Protect Your Child from Choking Risks Choking is a leading cause of unintentional death for children aged 4 and under, according to injuryfacts.nsc.org, and our homes are filled with potential choking hazards. To keep your child safe, be sure you know the dangers to avoid and what to do if you witness him or her choking. Choking Risks As your child ages his or her diet changes accordingly, making it crucial that you practice food safety to prevent choking. Try these tips to keep your child safe at mealtime: Always cut up foods into tiny pieces that your child can easily chew and swallow- encourage your child to chew slowly to prevent choking Never give your child hard candy or other foods that are difficult to swallow Do not use the Heimlich maneuver on children younger that 1-they require a different rescue procedure Infant and Child CPR If you suspect your child is choking, he or she many or may not require CPR. First: Check to be sure the infant cannot cry, cough or breathe If not, try to clear the airway with back slaps and chest thrusts-Learn the proper procedure at nsc.org/choking If the infant is unresponsive, or is found unresponsive, perform CPR– note that young children and infants require different CPR steps than an adult, and learn the steps at nsc.org/SaveaLife Household Dangers Though choking on food is a major danger for young kids, plenty of other small household items can also put them at risk. To protect your child, take care to: Use cordless window coverings or update your windows with a free retrofit kit to prevent strangulation from window cords-about one child per month dies this way in the U.S. Button batteries can cause injury or death if swallowed or placed in the nose or ears-keep all batteries and devices containing them up and our of sight of your child Many small items such as coins and magnets can pose choking risks if swallowed-always keep an eye on your child to spot the signs of choking and prevent them from getting hold of small objects Take one step for safety: Pr ovide your child with age-appropriate toys-make sure there are not small pieces that could be removed or broken off, as they could pose choking risks.
