IntroductiontoTheEllesmereCentreforPsychotherapyandTraining(ECPT)Thecentrehasbeendesignedtoprovideafacilityofcounselling,psychotherapy,supervisionandtraining.Thereisavariedtrainingprogrammeofbothshortandlongertermcoursesprovidedbyexperiencedtrainersinaprofessionalyetrelaxedenvironment.

OurtrainingincludestheFoundationCertificateinTransactionalAnalysiswhichcanleadtocontinuedpsychotherapeuticcounsellingtrainingtowardstheDiplomainIntegrative&TransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapeuticCounsellingorpsychotherapytrainingleadingtotheDiplomainIntegrative&TransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapy.Ongainingqualification,traineesmaychoosetocontinuetrainingleadingtowardsaccreditationasaCertifiedTransactionalAnalystwithPsychotherapyspecialty(CTA(P)underUKATA(UnitedKingdomAssociationforTransactionalAnalysis)andrecognisedbytheUnitedKingdomCouncilforPsychotherapy(UKCP).AlternativelytraineesmayworktowardsregistrationandaccreditationwithUKCPasapsychotherapeuticcounsellororpsychotherapist.TheUKCPistheleadingbodyintheUKforrecognitionofpsychotherapists.

TrainingcomplieswithEATAandUKCP(UnitedKingdomforCounsellingandPsychotherapy)requirements,copiesofwhichareavailableatthecentre.

TrainingprogrammesatTheEllesmereCentrepresentlyrunfromSeptembertoJune.

TrainersKathieHostickandAnitaHollandwillprovidemostofyourtraininginTransactionalAnalysis.TheyareTrainingandSupervisingTransactionalAnalysts(TSTA),registeredwiththeUKCPandfollowtherelevantcodesofpractice.KathieisaDirectorattheCentre.

Yourprogresswillbesupportedandmonitoredbyyourmaintrainers.Visitingandassociatetrainersalsoprovidedifferentaspectsofthetheoryaspartofyourtraining.Allvisitingtrainersarequalifiedandregisteredwiththeirappropriatebody.

PhilosophyTheethosofourorganisationisrelationalanddevelopmental.Webelievethatthedevelopmentalprocessissignificantasyouprogressfromaplaceofbasictheoreticalunderstandingandskillspracticeinyourfoundationyeartoacompetentleveloftheoreticalintegration,awarenessandattunementwithinthetherapeuticrelationship.Webelieveinthecriticalevaluationofthisdevelopmentthroughassessmentandevaluation.

Fromadevelopmentalperspectivewebelievethatitisessentialtoprovideacomfortableenvironmentwhichattendstoyourphysiological,safetyandlearningneedsappropriatetoyourlevelofdevelopment.Webelievethattheseneedswillchangeasyoumovethroughthetrainingprogrammesfromasupportiveanddirectiveteachingenvironmenttoamoreelicitingandradicalenvironmentasyoudevelopmoreintegratedtheoreticalunderstanding,awarenessandattunementwithinthetherapeuticrelationship.

Therelationalperspectiveisverymuchaboutthemutualityofcommitmentbetweenthetraineeandthetrainer.Therelationshipwillbeopenandnegotiablethroughouttrainingandaspaceforself-reflectionandchallenge.

ThephilosophyofourtrainingisconcurrentwiththeTAphilosophyofpeopleareok,everyonehasthecapacitytothinkandpeoplemaketheirowndecisionsandcanchangethesedecisions.Whilstyouareexpectedtotakeresponsibilityforyourownlearningitisourresponsibilitytoensureyouareprovidedwithasafeandappropriateenvironmentforyourlearningtotakeplace.

Webelievetheeducationalrelationshipbetweenyouandyourtrainerprovidestheholding,containmentandchallengenecessaryforyourdevelopment.Thisreflectsourprofessionalphilosophyofpsychotherapyinwhichweseethetherapeuticrelationshipasthemostsignificantmediumforchange.Wearemindfuloftheneedforacriticalawarenessofthemultiplelayersofhumanexperienceandthemulti-dimensionalnatureofthetherapeuticrelationship.Wealsobelieveintheconnectednessbetweenmindandbodyandthisbeliefunderpinsourapproachtothetheoreticalcontent;thismeanswearemindfulofyourphysical,psychological,educationalandspiritualneedsinyourtrainingexperience.

Ourlearningphilosophyattendstotheprocessofrecognising,understandingandappreciatingone’sowncultureaswellasthecultureofothers.Itstresseslearningtoappreciatetheimpactofdifferencesinsociallocationbasedonsuchvariablesasrace,gender,class,age,sexual/affectionalorientation,religion,physicalabilityandlanguage.Thislearningprocessisdynamic:Aswebegintoseetheimpactofdifferencesoursenseofourselves,othersandtheworld,shifts.

TA101

• The internationally recognised 2 day introduction to TA. Delivered at the Ellesmere Centre and many other recognised training establishments throughout the world

Foundation Year

• Run over 10 weekends. The foundation year can be a stand alone or the first year towards a diploma. • Leads to Foundation Certificate In Transactional Analysis

Second Year

•  Run over 10 weekends •  Trainees at this level will usually have a

supervised placement working with clients

Third Year

FoundationCertificateinTransactionalAnalysis

ThefoundationyearprovidesanindepthintroductiontothetheoryofTransactionalAnalysis.WithinthisyearyouarerequiredtodoTA101(IntroductiontoTransactionalAnalysis)ifyouhavenotalreadydoneso.

Thefirstyearismainlycognitiveandfocusedontheoreticalunderstanding.Oneachtrainingweekendthefirstofthetwodayswillcoveraspecifictheoreticalprinciple.Theseconddaywillincorporateatutorgroup,developingskillsinrelationtothetheoryandademonstrationifappropriate.Eachmonththerewillalsobeapresentationofothercounsellingmodelsoratopicofinterestbythetrainees.

OncompletionofthisfirstyearyouwillreceivetheFoundationCertificateinTransactionalAnalysis.Thiscanbedoneasastandaloneyearorcanbeaccreditedtowardsyourongoingtraininginpsychotherapeuticcounsellingorpsychotherapy.Yourprogressthroughthisprocesswillbereviewedonanannualbasisaspartofyourcontractualrelationshipwithyourtrainer.

• CultureanddiversityisintegraltoourprogrammethroughoutthetrainingAssessmentTherewillbecontinualmonitoringbyself,peerandtutorassessmentduringtraining.Towardstheendofeachlevel,traineeswillexperiencemoreformalisedpeerandtutorevaluation.

Inthefoundationyeartherearetwoessays,apresentation,arecordingandtranscriptandassessedpractice.Therearetwolevelsofcompetencytopractice,withinaplacementsettingandprivatepractice.Acertificateofcompetencyisrequiredaheadofsettingupaplacementifyoucontinueintofurthertraining.Privatepracticeisinagreementwithyoursupervisorafteraplacementexperienceanddependentonexperienceandevaluationthroughthetrainingpentagon.Youwillneedtokeepapersonal,reflectivejournalofyourtrainingandlearningexperience,alongwithaclinicallogincludingtraininghours,supervisionhours,therapyhoursandclinicalhoursthroughoutyourtraining.PersonalTherapyTraineesarerecommendedtocommencepersonaltherapywithaUKCPPsychotherapistatthestartofthecourse.Shouldyoucontinueintoadvancedtrainingitisarequirementtobeinpersonaltherapythroughoutyourtraining.TraineeswantingtogoonandcompletetheDiplomainIntegrative&TAPsychotherapeuticCounsellingwillneedtoevidence105hoursoftherapyinordertoqualifyandgainaccreditationwithUKCP,traineeswantingtocompletetheDiplomainIntegrativeandTAPsychotherapywillneedtoevidence160hoursofpersonaltherapythroughouttheir4yearsoftrainingtogainaccreditationwithUKCPandtraineesonthefullCTAPsychotherapytrainingroutewillneedtoevidence160hoursofpersonaltherapyoverthefouryearsoftheirtraining.UKCPrequirethattheexperienceoftherapybecongruentwiththepsychotherapyinwhichatraineeistrainingandthatthetherapistbeUKCPregistered.AstraightforwardapproachtothiscongruenceandregistrationwouldbethattraineeshavesomeexperienceofTApsychotherapywithaCTAandothermodalitieswithinUKCPareacceptable.SyllabusAfullsyllabusisincludedineachofourcoursehandbooks,whichareprovidedatthebeginningoftraining.Pleasenotethatcoursecontentissubjecttochangeinordertokeepuptodatewithcurrentthinking.

TheDiplomainIntegrative&TransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapeuticCounsellingisrunoverthreeyears,consistingof10weekendstrainingperyear.TheFoundationYearcountsasthefirstyearofthisdiploma.OngainingthisqualificationyoumaydecidetoworktowardsgainingregistrationandaccreditationwithUKCP.

Yourprogressthroughthisprocesswillbereviewedonanannualbasisinyourcontractualrelationshipwithyourtrainer.YoumaydualregisterforthisDiplomaandalsothe4yearPsychotherapyDiplomaifyouareunsurewhichrouteyouwouldliketotake.

DiplomainIntegrative&TransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapy

TheDiplomainIntegrative&TransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapyisrunoverfouryears,consistingof10weekendstrainingperyear.TheFoundationYearcountsasthefirstyearofthisdiploma.ThiscanbefollowedbyaprocessofexampreparationtowardsbecomingaCertifiedTransactionalAnalyst(CTA).Thiscanbedoneatyourpreferredpacebutcanonlybedonefollowingcompletionofthefirstfouryears.Thelengthoftimethistakesdependsontheneedsoftheindividualandcanbediscussedwithyourtrainer.AlternativelyyoumaydecidetoworktowardsgainingregistrationandaccreditationwithUKCP.

AdvancedTraining–PsychotherapeuticCounsellingorPsychotherapyRoutesThesecondandthirdyearsofthepsychotherapeuticcounsellingandthepsychotherapytrainingareinagrouptogether.Differentiationisthroughtheassessmentprocessandcourserequirements.Pleaseseerelevanthandbooksforfurtherdetails.Tostartyoursecondyearoftraining,youwillhavecompletedtheFoundationCertificateatthecentreorbeabletoAPLfromanotherTAPsychotherapycourse.

YoucanregisterwithUKCPand/orUKATAascandidatesintrainingatthisstage.

Yoursecondandthirdyearwillfocusonthedevelopmentofcounsellingandpsychotherapyskills.Thetheorywillbediverseandindepth.Thefirstofthetwodayseachweekendwillbetheorybased,theseconddaywillincorporateapresentationrelatedtoTAbyatraineeandstructuredgrouptasks.Therewillalsobeaprocessgroupwhichwillbefacilitatedforgroupprocessissuesandfortraineestoexperiencerelationshipsatthislevel.

Whenyouhavebeenassessedascompetenttopracticebythecourseleaderyoucanestablishaplacementfortherapeuticpracticeunderthesupervisionofthepracticecounsellorandapplyfortheinternscheme,inwhichyoucanchargeanominalfeetoclients.Thismaybedoneearlierifthetraineeisalreadyaqualifiedcounsellor.

YouwillbeexpectedtoundergosupervisionandpersonaltherapyinaccordancewithUKCPrequirements.Youwillkeepaclinicallogandatraininglog,alongwithaprocessjournal.

Thetrainingwillbedeliveredbyaregulartrainingteamaswellasvisitingtrainers.

Aspartofthistrainingyouwillalsoberequiredtoattendanationalconferenceor3regionalconferencesoverthecourseofthethreeyears.

OncompletionofthethreeyearstrainingandfulfilmentofallcourserequirementsyouwillbeawardedtheDiplomainIntegrative&TransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapeuticCounsellingandmaywishtocontinuetoworktowardsregistrationandaccreditationwithUKCP.

(TobecomeanaccreditedpsychotherapeuticcounsellorwithUKCPthereisaminimumrequirementof450traininghours,450supervisedclinicalpracticehoursoveraminimumof3years,105hoursofpersonaltherapyandcompletionofaViva*–seecoursehandbookformoredetails)*Vivaconsistsofa10minutetranscriptwitha2000wordprocessanalysisand1houroralexam/discussionwithapanelof2peopleAdvancedTraining–PsychotherapyrouteTraineeswhohaveenrolledforthefouryearDiplomainIntegrativeandTransactionalAnalysisPsychotherapywillhavecompletedthefirstthreeyearsoftrainingincorporatingtheFoundationYearandtwofurtheryearsofstudyalongsidethepsychotherapeuticcounsellingtrainingroute.YouwillbeawardedtheDiplomainIntegrative&TAPsychotherapeuticCounselling(oncompletionofalltrainingrequirements)andwillcontinueontoyourfourthyearoftraining.Thefourthyearisastand-aloneyearwhereyouwillstudypsychotherapyinmoredepth.Youwillspecificallyfocusonmoreindepthassessment,diagnosis,treatmentplanning,supervisoryandprocessaspectsofpsychotherapy;considerpsychopathologywithintherapeuticpracticeaswellasmentalhealthandwellbeing;workwithdeconfusion,transferenceandcounter-transferenceatadeeperrelationallevelwithinthetherapeuticrelationship;evaluateandcritiqueapproachestoresearchandgenerateanddevelopresearchideasandprojects.

Aswithpreviousyearsoftraining,theformatoftheweekendwillbethesamewiththefirstdayoftheweekendtrainingbeingtheorybasedandtheseconddayfocusingmoreonindividualisedprocess.

Byyear4youwillbecompetentenoughtoconsiderprivatepracticeshouldyouwish.Competencywillbeanongoingevaluatedprocessbetweenthetraineeandthesupervisor.

Aspartofthisyear’strainingyouwillalsoberequiredtocompleteamentalhealthfamiliarisationplacement(PleaseseecoursehandbookandTheECPTMentalHealthFamiliarisationPolicyforfurtherdetails).Youmaycompletethisplacementatanytimeduringthe4yearsoftrainingshouldyouwishto.

PersonalTherapyTraineeswantingtocompletetheDiplomainIntegrative&TAPsychotherapeuticCounsellingwillneedtoevidence105hoursoftherapyinordertoqualify,traineeswantingtocompletetheDiplomainIntegrative&TAPsychotherapywillneedtoevidence160hoursofpersonaltherapyandtraineesonthefullCTAPsychotherapytrainingroutewillneedtoevidence160hoursofpersonaltherapyoverthefouryearsoftheirtraining.

UKCPrequirethattheexperienceoftherapybecongruentwiththepsychotherapyinwhichatraineeistrainingandthatthetherapistbeUKCPregistered.AstraightforwardapproachtothiscongruenceandregistrationwouldbethattraineeshaveanexperienceofTApsychotherapywithaCTA.and other modalities within UKCP are acceptable.
