death rate from cancer than women who did not. The study concluded that the increased death rate was due to daily exposure to hazardous chemicals found in ordinary house-hold products. In addition to their inherent toxicity, these products also create tons of toxic waste which is disposed of in the environment in the form of air and water pollution and solid toxic waste. As early as 1984, the US National Toxicology Program observed that chemical damage to the immune system could result in ‘hypersensitiv-ity or allergy’ to specific chemicals or

to chemicals in general. Damage to the immune system can have far-reaching consequences for an individu-al, leaving him or her vulner-able to attack by bacteria and viruses.
