Interview With the Exhibition
Proximal Rounds (PR) and Interviewer (I)
I: Good afternoon. Thanks for coming!PR: Thanks for having us.I: Let’s jump right in- what’s with the table and chairs?PR: Well, tables are surfaces where people work on things, share
things, eat, drink, speak. We have a table based on the hope thatpeople will use it here in the art gallery.I: So, you’re opening up this table to be used by people who visitthe exhibition. What should they do, how should they use it?PR: The table has been surrounded by artwork, and visitors are
invited to investigate the works at the table. For instance, aperson could choose to listen to a cassette tape with another person while looking through a comic book together. The idea isto promote an experience with the works that is a tactile, visual,
and aural.I: What is the connection between all of these sculptures, books,

Interview With the Exhibition II
We (Proximal Rounds) are the unique scenario of these objectsplaced in proximity with one another. This is our way of enlarging the “round”- of furthering the ripples created by theseobjects. Collectively, their complexities are greater. Taken in
hand, together, the objects contribute to a Proximal Round thatshifts meaning fluidly as they are handled by each new group of unique people who take a seat at the table.I: Is any of this for sale?PR: No. All objects are on loan from their creators, and will bereturned to their bedrooms, mantles, bookshelves and studioswhen the show ends.I: Thank you for taking the time to speak with me today.PR: It was our pleasure.

they will take a seat at the table and make some time to be with the artwork, to see itas well as touch it, listen to it, read it, feel it. The exhibition deals with boundaries, preciousness, trust, investigation, archiving, common ground and connectionsbetween artists locally, collaboration, friendship, community, relaxation, comfort,

The table was meant to act as central node for the people and materials, a place to relax andconnect thought threads and talk threads and thing threads. Anything could be taken from theshelves and brought to the table for closer investigation, except for things that were nailed to the
walls. I found that leaving objects out on the table as an "example" of how the table was meant to beused was helpful for getting people to participate in the exhibition.

This table cloth was made specifically for the exhibition by Lisa Lux, Britt Barisko and I. Theembroidered text reads "We are close enough to see each other's eyes" and "(get close"). Belowthis (not pictured) more text reads "What are the products of proximity?" The table cloth at once
poses a question about collaboration "in proximity" and an answer: the cloth itself is a product of proximity.

This corner of the space held Sea Games, an interactive work by Emily Monen, an antique lamp lent to me byLisa Lux, a bench I found on a street corner, and a print by Charlotte Procter of a still from Maya Deren's
iconicMeshes of the Afternoon.

This corner's shelf and TV invited visitors to listen to music on the walkmen or take a seat on the cushions infront of the TV, which played either a stop animation by Wagner Israel Cilio, or a VHS by Huskernaut. Thetapes made specifically for the exhibition were by Cilio, David Ozinga, Mixtape Club. This media aspect
hoped to provide experiences with audio and moving image, hopefully involving more of the visitor's sensesin the experience of Proximal Rounds.

These two images reflect the participatory nature of the exhibition: a visitor sits at the table, enjoying ahandmade book, and another writes in the provided notebook. Sigh. What beauty.
