-Make A Difference!

Background:

In first phase students created dustbins from the waste containers and place them in various classrooms and inside the school premises. Also they created small play regarding the awareness about following issues:

1. Using dustbins2. Not to waste food and water3. Personal Hygiene

Observations after first stage:

As during first stage focus was more on building awareness among the students themselves and role they can also play to spread the same message. The students echoed and reflected the JOY of being able to GIVE something to their senior grades.

The students were exposed to:

• Brainstorming and ideating on various things they can do for Design for Giving contest.

• creating value out of waste products• creating small scripts for plays ( with Teacher assistance)• performing the plays in senior grades

Impact:

This process has greatly helped in imparting the core values of Team work, critical thinking, resourcefulness and sense of possibilities. Given the fact the average age of my students is 7 years, this exercise was really fruitful for them too build self-confidence.

I have observed that in my classroom the cleanliness and overall attitude towards hygiene as such has increased beyond my expectations.

Challenges:

• As my students are in 2nd standard, the scope of work and impact outside the classroom was limited.

• Managing the students and simultaneously documenting the process in a comprehensive way was a challenge.

Second Phase:

Objectives:

• To spread awareness and take constructive measures to bring about change in Cleanliness and Hygiene condition around school vicinity.

• Students ( given their age ) will act to inspire the community to take steps to improve the basic amenities, cleanliness and hygiene condition.

Scope of Work:

• Awareness campaign/presentation for parents and the community as such.• Small skits/plays in the community ( with assistance of teacher)• Survey on availability of basic civil amenities and information regarding their

living habits to create a database for future work.

Implementation plan:

• During parent’s teacher meeting, a presentation on cleanliness and hygiene will be given which will involve students to create a personal touch.

• Students will write a letter to the concerned authorities to bring to their notice various issues regarding cleanliness and hygiene.

• Students will prepare and then perform a play on ‘Importance of Good Habits’ on 26th January. It will help them to reach out to a large number of audiences.

• Students will form questions to be asked in the survey. Teacher will help in facilitating the process of formulating a questionnaire.

Time line:

11th to 16th January: Formulation of questionnaire

6th to 25th January: Preparation of play/skits

18th to 23rd January: Letter to concerned authorities

The date for Parents-Teacher meeting will be decided once the school reopens on 4th

January.

Finance and logistics:

As of now the project is at planning phase. I am not in position to specifically define the expenditure to execute the overall project.But, the project would require assistance from Walt Disney for comprehensive visual documentation of the process and project as such. This would help to measure the impact and extrapolate the idea at much higher level in future.
