WelcomeThis prospectus provides you with the information you need to help make choices about studying at Greenbank College. We have recently invested £500,000 in creating 4 new classrooms to extend provision and teaching areas. Students also have access to the excellent facilities available at Greenbank Sports Academy.

We hold the Matrix quality standard, which confirms that our Information, Advice and Guidance service is impartial and designed to meet your personal aspirations and circumstances. We will work with you to create an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) whilst you are at College. Your course of study will comprise a main work related subject, English and maths if you have not already achieved grade 9 to 4 (formerly grade A* to C), employability skills, a work placement and enrichment activities. Your programme is designed to support your progression into work, an apprenticeship or supported internship, higher level training or University, volunteering and independent living.

Our Students’ Council helps to organise college, community and charity events and we would be delighted if you choose to get involved.

Our team of over 90 staff will help you make the most of your time at College.

Student CouncilAs a member of the Student Council you will have the opportunity to recommend improvements at college and organise college, community and charity events. Get involved and have your say.

Life at College

Student AmbassadorsHelp spread the word by becoming a college Student Ambassador. Your role will be to help out at Open Events by speaking with prospective students and showing them around the college, help staff at external events or you could be a spokesperson for your department.

National Citizenship ServiceThe National Citizenship Service (NCS) Programme is a voluntary, personal and social development programme for young people aged 16 - 17 years old. We are working in partnership with Everton in the Community to offer an NCS programme.

Campus FacilitiesSalon HQ offers haircuts, styling and colouring by our Level 1, 2 and 3 students. There is a gym located in Greenbank Sports Academy which is also open to the public. You can access the gym outside of lesson times for a reduced rate. If you want a bit of quiet time, then The Hub is an ideal study area. Free Wi-Fi available throughout the campus.

FundraisingYou are encouraged to get involved in raising funds for charities such as Children in Need, Comic Relief or Sports Relief. This could mean helping run a stall selling donated items, selling raffle tickets or buying cakes!

Places to EatTwo cafés are available to use during breaks and lunch time. The college canteen offers great value-for-money meals and snacks freshly prepared by catering students. Time Out Café is located in Greenbank Sports Academy and serves hot and cold

Parent & Guardian InformationWe understand that going to college is a big step for your son or daughter. Our experienced support staff are always available to assist them whilst they are at college.

Information, Advice and Guidance Our experienced recruitment and guidance staff are always available to help your son or daughter make clear informed choices about learning opportunities and career pathways. This free service is Matrix accredited and offers:

Current information on learning opportunities, entry requirements and progression routes.

Referral for assessments and taster days to give your son or daughter a chance to try out their course choice.

Advice and referral for in-learning support including learning support, personal care, access, transport, childcare, benefits and welfare.

Signposting and referral service to other learning provision.

One-to-one careers guidance interview.

Help to Find Work It is important that your son or daughter gains work-related knowledge and experience. We can help in the following ways:

Organise a relevant work placement to support learning.

Provide an Employability course (Entry 2 to Level 1) or help to improve employability skills as part of their Study Programme.

Arrange employer talks and workshops. Assist with creating CVs or completing job

application forms.

Student Welfare and Support Our Student Welfare Coordinator works directly with tutors, learning support, guidance staff and others to deal with any concerns that you/your son or daughter has, which may affect their learning or time at College. We have links to many specialist agencies who offer free confidential support and advice in areas such as counselling, substance misuse, mental health, physical health and well-being.

Welfare Rights You, your son or daughter can make an appointment to see an independent Welfare Rights Adviser who can offer free advice and information about benefits and other financial matters.

Safeguarding We are committed to safeguarding and have a team of trained staff available to support your son or daughter with any issues as they arise. All college staff have undertaken safeguarding awareness training and a member of Council of Management has overall responsibility for safeguarding.

Prevent Duty It is part of our statutory duty to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and radicalisation. As a college we promote British Values - democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Accessible furniture and equipment in classrooms, including height adjustable desks.

Specialist IT equipment to suit your son or daughter’s needs (assessment based) including screen reader software, speech to text software, large screens, mouse and keyboard alternatives and IT technical support to offer specific advice as needed.

Help with transport and independent travel (subject to assessment and availability).

Local OfferWe offer an inclusive environment for all and follow the principles set out in Chapter 7 of the SEND Code of Practice and we aim to offer:

An individual learning programme to young people aged 16 – 18 or up to 24 to those who have a disability and an EHC Plan.

Appropriate support for those who need it. Regular reviews of Individual Learning Plans (ILP)

Exercise, Fitness & Sport The Exercise, Fitness, Sport and Leisure industry has grown rapidly in recent years. Information TechnologyIn most office based settings, you will be expected to have good IT skills. We offer two routes on our iTQ courses. Office Applications will teach you how to use email, word processing, spreadsheet, presentation and database software. The Multimedia route focuses on packages for graphic and website design as well as using audio, presentation and DVD interface software. You can also undertake a range of other short courses such as safe personal use of social media as well as how it is used in business and how to use a 3D printer and laser cutter for small scale digital modelling.

HorticultureGardening work offers many tasks including planting and cultivating seeds, digging, weeding, pruning, identifying and controlling plant pests, etc. Jobs available may be paid or voluntary and include working in places such as private gardens, public parks and community gardens.

English English is really important in your day-to-day life, from texting your friends to applying for jobs, following information and reading instructions.

If you do not already have GCSE grade 9 to 4 (formerly grades A* to C) in English, you must continue lessons at college. You will be offered a course at a level that is right for you, which could be Everyday English, Functional Skills or GCSE English.

Everyday and Functional Skills courses will help you to develop your reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.

Based on previous exam results or following assessment you may be offered GCSE English. It can be studied over one or two years depending on your ability and requires considerable commitment. GCSE English covers fiction and imaginative writing, non-fiction and transactional writing as well as speaking and listening.

Maths Many job and course specifications list a Maths qualification as essential.

If you do not already hold a GCSE Maths at grade 9 to 4 (formerly grades A* to C) you must enrol on a Maths course. An initial assessment will indicate the correct level of Maths qualification for you.

Studying Maths alongside a work related course will help you to develop the skills that you need to carry out your chosen job role, for example, weighing ingredients in Catering or mixing colours correctly in Hairdressing.

We offer a range of Maths courses that will help you to become more confident when using numbers. Our pre-GCSE courses include Everyday Maths, Functional Skills and other stepping stone qualifications. Topics covered include money, time, measurements, ratios, working to scale, using statistical data and problem solving.

At GCSE level the topics will include fractions, decimals, percentages, algebra, geometry and probability. The GCSE curriculum can be over one or two years and requires a high degree of commitment.


Employability & Work PlacementsIt is important to develop the skills that will help you to find and keep a job or volunteering opportunity.

You will be offered an Employability qualification as part of your timetable if you are studying at Entry 3 or above. Examples of units include planning for progression, searching and applying for jobs, rights and responsibilities at work and interview skills.

You will also be given the opportunity to complete a work placement. This will be in a role which is relevant to your course.

We have excellent links with lots of employers including Alder Hey Hospital, Sefton Park Palm House, Liverpool One and local football clubs. We also invite employers into college to offer workshops throughout the year and during National Careers Week. You may also visit employers or attend job fairs. Progression from college is supported by our Moving On event to which we invite local organisations, companies and training providers to offer advice on what you can do once you leave college.

Enrichment & Personal DevelopmentNew experiences help you to develop and grow in confidence.

A wide range of opportunities are offered termly which can help you to meet new people, learn new skills and have fun.

Activities could include singing, drama, sport, outdoor pursuits or cookery – the choice is yours! Activities are offered half a day per week and are available subject to timetable.

Supported InternshipsA Supported Internship is a type of Study Programme specifically aimed at young people aged 16 – 24 who have an EHC Plan and who may need help to gain employment. It usually lasts for a year and consists of a work placement based at a partnering employer plus English, maths and employability qualifications personalised to each individual’s needs.

We are one of the educational partners for the Intern to Work Liverpool project which works together with employers to increase the number of young people with additional support needs in work.

Interns are currently working at the Marriott Hotel, National Museums Liverpool, the Holiday Inn, Liverpool City Council, Liverpool Women’s Hospital and local football clubs. We are continually growing these links with employers to offer more supported internships.

Other Courses & ProjectsHigher Education in Sport CoachingWe work in partnership with Liverpool John Moores University to offer a route to Higher Education with the opportunity to study Disability Sports Coaching and Development Foundation Degree. This is a two-year, full time course and is delivered primarily at Greenbank College.

The course is practical and includes a range of high quality work placements and work related learning with disability sport organisations. You can also undertake specific governing body coaching awards in addition to your degree.

There is a progression route onto Level 6 of LJMU’s BA (Hons) Sport Coaching programme which can lead to a wide range of exciting careers in community sport, private coaching, national governing bodies of sport or charitable/disability organisations.

New Futures ProgrammeThe New Futures programme is led by Greenbank College in partnership with VOLA, a consortium of voluntary community enterprise organisations. The programme offers support to people who are aged 16 – 24 and not in education, employment or training (NEET) or are 15 – 24 and at risk of becoming NEET. It is intended to be a stepping stone if you are not yet ready to move into employment, training or further education.

Participants will be given a comprehensive information, advice and guidance assessment and a personalised action plan.

Your personalised action plan could include: Accredited or non-accredited course Work related course tasters English and Maths Employability skills Work placement opportunities Advice and support from employers

You will have a Key Worker who will offer mentoring and support. This support will continue after progression to employment, further education, an apprenticeship or a traineeship.

Reviews will take place regularly to ensure personal targets are met and progression routes are achieved.

Financial Support

16 – 19 Bursary Fund (Vulnerable Students)You are eligible to apply for a bursary of up to £30 per week for courses which last 30 weeks or more (less for shorter courses) if you are aged over 16 and under 19 on 31 August and:

Are in care or a care leaver. In receipt of Income Support (or Universal Credit

in place of Income Support) in your own name or are a disabled student in receipt of both Disability Living Allowance (or new Personal Independence Payment - PIP) and Employment Support. Allowance (ESA) or Universal Credit in your own name.

You satisfy college attendance and behaviour criteria.

This bursary is paid in weekly instalments into your bank account.

Young Persons’ Discretionary Bursary Fund If you are facing genuine financial difficulties, you may be awarded a grant at our discretion (subject to making an application and availability of funding). This can be used, for example, to cover the cost of coming in to college or buying protective clothing.

You can apply for funds if: You are aged over 16 and under 19 on 31 August or aged up to 24 if you have an EHC Plan.

You satisfy college attendance and behaviour criteria.

Meal Vouchers We may also be able to support you by providing free meal vouchers (redeemable in the College Canteen or Time Out Café) for each full day that you are timetabled on your programme.

You are eligible if: You are aged over 16 and under 19 on 31 August or aged up to 24 if you have an EHC Plan.

And

Your parent or guardian must be in receipt of one of the following, Income Support, Universal Credit, Guarantee element of State Pension Credit, Income-Based Jobseekers Allowance, Child Tax Credit (annual gross income of no more than £16,190) Income-related Employment and Support Allowance, Support under part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999.

Help with Transport Costs The Young Persons’ Discretionary Bursary Fund may also support you if you are disabled and cannot travel independently to college, but where possible we will work with you and your family to offer travel training and encourage independent travel.

If you are in receipt of Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payment (PIP)mobility component, then you may be expected to make a monthly contribution towards any taxi costs. If you have a Motability car, you will be expected to make your own travel arrangements.

If you were eligible for assistance from your local authority to transport you to school, you may be eligible for continued support until you are 19.
