New Direction Clothing was established in 1996 to manufacture Workwear and Waterproof Clothing.

Originally named EP Workwear Ltd, we changed our trading name in 2011 to reflect the growing range of clothing we now offer.

Through a programme of constant innovation, development and product research we are able to meet the challenges of compliance with the latest EC and International standards.

With all raw base fabrics, trimmings, threads, zippers and accessories sourced directly from the UK and Europe we are able to guarantee not only consistency of supply but quality and performance of products offered.

Fabrics are traceable from the raw cotton all the way through the weaving stages to ensure compliance and quality is achieved at every stage.

Our UK manufacturing facility enables us to offer bulk supply as well as special measures, top-up orders and made to order designs whilst keeping the minimum order quantities low to help stock control.

We work closely with our customers to achieve price points required along with delivery schedules to ensure you are never without stock. Purchasing directly from the UK enables our customers to keep stock levels at a minimum ensuring investment in product is kept at the optimum level and therefore achieving a balance of service to customer against stock on shelf.

Our flexibility in manufacturing allows our customers to design a garment around their exact requirement as opposed to purchasing generic garments designed for a multitude of end users.

We hope that you find our Arc solution of interest and welcome the opportunity to discuss your requirements in detail. If there is a garment that you require that we do not feature please call us to discuss and we can put a solution in place.

The following table lists the most common European Standards for technical fabrics and protective clothing and their corresponding symbols.

WhAT IS ARC FAuLT, ARC FLASh AnD ARC bLAST?Most electrical accidents are not the result of direct electric shocks; they are the result of an arc fault. An Arc fault occurs when the insulation or air separation between high voltage conductors is compromised allowing current to flow through the air. Under these conditions, a plasma arc or an “Arc Flash”- may form between the conductors, unleashing a potentially explosive release of thermal energy. An “Arc blast” is the high-pressure sound wave caused by the Arc Fault.

The dangers of Arc Flash and Arc Blast

An Arc Flash event can expel large amounts of deadly energy, resulting in:

• Extreme temperature

Arc flash temperatures can reach 35,000°F, this is 4 times the surface temperature of the Sun.

You can imagine what these kinds of temperature will do to human skin. The arc flash will also cause ignition of clothing which will only add to the severity of the skin burns. This occurs within fractions of a second.

Arc Flash temperatures can also vaporize metals or turn them into liquid.

• Very bright light including Ultra Violet light

The bright flash can result in temporary or permanent blindness. Intense ultraviolet (UV) light created by arc flash can damage the retina in the eye, cause temporary or permanent blindness, cause burning sensations and severe headaches.

An Arc Blast event can exert extreme pressure resulting in:

• Explosive forces (pressure wave)

Intense heat causes the rapid heating of the surrounding air, resulting in a blast.

The pressure wave can knock workers off balance and even throw them across the room against walls, windows or other equipment.

• High noise levels

Test data has shown arc blasts to exceed 140DB, this is the same as an airplane taking off.

The sound blast can cause eardrums to rupture resulting in temporary or permanent hearing loss.

• Fast moving debris

Tools, meters, nuts, bolts and other loose objects can be turned into life threatening projectiles by the explosion, they can travel at speeds in excess of 700mph.

The Arc blast often causes equipment to explode ejecting parts, insulating materials, and supporting structures.

Arc Flash accidents typically happen while equipment is being worked on or “live”. The subsequent injuries from Arc Flash and arc blast tend to be very severe. Death is a very real possibility and serious burn could require years of skin grafts.

Even workers at distances of over 10 feet front the incident could suffer injury.

What Causes Arc Flash?

• Overload

One of the things that can cause an Arc Flash is an overload of current. If there’s too much electricity in a given circuit, then the overload of power will attempt to escape somewhere. One of the available paths that the spare current can jump to is through the air to another conductor. Normally electricity won’t flow through air, but if there is a build up of additional charge in the circuit and there is a nearby conductor (say for example a copper tube or pipe), the electricity will jump through the air in an arc and establish a connection with that other conductor.

• Poor Maintenance

Most equipment, if it’s properly maintained, is safe from an arc flash occurring. If an energized piece of equipment breaks down and still has power running into it, the chances are greater that an Arc Flash will occur. Other contributing factors are loose connections within the machinery and poor insulation. The loose connection may create space between conductors within the equipment that will lead to internal Arc Flashes. In addition poor insulation may lead to electrical current escaping from the circuits and wires and arcing to other parts of the equipment, or from the piece of equipment to another conductor.

• Accidental Contact

A third factor that can cause an Arc Flash is accidental contact. Let’s say that you have two pieces of energized equipment that are far enough apart that an arc flash won’t occur. Now touch one piece of equipment with a conductive, metal tool. That additional contact may prove to be the necessary spark that sets off an Arc Flash. For this reason it’s important to be careful around energized equipment and to avoid touching it at all. If maintenance

needs to be done on pieces of energized equipment, then the power should be shut off and the remaining current properly grounded.

How to purchase your protective clothing

In order to choose adequate protective clothing, the potential incident heat energy (in units of energy per square surface - cal/cm² or kJ/m2) caused by an electric arc and to which a worker may be exposed, needs to be calculated in a thorough risk assessment.

Why New Direction?

Choosing New Direction Clothing as your supplier enables you to choose and personalise the garment around your specific requirements.

As well as adhering to the relevant standards required by European and International legislation our service enables you to design and position pockets around ancillary equipment.

With the added danger of tools and other instruments falling and creating risks we are able to size and produce pockets around your equipment to ensure ease of access as well as safely housing the equipment.

Within our range you are able to choose your colour (subject to minimum order quantity) and personalise the garments with branding with your corporate image.
