FOREWORD

In compiling this Class Book, the Editors of the Class of 1923, aim to

make it a souvenir of the four years of High School life. Student days

are ever sunny; hence the jovial spirit which prevades the "Memento."

To all who have so willingly and generously helped in preparing this book,

we, the Editors, render thanks.

FRESHMAN YEAR

On September 5, 1919, an anxious crowd of sixty boys and girls as-sembled in Rooms 9-10-11, ____to have conferred upon them the high honorof being Freshmen in the W. H. S. We were heartily received by ourfriends and Principal Harold Wright.

The first few days went by quickly, and after we became accustomedto our schedule and the routine of high school life, we held our firstclass meeting- under the supervision of our section-room teacher, MissLouise G. Fenton. The following officers were elected: President, FrancisDeschene; Vice-President, Henry Sullivan, who because of his removalfrom town, was succeeded by Dudley Atwood; Secretary, Lois Doolittle;and Treasurer, Anthony Roberts.

With our officers at hand, our first class party at Community Hall, early in the Fall, started us on our social activities The party was a greatsuccess, not only as far as the entertainment and refreshments were con-cerned, but what a crowd we had!

Among other items of interest, we won the first prize for selling thegreatest number of B B. tickets. The prize, yes it was some prize, waspresented to us in the "Old gymn" by Messrs. Keilty and Hickox. A cheapwindmill and cart! What a blow!

When the snow came, we topped things off with a sleight ride to Beth-lehem. How exciting! It was a beautiful night, too!

Next came the A. A. party. No one could play an instrument, butmusical talent didn't stand in the way so we headed the bill with a "JazzBand." Verpillot didn't wait for the "Overture," but headed the gangoff the stage, banging the drum with violence. Remember the quartet;Roberts, Govang, Pete Lund and Seymour ? Yes, and they were good, too!For all our efforts and foolishness, we received second prize.

It was now drawing near the end of the year. The Seniors, the Classof 1920, were to leave us, so we gave a party in their honor.

It was now time for examinations and we were no longer "Grassy"Freshmen, but "Sassy" Sophomores.

"That's all there is; there is no more."

SOPHOMORE YEAR

Class Officers

President, Harold McCleary Secretary, Lois Doolittle

Vice-President, Anthony Roberts Treasurer—F. Deschene

After an enjoyable vacation, a group of 43 Sophomores, assembled inRoom 10 with Miss Fenton, our friend and room-teacher.

This year proved to be even more interesting than the former one.We started off by holding a Class Hike, October 9, to the "WatervilleCaves." With occasional parodies by Govang and his fellow singers and afew narrow escapes from sliding off the side of the mountain, we all en-joyed a real good hike. "Hot Dogs," "Sandwiches," "Marshmallows" and"Pop Corn." Oh, what feelings! After a few wild games of "Button, But-ton, who's got the Button?" or "Puss in the Corner," we journeyed home-ward on two foot power.

The track meet was the first athletic event. This was held at Litch-field. Ginger, it was cold that day! McCleary, our athlete, who won abanner for our class in the track meet for the All W. H. S., brought homehonors for us from Litchfield.

Another hike was called for one Sunday in October, but only a smallnumber were courageous. Over to Black Rock we hiked, full of pep andfun. Remember the pumpkin pie that McCleary donated. Marchukaitiswas threatened with it several times.

From hikes, we were directed to a class party, October 29, in Commu-nity Hall. As usual we had a large number, both invited and uninvitedguests. A good time for all!

As an innovation, our class won the large banner for selling the great-est number of basketball tickets under the direction of Barton and Rans-low.

The snow and ice didn't interfere with our fun. January 25, a bittercold night welcomed a crowd of would-be skaters on the Oakville pond.

Time passed along and it was getting to be an old story. Anotherclass party, April 22, went off with a bang!

Examinations were drawing nearer and nearer, and we all had hopesof becoming "Famous Juniors."

JUNIOR YEAR

Class Officers

President, Francis Deschene Secretary, Lois Doolittle

Vice-President, J. Marchukaitis Treasurer, A. Roberts

On September 7, a crowd of Jolly Juniors assembled in Room 11, andunder the leadership of our Class Officers, and Miss Fenton, we launchedinto another year of High School life.

0! What a year! The Seniors, thinking that we were ornamenta-tion enough for Room 11, removed our pictures and paintings and placedthem in Room 12, after an uproar of protest, the pictures were replaced.

There was music in the air—a Corn Roast! Why certainly!—Sep-tember 19, at Leatherman's Cave! Most of the Juniors walked over, butMinor, with his famous "Wildfire," rode over, accompanied by a few ofthe fair sex. Corn, frankfurts, pickles and rolls were on the "MenuCard." After a few games, we headed toward home.

As Coue' would say, "Every year, in every way, we are getting bet-ter," so we can say this in track. McCleary won honors in track meet,Litchfield, October 8, while Harriet Eriksson and Mary Eustace broughthome points for the girls.

Time drifted along and we were soon back on a social plane. Theclass party, held November 19 at Community Hall, went off with such abang that we soon after gave a public dance which was a social ratherthan a financial success.

There was a lack of leadership in school-spirit and athletics. Weneeded another leader like Debby Hickcox to wake us up into action.

However, we resolved to hold our own and to enliven our spirit, whenall was shattered by the news of the illness of Mr. Wrig-ht. We shall neverforget his splendid work.

The duties of Principal were given temporarily to Miss Bull. Mrs.Henry Mattoon came to the rescue of our Virgil class until Mr. Ryan re-lieved her of her duties.

The snow was packed, so January 16, a sliding party was held onBuckwheat Hill. Frona's home was the place for refreshments and awarm fire afterwards.

Weeks passed along. Graduation was on hand and it meant to us thatwe had completed three years of high school life.

SENIOR YEAR

President, Dudley Atwood Secretary, Lois Doolittle

Vice-President, John Marchukaitis Treasurer, Anthony Roberts

September 6, 1922, again welcomed the class of 1923. But what achange and surprise! Room 12 was our section room with bright, shinydesks, prophesying a bright future for us. But no!—Miss Fenton was notwith us on this day. The class instantly put in a petition and Miss Fentonbecame our room-teacher for our Senior year.

Everything went along smoothly with the usual amount of pep. Veryearly in the year a class party was held and everyone pronounced it asuccess. The waiters made sure that they had enough ice cream. Howabout it?

Soon, our class rings appeared. How important! Don't you remem-ber the day the Senior girls wore those dazzling "ear rings" and the boyswere dressed like Rudolph Valentino?"

Track was interesting most of the Seniors. At the track meet, heldin. Torrington, McCleary, Marchukaitis, Ranslow, Seymour, Eustace, Da-vis, McGowan, Eriksson and Ransom brought home glory for all.

Winter was now with us. A sleight ride to Thomaston was planned.Everything was in order for a good time, but the wind was high, and theride was called off. All were disappointed, especially Ranslow. Nevermind, Ed., you can take her for a ride in the flivver.

We decided to present a Senior play and though handicapped at firstby the lack of co-operation, "The Private Secretary," proved to be a de-lightful entertainment.

The Year Book was now the topic of interest. We all appreciate thework of Miss Fenton and the Committee in helping to publish the "Me-mento." Brandely deserves praise for his efforts.

Our social activities were at a standstill and before we could hardlyrealize it, Graduation and Class Day were near at hand.

It is interesting to know that this Senior Class, the Class of 1923, isthe largest class of the W. H. S. has ever graduated. Although we mayall scatter in different parts of the world, our high school days will bememories of the happy days we spent in the W. H. S.

HIGH SCHOOL ORCHESTRAEarly in October, M'ss Johnson, our Music Supervisor, called together

all pupils who were interested in orchestra work. Practice was commencedand in a short time, the High School Orchestra was organized and readyfor action.

Next year will be a better and more complete year for the Orchestra,as it is hard to work under difficulties. The following are the membersof the High School Orchestra for 1922-1923: (Piano) Lois Doolittle;(Violins) Mark Carpenter and Edward Bellemore; (Mandcl.ns) FronaBronson and Arlene Hull; (Cornet) Howard Watts; (Drummer) ArthurRussell.

GLEE CLUB

Music! Yes! Come along! Join the Glee Club! As this is the first attempt a t having a Glee Club, the pupils have worked most enthusiasti- cally. Chorus work and individual work have been developed under the able direction of Miss Johnson.

Later in the year, an Operatta, "Princess Chrysanthemum" is to be presented. As there is excellent musical material in the high school, a Glee club can be produced that will be an asset to all.

GIRLS' SENIOR ART, SEWING AND NEEDLECRAFT CLASS

Ninety-three Completed Pieces

This year, under the direction of Mrs. Deeley, the Senior Art Course has been most successful. A variety of articles, beautifully finished, are examples of the careful work of the girls. Blouses, yokes, luncheon sets, dresses, scarfs, aprons, table-runners and covers, beads, boudoir caps and other needlework articles have been made.

The following girls were members of the class: Frona Bronson, Mary Eustace, Lillian Goldstein, Ethlyn Harper, Elsie Johnson, Anne Kuhn, Alice McGowan, Joyce Peck, Hazel Ransom and Gertrude Stephens.

Much credit is due Mrs. Deeley for her work.

BOYS' TRACK

This year, many boys reported for Fall practice and the rivalry waskeen, especially among the younger boys. Deland, our athletic coach, de-veloped a winning team.

On October 29, 1922, both the boys' and girls' track teams entered theLitchfield County Y. M. C. A. Track Meet in Torrington. Other teams en-tering were: Terryville, Thomaston, New Milford, Roxbury, Washingtonand Woodbury. As usual our teams proved to their opponents that theywere still superior, and brought back the much coveted "Track Cup."

The record of the participants is as follows:Class C

BOYS' BASKETBALL

First TeamManager—R. Verpillot Captain—H. McCleary

After a very successful season of track, the boys of the W. H. S.were anxious for the basketball season to begin. The call came, and theboy swere soon in action under the direction of Coach Deland.

The team representing W. H. S. for 1922-1923 was composed of:McCleary, center; Osborn, Anderson, Farrell, forward; Donston and Ver-pillot, guard; with Painter, Miller and Marchuaitis as subs.

Although the team lost its first game with Leavenworth with a score25-27, their spirit did not lessen, but they went forth and finished the sea-son with 100% for the league games and were declared the LitchfieldCounty Champions for 1922-1923. Out of 24 games, 18 were victories and6 defeats.

Beside the league games, the W. H. S. played a remarkably fine gamewith Taft Prep. Taft won by a small margain, 17-15.

Later the team was chosen to play at the Yale tournament. Thiswas indeed an honor, but the team met defeat with Stamford. Again, thelack of a gymnasium and athletic advantages, is the reason for such a de-feat.

The team has made an unusually fine record. McCleary, the captain, and center, proved to be the ''Man of the Hour," and with his clever allaround playing, pulled many a game to victory.

McCleary, center, and Verpillot, guard, were chosen to represent theFirst All-County Team, while Anderson and Osborn, were chosen as for-wards for the Second County Team. By graduation, McCleary, Verpillotand Marchukaitis will be lost, but there are bright hopes for the futureteam.

SECOND TEAM (BOYS)

Due to the large number turning out for basketball this year a secondteam was organized. This was a much better team than was expectedand proved to be a valuable asset in turning out the best basketball teamthe high school ever had as it gave the first team a hard battle at everypractice game. The second team went through the season with only onedefeat which was very good as it played against some of the fastest Juniorteams in the city of Waterbury.

The line-up was as follows: R. F. G. Miller, L. F. J. Collins, R. G. A.Minor, L. G. D. Barton, C. F. Painter. Substitutes, E. Bussemey.

Inter class Basketball

At the beginning of the basketball season, the itnerest in that sportwas so great that it was decided to form a league composed of the fourclasses of the High School. The first team men were barred from theclass teams, but they served as coaches. The teams were evenly matchedand many good games resulted.

We hope that Interclass Basketball will become an established fact inthe High School in the years to come as this year it proved a valuableasset in developing the underclass men for first team material.

The cup, provided by the four class teams, was awarded to the Jun-iors, by virtue of their hard earned victories.

The standing of the games is as follows:Class - Won Lost

GIRLS' BASKETBALL

The girls of the W. H. S. had the best basketball team this year thehigh school has ever had. Early in November the first practice was heldunder the direction of Coach Deland, and it was a banner night, as 30 ormore girls responded to the call.

With such a number to arouse competition, and with the new suits, which were very, very classy, the girls won 16 games, and lost one game.Terryville was the only team that the girls lost a game with, but later thegirls, on the Terryville floor, proved their steel and came home victorious.

The Championship of the Litchfield County fell again to our GirlChampions. Mary Eustace, deserves a great deal of credit for her earnest, loyal playing. Miss Eustace has an exceptional record for a High Schoolplayer, having- made 70 baskets this season, and having the honor of beingfirst in the lead of baskets for all the Litchfield County girl players.

For the First All-County Team, Eustace, as forward, McGowan andDavis as guards, were chosen, while in the Second All-County Team,Ericksson was chosen as center.

It is rather unusual for all the players to belong to one class. Thisyear, the Seniors hold that honor, as all the girls in the First team, in-cluding the substitutes, were Seniors. Still, with this loss in mind, thereis good material left for next year.

BASEBALL

Manager—Arthur Russell Captain—Harold McCleary

Spring is here. Baseball is again welcomed by the W. H. S. athletes. This year, the spirit is ever greater and there are bright hopes for theseason.

The baseball team, through the efforts of the High School pupils inarranging a very successful Tag Day, have new suits and baseball necessi-ties. With at least 18 games on the schedule, this will be a banner year.

The material is exceptionally strong, and with McCleary, Verpillot,Marchukaitis, Osborn, Donstan, Farrel, Anderson, Sanford, Miller, Minor,Allen and Barton, the baseball cup will be ours.

The first game, April 14, was a practice game with the H. & B. SilkCo. In spite of the weather and errors, the boys played well.

Now came the banner game with Naugatuck, April 21. Although theboys thought Naugy would have the superior team, the victory was ours.McCleary, with his home run, with two men on bases, brought home thescore 15 to 5 in our favor. Never mind, Naugy, you can't beat the Water-town crew. Here's to the team!

The schedule is as follows:April 21—Naugy H. S.April 25—Wilby H. S.May 2—Litchfield H. S.May 4—New Milford H. S.May 9—Crosby H. S.May 16—Lewis H. S.May 18—Bethel H. S.May 23—Woodbury H. SENIOR CLASS PLAY

Early in the Fall, there was enthusiasm among the Seniors to presenta play. After much deliberation, "The Private Secretary" was selected, and under the able direction of Miss Marshall and the assistance of MissFenton, the play was presented April 20, at the Community theatre.

This clever three act comedy was a success and much credit is dueall the players. Francis Deschene, who was the private secretary, gave awonderful character delineation, while Louis Brandely, the irascible uncle,Theodore Lund, the tailor, gave remarkably good interpretations of theirparts. Kenneth Sanford, Dudley Atwood, Carleton Seymour, Harold Mc-Cleary and John Marchukaitis were very good in their parts. Honors fell, too, to Joyce Peck, the aunt; to Ruth Potter, the landlady; and to Eliza-beth Thompson and Olive Carter, who were typical subdebs.

We all appreciate the efforts of Louis Brandely, who worked with allhis vim to arrange a successful play. We shall never forget the willing-ness of Kenneth Sanford in assuming a part in the Senior play.

Last, but not least, is Edward Ranslow, who had charge of the tickets. To him, we render thanks, too.

The complete cast of the play is as follows:

A POEM

Mary L. Meissl (W. H. S. 1923)Attention! Seniors of Twenty-Three!For Watertown High we'll give a cheer!Beneath her roof four years we've spent,In the pursuit of learning, ourselves have bent,We've been taught how, when and where Rome did fall,Studied English, Latin, answered the typewriter's ca:l.And now that we're to leave her, never to return,No more within her walls to study and to learn,We look back upon our four years here,With mingled feelings—a smile, a sigh, perhaps a tear. The times we've had, the games we've played,The troubles, worries and joys, have laid,Stone by stone, the foundation of our lives.

IIThrough toil and pleasure, sorrow and joy,We've come to know each other, every girl, every boy.And as the years will onward roll,And each in the world will strive for a different goal,We'll know how strongly the work we've done,Has bound us into a unit, into one. We'll be strengthened by the ideals we've made,The principles, the thoughts and the acts we've weighed. And when trials and disappointments come upon our readAnd seem to crush us with a discouraging, heavy load,The remembrance of our High School lifeWill lead us straight through the world's harsh strife.Dear Watertown High we owe much to you—From the Seniors of Twenty-three—Adieu!

Why the Board of Education doesn't plan a trip to "California" for allthose studying Economics?

Why Pete Lund is not a good advertiser for "Wriggley's ?"

Why so many High School pupils patronize Poli's Friday afternoon?

Who put the grapes in Ed. Ranslow's desk?

If Verpillot, Minor and Roberts will have the leading parts in thedrama "It's Never Too Late To Back Out?"

Why the teachers are so fond of the "Seniors ?"
