• Electronics manufacturers are now producing products in a more rapid manner = disposal at a more rapid manner
• Allows recyclers to have a more steady stream of obsolete products coming in
• Volumes have lead to enforcement of legislation

• CRT glass is a real problem in the U.S.
• Only a couple real options in the U.S
• Storage of the CRT glass

Positive Changes and Success
• Free and Convenient Recycling for Michigan Residents & Small Businesses
• Certifications are now required by collectors, municipalities, and non-for-profits
• More recycling options at all levels of local to state governments. Rural Area Incentives
• More resource recovery and diversion from landfills, keeping the hazardous materials from leaching into the surrounding environment.
• Monitor and Report• Shared Responsibility• More Recyclers are joining statewide efforts to divert electronics
from landfills• Increased Job Creation State Wide

Best Practices
We continue to update standards from certifications to keep up with the evolving environment of the e-waste recycling industry.
E-stewards is currently the highest level of certification in the industry.
R2 is the minimum you should request from recyclers- just because they have these certifications does not mean they are doing it right or responsibly!
Protecting Your Identity and The Environment
Preventing Sham Recycling Illegitimate recyclers promise to pay- but will pick over
the items they can make money off of, and leave the undesirable (and somewhat more challenging to recycle) products.
Scrappers that pick through unsecured sites leave allowance for no data security and personal information can get in the wrong hands.
Sham recyclers are found to be green washing- buying material streams for very high rates, while legitimate recyclers pay more expensive fees.
Some recyclers claim they have recycled more than they have- this causes unsustainability in the marketplace, and leads to artificial prices.
Protecting Your Identity and The Environment
Where are we headed?• Streamline laws between states to ease confusion
from state to state for all involved. (recyclers/states officials/OEM’s and others
• Continue to engage stake holders for meaningful positive industry changes and adjustments to minimize illegal activities
• Updating standards from certification to keep up with the evolving environment in the recycling industry
• Future Export Ban• More Transparency & Due Diligence
Protecting Your Identity and The Environment
Transparency Is Important• Tour e-scrap facilities• Ensure safety measures are in place• Review process flowcharts• Ensure that hazardous waste is responsibly sent
downstream• Check that the processor is registered with the
state agency- if legislation is in place• Ask about facility security• Verify certifications are valid• Do your due diligence!
