Calls have been coming into the Local about what to do about working in the heat. The hot weather is something to take seriously because heat illness is potentially deadly. Physical exertion, heat, and humidity can raise a person’s body temperature putting tremendous stress on the individual. From mild heat rash and sunburn, to more serious heat cramps and heat exhaustion, to the severity of heat stroke, working or playing in the sun is something to be concerned with. For Local 80 members here are some guidelines that the producers should be following: If the temperature is forecast to be above 79 0 the employer should have a meeting to remind everyone of their heat illness prevention plan: Wear light, loose fitting clothes. Acclimate yourself to the heat. Drink plenty of water. Have shade available for workers to rest out of the sun. Watch out for symptoms of heat illness in yourself and others. If the forecast for the day calls for high heat, over 94 0 , the plan should include near by shade or other cool place for workers to get out of the heat. There should be people designated to watch workers for heat illness symptoms and to remind people to drink water. People should be encouraged to rest in the shade before symptoms appear. First aid or other medical services should be called when heat illness is suspected. The symptoms you are looking for include: light-headedness, dark urine (sign of dehydration), dizziness, fatigue, headache, pale skin, muscle cramps, profuse sweating, and/or nausea, More serious symptoms are: vomiting, diarrhea, dizziness, fainting, lack of sweating, hot and dry skin, rapid heartbeat, rapid and shallow breathing, confusion, disorientation, seizures, and/or unconsciousness. If you are another worker has these symptoms get help. The more serious symptoms are signs of heat stroke. Get the person out of the heat, begin cooling them off, and get help immediately. You can get more information from the A2-Enviormental Safety course book from the Safety Pass Program. Chapter 3 (Scene 3) is part of the training OSHA requires of our employers to provide for workers. In the chapter you will find information about heat illness symptoms, how to prevent heat illness. At the CSATF.org website, Safety Bulletin #35-Safety Considerations for the Prevention of Heat Illness also has helpful information for dealing with heat. If you google “cal osha heat illness” or go to www.dir.ca.gov/dosh/heatillnessinfo.html you will find links, publications, and other information on preventing heat illness.

Protect Yourself from the Summer Heat

by Kent H Jorgensen Summer began with the Summer Solstice, June 20, and with the summer comes the heat.

For Local 80 members here are some guidelines that the producers should be following: If the temperature is forecast to be above 790 the employer should have a meeting to remind everyone of their heat illness prevention plan: Wear light, loose fitting clothes. Acclimate yourself to the heat. Drink plenty of water. Have shade available for workers to rest out of the sun. Watch out for symptoms of heat illness in yourself and others.

If the forecast for the day calls for high heat, over 940, the plan should include near by shade or other cool place for workers to get out of the heat. There should be people designated to watch workers for heat illness symptoms and to remind people to drink water. People should be encouraged to rest in the shade before symptoms appear. First aid or other medical services should be called when heat illness is suspected.

If you are another worker has these symptoms get help. The more serious symptoms are signs of heat stroke. Get the person out of the heat, begin cooling them off, and get help immediately.

the eightynews Issue 261

If you are reading this in a copy of The Eighty News that reached you at your home or post office box, your address is probably current with Local 80. However, is your address current with the Motion Picture Industry Pension and Health Plans? If you have changed your mailing address in the last couple of years and not notified them, you may not receive your health plan or dental insurance cards, or your pension statement.

If Contract Services doesn’t have your current address you could miss notifications of new safety classes and schedules, which means you could potentially find yourself dropped from the Industry Experience Roster, and therefore unemployable in the Industry. Could that be straightened out? Yes, of course: you could take a class late and be reinstated to the roster, but why go through the hassle? Why risk losing even one day’s pay over something as trivial as not notifying someone of your change of address.

Does the Local have your current phone numbers? If not, we are going to have a tough time sending you to work as things pick up again. (As many of you are aware, I run the callboard in the morning before the call stewards come in: it is unusual for me to be able to fill a call without finding at least one bad phone or pager number. The call stewards report the same problem when they are on duty. The member whose number it is has not only missed a potential job, they are going to be hit with a $25.00 fine for failing to keep their current phone number on file.)

“Aha!” you say, “I never get my jobs through the Union! They don’t have to know my phone number and I’ll never be fined!” Okay, granted, maybe you never hunt for work using the callboard, but does everyone who might potentially hire you have your current phone number with them at all times? At least half of all the calls received by the callboard are requests for members’ phone numbers. Of course, some of those callers may want you to hire them, but some of them may be looking to hire you. If the callboard doesn’t have your current phone number, that isn’t going to happen.

There are 222 active members who have no cellular number listed. There is no rule that says that a member has to have a cellular phone, but not having

one in today's business environment seems like a sure way to lose work. Particularly since most people who call here to get a member's phone number don’t bother to take a landline number when one is offered, even in those cases where there was no cellular number on file. (By the way, if you have gotten rid of your landline, and have not already done so, please call and have your former number removed from your record.)

English can be a tricky language, filled with hidden meanings and unexpected pitfalls for those not sufficiently knowledgeable and alert to avoid them.

A classic example of hidden meaning can be found in the following often-seen phrase: ”Your Tax Dollars At Work.” This certainly sounds innocuous enough, and even rather gratifying, with its implication that something worthwhile is actually being done with the money you would have really preferred to spend yourself. The savvy English speaker, however, is well aware that when this phrase appears on a sign anywhere along their commute, it actually means: “Prepare for a completely inexplicable traffic jam ahead, even though there is absolutely no sign of any human being doing anything productive within miles of here.”

In a similar manner, another common phrase, “Forwarding Order Expired," holds a different, and more sinister, meaning than appears on the surface. When this phrase is found on a piece of mail returned to Local 80, it actually means, ”Fine the member to whom this item was originally mailed $25.00 for failing to notify Local 80 of their change of address in a timely manner.”

If you have chosen to delay payment on your dues until you are about to return to work, it is important to remember that you will still be dropped or suspended from membership on schedule.

Delaying payment for too long can be a very expensive option. Once your status has been changed to Suspended a reinstatement fee will be applied to your account. If you have worked, the fine for working without your dues current will also be applied.

To make matters worse, once your status is changed to Suspended, it stays Suspended until you have paid all back dues and assessments in full.

From the Desk of the Secretary-Treasurer
