From our very first day in Government, Labour undertook toprotect the rights of workers and to stand up for low paidworkers in particular. That work is continuing every single day.So far we have:

l RESTORED THE MINIMUM WAGEOne of Labour's top priorities when we came into Governmentwas to reverse the disgraceful cut in the minimum wage bythe previous Fianna Fáil led Government. Within months ofentering Government, Labour restored the minimum wagefrom €7.65 to €8.65.

l TOOK 330,000 LOW PAID WORKERS OUT OF THEUNIVERSAL SOCIAL CHARGE

As well as delivering on our promise not to raise incometax,we removed 330,000 people on low incomes from theUniversal Social Charge. This was a big boost to low paid, part-time and seasonal workers. It also helped more people tomove into employment.

l PROTECTED FAIR PAY AND CONDITIONS FOR LOW PAID WORKERSThe Labour Party has delivered on its promise to protect the rights of low paid workers. We brought in newlegislation to protect the fair pay and conditions of low paid workers. This also protects their rights, theirearnings and their standards of living. Workers that will be protected by this legislation include contractcleaners; hairdressers; hotel and restaurant workers; retail workers among other areas.

l SAFEGUARDED COMMUNITY EMPLOYMENT SCHEMES Labour in Government remains committed to Community Employment schemes. More than €315 millionhas been allocated to CE schemes for 2012.

l DELIVERED FOR TEMPORARY AGENCY WORKERSLabour in Government has ensured protection of temporary agency workers. This has been done by makingsure that such workers are given equal treatment in their basic working and employment conditions. Theseprotections will cover areas such as basic pay, working time, rest periods, overtime, annual leave and publicholidays.

l DEFENDING THE CROKE PARK AGREEMENTLabour is a strong supporter of the Croke Park Agreement. This agreement supports low paid publicservants and has already delivered significant savings, along with significant reform.
