Prostate Health Education Network, Inc Background Founded in 2003 by Thomas A. Farrington First major initiative was September 2003PHEN posted awareness posters on subways and buses in nine cities, including Boston, New York, Newark, Cleveland, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Oakland, Philadelphia and Detroit Developed the on-line PHEN portal Recruited Black prostate cancer survivorsestablished the PHEN Survivor Network. In 2004, focused on establishing a model program in Boston Boston Initiatives PHEN DEVELOPED WORKING PARTNERSHIPS WITH: Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and NBLIC Community Health Centers Churches and Community Organizations (retail, barbershops, etc.) Massachusetts Prostate Cancer Coalition Placed awareness posters within community partners facilities (30+ partners) Recruited Black prostate cancer survivors established the PHEN Survivor Network. Established Bostons first Prostate Cancer Support Group targeting Black men working with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and NBLIC Developed partnerships with community health centers Coordinated free screenings working with Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Community Health Centers and Churches Tee-Off to Fight Prostate Cancer Golf Tournament and Community Awareness Event Major Accomplishments Prostate health awareness has achieved a higher level of visibility within Bostons Black community The African American prostate cancer disparity has become a recognized issue Created a broad base of support for initiatives to address the disparity issue Future Goals Recruit more survivors to increase capacity for providing services Maintain existing working partnerships Expand partnership coalition Financial resources Prostate Health Education Network, Inc. National Plans and Strategies Goal To significantly impact reducing the African American prostate cancer disparity over the next five years Strategies HEIGHTEN AWARENESS IMPLEMENT PHEN INITIATIVES WITHIN FOCUS CITIES FULLY EXPLOIT THE PHEN PORTAL OBTAIN FINANCIAL SUPPORT HEIGHTEN AWARENESS Heighten awareness of the disparity as an issue especially within Black America Annual African American Prostate Cancer Disparity Summit Outreach and Support of Political Leaders Organize and Increase Participation of Churches and Women Organizations Advocate for more financial and program resources Increase Media Coverage of the Issue Strategies Implement PHEN Initiatives within Focus Cities Recruit Black Prostate Cancer Survivors and their Families as Resources Partner with Cancer Centers, Community Health Centers and other Medical Organizations Establish Support Groups, Education and Awareness Programs and Support Screening Initiatives Implement Local Communications using Awareness Posters, the Local Media and the Internet Strategies FULLY EXPLOIT THE PHEN PORTAL Utilize this asset to support local activities and to build a national PHEN network. Build and maintain a national community of survivors, partners and supporters Strategies City sites will support the activities of city initiatives and provide national visibility that will enhance overall efforts Portal will be utilized to focus on and highlight the efforts of other organizations working to address the disparity Means of communication and support across cities Portal can be easily adapted to bring additional cities on-line Obtain Financial Support Grants Sponsorships Tee Off to Fight Prostate Cancer Golf Tournament and Community Awareness Events Other Fundraising Efforts Strategies
