Greetings from Karnataka State Open University!!!

I welcome you to the family of students in Karnataka State Open University (KSOU), which was established in the year 1996 for the promotion of Education among all section of society. Without the constraints of space and time, Karnataka State Open University has established its quality and has reached the remote parts of Karnataka and beyond. As inscribed in its motto “Higher Education to All, Everywhere” the university has set itself an objective to reach the doorsteps of aspiring students in every nook and corner of not only the state, but throughout the country and abroad. The programs that are

innovative and relevant to the society are offered with moderate cost and modern facilities. Karnataka State Open University has also programs of IGNOU, to cater to the needs of students in various fields. Accessibility, quality, flexibility and relevance are the major strengths of KSOU, whereas creation, management and dissemination of knowledge are its main goals. Flexible mode to teaching represents a major element of our programs. In order to achieve these goals, we have established 7 Regional Centres at Bangalore, Davanagere, Dharwad, Gulbarga, Mangalore, Shimoga and Delhi, 110 UG Study Centres, 10 B.Ed Study Centres, 08 Special B.Ed. Study Centres, 08 M.Ed. Study Centres and 403 Partner Institution Study Centres. Contact Programs are conducted regularly with the involvement of experienced staff and expertise in the concerned fields is tapped for the benefit of the students, periodically. We are proud to announce that the last year the enrolment was more than 1,00,000.

Karnataka State Open University plays a significant role in promoting the desired growth of higher education through Open-distance learning system (ODL). Our country will be a super power only when it achieves the targeted growth of higher education, which it achieves the targeted growth of higher education, which is possible by the intervention of open and distance learning. The University having a strong genesis of the Institute of Correspondence Course and Continuing Course and Continuing Education (ICC&CE), a pioneer in the Asian continent, was established in 1996 under the state enactment – KSOU Act 1992. As lucidly inscribed in its motto “Higher Education to Everyone Everywhere,” KSOU is evolving the strategies to reach the door-steps of the students not only in the state of Karnataka but also in the country and abroad. For this purpose, KSOU has established regional centres, even in abroad.

During 2009-2010 the student enrollment in the University has crossed 1.00 lakh. During 2010-2011 the University is expected to enroll over 2.00 lakh students which are possible through its state-of-art infrastructure, committed staff, and managerial skills. Our community of learners includes Academicians, Administrators, Executives, Officers of Central and State Governments, Politicians, Legal Experts, Artists, Farmers, Writers, Media Persons, Technicians, and others whose age group ranges from 18 to 80 years.

The University encourages the students of Schedule Castes and Schedule Tribes by way of Fee Reimbursement under SC/ST government scholarships. It also encourages the students of economically weaker sections under “Muktha Sanjivini”. Prasaaraanga is playing a significant role in promoting the field of literature through the publications of great works of renowned persons.

National – International Recognition:

Karnataka State Open University (KSOU) was established on 1st June 1996 with the assent of His Excellency Honorable Governor of Karnataka as a full fledged University in the academic year 1996 vide Government notification no ED 1 UOV 95 dated 12th February 1996 (KSOU Act – 1992). The act was promulgated with the object to incorporate an Open University at the State level for the introduction and promotion of Open University and Distance Education systems in the education pattern of the State and for the Co-ordination and determination of standard of such systems.

With the virtue of KSOU Act of 1992, Karnataka State Open University is empowered to establish, maintain or recognize Colleges, Regional Centres and Study Centres at such places in Karnataka and may also open outside Karnataka at such places as it deems fit.

Distance Education Council (DEC), New Delhi, has accorded recognition to Karnataka State Open University, Mysore for offering Programmes / Courses approved by the Statutory bodies of the University. Karnataka State Open University is a recognized University of Distance Education Council under the aegis of Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) (Revised notification F. No. DEC/OU/Recog./2008).

Karnataka State Open University is a regular member of the Association of Indian Universities (AIU), New Delhi since 1999 (No. EV/11(80)/99/203935-4172).

Karnataka State Open University is a permanent member of Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU), London, United Kingdom since 1999. Its member code is: ZKASOPENUINI.

Karnataka State Open University is a permanent member of Asian Association of Open Universities (AAOU), Beijing, China since 1999.

Academic DeliverySelf Learning Material (SLM): The Study Materials are prepared in self learning format. The SLMs are different from the text books. As per guidelines of DEC, New Delhi, The Programs are divided into a Course and the Course is subdivided into Blocks. Each Block has 3 to 5 Units and each Block covers 1 credit which is equivalent to 30 hrs. of study by a student comprising all activities i.e.; Reading and Theory Counseling The University has its own network of Program Study Centres all over India. For the convenience of learners the Program Study Centres will provide Theory Counseling and Library facilities to the learners.

Study Materials for all enrolled students will be provided by IITT.

Personal Contact Programme (Counseling): PCP Classes (Face to Face Mode/Flexi Time) will be conducted in respective study centres.

Technology Adaptation: PCP classes will be conducted by using Modern Audio Video aids at Flexi Time.

Practical & Training Work: University has its own set up of Work Centres all over India, which are attached to the Program Study Centres as per requirement of the learners. The Work Centre will provide Practical Counseling to the learners.

Evaluation Procedure: Evaluation for each course covers two aspects:

Internal assessment (IA) through assignments with a weightage of 25% Term-end examination having a weightage of 75% Each Paper will be of 100 Marks.Minimum for pass in each course is 40%

Assignment: Students are required to submit assignments according to the prescribed schedule before the term-end examination. In case, the student has not submitted the assignment within the prescribed date, the result of such candidate will be declared on the basis of the theory marks only.

Study CentresKSOU is committed to cater to the requirements of the students on the basis of conventional and non –conventional methods of teaching and learning. The Study Centres are established to provide face to face interaction between the students and KSOU on all aspects of the academic Programme. These Centres provide weekend counseling, library facilities, and other information. These will be available to the students during their visits to the study centres.

All the important communications are sent to the co-ordinator of the centres and the co-ordinator will display a copy of such circular/notification on the notice board of the study Centre for the benefit of all the students. You are therefore advised to keep in touch with your nearest study Centre.

Information with regard to submission of assignments, examination forms, issue of admission tickets, examination time-table, declaration of results etc., can be obtained from respective Co-ordinator of the study centres.

The University will send the marks card to the candidate through registered post after announcing the examination results on the Karnataka State Open University website. Candidates have provision to apply for re-totaling, within 30 days from the date of dispatch of marks card from the University. In this regard, application may be submitted to the Registrar (Evaluation), Karnataka State Open University, Manasagangotri, Mysore-6, through registered post within 30 days from the date of dispatch of marks card

To be eligible to appear at the term-end examination in any course, the students are required to fulfill the following conditions:

a. They should have paid the Programme / Tuition fee due for that year b. They should have opted and pursued the prescribed Programme c. They should submit the examination form on time d.The admission to the course should have been

approved by the University.

The Open-Distance-Learning (ODL) system is a unique and challenging mode of education offered at the University level. This system provides ample opportunities for those who desire to have University education at their place of work or residence. This method is popularly known as Distance Education. It is perhaps the only way to meet the ever-increasing demand for Higher Education especially in a developing country like India.

Examination Time-table: Schedule of Examination dates indicating the date and time will be sent to all the Regional Centres/Examination Centres within 15 days before the commencement of Examination. The students can obtain the detailed Time-Table from their nearest Regional Centre or Examination Centre. They can also log on to the University site No individual intimation will be sent to the student regarding Examination Time Table.

Academic RegulationsGeneral Regulations

A candidate has to register for all the subjects of a semester to which he/she is eligible at the beginning of each semester according to the scheduled dates.Fee Once Paid will not be refunded under any circumstanceA candidate is permitted to register for the next higher semester after completion of a semester course, irrespective of the results in his previous semester papers.The candidate can continue to register for higher semesters in a similar way along with his registration in failed subjects of earlier semesters for that degree.A candidate has to finish the degree programme within twice the duration of the academic programme for that degree.The fee for appearing in the University examination will be as per guidelines communicated to the Study Centers by Indian Institute of Textile Training / KSOU for repeaters and examination fees as approved by KSOU for the all the subjects of the semesters which is collected along with the fees while registering for a semester.A candidate can register for improvement examination in his/her term-end University Examination for any subject in Post Graduate degree program only.

Evaluation Systems

Karnataka State Open University has developed the following set of norms and procedure to conduct the examinations

Candidate shall register for all subjects (whole examination) when he/she appears for the examination for the first time (during the year of admission).

Depending upon the quality, performance and the number of students enrolled, the university will identify the Examination centres from among the study centres. In addition to these Examination Centres, the University conducts examination in other Institutions also which will be notified in the examination fee circular, time table etc. If any changes are made regarding examination centres, the same will be updated on the KSOU website. Supplementary examinations will have lesser number of examination centres depending on the strength of the students.

No Candidate shall be declared to have passed in any course unless he / she obtains 35% in the aggregate of term-end examination and internal assessment put together for all the subjects

Exemption is granted in courses in which a minimum of 40% is secured

University will declare the grade of successful candidates on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidates both in Grade and Class.

Lateral Entry/ Exemption:

Credit System:

1. Students who have passed Diploma in any branch of Engineering from State/Central Govt. recognized Technical Board / Institution / University or Three Year B.Sc. in any stream with subject as Mathematics shall be allowed direct admission in 2nd year i.e. (III semester) of B. Tech. Such candidate may also change their branch of study at B. Tech level.

2. 12th Technical or I.T.I or M.C.V.C or N.C.V.T (should be 2 Years) or equivalent can join any branch in the 2nd year (III semester) of Diploma irrespective of their trade.

3.BCA/B.SC (IT/CS/AIT), B.E IN (IT/CS/ET), B.TECH IN (IT/CS/EXC) or equivalent can directly join for MCA 2nd Year.

4. Exemptions may be granted in paper(s) or semester(s) depending on the subject(s) cleared by the candidate by actually passing of the subject(s) and successfully completing the exam, which include those subjects from the recognized Institution / colleges / University. Exemptions if eligible are not to be taken for 'granted' but must be asked for while submitting the Registration and Exam form along with the attested copies of relevant certificates, mark sheets and exemption fee. Exemptions granted will be shown only in the mark list of the examination sent to the candidate. No separate individual intimation will be given.

5. The student who is doing similar courses from a recognized University/ Board of Education/Institution will be allowed to join the next semester for the same course but in such case the student shall be appearing for the papers which were not covered in the previous semester but the student has to study at least for two years in the University for the award of certificate.

KSOU follows a credit system that is based on the time factor involved in studying. One credit is equivalent to 30 study hours inclusive of all learning activities. Different programmes have different credit requirements. Students have the right to collect credits at their own pace, convenience and according to their own capability. KSOU also provides a credit transfer facility whereby credits may be transferred from any other University to KSOU after fulfilling the necessary requirements.

The rules and regulation in force at the time a student joins a course shall hold good only for the examination held during or at the end of academic session. Nothing in these ordinances shall be deemed to debar the University from amending the ordinances subsequently and the amended ordinances i.e. if any shall apply to all the students whether old or new.

Registration / Enrollment:

Candidates shall abide by the Rules & Regulations in force and those that may be issued by the University from time to time. False declaration of Age, Qualification etc., by the candidate will disqualify his/her admission to the University. Candidates who have not completed their qualifying exams, or who have appeared in the final exams and awaiting results can also enroll for the University Programme. However, the result should be submitted to the University before the first semester exam. Incomplete admission form in any respect and without requisite fee will be summarily rejected. Candidates seeking admission should pay the Programme/Tuition, Registration and Examination fees in full at the Study Centre of the University. Please enclose a set of attested photocopies of marks cards, certificates, date of birth certificate and other documents with the application form duly filled-in and submit the same on or before the due/last date as mentioned in the advertisement at the Study Centre of the University. No request for change of Stream/Programme will be solicited hence forth. The study centre should keep on visiting the web-site regularly. In case of any discrepancy, they should bring into the notice of the University within a week, failing so, the university will not be responsible. The study centre should follow all the deadlines strictly given on the website. The University does not take the responsibility for postal delays or loss of any document or letter in transit. Candidates have to submit attested photocopy of all the documents relevant to education qualification (Xth onwards) and the date of birth proof duly attested by Gazetted Officer / Principal of School or college. The attested photocopy should be verified with original and signed & stamped by Centre Head of the Study Centre of the University. The University reserves the right to change the course curriculum whenever it will be felt that the change/ modification could best serve the interest of students and the potential employers from time to time. In case of change of address, the Academic Partner IITT, Tirupur should be informed at least four weeks in advance to avoid any misplacement of the study material and any other correspondence. The students will be governed by latest regulations applicable to them during academic year. Money orders, IPO, or any other mode of payment directly to the University will not be accepted. The University will not be responsible for any loss through such mode of payments. No Candidate is permitted to pursue two degree programmes simultaneously of this or any other University.

If a candidate gets admitted to more than one post graduate or degree programme, the University shall cancel his/her admission to one of the programmes, which she/he had joined without giving prior notice.

Any student who is found to have concealed information about her/his age, qualification etc. or violated any provisions, is liable to be removed from the rolls forthwith and will be deprived of the benefits of attendance, examination, results, awards etc., in the programme concerned, apart from appropriate disciplinary action and imposition of penalties.

Indian Textile Industry is one of the leading textile industries in the world. Though was predominantly unorganized industry even a few years back, but the scenario started changing after the economic liberalization of Indian economy in 1991. The opening up of economy gave the much-needed thrust to the Indian textile industry, which has now successfully become one of the largest in the world.

India textile industry largely depends upon the textile manufacturing and export. It also plays a major role in the economy of the country. India earns about 27% of its total foreign exchange through textile exports. Further, the textile industry of India also contributes nearly 14% of the total industrial production of the country. It also contributes around 3% to the GDP of the country. Indian textile industry is also the largest in the country in terms of employment generation. It not only generates jobs in its own industry, but also opens up scopes for the other ancillary sectors. Indian textile industry currently generates employment to more than 35 million people. It is also estimated that, the industry will generate 12 million new jobs by the year 2011.

Indian textile industry is one of the leading in the world. Currently it is estimated to be around US$ 52 billion and is also projected to be around US$ 115 billion by the year 2012. The current domestic market of textile in India is expected to be increased to US$ 60 billion by 2012 from the current US$ 34.6 billion. The textile export of the country was around US$ 19.14 billion in 2006-07, which saw a stiff rise to reach US$ 22.13 in 2007-08. The share of exports is also expected to increase from 4% to 7% within 2012.
