Props make storytelling come alive Twins Adan and Ivan (we’re not sure which is shown at right) are having fun playing with the new early literacy manipulatives and puppets that Read for Life donated to Migrant Education’s preschool program this summer. Teacher Rosa Arellano said that the puppets are a great addition to her reading program. With their “F” for Farm unit, the preschoolers could understand the differences in color and size among pigs, horses, and tractors. Teachers implement these visually stimulating 3-D hands-on “props” to illustrate what they’re reading about, and when they’re singing “Old McDonald Had a Farm, storytelling comes alive. The puppets can also be used for counting, sorting, sounds, and letters. "If it's not in their hands, it's not in their brains," said Mimi Boyd, a RFL member who got the props donated, explaining how much more effective visuals make storytelling. Mimi sells these types of educational toys and was able to receive a substantial donation to RFL from one of her major suppliers who was terminating his business. Read for Life plans to donate these one-of-a- kind, hands-on props to the Migrant directors and teachers for seven of their preschool programs. Subscribe Past Issues RSS Translate
