    NO. 1

    Air New

    Guinea Complex

    up for

    sale

    in

    Madang,

    Papua

    New

    Guinea

    Temporary

    Headquarters

    in Papua

    David

    Pryor,

    PBT

    missionary

    in Papua

    New Guinea, reports that

    a

    complex

    of

    house s has

    been

    rented in

    Madang city to

serve as PBT's headquarters until more

    p erm an en t a rra ng em en ts c an b e m ad e.

There are six houses plus warehouses

    in

    th e

    complex.

David writes that with th e

    coming

    of

    so

    many

    PBT

    missionar ies to

Papua, finding this complex came none

    to o s o o n

However, this is only a rental,

    and

    tem

    porary, arrangement.

    Th e

    owner, which

    happens to

    be Air

    New

    Guinea, th e

    national

    airlines,

    may

    decide

    to

    at

    any t ime

    no t

    r en t ou t this

    complex

    any

    longer. At

    which

    time

    PBT

    would

    be headquar ter less

    again.

    There

    is

    one bright spot

    in this,

    though.

    The

complex is up fo r sale PBT is

    negotiating

    with Air

    New

    Guinea to

    purchase t he complex ,

    but th is

    has just

    begun, so

    we have nothing

    def in it e t o

    report

    at

this writing on t he progress

    of the

    negotiation

    except

    for

    th e price. The

    complex ha s a

    selling

    price of U S

    165,000.

    David Pryor

    also

    writes that, should PBT

    b e able

    to

    buy this property,

    it will

    be

    a

    good

    base from

    which to

    reach

    into th e

    minority language groups of

    th e

    surroun

    ding

    area

    with the translatedWord of God.

    And,

because it is close to these

    language

    groups,

th e complex will provide a con

    venient location

    in

    which to

    do linguistic

    analysi s, t ransla tion

    an d

    production

    of

    literary material.

    Will PBT be

    able

    to

    buy

    th e complex? It

    is

to o early to say. But, we

    are

    praying

    that

God will open up th e

    opportunity

    to do so .

    Please, p ray

    with

    us concerning this

    op

    portunity also.

    We

    will soon let you know

    whether

    PBT

    can

    bu y

    th e

    property.

    (cont. from

    front

    page)

    After

    t r ave l ing

    up

    r i ve r fo r for ty- f ive

    minutes ,

    we

    got out

    of

    the boat and began

hiking through the jungle, I began

    perspi r

i ng p ro fu s el y, and with in

    ha l f an hour

    my

    clothes were soaked, and

    the perspi rat ion

    was

    s t i l l

    pouring

    down my face, arms, and

    legs . Within

an hour and a half , lass of

    body f l u id had me

    exhausted.

    I was

    humi l i

    ated

    and

    disgusted. I knew I was

    in shape,

    but

    when I

    sa t

    down

    to

    r es t ,

    I knew I

    had

    to

    stay

    there

    a while. I took

    o ff

    my pack and

    j u s t sa t there ,

    using

    what

    l i t t l e

    energy I

    had l e f t to brush away

    the mosquitoes.

    I

    kept thinking I

    only

    needed a l i t t l e

    res t ,

    but

    res t wasn*t making

    any

    difference. y

    strength was

    gone,

so I prayed fo r enough

    strength

    to

    make

it to the next vi l lage .

    As

it turned out, that was how it was to be fo r

    the entire survey.

Xir pac e slowed considerable, and

    it

    be

    came

    i^^)erative

    to

    stop

    more frequently to

    r e s t . Though

    exhausted,

    I f e l t very close

to God. I was to ta l ly dependent on Him fo r

    strength.

    We

were behind schedule, but a t

    least

    I made it to each

    vil lage.

    The follo f^

    ing df^

    brought

    an even

    greater t r ia l

    A man from one

    of

    the villages volunteer

ed to guide us to the

    next village

    which was

    supposedly only minutes

    away.

    He

    took us

    on a t r a i l tha t went up

    and

    down and a l l

    around.

    After an

    hour and US minutes of

    hiking, I knew I was in t rouble .

    We came

    t o

    a little s h e l t e r someone had

    bui l t for

    shade aid

cooking, so I sa t down.

    I was

    feeling

    fa int ,

    nauseous,

    and iny arms

    were

    going

    numb and beginning

    to

    t i ng le . I

    layed down

    and

    elevated

    vy

    feet which helped

some. I had again lost a

    lo t

    of body f luid,

and it seemed ugr whole body was

    crying

    for

scmething to drink. I told t he f el lows , and

they decided tha t my brother John should

s tay with me and oxir guide and the Austrar-

l ian missionary would go on to

    the

    village

    and send

    some coconuts

    back fo r

    me

    to

    ea t

    and drink. While

    they

    were

    gone I there

    thinking tha t

    i f I was going to

    get out

    of

    that

    jungle,

    it would have

    to

    be by helicop

    t e r But

    a f t e r

    some

    coconut

    meat

    and

    milk

and some res t I was able to go on -

    but

    not

to the next vi l lage . They

    decided

    to

    s t a r t

back home instead of going deeper into the

    jungle. At

    that

    point, I didn t

    feel

    l ike

    arguing 1

    our

    SHAERAN'S SHAKINGS

    Prayers For Learning

    Giri

    & Pidgin

We have been here nine months and each

    month brings more joy, peace, and happiness;

    in the

    work God

    has called us here to

    do

    Because

    of

    Daranpul

    we

    have been

    given

    a

    bi

head start in the language, but there are n

    short

    cuts to learning a

    language. I t

    take^

many hours of listening, mimicking, tracking,

analyzing, and most inpor tant ly , talk ing

    Again

    we

    need your prayers. \ie

    are s t i l l

    learning Pidgin,

    too. We

    can

    carry

    on a

    conversation with

    anyone in

    Pidgin, but i t

    is

    s t i l l

    at

    a simple

    level ,

    and

    we

    need a

    major grasp of the

    language. That vjill give

us a bilingual opportunity to learn Giri

    once

    we

    are in the vil lage.

    School

    Days

    Just

    a note

    about John

    and Amy. They are

    both growing

    every

    day as a l l children have

    a way of doing. They

    both

    s t i l l enjoy

    cor

    respondence school

    even though

    the work load

    seems quite hard a t

    times, but

    they

    really

miss going to s choo l wit h other children.

    Since

    we told

    our

    people we would be

    learn

    ing their

    language children and adults are

    here quite

    often

    to visi t us,

    so at least

    they

    have a few children to

    play

    with.

    John had an

    art icle

    he

    had

    written

    pub

    lished in the

    Outpost ,

    his

    sishool magazine

    and was

    very pleased

    about

    that .

    He stays

    busy reading everything in

    sight,

    drying

    dishes, taking

    care of

    the trash,

    and raking

and helping around the complex. Amy is a l

    ways

    busy plsgringdalls

    and having tea pai>

    t i es . I t i s

    rare

    to see

    her

    without

    her

    most

    delightful

    and entertaining kit ten. The

    second one is a

    Dusty ,

    too.

    A NOTE OF EXPLANATION

    Once

    have

    we

    HOUSE MOVING?

    Have

    Tha t s what

    David

preceded by painstaking hours of hunt ing

    to

    be exchanged for 48 pieces

    of

    and

    the pr ice

    adjusted accordingly;

thinking we were done only to discover we

    needed one

    more

    r idge cap

    and

    two more

    The
