Raising the bar in Bicol’s hotel industry

Naga Regent Hotel and Convention Center started its operation in December 2002 with only 12 rooms for guests, but it continues to expand year after that the hotel now offers a total of 68 rooms, with the 6 VIP suites opened only in the 3rd quarter of 2008. The suites were accorded a 5-star status for the impeccable amenities that it offers- in-room safe; bath tub; a heavenly bed; a mini-bar and a connecting door to the adjacent room which is ideal for families wanting to check their brood.

Indeed, Naga Regent Hotel and Convention Center has raised the bar in Bicol’s hotel industry. It has set a benchmark for excellent service and competitive pricing, and committed itself to meet the needs of its roster of clientele, which includes expatriates, local and foreign tourists, businessmen and even families who just want to relax and spend some precious time bonding.

At Naga Regent Hotel and Convention Center, guests have a choice- from budget-friendly rooms to modestly-priced newly-refurbished luxurious VIP suites that offer impeccable comfort and pampering with its array of amenities like cable televisions, individually-controlled air-con system, Wi-Fi connection, hot and cold shower, an orthopedic bed to make for maximum comfort, just to mention a few.

Putting a new dimension to the Regent experience, dormitory-type rooms are also offered-the first of its kind in the city. Affordably-priced, the dormitory-type rooms can accommodate up to 25 persons. The very friendly pricing is indeed a big come-on for the budget-conscious and those traveling in big groups.

TOURIST SPOTS

Mount Isarog

A traveller arriving to Naga by land or by air will always be greeted by the sight of a dormant volcano rising from the plains of Bicol Region. Mt. Isarog’s imposing and seemingly frightening silhouette dwarf Naga and surrounding towns, the same communities it sustains through the abundance of water in its many rivers, streams, and waterfalls.

Approaching Naga, a traveller can expect to see the mountain growing larger and larger until it dominates much of the Eastern sky. In fact, sunlight reaches Naga much later than other towns because of Mt. Isarog’s location on the eastern part of the Bicol peninsula. Visitors to the city often say that you have not experienced the Naga way of life if one has not witnessed the sun peeking from behind Mt. Isarog in the early dawn lights. Like an apparition appearing from the dark, the mountain basks in the light of the early morning sun, appearing larger than it really is.

At more than 5,000 feet above sea level, Mt. Isarog is a magnet for mountain climbers and nature trekkers alike. Conservationists and nature lovers love the mountain for its rich biodiversity and the abundance of endemic species. Declared as a national park in 1934, Mt. Isarog has been fortunate to enjoy conservation and protection efforts of Bicolanos living at its foot. This has made the park a protected area frequented by botanists, zoologists, and many other scientists.

Even Western scientists have returned time and time again to Mt. Isarog to study its lush mossy forests and unique wildlife. Despite the difficult and often challenging trails, thousands of mountain climbers arrive almost daily to the park’s entrance, with accredited trail guides leading the way to its towering peak and giant crater. Adventurers longing for a good challenge will find the ascent rewarding. Giant moss-covered trees and the sound of wild birds and animals fill the air from the start of the climb until the conquest of the peak.

In the afternoon, Mt. Isarog basks in golden sunlight, its larger waterfalls glistening under the sun. The forest canopy also casts shadows, making the slopes appear undulating and giving the slopes a seemingly continuous texture of miniature trees.

The many ravines and crevices appear as though carved from a solid block of stone. One can even imagine the hand of God grasping the base of Mt. Isarog and gouging its slopes upward.

With more than 10,000 hectares of pristine forests, streams, and valleys, the Mt. Isarog national park is home to a wide range of endemic animals like the Isolated Mountain Frog, the rare Isarog Shrew Rat, the smaller Isarog Shrew Mouse, several species of snakes, river crabs. Conservation efforts have also resulted in reported sightings of the endangered Philippine Eagle which used to be called “Monkey-eating Eagle” and is the second-largest bird of prey in the world.

From the peak of Mt. Isarog, mountain conquerors can see the entire province of Camarines Sur as well as the mountain ranges of Camarines Norte in the distance. The meandering Bicol River can also be seen emptying out into San Miguel Bay. Wide stretches of rice fields interrupted by the occasional array of houses and intersected by roads are a sight to behold from 5,000 feet in the air.

Even at lower altitudes, the setting sun offers a majestic view of the entire province slowly being bathed in dimming golden sunlight before being plunged into darkness. At night though when temperatures plummet significantly, the sky merges with the darkness under it, with the star field and the pinpricks of light from Naga below becoming one and indefinable.

At the break of dawn, trekkers at the mouth of Mt. Isarog’s gaping crater can witness the sun rising slowly from the Pacific Ocean and basking the forested and steep crater slopes of Mt. Isarog in warm sunlight. Looking southward, climbers can clearly see the peaks of Mt. Asog, Mt. Malinao, and the world-famous Mayon Volcano lined up in a neat row.

More than thirty known waterfalls offer respite to weary climbers on the way down from the peak. Rivulets, streams, and hot springs also abound on Mt. Isarog, giving tired trekkers the opportunity to rest their bodies, listen to the symphony of wild birds and restive monkeys, and experience nature at its best.

Conquering Mt. Isarog is an odyssey like no other. Physical endurance, strength, and stamina may play crucial roles in ascending the challenging trail but the combination of both thrill and satisfaction make the Mt. Isarog adventure the climb of a lifetime.

Peñafrancia Basilica

The Peñafrancia Minor Basilica is located on the outskirts of Naga City—also known as the Piligrim City and Queen City of Bicol—in the Bicol Region of thePhilippines. The Image of Our Lady of Peñafrancia is enshrined in her sanctuary at the Basilica Minore, Balatas Road Naga City. Rodel Cajot was appointed rector in 2011.

he concept for the building came from the late Archbishop Pedro Paulo Santos y Songco in 1960. Construction began on April 18, 1976, but was delayed for a number of years due to financing problems and was not completed until September 1981.

On May 22, 1982, it was dedicated as The Church of Nuestra Señora de Peña de Francia and it wasn't until May 22, 1985 that the church was given the title of "Basilica Minore" from Rome after a request from the third Archbishop of Caceres, Leonardo Z. Legaspi, O.P., D.D.

The Peñafrancia Basilica Minore houses an image of the virgin Mary that was sculpted in 1710. It was commissioned by Miguel de Cobarrubias, who moved to the Philippines from Spain with his family and believed that the virgin Mary had helped him numerous times in his life. The image was housed in a small chapel until the Basilica Minore was built constructed.

Archbishop Pedro P. Santos noted that the devotees and pilgrims kept increasing through the years. In 1960, he dreamt of building a basilica to give honor to Our Lady. Shortly after, through the meditation of the Archbishop Emeritus Teopisto V. Alberto, D.D. and the Association of Our Lady of Peñafrancia, Mr and Mrs. Macario Mariano donated a three hectare lot at barrio Balatas. Bishop Concordio Sarte initiated the ground work of the construction. Blessing and laying of the cornerstone was held on Easter

Sunday, April 18, 1976 having Church dignitaries led by Cardinal Jaime Sin and prominent Bicolanosponsors.

Malabsay Falls

The CITY GOVERNMENT OF NAGA is under taking serious efforts to build important facilities along Malabsay Falls which is located on the shoulder of Mt. Isarog in Barangay Panicuason, some 25 kilometers east ofthe city proper.

The planned facilities under the Malabsay Falls Ecology Park Development Project is aimed at bringing in more domestic and foreign tourist arrivals in the city and the BicolRegion.

The development, according to the City Planning and Development Office, would contribute to the achievement of a national target of 6.3 million tourist arrivals by year 2016.

Once the project is completed, the area is expected to enhance further its socio-economic growth considering the sprouting of various entrepreneurial activities in one of the city’s major eco-tourism destinations.

Visitors coming from different regions who participated in the assembly here of  judo and martial arts enthusiasts last May, this year, were awed by the charm of Malabsay Falls which some of them regarded as “better than that of Pagsanjan Falls in Laguna.”

Mayor Bongat said the development project aims to transform Malabsay Falls into an eco-tourism destination where recreational facilities will blend with nature, complementing, rather than, spoiling its ecosystem.

Tagged as a priority project of the city government, the SangguniangPanlungsod recently enacted a resolution identifying the planas a priority project and endorsed the same to the Regional Development Council, the Department of Tourism and the Tourism Infrastructure Enterprise Zoning Authority (TIEZA) for funding.

MT. ISAROG NATURAL PARK

The highest forested peak in Southern Luzon rising at 1,966 meters above sea level, this dormant volcano serves as open sanctuary to many plants, birds and animals that are known to reside in Luzon.  Its 16 major rivers and 30-something waterfalls provide potable water to 15 towns and cities of Camarines Sur.  The travelers’ guide “The Lonely Planet” lists it as an interesting destination for trekkers and nature lovers. Declared as a national park by President Manuel Quezon in 1937, Mt. Isarog has been the subject of many researches because of its high concentration of endemic flora and fauna.
