Prophecies Surrounding Jesus’ Death, Burial and
Resurrection
Triumphal Entry and Betrayal
• Zechariah 9:9 foretold the triumphal entry on the foal of a donkey (Matthew 21:1-11)
• The betrayal– Psalm 41:9; 55:12-14 By a friend (John 13:18-
30)– Zechariah 11:12-13 The purchase price which
was thrown down in the temple and used to purchase a potter’s field (Matthew 26:14-15; 27:3-10)
The Arrest and Trial
• Zechariah 13:7 foretold the Christ would be forsaken by his disciples (Matthew 26:31, 55-56)
• The anointed would be accused by false witnesses (Psalm 27:12; 35:11; Matthew 26:57-62; Mark 14:55-61)
• Christ’s judgment was taken away through an illegal trial at night (Isaiah 53:8)– He offered no defense, though on trial for his life
(Isaiah 53:7; Matthew 26:57-68; 27:11-14; Luke 23:1-11; John 19:1-13)
The Cruel Sacrifice
• The Messiah would be scourged and they would spit in his face (Isaiah 50:6; Matthew 26:67-68; 27:26-31)
• Death by crucifixion (Psalm 22:16, 18; John 19:23-24)
• Offered gall and vinegar (Psalm 69:21; Matthew 27:34; John 19:28-29)
• Enduring cruel mocking and his side pierced (Psalm 22:6-11; 34:20; Zechariah 12:10; Matthew 27:39-44)
The Piercing and Burial
• The Singer of Israel knew he would be pierced and not one bone would be broken– Psalm 22:16– Psalm 34:20– Zechariah 12:10– John 19:33-37
• He should have been buried among the wicked, but his body was placed in a rich man’s tomb (Isaiah 53:9; Matthew 27:57-60; John 19:38-42)
God Foresaw the Resurrection
• His body would not see corruption (Psalm 16:10)
• He would see his seed after being put to death (Isaiah 53:10; Hebrews 2:10-13; 1 Peter 1:22-23; 3:18-22)
• He would bring many sons to glory (Isaiah 53:11; Acts 2:38-41; 4:4, 14; 6:1, 7; 8:4-8)
The Ascension
• Psalm 68:18 foretold his ascension – The apostles would not have been amazed
and disheartened if they had known of these verses (Acts 1:9-11; 2:34a; Hebrews 1:13)
• After he ascended, the Christ would sit down and wait for the day all would bow to his authority (Psalm 110:1; Acts 2:34b)
