A ll of the Schools that are proud to bear the name Harrow

are also proud that there is no “typical Harrovian”. A favourite School song celebrates the fact that “the range of Harrow” is a broad one: “Welcome poet and statesman too...”

A list of famous Old Harrovians might indeed name many statesmen, including Sir Winston Churchill, Jawaharlal Nehru, and King Hussein of Jordan; poets and writers as diverse as Byron, Richard Brinsley Sheridan, Anthony Trollope; Lord Rayleigh, the physicist and Nobel prize-winner; Fox Talbot, the inventor of photography; the archaeologist Sir Arthur Evans and James Bruce the explorer; Sir William Jones, father of philology and twenty winners of the Victoria Cross.

ii. Benedict Cumberbatch, actor

iii. James Blunt, musician

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) at Harrow Beijing encourages students to be happy, independent and motivated. The teachers plan for learning using the Early Years Curriculum Guidance for England and Wales. Alongside normal classroom activities, Pre-Nursery, Nursery and Reception children enjoy lessons from subject specialists in Physical Education (PE), Music and Mandarin.

Early Years

In Years 1 to 5, children continue to develop essential literacy and numeracy skills. Great emphasis is placed on the enjoyment of books and the teaching of reading and writing.

As they progress through the school, students are also introduced to a greater element of specialist teaching including Mandarin, Music, PE, Computing, Drama and Spanish.

Pre-Prep Phase(Years 1 to 5)

Academic Progression Lower School

Modelled on the best practice of British Preparatory Schools and International Middle Schools, the Prep Phase is a blend of specialist-based subject teaching within the security of the Upper School. At the core of the Prep Phase are the subjects of English, Mathematics and Science. The students are also exposed to a wide and varied curriculum including: Art, Drama, History, Geography, Computing, Design and Technology, Mandarin, Music, PE and Sports, as well as the Modern Foreign Language of Spanish.

Prep Phase(Years 6 to 8)

Our curriculum in Year 9 is designed to build on the learning and skills students have developed in the Prep Phase, and equip them for success in public examinations. Many of our courses take themes and skills from International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and introduce them early to students. This provides a strong bridge into Year 10 and ensures students are well prepared to follow the courses of their choice. In Year 10 and Year 11 students follow the GCSE and/or IGCSE courses.

The Senior School(Years 9 to 11)

After IGCSE, students move into the next phase of the School and prepare themselves for life at University. This is a two-year programme in Advanced Subsidiary Level (AS Level) and Advanced Level (A Level) study.

The Sixth Form(Years 12 & 13)

A s members of FOBISIA (Federation of British

International Schools in Asia) and ISAC (International Schools Athletic Conference), we are able to offer students a diverse range of competitive opportunities throughout Asia.

We have had recent sporting trips to Thailand, Malaysia and within China, as well as hosting International Schools from Korea, Thailand, Malaysia and Hong Kong at our campus.

All students from the Pre-Prep Phase to the Sixth Form successfully compete on a seasonal basis in football, volleyball, basketball, netball, rugby, track & field athletics, swimming and tee ball as well as handball, tennis, table tennis, badminton and cross country running.

The school has an active Drama Enrichment programme which teaches students performance skills and exposes them to other important aspects of production such as lighting and sound design, stage management, costume and set design, writing and direction.

MusicEvery child is offered the opportunity to learn a musical instrument. Over 10 instruments are taught in several dedicated practice rooms, supporting a number of instrumental and vocal ensembles.

Drama

Students are given the opportunity to explore a wide variety of media and techniques as a vehicle for expression, passion and emotion, and a means of challenging themselves and the world around them. In addition to practical skills, students will gain an appreciation and understanding of art, design and craft from the past and present and from a range of cultures.

A notable part of Harrow education is

the annual week long Personal Development programme in the Lower School and the Expeditions week in the Upper School.

These programmes are planned to give our students growing levels of skills and experiences, from the younger years through to the Sixth Form. Expeditions give the students an opportunity to pursue the themes of Challenge, Service, Creative Expression, Teamwork, Leadership and Charity in unfamiliar environments.

Expeditions S tudents take part in activities four times each week.

Some of the activities offered across the School include: cricket, cross-country running, jazz band, rock climbing, student magazines, tennis, touch rugby, yoga, DJ club, International Award, musical theatre club, ukulele club, chess, choirs, community outreach, orchestra, cooking, dance, golf, debating, drama clubs, environmental club, Chinese art and painting, psychology club, Chinese drums, steel pans and martial arts; as well as the chance for students to train and practise for school teams, musical ensembles and drama productions.

Regular Critical Lunches are held across the School, where we encourage students to partake in a discussion with a visiting expert, such as a novelist, diplomat or human rights specialist.

W e enjoy a very close relationship with our

parents, and keep in touch through our digital platforms, termly tutor consultations and reports, and whole School events.

Importantly, every parent and staff member is automatically a “Friend of Harrow” when they join the School.

Through the Friends of Harrow, parents hold events to welcome new parents, help organise the School fairs, and more formal events, run cultural visits for parents and staff, and facilitate communication with all the different communities of the school.

Although at core a parent and staff body, the term “Friends of Harrow” extends to the many professionals in the wider community who support the School.
