Dear Parents and Carers, Are birthdays important to you? Do you enjoy the celebration, the fun, the joy of the occasion? Hopefully, your answer is an enthusiastic “Yes!” for our birthday marks the beginning of our existence as an individual in the outside world. On Sunday we will celebrate the Church’s birthday which is Pentecost. If you are thinking of a cake and candles, then probably you will have to think in terms of one candle being representative of 100 years, for Pentecost is nearly 2000 years old. Amongst those present at the First Birthday were the Apostles and we are told that, “They were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit enabled them to speak.” Acts. 2.4 From that moment the Apostles were gifted with courage to preach the teachings of Jesus throughout Jerusalem and the surrounding area. They did this till the persecution of Herod Agrippa who seized James and executed him; the other Apostles were forced to leave Jerusalem and so began their preaching to “all nations”. God, our Father, through Your Son, Jesus, You promised to pour out Your Spirit, That we may know the truth of Your love and proclaim it through the actions of our lives. Prepare our hearts for the Feast of Pentecost, That we may be truly open to receive the great gifts and blessings of Your immeasurable love. Amen DEBATING CIRCLE Last week the North Shore Cluster Debating Circle commenced. Prouille hosted 8 debates. This is a great opportunity for our students in Stage 3 to develop their skills in debating and have first- hand experience at debating with their peers from neighbouring schools. Our Stage 3 students need to be congratulated on their excellent preparation and participation. They presented well-articulated cases supported with a diverse range of validated evidence. They also need to be congratulated on their refutations. This week we are off to Sacred Heart Pymble to debate the topic “That technology has harmed the playground”. ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Prouille Athletics Carnival 2017…Thank you! Thank you to the many parents who were so generous with their time and efforts to assist us with the running of our Athletics Carnival last Thursday. It was a perfect day and it was mainly due to the assistance we received from parents. Thank you to Mr.de Villiers and also Ms. Townsend for organising our Carnival which was a great success. Thank you also to the teachers for their valued assistance. Congratulations and thank you to all of the Prouille students for their great sportsmanship and achieving their personal best. CATHOLIC SCHOOL FUNDING I thank the parents who have spoken to me or emailed me about the funding challenges facing Catholic Education. Many of our households are still adjusting to the fee increase from last year and I appreciate the efforts families go to, to give their children a Catholic education. The proposed changes to the current funding model through amendments to the Education Act are extremely concerning for our Catholic Schools like Prouille. I am most appreciative of the support of our P&F and the work in the background being undertaken by Emma McGrath & Warwick Kirby (P&F president) who have been tirelessly researching the situation, making sense of information from politicians, media and the Catholic Schools Office. These proposed changes to the Education Act will be voted on in the Senate before the end of June and could result in significantly higher fees for Prouille parents and all Catholic schools on the North Shore. Catholic Education needs your help! If you are concerned about the unprecedented consequences for our local Catholic schools I would ask that you phone, email or write to your local Federal Member. The Broken Bay Diocese has also set up a petition to oppose the funding cuts (see link below)
