Beauty P. Baldwin First black female school superintendent in Georgia

Beauty P. Baldwin knew at a young age that education was her future. “I wanted to be a math teacher since the third grade,” she said. “I loved math so much I thrived off of helping other kids love it too.” Even though John Lewis High School in Ellaville, Georgia, only went as far as trigonometry, the young Miss Poole drank up those facts, figures and algorithms.

She went on to become the first black

female school superintendent in

Georgia at a time when neither blacks

nor women had federal mandates en-

suring equal treatment. Her contribu-

tions in schoolhouses as well as

throughout Gwinnett County, her

adopted home, make her a shining

example of selflessness.

In June 1984, she was appointed su-perintendent of Buford Schools by a unanimous vote by an all-white board. “I was shocked,” she said. “I’d beat-en out a hometown boy who I thought had been a shoo-in.” “I had the pleasure of serving as board chair when we appointed Beau-ty as superintendent,” said Phillip Beard, chair of the Buford City Schools Board of Education. “Beauty was an incredible leader and pos-sessed tremendous passion for the Buford community and our children. On a personal level, she has been a great friend that I immensely respect. Despite humble beginnings, she has left an amazing legacy not only in Buford but throughout our county and state.” And even after retiring in 1994 from Buford City Schools, she’s remained active in education as well as com-munity service. Three years later, she helped establish Hopewell Christian Academy, where she served as ad-ministrator for 16 years. That facility became North Metro Academy of Per-forming Arts, a Gwinnett County charter school, in June 2014. Baldwin currently serves as board chair there. In 2016, Gwinnett County named an elementary school after her. Baldwin Elementary School, in Nor-cross, initially had 1,150 students in 51 classrooms. A unique feature of the school is its Dual Language Im-mersion Program, where students

Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is a groundbreaking congresswoman.

Not only is she the senior US Representative from Florida,

but she is also the first Latina elected to the US Congress,

and the first Republican in congress to publicly support the

passage of the marriage equality act. She believes that edu-

cation is “a lifelong journey,” and has emphasized the im-

portance for education throughout her career.

Her education inspired her to become a teacher, and later the principal of Eastern Academy in Hialeah, Florida. During her time as a teacher and principal, Ros-Lehtinen was inspired to seek public office by the parents of her students. She wanted to “fight on their behalf for a stronger educational system, lower taxes, and a brighter economic future.” She was elect-ed as to the Florida State House of Representatives in 1982, and to the Florida Senate in 1986. She is the first Hispanic woman in to serve in either body. During her time in the Flori-da State House of Representatives and the state Senate, she worked to ensure that over one- million Floridians were able to send their children to college, by introducing the Florida Prepaid College program, which helps students have tuition to attend college. As a Congresswoman, Ros- Lehtinen sup-ported legislation to allow a wider range of students to have access to Federal financial aid. She also advocates for veter-ans to have access to a college education when they return from tours of duty.

Ros-Lehtinen broke another barrier in 1989 when she became

the first Hispanic woman elected to Congress. During her

campaign, Democrat Gerald F. Richman used the slogan,

“This is an American seat,” which constituents, especially

Cuban-Americans viewed as a thinly veiled, racist rallying cry

against Cubans. This campaign tactic backfired for Richman,

and Ros-Lehtinen won the election. She did not know that

she had broken this barrier until her interview with Katie

Couric on the Today Show. When Couric asked her how she

felt about being the first Hispanic woman in Congress, Ros-

Lehtinen replied, “Wow, I guess it feels good!” Since her first

election in 1989, Ros-Lehtinen has continued to break barri-

ers.

Sheikh Hasina Wazed (Bengali: শেখ হাসিনা ওযাজেদ; English: /ˈʃeɪk həˈsiːnə/, SHAYK hə-SEE-nə; born 28 September 1947) is a Bangladeshi poli-tician serving as the 10th Prime Minister of Bangla-desh, having held the office since January 2009. She is the longest serving prime minister in the his-

tory of Bangladesh.

She is the daughter of Bangladesh's first Presi-dent Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. Her political career has spanned more than four decades. She previ-ously served as opposition leader from 1986 to 1990 and from 1991 to 1995, as Prime Minister from 1996 to 2001, and has been leading the Bangladesh Awami League since 1981. In 2008, she returned as Prime Minister with a landslide vic-tory. In January 2014, she became Prime Minis-ter for a third term in an unopposed election, in an election boycotted by the opposition and criticized by international observers. She won a fourth term in December 2018, following an election marred with violence and criticized by the opposition as be-

ing rigged.

Hasina is considered one of the most powerful women in the world, ranking 26th on Forbes' list of The World's 100 Most Powerful Women in 2018 and 30th in 2017.

Sheikh Hasina has also made her

room in the list of top 100 Global Thinkers of the present decade as the famous US-based Foreign Policy journal came up with a register of worldwide thinkers. She is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders, an International network of current

and former women presidents and prime ministers.

Her tenure as Prime Minister has been marred by several scandals and criticized for authoritarian practices. Scandals under her time include: Padma Bridge Scandal, Hallmark-Sonali Bank Scam, Share market Scandal, Rana Plaza collapse, and Bangladesh road safety protests 2018. She has also been praised for economic growth under her

tenure.

The New York Mets and Delta Air Lines partnered on the Ya Gotta Read! program to help foster a love of reading in students. More than 5,500 stu-dents at nine elementary schools in Queens partic-ipated in the program.

Our scholars participated on February 8th and the average is 3,000 minutes read by individual schol-ars and total school over 60,000 minutes read!!

Great job well done!!
