“Marioff retrofitted HI-FOG sprinklersystems on all our vessels to date. In some cases, most of the piping wasinstalled while the vessels were sailingto the Far East from Europe. It wastherefore natural to choose HI-FOGfor the company’s two new vessels -‘Superstar Leo’ and ‘Superstar Virgo’.We want the best for our ships and ourguests.”

water mist fire protection

It is therefore no surprise that HI-FOG hasbecome the first choice fire protection technology forboth newbuild and retrofit marine installations.

I-FOG is the world’s leading water mist fire protection technology. Over 500 HI-FOG systems

have been installed on cruise ships, ferries, high speedcraft, cargo and sailing vessels around the world. Londonand Madrid are using HI-FOG to protect special firerisks in underground metro systems. And oil companies, power utilities, insurance and telecom companies aroundthe world are finding the benefits of safeguarding highvalue risks with HI-FOG. A fire protection technologywhich is fast, efficient, and totally safe for people andthe environment.

Incorporating genuinely innovative technology, today’s HI-FOG marine systems offer high efficiencyfire suppression and much lighter weight compared tothe competition. In machinery spaces, the possibilityto activate HI-FOG the moment a fire is detected maysave lives and will save costs.

Real fires and accidental discharges during thelast few years have confirmed the fast suppression andminimal water damage caused by a HI-FOG release. And much smaller pipe sizes, even than low pressuremist systems, substantially cut installation andcommissioning time.

HI-FOG - the first choice for new

4

ecause passenger safety is the highest priority,HI-FOG fire protection is always the first

choice for today’s newbuild cruise ships and ferries.Superior fire suppression has been proven inthousands of full scale fire tests. Smaller pipe sizesmean lower weight and no need for additionaldrainage piping. And minimal water damage aftera fire or accidental discharge means virtually noclean-up costs and little passenger inconvenience.Which is why about 80% of today’s newbuild cruiseships are being fitted with HI-FOG systems.

Marioff has provided the primary fire protection systemfor the 137,000 GRT ‘Voyager of the Seas‘, the firstof five luxury cruise ships in the Project Eagle seriesfor Royal Caribbean Cruise Line. The system incorpo-rates over 11,000 HI-FOG sprinklers and protects allaccommodation areas including cabins, public spaces, service areas and stores as well as machinery spaces.

Piping specialist L.C. Bygg & Rør A/S has installedthe HI-FOG sprinkler systems on several RoRoferries recently built at the Fosen Mek shipyardin Norway. Managing Director Conny Karlssonexplained the advantages:

“The small size of HI-FOGpiping means we have noproblems installing in corri-dor ceilings already crammedwith other pipework andcables, no need to weld, tubescan be bent on the spot andbulkhead penetration is veryeasy too. Installing aHI-FOG system is easier andmuch faster than a normalsprinkler system.”

Always the first choice for interiordesigners, HI-FOG sprinklers’hi-tech appearance blends withevery style.

I-FOG is particularly suited to retrofitting on passenger vessels because

the small pipe sizes mean considerably lowerweight of the total system. This is often a limitingfactor on existing passenger vessels, which musthave a sprinkler system installed by the year2005. Because pipework drawings are notnecessary, pipe spools can be easily made up onsite, and installation of the small piping andcompression fittings is much easier comparedto the welded pipework of low pressure systems. Commissioning is quicker too, with lesspotential water damage, due to the unique non-return valve fitted in the HI-FOG sprinklerswhich allows sprinkler replacement withoutdraining the system.

Pipework in the crew and serviceareas of the ‘Saga Rose’, was pre-installed while the vessel was inservice. This allowed installationof power unit and piping for publicspaces to be carried out within avery short time period at the yard.

The vessel did not have sufficientemergency power for the sprinklerpump unit, so Marioff supplied aself-contained diesel driven unitwhich avoided the need for a newemergency generator.

I-FOG is ideal for all vessels. Fast ferries, luxuryyachts, sailing ships and cargo vessels all benefit

from the highest fire protection performance, lightweight and unobtrusive nature of the HI-FOG pipingand sprinklers compared to conventional fireprotection methods. The Stena HSS fast ferries, thelargest in the world, have HI-FOG total fireprotection for all accommodation, service area, cardeck and machinery spaces. In addition the vesselshave a lightweight HI-FOG ‘hydrant’ system insteadof a conventional fire mains.

The HI-FOG M

HI-FOG system for accommodation spaces

The HI-FOG Marine Sprinkler System is approvedby all major Marine Authorities and ClassificationSocieties to IMO Res. A.800. The system is totallyautomatic and comprises a number of HI-FOGsprinklers connected by fresh water filled piping (atapprox. 25 bar) to a pump unit via section valves.Water is taken from the vessel fresh water tanksthrough a high integrity filter to a dedicated freshwater tank.

The pump unit may be electrically driven, with an emergency power connection, alternativelydiesel driven. An accumulator unit provides back-up high pressure water for a limited time periodaccording to the SOLAS requirements.

The HI-FOG sprinklers are activated by heatfrom a fire breaking the release bulb, which in turnallows water to flow through the nozzles. The waterflow through the section valve gives an alarm signalto the fire alarm panel, and a start signal to thecontrol cabinet at the pump unit.

The pumps operate at pressures of 80–140bar. In fire tests, even in the most severe fires, onlyfour sprinklers have been activated, but the pumpunit is sized to deliver water at the specified pressureup to 280 m2, as required by SOLAS.

HI-FOG total protection in machinery spacesHI-FOG is capable of rapidly extinguishing pool andspray fuel fires as well as very fast cooling in amachinery space. It’s therefore the first choice fireprotection technology when crew safety and fastsuppression are paramount. In machinery spaces the HI-FOG system is normallyactivated manually in sections, so the pipework fromthe section valve is dry. The pump unit will startsupplying the activated section with a fog at a pressureof approximately 70 bar.

Approved HI-FOG systems are now protectingmachinery spaces up to and in excess of 3000 m3 ina variety of ships including seismic vessels, fast ferries, luxury yachts and other specialized vessels.

Which pump unit?

On new vessels or ships with ample emergencypower, electric pump units are normally supplied. If emergency power is not available a diesel powerunit can be installed. The innovative and economicalGPU (Gas-driven Pump Unit), currently goingthrough the approval process, is also suitable forvessels where space and fresh water is at a premiumand emergency power is not available.

Local protection systems

SOLAS regulations require ships to have local protection of highrisk areas such as main and auxiliary engines, lube oil separators, boiler fronts and incinerators. Marioff can supply approvedHI-FOG systems tested according to the latest IMO Fire TestProcedures utilizing existing electric, diesel or GPU pump units.Alternatively economical self contained MAU units can be installedwhere no HI-FOG pump system is installed.

water mist fire protection

... final wordThe following real fires have been extinguishedon ships by the HI-FOG system:

• Cabin fire on cruise ferry, Germany/1992Welding during the final phase of ship

construction caused a fire in a cabin. HI-FOG

extinguished the fire immediately.

• Galley fire on cruise vessel, Far East/1994During a cruise a deep fat fryer in the galley

caught fire but was immediately extinguished

by the HI-FOG system.

• Public space fire, Far East/1995A decorative banner in a restaurant ignited and

the HI-FOG system was automatically activated.

The fire was extinguished in seconds preventing

extensive fire and smoke damage.

• Cable fire on older cruise ship UK/1997During refurbishment a fire started in an unpro-

tected cable duct. The newly installed HI-FOG

system in the adjacent store area was activated

by fire through an open doorway. HI-FOG

controlled the fire until it was extinguished.

• Machinery space fire Carribean/1999A major diesel engine failure resulted in a dan-

gerous fire in the main engine room of a large

cruise ship. The HI-FOG local protection system

was manually activated immediately and the

fire was quickly extinguished without danger

to the crew.

• Smoke in engine room on a fast ferry, Finland/2000Turbo charger damage caused an exhaust leak

and smoke. The HI-FOG system was deployed

immediately and the fire was extinguished. The

vessel returned to Tallinn port under own power.

15

Superior Fire SuppressionMore than 5000 full scale fire tests prove the superior fire extinguishingand smoke absorption capability of HI-FOG.

Minimal Water UsageLow flow and large surface area of water mist mean minimal waterusage and damage in case of accidental discharge or fire.

Low WeightWeight of installed HI-FOG system including water is 30% that of lowpressure mist systems and 20 % of conventional sprinkler systems.

Safe for People & EnvironmentHI-FOG uses the best attributes of the only truly environmentally benignagent – water. It is the system of choice for most marine fire protectionapplications.
