A Note from the Administrator...Hello and welcome to August! I am very excited as this is my inaugural article for our St. Elizabeth Place and The Village Newsletter. Whether you are reading this newsletter in hardcopy or electronic form, I hope you like the new format. We hope to utilize the new newsletter to reach not only our residents, but also the family and friends that make up the extended Providence Park family. There is always a lot going on at Providence Park and we want to get the word out! We are always thinking of new and better ways to serve our residents. Please let us know if you have suggestions or ideas as well. Thank you for choosing to call Providence Park home.
Sincerely, Michael Olmstead, Administrator

C. J. has always lived in Dallas, that is until 1997, when his daughter thought he and his wife should move closer to them, so they moved to Waco. He spent 35 years with the telephone company before retiring. His wife is a resident of St. Catherine’s, and he has
breakfast with her every morning. They have one daughter, Ruth Ann.He used to play 42 and might try to play again, if someone invites him. C. J. is very friendly, so get to know him and make him feel welcomed here at St. Elizabeth.
Sarah Haddox of Dallas performs for the residents at the 4th of July happy hour (top) while residents take the opportunity to visit with one another during the celebration (below).

New Friends at Providence ParkWelcome! Ruby HoffmeyerApt. 2306 Ruby lived most of her adult life in the Mart area, and was a resident of the Mart nursing home prior to coming to St. Elizabeth. She worked for the County Tax Office for 24 years before retirement. She has four children but only one lives in the Waco area- Judy who is married to our own Dave Guyer, Executive Director & Vice President of Development for the Providence Foundation.
Ruby likes to play 42 and any other card or domino game. Please get acquainted with Ruby, she’s a very fun and active person. Welcome to the Providence Park family….
I would like to personally thank everyone who made a contribution to the Muscular Dystrophy Association “Lock Up” on my behalf. Without you a child with this disease would not be able to go to summer camp this year.
P.S. If you know how to bake a cake with a file in it, I will be in jail at the Allen Samuels Dealership from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday August 4, 2011.
Your favorite and only Activity Director - Sharon Clark
Making a Difference
Get ready to say it’s Mmmm Mmmm Good... twice! We will be taking not one, but two “out to lunch” trips in August! The first trip will be to Honeybees Deli on Valley Mills Drive on the 5th at 10:45 a.m. I have it on very good authority from some of the residents who have been
Let’s Make It a Lunch Date...Twice in August!
there, the food is great.
Then on Friday August 19th we will be going to a very nice restaurant, 1424 on Washington Avenue at 10:45 a.m. I hear they have some of the best food in town. Come join us for some good food and fellowship, you just might like it……

Remembering....
On Friday August 19th the residents will be traveling to Geneva Hall Bingo in Elm Mott. St. Joseph Catholic Church in Bellmead holds this bingo beginning at 7:00 p.m.each Friday night with proceeds going to other charitable organizations. Sets cost $5.00 each and you can win from $150.00 to $500.00 per game if you’re lucky enough to bingo by yourself. We should be returning to the facility around 9:45 p.m. with all our winnings. What a way to spend a Friday evening and you can even sleep late the next morning…….
BINGO! At Geneva Hall
Although born on a ranch at Radersburg, Montana,on August 2, 1905, Myrna Edele Williams was never cast as a “country girl” She began her career at 18 at the Grauman’s Egyptian Theater in Hollywood.
She changed her name to Loy in 1925 when she signed a contract with Warner Bros. She earned $75.00 a week and transitioned from silent films to “talkies”. Her first movie The Desert Song, was shot in 1929. By 1931 she signed with MGM, and starred in Manhattan Melodrama”, a gangster movie, with Clark Gable and William Powell. The movie was a runaway success, because John Dillinger, had left hiding to see it. He was shot while exiting the Biograph Theater in Chicago, by FBI agents; the resulting notoriety drew in the crowds. Loy’s success as Nora Charles proved she had talent. She became one of the busiest and most highly paid actresses, appearing with such greats as: Spencer Tracy, Clark Gable, and Robert Montgomery….
Despite many outstanding performances, Loy was never nominated for an Oscar. However, in 1991, the Academy awarded her an Academy Honorary Award “ for her career achievement.” She accepted via camera from her New York home, her last public appearance. She died during surgery on December 14, 1993, at the age of 88. She was cremated, and her ashes are buried in the Forestvale Cemetary in Helena, Montana.

Lucy sings, she dances, she’s good at making you laugh and her costumes are wonderful. You are guaranteed to have a good time if you come. Bring a friend or neighbor with you and enjoy the fun at our August birthday party.

First Outing for the Newly Fromed Photography ClubOn Monday August 29th, the newly formed photography club will be traveling around Waco to take in the sights. The van will be leaving at 1:30 p.m. from the Village Lobby to photograph “The Sights of Waco”. These photos will be printed and displayed at Providence Park for all residents, family members, employees and visitors to see.
We should be very proud of our city and all the exciting things to see here, so if you have some suggestions as to what you would like to photograph bring them with you. We have a new van, a tank full of gas and a lot of pictures to take. So bring those cameras and hop on the van with Sharon and let’s have some fun!
“Hat Show” with Claire MastersOn Tuesday August 9th at 2:30 p.m. Claire Masters will be presenting her famous “Hat Show” in the Village Dining room. I hear she has some famous super models lined up to do the modeling for you. Some of which you might even
recognize. Claire put this show on for us several years ago and everyone had such a great time, we thought we would have her back again. So, come on down and see if you recognize some of the hats from yesteryear. It might bring back a memory or two for you.
