommittees that encourage employees to lookout for colleagues and speak out when they seepotentially dangerous activities or peopleflouting rules surrounding PPE. These types ofinitiatives can have an immediate impact onboth safety standards and PPE.”

Security locks catch criminalsMultipoint locks have played a major part in aWarrior security door system which foiled anarmed robbery attempt in Birmingham bytrapping the culprits as they tried to maketheir escape from a jewellery shop. Theincident, which was caught on CCTV andfeatured in the BBC programme ‘Caught RedHanded’, demonstrated the attack-resistantqualities of Pickersgill-Kaye’s multipoint locksand the two high security performanceinterlocking doors manufactured by WarriorDoors.

When the silent alarm was triggered by thequick thinking owner, the store filled with athick vapour making visibility impossible. Onerobber found the button to open the internaldoor to the exit, but when his fellow assailantgot through the door and it shut, they foundthemselves imprisoned in the airlock areabetween the two Warrior-made doors.

Helping to trap the robbers in the shopwas Pickersgill-Kaye’s HS170 three-point lockfor access control systems, which has anautomatic deadlocking function with a 25mmbolt throw and high security cylinder guard.Despite repeated and frenzied attacks on thedoors and locks, which had been mortised into help provide a visually appealing look forthe retailer, the two robbers were unable toforce their way out of the airlock area beforeArmed Response Police Units arrived on thescene.

Eryl Jones has recently been appointed to therole of Managing Director of Assa AbloySecurity Solutions, with his predecessor

David Wigglesworth heading up the newspecification division of Assa Abloy UK.

Eryl was previously the company’s CommercialManager and so has extensive experience andknowledge of the trade sector including builders’merchants, OEM, architectural ironmongers andlocksmith channels and his team will now haveincreased focus on developing its relationshipsand offering for the trade.

Speaking on his appointment, Eryl said:“Traditionally we have always had a very strongproduct portfolio, with brands such as Union andAdams Rite. Over recent years we have beenadapting to the increase in projects requiring atotal solution, leveraging the combined strengthof all our brands and products. We considered thetime was right to create a separate specificationoffering and division where this market could befully explored.”

Consequently, the creation of the division hasled to a renewed focus on core trade customersand one of the things Eryl is keen to progress inhis role as Managing Director is realising the fullpotential of brands and defining a productportfolio that helps customers win business innew markets and create new revenue streams.

So is the trade market more suited to yourproduct range than the commercial/domesticmarket? According to Eryl the company’s tradecustomers serve both the commercial anddomestic market. For example, Union’s corerange of mortice locks is frequently used onsocial housing contracts but are also suitable forcommercial buildings.

ProjectsSome companies are finding that their futurebusiness can be enhanced by offering a project-led approach rather than being seen as ‘box-shifters’, a move that Eryl sees is essential for theSecurity Solutions divison.

“Our specification team is already involved ina number of projects,” he told us. “We recognisethat each safety or security challenge is uniqueand we work with our customers to design andbuild solutions that meet their needs. HavingAssa Abloy Security Solutions, as one point ofcontact, allows us to leverage the combinedstrength of all of our brands and their productportfolios. Essentially, our team can advise on anumber of alternatives for projects, according toneed and budget. Our brands’ products havebeen used within a number of sectors, includinghealthcare, education and commercial projects, which have given us the knowledge to

understand the rigours and demands of differentenvironments. We have a number of largeprojects in the pipeline in London and are lookingforward to showcasing our skills.”

FeedbackOne of the benefits of dealing directly withinstallers is the feedback that manufacturers canreceive for existing systems and new productlaunches and upgrades. Eryl has alreadyexperienced this.

“Over the years we have led many of ourproduct developments with the desire to makeour customer’s lives easier,” he says. “Forexample, Union’s original StrongBOLT BritishStandard 5 lever mortice lock was known toimprove ease of installation and recently anumber of installers fed back to us that theywould benefit from having its features across awider range of products. So, we extended therange; now installers can save time when fittinglocks to all projects, to bathrooms, to front doors, using features such as its easily reversible latch, which allows the handing of a door to be changedsimply and quickly.

“With some of our products we have made‘how-to’ videos, to offer installers step-by-stepinstructions to make their jobs easier. This can beseen with our Eximo panic device video, illustrating that the Eximo range also has anumber of features that can save time onconstruction sites.”

Eryl hopes that working more closely withtrade customers will give the company moreinsight into how it can improve its productsfurther and continue to save installers time, sothey can complete jobs faster and thereforeimprove their profitability.

BrandsEryl states that one of his biggest successes atthe company so far has been his part in offeringsolution driven business support for customers, with the launch of Assa Abloy Security Solutionsin 2011. Union, Adams Rite, Assa, Trimec andPemko are no longer brands managed in isolationand can be reached by a single point of contact.

However, those individual brands haveheritage and their own clear positioning in themarket, as well as a clear focus on their ownspecific vertical markets.

“I am proud to continue to maintain and investin our brands individually, including our oldestheritage brand, Union,” concludes Eryl. “Wecontinue to manufacture many products from ourUK factory in Willenhall and this is something weshould be proud of achieving in such acompetitive market.”

The Wedge Pledge campaign aims to raiseawareness of the common occurrence offire doors being wedged open, rendering

them useless in the event of a fire.Doors are one of the most important fire

safety features in a building and also, sadly, one of the most common dangers highlightedby fire inspectors. Research carried out byFireco showed that in 64% of premises visitedby the fire service, fire doors were found to bewedged open.

Neil Purssey, Managing Director of Fireco, says: “I see fire doors being wedged open on adaily basis in a range of different buildingsincluding shops, gyms, restaurants, office buildingsand blocks of flats. If youspot a fire door beingwedged open by a doorwedge, bin, fireextinguisher or anythingelse please get yourcamera out, take a snapand tweet it. We want tounite the nation and put astop to this dangerouspractice.”

InsuranceNot only is wedging a fire door a dangerousthing to do it can also result in some problemsfor the company involved if a fire does occur.

“It is quite possible that in the event of a firean insurer would be unlikely to pay for alldamages when the business is found to havepropped numerous fire doors open,” says Neil.“Insurers are acutely aware that wedging openfire doors can, and has, caused chimney effectswhere people have lost entire buildings.Conversely, if used correctly, the majority of firedoors will hold a fire in a room for 30 minutesby which time the Fire & Rescue service will beon site.”

As far as Neil is concerned there is only oneperson who is most at fault if there is a breachof fire safety in a building: “There is only oneguilty party,” he says, “and that is the‘Responsible Person’, generally deemed to bethe owner, occupier or employer. However, the‘Responsible Person’ can put measures in placeto assist them. For instance, someone else canbe nominated to be a ‘Competent Person’ forthe premises. This person can be sent on firesafety training courses and delegated day today fire safety management. When people aretrained correctly, they are aware of thepotential dangerous consequences of wedgingfire doors.”

No surpriseThe high figure (64% of premises visited by thefire service had doors wedged open) does notsurprise Neil at all as he frequently sees firedoors being wedged open. In fact when herelayed this statistic to fire services in the UK,they all agreed that they expected this figure tobe high and confirmed this was an issue in themajority of properties visited.

So does this high number of doors beingwedged open mean that there is a requirementfor more fire safety awareness training inbuildings among its occupants?

“There is always room for more training. However, it is not necessarily the frequency orlength but the quality of training which isimportant,” explains Neil. “Experience in the fireservice does not automatically qualify you toteach fire awareness. I would always advise

properly checking the credentials ofthose conducting thetraining sessions. It is vitalthey have a fullunderstanding of the FireSafety Order (FSO) and anintricate knowledge of thespecific features of thebuilding in question.”

Best practiceAll fire doors should be closed inthe event of a fire. This is usuallyachieved with a self-closing orfree swing device. Fire doors are

installed to protect the safety of buildingoccupants by preventing the dangerous spreadof smoke and fire, they provide a protectedroute to get out of the building. Fire doors are avital part of the building’s fire strategy, oncethey are wedged the safe egress of occupantscannot be guaranteed.

Wedging open a fire door can provedevastating, as the case of the RoseparkNursing Home in South Lanarkshire highlighted.A fire broke out at Rosepark in a cupboard on 31January 2004 and ripped through the building. The Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) conclusion listeda catalogue of precautions that could havehelped prevent the fire becoming so destructive. One of these precautions was for all bedroomdoors to have door closers and smoke sealsfitted to them.

Installing a free-swing device on each firedoor will allow the door to be safely kept open, but rest assured that the door will automaticallyshut when a fire alarm sounds.

Fire doors are an integral part of a building;they save lives and protect property. If you see afire door being wedged open, I urge you to seethis as an opportunity to discuss an easy-to-install, fully compliant solution.

INTERVIEW

18www.psimagazine.co.uk

Karl Pardoe is the UK and Ireland RegionalSales Manager for March Networks. He hasover twenty years’ experience in the

electronic security and CCTV industry havingheld senior roles within some of the industry’smost well-known organisations, including ADT,Stanley Security (formerly Niscayah) and Tyco(formerly Sensormatic), where he ran a numberof large retail accounts, primarily in themultimedia sector. He joined March Networks inearly June 2014 and we caught up with him aftertwo months in the role.

As a recent appointment at MarchNetworks how are you settling in,especially after a baptism of fire at IFSEC?Most importantly for me, the new products welaunched at IFSEC (the 6700 Series HybridNetwork Video Recorders and the Edge 4eEncoder) have been well received by the marketand have shown that we have technology forany application. In terms of the show itself andmy ‘baptism of fire’ I haven’t actually worked anexhibition for over ten years prior to this year soI had to work extra hard to get through thephysical aspect of the event. The show itself wasgreat for March Networks and not just for the UKmarket, which is obviously my main focus, butfrom a European perspective too.

How have the last twelve months beenfor March Networks? The company has been doing very well and werecently announced European market salesfigures for Q1 2014 that are 78% year on yearhigher than 2013. In less than four years wehave been involved in some major acquisitionsand as a result we have been focused onensuring our internal reorganisation has beencompleted. At the end of last year, March

decided it was time to focus onbuilding the European operationand particularly the UK, hence myappointment. Me being in place

allows us to react quickly totenders and specificationsand my local knowledge ofthe UK sector has proven

valuable alreadyfollowing the

interest we hadat IFSEC. Withme coming on-

board ourexisting clientbase has a newpoint of contact

and gives us the

ability to respond very quickly to enquiries fromthe UK and Ireland.

So there is a renewed focus on the UK?Yes and it is a two-fold focus too. Firstly is thecommercial element of what we are trying toachieve in the market, which is to triple ourrevenues, but secondly there is brandawareness work that needs to be done. In thepast March Networks has had a good UKpresence, however without having a dedicatedperson on board there was a lack of continuityin the way we were seen.

Are you seeing any trends in the market? From a product perspective in the UK we stillhave a lot of analogue cameras and the maintrend of recent years in which the industry ismoving into the realms of networked security isstill going strong. In terms of current trends Ithink you need look no further than the projectsthat are now being commissioned. Over the lastfew year we have seen a number of budgetsbeing put on hold, thus slowing down thenumber of new projects coming on board, buttoday those budgets are being released and theprojects are going live. People were obviouslystill doing business during the recession, wehave a strong market in the UK, but spendingwas often being cut or held back. I havedefinitely noticed this situation changingrecently and the prospects for next year areextremely encouraging with the sizes of newprojects increasing and being more innovative.

Another trend I have noticed is that thepeople we are talking to are moreknowledgeable than before. The buyers andspecifiers of security equipment are more ITliterate and the procurement side of the marketis seeing the influence of IT departments gettinginvolved. A few years ago I would say that therewas not such a good understanding ofnetworked security and IT systems as there istoday and this makes our job much moreinteresting.

How do you think the industry haschanged since your early days in thesector?Since I first came into the security sector I thinkthe most striking change has been in the level ofprofessionalism in the market. In that I meanthat the overall quality of the systems andcompanies involved in the market has risen.Twenty years ago we had more of a disparitybetween the top end and the bottom end of thesurveillance sector; today this gap has closed. In addition it was quite common for

manufacturers to be launching products thatthey thought were right for the market withoutasking the installers and end-users what theyactually wanted. The whole industry hasnow become more ‘blue chip’ and alongwith all of the mergers and acquisitionswe have had, the quality of the productsand the expertise of the manufacturersis much higher than before. We stillhave many of the same individuals aswe had 20 years ago, but the way inwhich we do business has vastlyimproved.

As a company you don’t justpromote systems for better security butalso for the supply of businessinformation. How important are the non-security features of surveillance? It was an entirely conscious decision for us topromote the benefits of surveillance systems interms of the Management Information (MI)features as it is crucial to our development pathand product offerings. In the US we have had ahuge level of success in showing howcompanies can improve margins in terms ofReturn on Investment (ROI) thanks to theadditional benefits from having a surveillancesystem installed. The data that is created is ofinterest to marketing departments and othergroups within an organisation which means thatthe camera systems can be purchased usinginput from a pool of resources, not just thesecurity budget. We are a security company, butthe MI focus of the products allows greaterusage of the technology to bring a range ofbenefits to an organisation. For installers thismeans that they can add more features to abusiness proposal other than better security, which in turn, can help them get more contractsaccepted.

As a network security company wouldyou say that you are converting morepeople to IP from analogue or upgradingcurrent IP users? There are two ways to answer that question.Overall, our global focus is to convert people touse IP however if you look at the market in theUK and Ireland our hybrid solutions of IP andBNC connections is where we see the growthover the next twelve months. We also have anentirely IP oriented VMS systems which allowsus to develop the software and information thatthe technology can provide with additional plug-ins, integration etc. So all in all we seeopportunities in both converting to IP andupgrading existing systems.

Obviously the rate at which the conversion tonetworked security should take place is not thesame for all projects. There are installers in the

UK who are servicing huge analogue systemsand for them to try and convert all of thoseapplications to IP would be very hard, especiallywith all of the new cabling that would beinvolved. If someone has a system that isworking well and the image quality is good thenthey can look at a hybrid approach which offerssome of the benefits of IP and so, essentially, take a longer term view to converting to IPrather than doing it all in one go.

What do you think the role is fortechnologies such as HD-SDI?I think it a very good technology, but it is notsomething that we get involved with. Yes, itoffers the benefits of HD down a coax but itdoesn’t address the issue of IP because at somepoint you need to sit the signal on the network. It has some great features but I tend to think ofit as a ‘halfway house’ between analogue and IPand it does require some investment for theequipment which at some stage may need to beupgraded again.

What does the future hold for thesecurity industry? In the short term I do not expect that there willbe wholesale changes in the market and thehalls of IFSEC will remain fairly similar to whatthey were this year in terms of newtechnologies. The IP push will continue and sowill the number of projects coming on line andthere will be more cameras with higherresolutions being launched.

I do not think that the surveillance market isyet at saturation point. If you look back tenyears we needed the development of IP to be amuch needed new and exciting factor becausethe market was almost stagnant and I feel thatthe move into networking and integration ishelping to keep the industry buoyant. The IPrevolution has been a very good thing for us alland with the country coming out of recession weshould see a period of growth for the wholesecurity sector.

“The IP revolution hasbeen a very goodthing for us all andwith the countrycoming out ofrecession we shouldsee a period ofgrowth”

we take a look at some of the products we think

you won’t want to miss this month.

Cloud-based access controlsystem launchedNorbain has launched VOLO, a new way ofdelivering access control solutions. By combiningcontroller technology with GSM connectivity andcloud hosted software, installation time, infrastructure and hardware costs can besignificantly reduced. According to the company, with scalability from one to over 10,000 sites, without the need for local servers orinfrastructure, the most challenging and diverseof access control systems can be delivered costeffectively, wherever they are located.

As well as no requirement for a PC, the GSMGPRS connectivity means that a site does not evenneed local or direct connection to the internet, making it ideal for remote sites. Systemenhancements and upgrades can be madeinstantly, without the need to visit a site. Thisensures the latest version of the software is alwaysin operation, even across multi-site end users. Inthe same way, system programming, adding users, card issuance, configuring groups and access rightscan all be performed from any supported web-browser from anywhere in the world.

Hosted services are provided through anannual charge as opposed to a higher up-frontsoftware investment with upgrade or expansioncharges later on. Additional licences are neededonly as required and when the system grows.www.volo-access.com

Periscope camera for tactical surveillanceMEL Secure Systems has launched an HD-SDIPeriscope camera. Designed for law enforcementand broadcast applications in a range of mobile orfixed covert surveillance operations, the cameraincludes an HD-SDI interface to transmituncompressed surveillance images in 1080presolution at full frame rates over coaxial cablemaking installation a quick and trouble-freeprocess. It uses a Sony day/night camera modulewith image stabilisation and transmits HD imagesat high speed to be received at distances of up to100 metres without requiring repeaters.

With Pelco-D telemetry RS485 compatibility, the camera has PTZ functionality with 360˚panand 60˚ tilt with continuous rotation. A motordrive system allows precise positioning controleven when panning at high speed and, becausethere is no latency, operators can follow specificevents with a PTZ joystick, even at the mostextreme zoom settings of 30x optical and 8xdigital.

Manage your premises viaremote accessCDVI is launching the ATRIUM-100 access controlsystem to the market in September 2014. The systemallows a user to manage their premises, via theinternet using a smartphone, tablet or web browser.ATRIUM’s embedded web server gives instant results, and provides control of devices as well as criticalreports.

Developed on the back of the ATRIUM-10, the capacity has increased fromten to 100 readers, but includes more as CDVI’s MD, Alan Walker, explains: “The powerand speed of the internet, along with evolving IP technology, has created the acceptancethat it is ok to “manage on the move”, and ATRIUM-100 is simply taking its placealongside other product sectors which offer remote management technology.”

The increase to 100 readers satisfies the capacity requirement and also the demandfrom installers for features such as CCTV and alarm integration, interlocking, email alerts. www.cdvi.co.uk

Self-contained NVR in the family The Vectis iX family of IP-based video recordingsolutions launched by Security Products fromSiemens includes self-contained network video

recorders (NVR) as well as network videosoftware (NVS) for server-based systems. Both are capable of recording full-HD imagesfrom up to 48 cameras simultaneously at 25frames per second and support resolutionsof up to 20 megapixels.

All products use H.264 video compressionstandard to ensure minimum network bandwidthusage. They are compatible with the MPEG4 andMJPEG standards for the convenience of userswith existing cameras and support the ONVIFProfile S standard.

The built-in VSS_SDK (software developer kit)interface allows Vectis iX systems to be integratedwith the Siemens MM8000 access control and firesafety system. In addition to object detection, theon-board video analytics functionality also offersobject removal.

NVR models are available in 6, 16, 32 and 48channel versions. They support an internalrecording capacity of up to 24 TB (2 TB for the 6channel model); additional recording capacity canbe added externally. Shock sensor to add flexibilityPyronix has released details of a new accessory forthe Enforcer two-way wireless range. The combinedmagnetic contact and shock sensor – the MC1/SHOCK-WE – gives addedflexibility from one product, being designed to be placed in positions where it isnecessary for a shock sensor and magnetic contact to be present, such asdoors and windows.

Tris Young, Marketing Manager at Pyronix, said of the release: “The Enforcertwo-way wireless security system has been designed with installers in mind atevery step of the process, and the new MC1/SHOCK-WE continues in this ethos. This2in1 sensor can be learned to the Enforcer separately, allowing separate shock andmagnetic contact transmissions of alarm signals to be sent individually butsimultaneously to the panel. Flexibility is further enhanced through being able to learnthe contacts individually, if for some instance either the shock or the magnetic contactis not required.” www.pyronix.com

Biometrics custom kit releasedThe Custom Kit from ievo lets users incorporate a host of options alongside thestandard ultimate and micro fingerprint readers including card reader integration, increased template capacity and Power over Ethernet (PoE) among others. Thisallows users to effectively create their very own bespoke biometric access controlsystem to suit the needs of specific projects.

Customers can now tailor their own readers as they require. For instance, if thereis already a card reader at the site, customers can replace the card reader withoptions that let the biometric readers use most pre-existing cards. They can alsoprovide a biometric template on the card, reducing their reliance on a centraldatabase. For users wanting to use identification mode (1:N search), ievo offers astandard capacity of up to 10,000 fingerprint templates and can be expanded to50,000 templates.

By using PoE to power the control board, readerinstallation becomes faster, easier and more cost-effective. Wireless or Bluetooth communication canbe used instead of a LAN. Now, one control board canhandle both an ingress and egress reader reducingoverall hardware and installation costs. The unit canbe fitted with a Two Line Screen, ideal for time andattendance applications in which users want to seethe date and time they scan in and out. Theseadditional functions will not change the look of thestandard ultimate and micro fingerprint readers, sousers can enhance their access control systemwithout physically altering the product.www.ievoreader.com

System for enhanced integrated HD IP videoAD Network Video has introduced its highdefinition IP video surveillance solution, VirtualNVR, which combines unlimited scalability with

three tiers of distributed storage. The Virtual NVR solution distributes video storage across single or

multiple locations, with IP cameras recording and storing images onthe in-camera server. These will carry on recording if network outagesoccur as the devices operate like standalone systems, resulting in nosingle point of failure. The evidential recordings are easily accessiblelocally or from control rooms via a single user interface and areexported in compliance with police and home office guidelines.

Recordings can be archived and managed from a central locationdriving greater efficiency and flexibility in locating and retrievingvideo from multiple sites. www.ad-networkvideo.com/virtualNVR.php

Two box network cameras announcedVivotek has announced the launch of its two new professional boxnetwork cameras IP8155HP and IP8165HP which offer 60 fps at 1.3-Megapixel resolution and 60 fps at 2-Megapixel resolution respectively.

Both cameras are designed with WDR technology; IP8165HPdelivers WDR Pro, while IP8155HP is equipped with the even moreadvanced WDR Pro II, which provides extreme visibility under highcontrast environments with a four-shutter capture method.Combined with 3D Noise Reduction Technology, IP8155HP andIP8165HP are able to capture video under low-light conditions andreduce bandwidth from sensor noise. In order to control the iris withprecision, both cameras are designed with a P-iris lens with itsbuilt-in stepper motor. Through close integration with the camerafirmware, the lens is able to keep the iris opening at an optimallevel at all times.

In order to help installers to adjust the focus of the camerasmore easily, the RBF (Remote Back Focus) system is beingintroduced on both cameras, ensuring precise focus adjustment. Inaddition, incorporating the EIS (Electronic ImageStabilisation) function allows the image to be freeof turbulence whenever physical shaking of thecamera is detected. www.vivotek.com

I’m Matthew Phelps, Managing Director of Eaton’s Security business. Working Smarter is a new series of columns where, with colleagues across the industry, we examine the key issues affecting professional security installers.

For this month’s PSI panel discussion I joined other industry

colleagues to examine the skills shortage. It’s an issue that

continues to cause widespread concern and rightly so. The

gap between how many people we have, and what we need,

is widening all the time.

Having listened to business owners, senior managers,

installation and service engineers across the industry, it is

obvious there is no ‘one size fits all’ solution. That said most

people believe apprenticeships and similar development

schemes for young people are essential. Based on my own

experience I believe in this approach and have implemented of

this type of programme within Eaton’s Security business, and

quietly supported training schemes outside our business.

According to the National Apprenticeship Service, 72%

of businesses report improved productivity as a result of

employing an apprentice - and there are wider benefits too.

A report by City & Guilds found that UK businesses could

be boosted by £4.37bn by 2020 through the creation of an

additional million apprenticeship places.

It is clear that the education system must do more to meet

this need. The bridge to employment needs to be broader

too. As a youngster my options were university or a job.

Depressingly, that doesn’t seem to have changed. I didn’t

go to university, but I was lucky enough to work for people

who fed my appetite for knowledge, as well as experience.

Today, the exciting transition from school to work must include

vocational choices that lead to qualifications that are valued by

employers, employees and customers alike.

In my opinion the biggest challenges we face involve

improving the perception of the industry, and promoting it as

one that can offer genuine career opportunities.

One way to do this is to convey the increasing rate of change

in our sector. The security industry is undergoing a massive

transformation and this year is the first that the installation of

IP systems will outnumber analogue. Likewise, security’s role

in the Internet of Things – the ability of an individual device

to ‘talk to’ another device and to use data that is obtained

without human intervention – will only make us more

IT-focused.

We must wake up to the new possibilities that are all around

us. Intelligent residential and commercial buildings utilising

converged IT networks are not the stuff of the future – they

are happening now. With the right skills, the next generation

of security installation professionals have a golden opportunity

to play a major role in the implementation of IP technology.

If we are to attract high calibre young people and reduce

the skills shortage, it’s up to all of us to make sure that

the potential rewards for joining the industry are clearly

communicated.

The Keylex 2100 from Securikeyis an example of the growingnumber of mechanical code

locks on the market today. The heavyduty K2100 series is available withknob or lever action operation foruse with mortice deadlocking latchor mortice sashlock. A furtherversion is compatible with rim lockpanic bars for escape doorapplications. The lock comes as acomplete assembly with thesashlock or latch as applicable.

The unit provided for evaluationwas a K2100L lever action (to bothsides) double action deadlockinglatch in satin chrome finish. Construction of themechanical code door furniture is very solid andhas been designed for high traffic applicationswhere several hundred operations may berequired daily. Consequently the product issomewhat bulkier than some similar products onthe market.

The unit is suitable for mounting on timber, metal, UPVC and composite doors and is suppliedwith good installation instructions that includedrilling templates for door furniture, mortice latchand strike plate. Installation itself is astraightforward affair for anyone with basic lockfitting skills. Lever action units are supplied handedso this needs to be specified when ordering.

Setting of the code should be completed beforefinal fitting of the lock since the furniture has to beremoved for this to take place. The code isdetermined by the orientation of the hooks withinthe external (insecure) lock furniture. Setting thecode is straightforward although care needs to betaken when removing the back plate (matrix) so asnot to take any hooks out with the matrix. Thechosen code is selected by reversing the hooks asrequired such that their copper coloured end is notshowing. There are 14 digits (0-9 + A-D) providingin excess of 16,000 combinations, although themanufacturer generally recommends use of 3-6digits only.

The lock uses a double action deadlocking latchthat locks every time the door is closed. From theinsecure side, the code has to be entered tooverride the deadlock and retract the latch. Freeegress is provided from the secure side.

Operation requires the digits to be reset usingthe ‘Cancel’ button above the 14 digits. It is simplya matter of then pressing the allocated codebuttons firmly followed by the ‘Release’ buttonfound below them. This will enable the doorlever/knob to be operated once only.

As with other mechanical code locks, thebuttons relating to the ‘code’ may actually beoperated in any order.

With the latch held back via the handle, the

lock may be set for‘free’ operation via thethumbturn locatedabove the handle onthe secure side. Thelatch still engageseach time the doorcloses but enablescontinuousoperation of thehandle from thesecure side untilsuch time as thethumbturn isreturned to thenormal locked

position. A key overridefacility is also available asan option, although thecylinder is located on thebase of the door, requiring the key to be insertedvertically to the underside of the lockfurniture which looks a little awkward.

The deadlocking latch assembly itself uses anylon snib and nylon insert on the bearingsurface of the latch bolt for smoother operationof the deadlocking mechanism. This begs thequestion as to how well the nylon will stand upto heavy traffic use.

Several options are available such as rebatekits, coded entry/exit and escape doorversions.

Overall, the product is well made, feels verysolid to operate and should give prolongedreliable use.

The RWX34S smoke and heatdetector has been introduced tocomplement the growing range of

wire-free products from Risco. This unitcombines two separate detectiontechnologies to maximise bothperformance and applications for use.Designed for the domestic market, theRWX34S is compatible with all Riscowire-free systems. The detector issupplied with a surface mount quickrelease base, mounting screws, batteries and installation instructions.

Installation of the RWX34S is a simple affairrequiring only two screws to secure the base inthe chosen location, the smoke and heat detectorthen merely clips into place with a clockwise turn.A locking pin is provided to ensure the unitdoesn’t come loose. The accompanyinginstructions are clear and concise (if a little smallfor aging eyes) and include fairly detailed noteson correct mounting positions for the detector.

Power is provided via two 3V Lithium CR123Abatteries that mount under a cover on the rear ofthe detector and should give an operational life ofaround three years. Before powering the unithowever, the method of detection needs to beselected via the three dip switches at the back ofthe unit.THE FOLLOWING DETECTION MODES ARESELECTABLE:• Smoke Only • Heat Only • Smoke and Heat (OR logic)If smoke and heat detection mode is enabled, theposition of the other two dip switches is ignored.

Smoke detection uses a photoelectric chamberand complies with EN 14604 requirements.

Heat detection is via two separate sensorsproviding both fixed temperature and rate of risedetection.

Our evaluation unit was tested in conjunctionwith the LightSYS 2 hybrid control panel but theproduct is compatible with all RISCO wire-freesystems (both 1-way and 2-way). With the controlpanel in the RF learn mode, the batteries areplaced in the detector and the tamper switchoperated for a period of three seconds to send awrite message to the panel which then displaysrecognition of the device.

When activated the detector has an onboardsounder providing approximately 85dB at 3metres away. There is a self-test button on theface of the detector which will activate both theonboard sounder and send an alarm message tothe control panel. We tested the unit for a varietyof mounting locations and operation modes. TheRWX34S performed reliably for all modes ofdetection throughout our time with the productand at ranges significantly greater than are like tobe experienced in most residential applications.

The RWX34S combined smoke and heatdetector is a welcome addition to the Risco wire-free range providing a new dimension to theirresidential products. The unit is quite compact, although perhaps a little deeper than commonstandalone detectors and manufacturing qualityappears to be good. Dual detection technologiesprovide superior performance and true flexibilityfor residential applications. In this instance, onemight say – one detector fits all.

CCTV TRENDS

For the last few years we have been told thatthe growth of IP will eventually overtake thesales of analogue cameras and one day in the

not too distant future all systems will benetworked and analogue will be history. Theproblems with this statement are that there arestill lots of people who like working withanalogue technology and lots of users who getthe type of surveillance they want from it. Somepeople have no need for HD, analytics or remoteaccess, so why switch (or migrate as it is called)?Furthermore as long as the analogue marketremains popular in certain quarters, somemanufacturers will carry on producing camerasand installers will continue fitting andmaintaining the systems.

Of course networked technology today is bigbusiness – who knows what would havehappened to the electronic security industrywithout the introduction of IP? – and there arescores of companies trading solely on the back ofIP CCTV. This means that for businesses to thrivethey need installers to fit IP technology ratherthan analogue, which is why the major marketingpush of the most visible companies in the marketare talking about IP. But how does this sit withinstallers?

Analogue businessMany of you will have some long-established andprobably extensive contracts for the maintenanceof analogue systems and we have been told forsome time that one of the main reasons why theIP side of things has not yet blown analogue outof the water is the lack of networking knowledgeamongst UK installers. Both factors couldtherefore lead to a bit of a slowdown when itcomes to the ‘migration’ angle, but for how muchlonger can you rely on your analogue business tokeep you afloat? It is widely considered that theencroachment of the UK surveillance market by ITinstallers will only serve to make the analogue-centric security installer obsolete so someelement of IP installation service could be seen asvital as the world continues to embracenetworking.

In the past the so-called education gapbetween the traditional security installerand IP technology has existedwith a feeling thatnetworking is somehow morecomplicated than the existinganalogue format and withsome validity too. Sometimesnew technology is promoted

in a manner that shows its features and benefits, but in a confusing manner because theperson/company showing the product isexpecting a similar level of understanding fromthe audience. In marketing speak it’s called over-pitching the idea – when you talk to your potentialcustomer in the same way you would a companycolleague. A simple analogy would be moderntelevisions; if all you want to know is whatchannels you can get, why would you beinterested to hear how satellites work? Earlyexponents of IP were certainly guilty of creatingsome confusion.

More confusion is created by the variousoptions that allow people to have a form of IPCCTV without changing all of the components oftheir original system. In no way are thesetechnologies inferior (and their popularitycertainly shows that they are very well thought ofby installers and customers) but when there arenumerous options it can muddy the water a bit.Remember the days when we had BSB, Sky, cable,OnDigital etc? Too many options, means too manydecisions. So while HD-SDI, encoders and variousother technologies all offer alternatives andgenuine benefits, some people view them as atemporary halfway house to full migration –usually those who work in IP. Again, it is worthnoting that CCTV should be fit-for-purpose, sogoing ‘full IP’ is not a requirement for everyapplication and the ROI on fitting an encoderrather than ripping out the whole existingsurveillance system to begin again from scratch isobvious.

However IP surveillance solutions have notbeen left undeveloped. In the last few years wehave begun to see technology branded as ‘plugand play’, meaning that all you need to do is plugsomething in and you have completed the build.Unfortunately (again let’s blame the early IPpromoters) while the hardware was plug and play, the software behind it definitely wasn’t. Therewas still plenty to do in the program screen (GUI)

PLUG AND PLAY AWAY Genuine plug and playsystems make IPmigration easy, sowhat’s stopping you? It’s certainly not thequality of thetechnology nowavailable

withlocating ports and

naming of each camera etc that itwas not uncommon to see eyes glazing over in

product demos. Yes it was much easier thanprevious systems but still required a goodunderstanding of networking, licensing andsoftware management and for some people plugand play was a bit more plug and pray in thosedays even though the idea had already beenmastered by some companies operating in theaccess control market and with the cheap IPsecurity systems found in high street retailers.

But then along came the game changer in theform of a company that had traditionally been anOEM of systems with their own-branded range ofsimplified professional IP technology. The DirectIPlaunch from IDIS (latest system extensivelyreviewed in last month’s PSI) caught the attentionof the market when it first launched in early 2013because it required no software knowledge, programming skills or network experience. Youreally did just plug the cameras into one end ofthe cable and the NVR into the other and thesystem automatically did the rest. Of course youcould then go on to tweak the system as desired, but this simplification of the process madeeveryone sit up and take notice.

Very swiftly other manufacturers joined in withtheir own launches and the true plug and playsector was born. The cameras and NVRs vary butthe premise remains the same – for the untrainedsecurity installer who has never fitted IPtechnology before, all he/she needs to do (oncethe cables have been fitted) is put the cameras up

and plug them in. This ‘Zero Configuration’ (asSamsung Techwin calls it) means that the world of

networked security is no longer a closed shopto the analogue-centric installer bringingwith it new features that you can promoteto customers – not all of them securityrelated either. For example, businessintelligence data such as footfall, hotspotsetc are all valuable to various sections

within a company and may well allow surveillancebudgets to be increased as other departmentscontribute to a contract in recognition of theinformation they can gleam from analytics.

Expanding the systemWhen technology is simplified in such a manneras plug and play offers it does not deal with thestill prevalent education gap, so if you need to fitsomething more expansive in the future you aretechnically still left out in the cold when it comesto networking, but have no fear, R&D neversleeps. At IFSEC this year we saw manufacturersexhibiting plug and play as the basis of completesystems with new cameras, analytics andimproved functionality so while the systems arestill simplified they now have higher specs andmore features. This means that there may be noneed to upgrade to ‘proper IP’ from your plug andplay technology in the future anyway.

Companies like IDIS, D-Link, SamsungTechwin, Videcon, Vicon, Y3K, Pelco by Scheideretc will not sit back and leave plug and play alonenow that they have developed systems for themarket, they will continue launching new andmore advanced equipment as resolutions, bandwidth, analytics etc all improve with time. Itwould therefore seem that unlike sometechnologies, plug and play will not be seen as ahalfway house to ‘going IP’ over the coming years. In fact with the developments we’ve seen so farwith plug and play, plus the weight of some of themajor companies operating in this sector, it maywell be the way that much of the IP marketevolves in time to come.

PoE

In days gone by it was not considered a goodidea to run data cables anywhere near powercables. The result of doing so was interference

or even data corruption, however those timeshave changed.

The development of IP security systems hasresulted in a number of benefits for the installerand the end user both in terms of ease ofinstallation (see the feature on plug and play inthis edition), analytics, image resolution and inthe case of cabling, cost reductions. When youconsider what you can do with just one cable;audio, video, power and telemetry in just one linethe benefits over traditional methods are clear. For example, in previous years it was notuncommon to have to fit four cables (in the caseof a PTZ) with one cable for the unit, one for theaudio and one for the power. The costimplications of this may have limited the amountof work that you could pitch for, however thereduced cost of being able to transmit power anddata along the same wire, or a dedicated wiremake overall project costs much lower.

What’s more, PoE, and it’s more powersupplying alternative PoE+, are simple solutionsmeaning that it is cheaper to buy the materialsand only give you one point of potential failurecompared to a multi-cabled application – which initself is time saving as you know which cable it isthat has failed.

Furthermore, PoE is not only a CCTV solution itis a function of a range of products includingaccess control systems and locking mechanismsso in new builds, in particular multi-tenantedapartment buildings it offers an easy solution forsimplified power distribution and installation.

Of course there has always been the elephantin the room when it came to pitching IP as savingmoney on cabling for existing applications, as inmost cases the wiring is already in place, so whatsaving is being made there? PoE typically onlycomes into play if there is no existing powersupply at the new camera position. Otherwise, itwould be a retrofit, i.e. remove the analoguecamera, and power the new IP camera with theexisting power supply cable that once poweredthe analogue camera position – therefore no needfor PoE. Then again you ‘d be hard pushed thesedays to find a company without a network cablerunning around the site.

PoE and PoE+ do offer real benefits to newbuilds and there are a number of manufacturersthat have spent a lot of R&D time and money todevelop systems and bring them to market, but isit the ideal choice? Obviously installers andspecifiers should be pushing the technology that

best serves the customer’s needs and as we’veoutlined already, in order to benefit from PoE,analogue-centric customers are not going torequest a complete refit to take advantage of it.However new projects that are taking advantageof the integrative nature of the latest securitysystems will look upon PoE as a great benefit inspeeding installation.

There are always other ways to do things andwith power supplies there are alternatives to PoE,such as power injectors, and various reasons fordoing things differently. Reasons for using othersystems could be cost-effectiveness orconstraints due to a remote location so it mayeven be necessary to combine different methodsto achieve the desired result. It should beremembered that PoE is an established standardin the industry while other upcomingtechnologies are not yet at the level that PoE is atin terms of meeting requirements.

For remote locations, for example PoE may notbe the best choice with solar panels and UPSsystems running on alternatives to diesel such asmethanol fuel cells providing successful resultsfor certain conditions. PoE is not the onlysolution, but as it is a feature built into a lot oftoday’s cameras it is an option that presents itselfto the fore for consideration at least.

The right choicesWhen it comes to pitching for a contract then, IPoffering PoE benefits may or may not present amore viable alternative to continuing withanalogue as the cabling for that is already inplace, but it will definitely bring down the cost of

PoE AND POWERING PROJECTS

PoE, and it’s morepower supplyingalternative PoE+, aresimple solutions thatonly give you onepoint of potentialfailure compared to amulti-cabledapplication

a new build install. But if things start to get a littlecompetitive when it comes to contract proposalsit is worth remembering that the choice of cablingitself can help you keep your prices down, but thisis a Catch 22 situation. As distributorstraditionally sell high-end and low-end cables, asan installer, when you are up against othercontenders for a contract you need to installwhatever cable you can to make the deal cost-effective for you. If you use cheap cable howeverthere are pitfalls.

Cheap cable cannot carry the signal for HDcameras because the signal is carried down thecopper, not the dielectric, and as a result you’d betrying to run it in most cases down copper coatedsteel (as used in cheaper cable). With around 75%of the UK using cheap cable the transition isgoing to be difficult! When using cheap Cat5 cableyou’ll invariably find that the twists are not longenough resulting in Grade B product costingaround £20-£30 a box compared to £70 a box forgood quality cable.

Better quality cable will not only carry the HDsignal but it tends to be more resistant to crackingand with cheaper cable there will be noise on theline. Therefore the rule is to stick to buying decentcable – never buy cheap cable because if you doyou’ll be creating so many problems for yourself

down the line. Specifying cheaper cable just towin a contract is not a good economic decision.

Distance is one of the main misunderstandingsthat exists surrounding PoE and power supply.Ethernet technology has a distance associatedwith it to be able to send a perfect signal. A lot ofpeople in the security sector are of the opinionthat you can only go 90m with a cable run. However if you have switches, an NVR and acamera you can usually go as far as you want. And note, it is often said that all switches that youuse in a PoE system have to be PoE switches, which just isn’t the case. You would only requirePoE switches at the camera end.

The futureAs we have reported and you have no doubt seenin the marketplace, the IT installer has started totake an interest in the installation of CCTVsystems. With the increase in networking and thelikelihood that any premises you go into thesedays will have a network already in place, the PoEoption (fitted to many of today’s cameras) canpresent a financially appealing angle. It’s not forevery project but if it suits and you get the cablingquality right, PoE should be worth considering asa first option, especially as we go further downthe path of widespread IP usage.

PoE

PoE is not the onlysolution, but as it is afeature built into a lotof today’s cameras itis an option thatpresents itself to thefore for considerationat least.

THE POWER BASICSPoE explained by Axis CommunicationsPower over Ethernet (PoE) is a technology that integrates power into a standard LANinfrastructure. It enables power to be provided to the network device, such as an IP phone or anetwork camera, using the same cable as that used for network connection. It eliminates theneed for power outlets at the camera locations and enables easier application of uninterruptiblepower supplies (UPS) to ensure 24 hours a day, 7 days a week operation.

PoE technology is regulated in a standard called IEEE 802.3af and is designed in a way thatdoes not degrade the network data communication performance or decrease the network reach. The power delivered over the LAN infrastructure is automatically activated when a compatibleterminal is identified, and blocked to legacy devices that are not compatible. This feature allowsusers to freely and safely mix legacy and PoE-compatible devices, on their network.

The standard provides power up to 15.4W on the switch or midspan side, which translates toa maximum power consumption of 12.9W on the device/camera side – making it suitable forindoor cameras. Outdoor cameras as well as PTZ and dome cameras have a power consumptionthat normally exceeds this, making PoE functionality less suitable. Some manufacturers alsooffer non-standard proprietary products providing suitable power for these applications as well, but it should be noted that since these are non-standard products, no interoperability betweendifferent brands is possible. The 802.3af standard also provides support for so-called powerclassification, which allows for a negotiation of power consumption between the PoE unit andthe devices. This means an intelligent switch can reserve sufficient, and not superfluous, powerfor the device (camera) - with the possible result that the switch could enable more PoE outputs.

PoE works across standard network cabling (i.e. cat-5) to supply power directly from the data ports to which networked devices areconnected. Today, most manufacturers offer network switches with built-in PoE support. If an existing network /switch structure is inplace, customers can benefit from the same functionality by adding a so-called Midspan to the switch, which will add power to thenetwork cable. All network cameras without built-in PoE can be integrated in a PoE system using an Active Splitter.

What is the best way to manage the skillsshortage in the securityand fire industry?

Last month we reported on the potentialproblems a skills shortage could bring to thesecurity industry. Going into a ‘trade’ seems

to be an unfashionable choice with the IT sectorappearing to be taking many of the graduatesand engineers that could have previously enteredthe security sector. So what can the industry doto make it more attractive and how can yourecruit the real talent?

John Davies – TDSiFinding the right skills for yourbusiness can be a challenge, however as well as picking theright talent it is also veryfruitful to nurture fresh talentfor your company. Like most

businesses TDSi looks to recruit the right peoplefor the job, be it technical skills, wider businessneeds or administrative expertise. However it hasbecome obvious that there is a vast gulf ofuntapped talent in graduates and school-leavers,as well as more experienced people in the jobmarket and this offers a lot of opportunities to fillmany skills shortages.

We have benefitted greatly from the technicalexpertise and enthusiasm of graduates we haverecruited. We are based in Poole on the southcoast and there are a number of nearbyuniversities which specialise in engineering andscience subjects and offer a pool of well-educated and motivated graduates that bring thelatest ideas and training to a business.

Equally, we have a number of apprentices whohave left full-time education and are seekingexperience and training in a vocational direction. This is very gratifying not only because webenefit from keen young recruits and can trainthem in the real-world skills that we need, butalso because it helps young people join thebusiness world - gaining practical experience anda better understanding of not only the corebusiness or department requirements, but also ofhow the broader business world works.

To tackle the long-term skills shortage Ibelieve it is worth encouraging interest at an evenearlier stage. As well as TDSi running an ongoingWork Experience programme for local schools, this has also led me to participate in the StudentMentoring Scheme for Sixth Form students at TheBourne Academy in Bournemouth. As a mentorwe help students to develop their professional aswell as academic and life skills and to show themthe opportunities that await them. I feel thatraising the aspirations of young people will notonly benefit them, but will also help to improvethe overall calibre of young recruits on offer in thejob market.

Another area which we passionately supportis training of our existing staff. Be it sales

training, accountancy or customer service, wesupport our employees in gaining newqualifications and skills. We have been acceptedon the Growth Accelerator programme run by TheDepartment for Business, Innovation and Skills(BIS) and this provides us with matched fundingfor some of the management training we areconducting for our employees and new hires.Again this not only benefits them individually butalso adds value to our business and benefits ourcustomers through the enhancements to servicethat result.

Robert Bruce – FSJThe perception by most is thatthere are plenty of peoplelooking for work and that theyare desperate for a job. Thereality is far from this. Due tothe short term nature and fast

paced world we live in, employers are looking fora ready-made employee who is able to slotstraight into their business. Unfortunately thisperson doesn’t exist within the security industry, pertaining to the growing gap in skilled talent.

The best way to manage the problem is toretain your current staff, give your employeesreasons to stay, not leave. Research carried outby the recruitment website monster.co.ukfound that more than half of people whoare currently looking for work but arein employment want to movebecause they feel undervalued. To avoid this fromhappening, make sure tobenchmark your businessand your overalloffering against themarket andimplement a staffretention strategy. It’snot all about salary; thereis a lot moreemployeeswant totake

clear set of goals andobjectives, responsibility andthe ability to

develop their skills. If you find yourself struggling to find new

recruits, start to think outside the box andconsider what other measures could be taken inorder to find the ‘perfect’ recruit. There are anumber of people we see coming into theindustry that just need some training in order toprogress within their role. For example, an ex-military recruit can offer a variety of skills; theyjust need someone to offer them a break. If timeis invested in people, they will be able to learnand progress, turning them into capableinstallers or engineers. Alternatively, you couldrecruit an apprentice. Employing an apprenticeprovides employers with a bespoke talentpipeline for the future. The recent 100 in 100apprenticeship scheme devised by CSL Dualcomfocused on placing 100 apprenticeships in rolesacross the industry within 100 days. The schemehas resulted in more than 1,300 youngapprentices being recruited into various jobs inthe security sector.

Declan Garrett –Security InstitutePost 9/11, crime, and the fearof crime, have focusedorganisations on managingsecurity as a priority. Defendingagainst loss requires security

practitioners with the necessary skills. However, the security industry suffers from a skillsshortage. Organisations are finding it difficult torecruit skilled staff.

A lack of defined roles, competencies, andqualifications impacts on attracting the bestcandidates. Security is not viewed as a viablecareer option and lacks structured careerpathways and progression opportunities for newentrants and those already employed. There ispoor engagement in training. In many casestraining is viewed as a necessary evil. Researchindicates a large percentage of practitioners lackqualifications specific to their role.

Change may occur if industry stakeholderscome together for the common good to managethe skills shortage. Stakeholders includeprofessional bodies, educational associations, employers, and clients.

Professional bodies need to developrecruitment and training standards and maintainand enforce them. They also need to act as alearned society promoting security as anacademic discipline and develop a new body ofknowledge to support skills development.Stakeholders need to support this. Employersneed to hire qualified personnel. Clients need toensure they are not accepting lowest end bidsand expecting the highest rate service. Lowest

end bidders lack the recourses to developemployees or compensate them if profit marginsare low.

Employees need to engage in continuousprofessional development and career driven. However, clear progression routes withcompetency frameworks and qualificationsaligned to a qualification framework is requiredso they can achieve this.

Many organisations are struggling to find newrecruits who are suitably qualified. The industrycan only attract the best candidates and harnessits best talent when stakeholders come togetherand commit to participating in skillsdevelopment. For those struggling to attract findnew recruits, they need to become an employerof choice applying human resource managementstrategies to recruit and retain the best availablecandidates and harness talent.

Simon Banks – CSLDualComApprenticeships are key to therecovery of the UK’s worseningskills gap. The REC YouthEmployment guide hasreported a 90% increase in

skills shortages in the last 18 months alone. Thelargest gap has been identified as mid-sizedemployers look to fill technical and skilled jobroles, a demographic the security sectoraccommodates. Employers need to act nowbefore the gap widens, risking an over-stretch ofexisting skilled teams. Introducing youngenthusiastic individuals into an experienced teamcan increase the future performance andcompetitive edge of any business.

For as little as £8K per year, apprentices canoffer a home-grown future talent pipeline. As wellas considering what an apprentice could learnfrom an established team, employers shouldconsider what skills are absent from theirbusiness. Young people are arguably moreacquainted with new technologies and socialmedia – an area often under-exploited withinmany businesses. To get started either contactthe National Apprenticeship Portal or Skills forSecurity.

Julie Kenny – PyronixIn the UK, unemployment hasfallen to its lowest levels since2009, but companies are stillexperiencing a skills gap.Whether it is qualifiedinstallers, software

programmers, R&D engineers; companies arefinding it hard to fill the positions of skilledworkers. In a number of instances vacancies are

being filled from outside the UK in a short termfix, but this structural gap needs a long termsolution with our industry sector and governmentin partnership. In looking to address the issue ofskills in general, the government has backedseveral advertising campaigns, monetary grantsand marketing efforts to try and increase theappeal of apprenticeships, and show youngpeople that this is a valued career path. The‘traditional’ apprenticeships are still the onesthat see the most uptake: Plumbing; Plastering;Brick Laying; Electricians. However the 100 in 100Apprenticeship initiative run in the Securityindustry – and spearheaded by Simon Banks –has been extremely successful since its launchsome 3 years ago, and indeed has proved to bethe catalyst for the security industry to foster thisyoung, vibrant pool of tomorrow’s talent. However, there needs to be a concerted effortfrom government and our industry to create therelevant infrastructure to build on thismomentum. Colleges and the private sector havedeveloped opportunities for apprentices to learnthe installation trade, but there is not enoughprovision. An improvement could be made forthere to be flexible learning combined with workexperience to allow even more potential installersthe opportunity to join our industry.

Companies that invest in their people areproven to be more successful, and in my view, companies need to offer training, qualificationsand support. Without that the skills gap willcontinue to widen as companies all compete toattract the limited numbers of skilled workers inthe industry. It is very difficult for very smallorganisations with very limited resources, butmost companies with more than a handful ofemployees, can invest more in their own staff. Myadvice to those struggling to find new recruitswould be to start from within; Is there anyone inthe organisation that shows the aptitude for

learning and do they want to progress? Cansmall organisations work together toprovide an environment for one or twoyoung staff that offer both theopportunity to learn and work?Organisations in the industry can make

a positive impact on skills by managingthe talent they already have in their

organisation, identifying the people whowant to learn, and investing in them.

Investing time and money intotraining and skills for

employees will reapbenefits; increasedloyalty to the company,a happier workforceand better skills areall thingsorganisations can

benefit from. Ultimately this is a short term, localised fix to a structural problem, but this willalso create further upward momentum to helpdrive a strategic solution to the long termproblem in the security industry.

Matthew Phelps –Eaton’s SecurityBusinessWith IP becoming ever morepresent in security productsand systems, our industry isdependent upon attracting

and retaining individuals with a diverse range ofskills; typically, those skills found in ITprofessionals. Many other industries arelooking for similarly capable people, and I amnot sure we are doing enough to win that racefor talent. Unless we do more to make ourindustry more attractive to people who will driveour sector forward, show strong career andpersonal development, and hopefully create thenew security businesses of the future, we willnot realise the opportunity for us all.

We’re not alone though. Over 75% of UKbusinesses believe they’ll be severely affectedby a skills crisis in the next three years, according to a recent report by The Prince’sTrust and HSBC.

One of the main reasons this sector isexperiencing this problem is that too fewcompanies see the value in apprenticeships asa recruitment option. This again is a widespreadproblem and, according to the UKCES EmployerPerspectives Survey, 85% of employers do notoffer apprenticeships.

This is a missed opportunity - and must beaddressed if we are to even scratch the surfaceof the skills shortage problem. More must bedone to encourage employers to considertaking on apprentices and I hope that thegovernment’s Employer Ownership of Skillsproject, and the proposed reforms to theapprenticeship system produce the desiredresults.

For companies looking for new recruits, thedecision to take on an apprentice can be adifficult one. Some perceive it is as costprohibitive, or believe the process is toobureaucratic, or that there aren’t any relevantapprentice frameworks for their business.Others feel that the early stage of economicrecovery is a risky time to commit to anapprenticeship scheme.

However, despite these issues businesses ofall sizes should consider the real and long-termvalue of apprenticeships – they are a great wayto fill skills gaps, increase productivity, anddevelop the loyal and competent workforcecompanies need to be competitive.

My advice to thosestruggling to find newrecruits would be tostart from within; Isthere anyone in theorganisation thatshows the aptitude forlearning and do theywant to progress?

PSI PEOPLE

Do you use a distributor or buy direct frommanufacturers?Over the years we’ve developed a very closeworking relationship with Videcon and we’re nowthe biggest installer of their Concept Pro CCTVrange in the country. Our new partnership withAvigilon means we buy their products directlyfrom Vancouver and we have a similar relationshipwith other manufacturers we work with.

Is third party accreditation beneficial toyou?Third party accreditation introduces anunnecessary tax to installers applying forcontracts. Many utility companies now acquiresecurity solutions through a third party whichmeans they avoid employing in-house staff todeal with the security set-up. When companiesoutsource security contracts to a third party, suppliers have to pay a fee to tender, and itbecomes more about who can pay rather thanwho can do the job well.

There also seems to be a strong focus onwhether the security company tendering can tickall the health and safety boxes, rather thandeliver the best service. External agencies areoften more concerned about covering their ownback rather than delivering the most effective endresult.

I personally think third party accreditation is alazy and exclusive way of procuring securitycontracts. It isn’t good for competition in thesecurity industry because competitive, growingand innovative security companies will not beable to compete with the larger, more establishedbusinesses if the emphasis remains on who canafford the fees needed to apply.

What would be a typical project for you?A typical job for us would be a commercial jobwith around 32 cameras, but they varyenormously considering the majority of ourinstallations are bespoke designs that we createto meet the client’s needs.

One of our recent projects was the design andimplementation of an HD-IP system with 198cameras to cover the interior, the exterior and theperimeter fencing of a retail distribution centre.

The system integrated Avigilon PT2 cameraswith Concept Pro’s NVRs and we worked closelywith data and fibre specialists to ensure thenetwork infrastructures delivered completely. Weincorporated Cisco switches to make sure thesystem data all came to one point - despite thenetwork size and amount of data being collectedand compressed. If the switch isn’t correct theplayback slows down and the latency (time delay)of footage increases. We always think that a finalsystem is only as good as its weakest point.

Do you think there is a skills shortage inthe industry? Any trouble recruitinginstallers? As we come out of a recession, well-trained, goodemployees are in high demand so the cost ofquality installers, contractors and specialists isrising. In order to maintain best practice weprioritise training our existing team in partnershipwith manufacturers, which keeps them up to speedand progresses them on to the next level.

We have recently partnered with NorthAmerican manufacturer Avigilon, who offer HDnetwork video management software, megapixelcameras and access control products. They arecoming to visit the Hadrian team for some trainingin the next few months.

Our partnerships with Mobotix and Boschmean we will have similar sessions with themlater this year, ensuring our installers have themost up-to-date knowledge on the equipmentthey’re using.

Like every business we run the risk of investingmoney in training staff that may then decide toleave us. But without CPD, we would be leftbehind, so we place importance on it throughoutour annual calendar.

As CCTV installation becomes more and moreabout data management and video analytics, being up-to-date on manufacturer’s products, uses, and features makes our knowledgeinvaluable to clients.

Are there any common requests fromcustomers that give you problems? Clients sometimes expect you to be everywhereand anywhere at short notice, but such is thenature of the modern world. We recentlyconsidered hiring a chopper to get the wholeteam somewhere for a job - we always find a wayto make things work!

We also have to manage clients’ expectationsof what the technology we install can do. Someassume a top of the range CCTV camera can coverall directions at one time, and others believe themost expensive system works for everything.

It is sometimes hard to explain what the

capabilities of our systems are to a CCTV novice, but that is where our years of experience in theindustry come in handy.

What is the security industry’s biggestmyth?ONVIF (Open Network Video Interface Forum)compliance is supposed to make cameras andsystems compatible, but it doesn’t always work.Manufacturers who supply SDKs (SoftwareDevelopment Kits) are the way forward in myopinion.

For our end users, the biggest myth is thatCCTV is very expensive. Most of our installationspay for themselves within only a few months, soclients can see a return on their investment quitequickly.

What would make your job easier? If manufacturers delivered products that do whatthey say they do, that would make everythingmuch easier. Many manufacturers includeadditional features to position themselves abovecompetitors, but they need to get the basics rightfirst.

Will England ever win the football WorldCup again? No

If you won £25,000 what would you do with it?There’s a horse running next Saturday...

With no clear idea on what he could do tofulfil his potential, but knowing that hehad an aptitude for all things practical,

Craig joined an independent company whichinstalled TV aerials and Sky satellite dishes. Thecompany also dabbled in CCTV which Craigfound particularly interesting. “I enjoyed beinginvolved in the process of trying to understandexactly what the customer was trying to achievefrom CCTV in order for us to be able torecommend the best combination of camerasand recording equipment which would be fit forpurpose,” said Craig.

It soon became apparent to Craig that theelectronic security industry could provide himwith the opportunity to prosper and he joined asmall company in the West Midlands whichspecialised in the installation of CCTV, intruderand fire alarm systems.

It was whilst he was at the West Midlandscompany that Craig’s appetite for learningaccelerated. “During my five years there as aninstallation and service engineer, I gainedconsiderable practical hands-on experience, butit became obvious that I needed to take onboard a lot more knowledge so that I could fullyunderstand what was needed to ensure that asecurity solution met, if not exceeded, theclient’s expectations.”

Entirely at his own cost and in his own time,Craig enrolled on a number of Tavcom trainingcourses covering a wide range of subjectsincluding Installation and Maintenance ofIntruder and Hold up Alarms, Principles of CCTV,and CCTV Installation. Craig completed all of theBTEC accredited courses during 2008 atprecisely the time that he had the opportunityto further progress his career by joining a newlyformed Technical Design division of ADT. “Itwas here that I was able to put what I had learnton the Tavcom courses to good use and Irealised that I am at my best when I am

interacting with clients as to how they can getthe best out of their investment in a securitysystem.” Craig’s abilities were quicklyrecognised within ADT and he was selected tobe part of a major projects team which wasresponsible for the design of large and complexmulti-sited projects.

In 2011 and once again at his own cost, Craigenrolled on two further Tavcom BTEC accreditedcourses. “I wanted to fill in what I regarded asimportant gaps in my knowledge and I knewfrom my previous experiences working withTavcom that I would get extremely good valuefrom their Practical Internet Protocol andPractical Access Control courses,” said Craig.

“The completion of these two coursesenabled me to accumulate enough points togain an internationally recognised IntegratedSystems Diploma, and gave me the confidenceto think about implementing a long heldambition to establish my own consultancy.

Craig fulfilled that ambition in February 2014when he set up SEF Consultancy(www.sefconsultancy.co.uk), an independentmulti-disciplined consultancy offering a widerange of specialist services from the surveyingand specifying of security systems for smalloffice, retail and residential environments, through to providing a complete projectmanagement service for multi-million poundtender based projects.

Craig is looking forward to the future with ahigh degree of optimism. “I am pleased to saythat I am receiving enquiries on a daily basis formy services. The good news is that there is noshortage of companies and organisations of allshapes and sizes who see the value in retainingthe services of an independent consultant who, with the benefit of acquiring professionalqualifications as well as hands-on experience, isable to provide expert, objective advice onsecurity system best practice.”

Commenting on Craig’s success, PaulTennent, Managing Director of Tavcom said: “Akey objective of providing professional trainingcourses for our clients is to help them realisetheir full potential. We are therefore proud thatthe knowledge that our expert tutors haveimparted to Craig has been put to such gooduse.”

ConnectionsHello again

Well hopefully that’s the last of the storms and the increased levels ofalarm and telephone calls that always accompanies such activity.Normally storms are pre-empted by emergency services withdrawingattendance in preparation for wider scale emergency responserequirements, quickly followed by key holders refusing to attend asthey have decided to drink copious quantities of alcohol and hunkerdown to get off key holder duties!

Of course all of this adds to dispatch times as we are deniedemergency service attendance and then we cycle through the keyholders trying to get someone to attend. This is then followed up bythe key holder calling us back requesting a call out engineer and thencalling us back again (and again) because he hasn’t arrived orcontacted them. For us it’s quite surprising when it is known there is astorm brewing that alarm installers don’t lay on extra callout staff fortheir customers, especially as there is an expectation that we aremanning every available operating position answering phones anddispatching on alarms, which we do.

It is therefore not surprising that ARC’s are moving toward either atotally automated service, or a selective automated service, for non-core alarm signalling. Today’s standards require an enormous amountof additional signalling to be sent to the ARC over and aboveunconfirmed & confirmed alarms, personal attack and fire. Duringadverse weather who actually needs to know at 3am that if theyswitch on their lights they won’t work? Do zone omits, fail to tests, low batteries, mains fails, single path comms fails, early to open, lateto open, fail to close, GSM low and a myriad of other technical alarmsreally require operator intervention?

Back in 1983 when we started, we received low battery, burglary, personal attack and very rarely fire and open & close signalling, albeitthe false alarm rate was 2.9 per system per year! Monitoring fees werealso £49 a year for two signals, £10 connection and £15 for eachadditional signal, whey hey I wonder what that would be now if it wasindex linked?

The long and the short is that ARC’s (along with the rest of the serviceindustry) are have to do a lot more for a lot less and the only way ofdoing that is to prioritise the important signals for operatorintervention, automate the rest and attack poor performing CCTVsystems, the latter being extremely labour intensive.

This is something we have been very good at over the last 30+ yearsand why, when under the cosh of adverse weather conditions weoutperform our competitors across our two centres in Manchester &Portsmouth. It’s not easy and sometimes even if we had 200 operatorsacross the network, our service would not be at normal levels, butthey are better than others. For example we use dedicated operatorsfor answering alarm company lines out of hours and we prioritisethose lines above our own.

We have been automating non mission critical signalling and drivingthe adoption of MASmobile by engineers to free up operators time todispatch on confirmed alarms and answer phones, because if you’rebeing asked to do more for less there has to be change to workingpractices to find the time.

And finally, because we are better than the rest, we are growing andattracting new business from our competitors, hence why we havetaken on additional administrators and operators.

Roll on the October hurricanes!

Bye for now

SIL2 level fire detection rangeHochiki Europe has announced theintroduction of a new fire detection range thatis independently evaluated and certified tomeet the requirements of Safety Integrity Level2 (SIL2), with respect to the IEC 61508Functional Safety ofElectrical/Electronic/Programmable ElectronicSafety-Related Systems standard.

Hochiki Europe’s SIL2 range includes smokesensors, multi-sensors, multi-heat sensors, manual call points, sounders and sounderbeacons, and a variety of detectors. Thesedevices will be of interest to those responsiblefor configuring life safety systems inhazardous environments such as the oil, gas, petrochemical, manufacturing, transport andprocess control industries.

A SIL rating applies to an entire system andis used to reduce risk and improve safetythrough a formalised and quantifiablemethodology. It does this by measuring safetysystem performance and the probability offailure on demand – a value that indicates thelikelihood of a system failing to respond to an

emergency event. There are four integritylevels associated with SIL, in ratings 1-4. Thehigher the SIL level, the lower the probabilityof failure on demand and the better theperformance of the safety system. It isimportant to also note that, in the vastmajority of cases, as the SIL level increases, sodoes the complexity of the system. www.hochikieurope.com

Fire alarm management updateDrax Technology has launched an updatedversion of the AMX alarm management platform.AMX 2.17 now supports a wider range of firecontrol panels and adds many new featureenhancements.

AMX 2.17 is now Windows 8 compatible andsupports virtually all leading fire control panelswith the addition of the ADT MX/ZX, C-Tec,Kidde Vega and Morley DX Connexion systems. It provides a real-time view of the status andperformance of all connected devices andenables faults to be rapidly identified across thenetwork without having to physically check eachremote control panel. The system also allowsindividual devices to be isolated remotely in theevent of building work or other activities thatoccur in a specific zone to eliminate theincidence of false alarms.

The system’s synchronisation capabilitieshave also been enhanced to improveoperational efficiency. AMX 2.17 now allowsclocks in remote fire alarms and connecteddevices to be synchronised to ensure thatreports and event logs are more accurate. Also, when multiple AMX workstations are connected

as part of a group, they are synchronised toensure that a single data set is used to simplifyfuture reporting.www.draxtechnology.com

Hackney brewery increases securityDelta Security has installed an alarm systemfor The Five Points Brewing Co in Hackney, increasing security levels and helping tosupport the brewery management with itsongoing expansion programme.

Emmanuel Ross, Operations Manager forthe independent micro-brewery says theyneeded to be confident that the investmentsthey make to growing the business areprotected: “As well as the assurancesnecessary for our insurance company, being asmall, but growing business we needed analarm system that we could be confidentwould be reliable in protecting our facility andstock, and flexible to allow for cost-efficientupgrades when the times comes to expandfurther.”

The upgraded alarm system includes auser-friendly intruder panel that can beprogrammed to call several different key-holders; the coverage of the PIR sensors hasalso been increased to ensure all areas of thesite are protected. In line with the client’srequirement for a future-proof alarm solution, the new system is fully upgradable.

The Delta Security head office is a shortwalk from The Five Points Brewing Co and itslocality was important to Emmanuel: “Beingpart of a community is a big part of ourcompany ethos and as well, being sociallyresponsible, it is also convenient in the eventwe have any questions.

Dave Holland, Installations Manager atDelta Security is very pleased to be partneringwith a local success story: “Independentbreweries are very popular, with more andmore people caring about the providence ofwhat they eat and drink. It’s fitting that wehave been able to continue the theme andprovide good value security services so localto the brewery.”

PIRs and laser technologyeradicate false alarmsA council depot in Dudley experiencing up to 80false alarms in 45 minutes when opening everymorning, has practically eradicated the problemby reviewing the existing sensor locations anddeploying Optex laser detection technology.

The site is protected by a CCTV systemtriggered by infrared motion detection sensors, but was suffering numerous false alarms due tostaff arriving for work and congregating in frontof the building, and from wildlife along thecanal footpath that runs along two sides of theperimeter.

Historically, intruders had broken throughone of the perimeter walls and stolen centralheating boilers and piping, and also climbed upon to the roof and entered the building throughthe skylights.

Eighteen Redwall long-range passiveinfrared detectors (PIRs) were installedthroughout the car park and the perimeter ofthe building to protect the elevation of thestorage warehouse a few years ago. Theoperational needs of the site had changed butthe sensors were still in their original locationand the false alarms generated when staff werearriving to work were causing a headache foroperators at Visual Verification’s remotemonitoring centre in Timperley, Cheshire.

The location of the existing sensors neededa rethink as well as the mix of detectiontechnologies to specify to avoid staff triggeringthe system.

Replacing the traditional volumetric sensorsprotecting the building, a Redscan laserdetector has been installed on top of thebuilding in a vertical application, covering thefacade and a one-metre area from the wall, working in conjunction with two cameras.Creating a virtual wall, the laser sensor onlydetected people standing next to the buildingwall and ignored those further away. Thisresulted in the false alarm rate falling by 80%.

Heartlands Hospital chooses IP-video intercomHeartlands Hospital, Birmingham, the flagship hospital for the Heart of EnglandNHS Trust, has chosen Castel to supply an IP-video intercom solution throughoutits large modern hospital estate. Recently updated in 2000 to a 737-bed capacity, the hospital is still being developed with new and upgraded buildings, services andsecurity systems.

System installer Lyrico recommended an external intercom solution fromCastel’s CAP IP product range to the Hospital Trust, one that could easily be addedto the hospital’s IP backbone network. The hospital required an intercom systemthat was future-proof and which had a range of intercom stations to providesolutions for different areas of the estate. A final requirement was that the solutionneeded to be able to interface seamlessly with an IP telephone system in thefuture. This made Castel’s open SIP solution using the CAP IP intercom range idealfor this particular project.

CAP IP Intercoms were installed as Help Points within the new multi-storey carpark and also at the automatic barrier gates. Two intercoms were also installed atthe goods delivery gates. All of the calls are directed to the CAP IP masterhandsets in the on-site security control room. In total, 17 audio and video intercomstations have been installed.

Gothenburg Court rules infavour of video securitySony’s video security system hascreated a more secure environment forthe Administrative Court of Appeal inGothenburg which has traditionally onlyused physical security, and is nowopting to use video security for the firsttime.

Recently, the organisation has lackedthe necessary resources to place guardsin the areas where the public is grantedaccess, which consists of severalunsupervised rooms and communalareas. Lately, incidents have occurredthat created the need for the

organisation to implement an improvedsurveillance solution. The challenge therefore, was to monitor all areas and get a completeoverview of the premises and waiting roomsaccessible by the public.

The implementation was performed by thesecurity supplier Gate Security over a five monthperiod. The complete solution consisted of severalSNC-EM630 Sony Mini Dome cameras and clientstations.

Sony’s SNC-EM630 Full HD cameras have beenintegrated with the Court’s security alarm system, which prompts alarms in the case of any faults inthe CCTV equipment (e.g. if a camera gets covered

or obstructed). Any alerts are sent directly to thesecurity staff and alarm centre, ensuring that thesolution provides full security for both employeesand visitors alike.

The implementation of the new security systemwas completed within the set time schedule andbudget. The new system meets every demand setby The Swedish National Courts Administrationand The Administrative Court of Appeal itself. GateSecurity will continue to maintain the system withregular checks twice a yearand whenever needed.

“Previously we’ve had problems with variousangles, nooks and pillars in the premises, as ourreception staff had problems seeing some publicareas. But the newly installed security solutionpractically covers the entire premise,” saidMagnus Corneskog, Technology Specialist at theSecurity and Service Department at The SwedishNational Courts Administration.

“The courts need to handle cases efficientlyand with legal certainty. Therefore it’s veryimportant that the working environment feelssecure for both its staff and its visitors. Thecamera surveillance equipment has a veryimportant role here. Not only does it work toprotect individuals and collateral, but it alsoworks as a deterrent that minimises unwarrantedbehaviour within the courts,” said MagnusCorneskog, Technology Specialist at the Securityand Service Department at The Swedish NationalCourts Administration.

Collaboration leads to CCTV vansTogether with Securitas, Dallmeier has developeda surveillance concept in which vans have beenfitted with video security equipment. Many ofthese versatile CCTV vans are already on the roadsthroughout the UK and Ireland, in the service ofthe retailer Marks & Spencer as well as otheroperators.

Many potential offenders are discouraged by aclearly visible video system, so illegal activitiescan often be prevented before they are evencommitted. If an incident should take place, however, CCTV systems can be used to provide anaccurate reconstruction of the sequence of eventsand to identify the individuals involved. Butsuitable mounting sites are not always availableat the locations where video systems are needed.Or it is not worthwhile to set up a permanentinstallation because the need for heightenedsecurity only exists at certain times. Now there isa solution for these situations: CCTV vans. Thesevans can be deployed for use at precisely the timeand place where they are needed. Dallmeier andSecuritas have developed and successfullyimplemented this concept together.

Each CCTV van is equipped with four highdefinition dome cameras, which are mounted onthe four sides of the van. The vehicles also carry amobile PTZ camera mounted on a hydraulic mastthat can be extended to a height of 15m. The PTZcamera is equipped with a 20x optical zoom, enabling more distant objects to be observed indetail as well.

The images from the cameras are recorded on aVideoNetBox, which is built into the van withminimum space requirement. The PTZ camerascan be controlled via a laptop runningmanagement software from Dallmeier, which alsoallows live images and recordings to be analysedconveniently inside the van itself. Remote analysiscan also be carried out from anywhere in the UK orIreland via a 3G network. And sequences ofinterest can also be downloaded remotely. In thisrespect, the PRemote-HD function – a routinedeveloped by Dallmeier with which HDTV streamscan be displayed even with low bandwidths – isvery useful.

The capability of analysing via iPhone or iPad,made possible by the “Dallmeier Mobile VideoCenter” iPhone app, affords even greater mobilityand flexibility. Special transcoding is used tooptimise the image data for the iPhone and at thesame time ensure a high frame rate. The appincludes the intuitive operation typical foriPhones, including multitouch zoom. Theindividual cameras are displayed in a list withpreview images for maximum viewing efficiency.

Whether as an extension for a permanentlyinstalled video system or as a standalone system, the CCTV vans have already proven their value inmany situations. At concerts or demonstrations, incar parks or to prevent the theft of copper fromrailway and power supply facilities: the CCTV vansserve as an effective deterrent and provideinvaluable help in the investigation of incidents.

Nationwide improves scanningwith X-Ray systemTotalpost Services has supplied a mail andparcel X-Ray security screening device into oneof Nationwide’s flagship processing centres.Supplied into the centre in Swindon, themachine has been used primarily for screeningincoming mail as the centre receives around20,000 items of mail per day.

Nationwide previously used a cabinet style

security screener but have upgraded to thisAstrophysics XIS 6040 conveyor X-Ray machinein order to enable operators to see more clearlythe contents of incoming mail. Additionallybecause it is a conveyor style machine it hasincreased screening efficiency.

Commenting on the screening ability of themachine James Carter, Operations TeamManager, of Nationwide said: “The imagery ofthe screened items is far clearer than ourprevious machine - this gives staff peace of

mind when dealing withlarge volumes of mail.”

The processing teamhas also identified asecondary use for the X-Ray screener and nowuse it for screeningpaperwork for metal, mainly staples beforeputting items throughtheir scanningequipment. This is aprocess that waspreviously done by handand enables them toincrease the longevity ofthe scanning equipment.

Italian retailerbenefits from EASsolutionCheckpoint Systems hasannounced that thehypermarket retailer Bennethas completed the roll outof electronic articlesurveillance (EAS) lossprevention solutions in theirstores in Italy. The solutioninvolves the installation of1,000 P20 EAS antennasfrom Checkpoint’s EVOLVEsolutions – as well as radiofrequency (RF) tags, Alphahigh-theft solutions andpoint-of-sale deactivators –in addition to the rollout of

an RF source-tagging programme aimed atincreasing on-shelf availability, improving openmerchandising while reducing labour costs andinventory shrink.

As part of the partnership, EAS labels will beapplied to the merchandise during themanufacturing process, resulting in the itemsarriving in-store shelf-ready. This enables storeassociates to focus on customer-centric activitiesrather than attaching security tags, resulting in

increased sales and enhancing the shoppingexperience.

The programme is being run throughCheckpoint’s dedicated Source Tagging EvaluationCentre, which considers technical, packaging andsupply chain requirements when recommendingthe application of the most suitable EAS labels tothe different types of merchandise.

The P20 antenna offers a slim profile withimproved visual impact at point of sale and strongdetection capabilities. The model is also part ofCheckpoint’s ECO range, which helps to reduceenergy consumption by up to 40% compared withprevious models.

Luigi Forgione, a Director of the Bennet Group, said: “We are delighted with the final installationand look forward to extending our collaborationwith Checkpoint, a company which shares ourgoals of being at the forefront of the retailindustry by offering the greatest variety ofproducts, ensuring our stores’ security, in a new, modern and welcoming manner.”

Per Levin, President and Chief Sales Office forMerchandise Availability Solutions for CheckpointSystems, added: “ Item level EAS protectionprograms deliver a strong and proven ROI, andBennet is now joining a growing number ofretailers around the world who are exploiting thisoption much harder to increase sales and profitsin this still subdued economic environment.”

New access control system forIrish Ferries911 Security Systems has installed doorcontrollers, proximity readers and cards fromAccess Control Technology (ACT) as part of amarine access control solution with 3,500 users. Aunified system is operating internationally across40 doors, with ferry staff at the ports of Dublin,Republic of Ireland, and Cherbourg, France, usingtheir access control cards in both countries.

The equipment is at buildings run by IrishFerries, and crew with appropriate access rightscan simply present their credentials at the ferrycompany’s facilities in Ireland and France.

The access control system relies on ACTpro1030e proximity readers and ACTpro 4000 doorcontrollers. The readers are slim-line (a concern atany transport hub where space is limited) andthey support Wiegand/Clock-and-Data output.Crucially, the readers’ IP67 rating offers protectionagainst ingress of water, salt and othercontaminants likely to be found at a port.

The harbour terminals are also using ACTpro4000 two-door controllers which are designed forhigh-traffic volumes where changes to thecardholder database are a regular occurrence.Networkable up to 4,000 doors via door stations, the ACTpro 4000 can manage up to 60,000 users. These controllers excel in data reading and

encoding which allow ACT’s control software tofunction alongside an organisation’s corepersonnel/enrolment system.

ACT’s access control management software isgiving Irish Ferries a system with a hierarchy ofaccess rights for staff members according to jobprofile. The database allows distinctions to bemade between crew responsibilities, areas ofonboard and land-based activity as well as basiccriteria such as seniority and likely shift patterns.User data and access privileges are recorded onACTProx Duo Cards which can be used on aproximity or mag stripe basis.

Paul Keegan, Operations and Sales Manager at911 Security Systems, said: “Timed zones androle-specific access groups have been set up inboth Dublin and Cherbourg with distinctionsbeing made between office areas, workshops andthe secure side of the port which includesturnstiles. ACT’s anti-passback measures giveadditional protection and all the controllers haveindividual IP addresses.”

He continued: “In addition to securing the twoharbour sites, the end-user can generate reportson staff movements across vast quayside areas aswell as the logistics of employee activity in thepassenger terminals. There is potential for usingthese movement reports for time and attendancepurposes.”
